Ministry Corner—Consider The Wine Steward Ministry We have about 20 wine stewards serving the four Masses each week-end. We have two at the 4:30 p.m. Saturday Mass, two at 7:30 a.m., four at 9:00 a.m. who rotate, and about 12 serving at the 11:00 a.m. Mass, as they rotate between even and odd months.

Wine stewards bring the cups to the altar as the gifts are being brought to the altar. When the server brings up the wine, the steward fills the

chalice and cups, removes the holder for the gospel book, and places the cups and purificator at the front of the altar. The wine steward then returns the tray to the Credence table. The wine steward stands first in the line of Eucharistic wine ministers. After receiving communion and wine, they go to the Cre-dence table to retrieve a saborium of hosts to refill the hosts, as needed, for the communion servers. When communion is finished, the steward takes the cups and bowls to the kitchen and washes and dries them and returns them to the Credence table for the next Mass.

Many find it a rewarding service to make the Mass flow smoothly. Consider joining this important ministry by calling Barbara at 427-4897. Thank you. -Tom Chvala (CWS) Chief Wine Steward

Bonjour It’s never too early to get your reservations in for this year’s Parish Auction, “Springtime in Paris,” set for Friday, April 24, at Boerner Botanical Gardens. Please plan on joining us at Boerner Botanical Gardens for a night of fun, as you step through the streets of Paris with your fellow parishioners! You can register for the event by going on line at http://aesbid.com/ELP/STALS20 or by sending your regis-tration to the Parish Office.

Raffle tickets will be distributed at all weekend Masses. Don’t forget to pick up your packet! The raffle is important to the success of the Auction and is a great way to participate if you can’t attend the Auction.

We always look to our great family of parishioners for donations for the many raffles and silent auction items. Please consider donating (new items only) tools, technology items, liquor, home items, sporting equipment, fun group classes and parties, adventure events or gifts for the cook. Gift cards (any denomi-nation) and bottles of wine are also a great donation. Donations can be dropped off at the Parish Office or brought to the table in the Gathering Space. If you need a donation pick-up, please call Doris Jome at 414-529-4739, or Sue Ruedinger at 414-731-0537. Thanks for your continued support!

Fish Fry The St. Alphonsus famous fish fry is here! The fish fry is not only a great Friday night dinner, but it’s a great way to meet others from St. Al’s and around the community. Make sure to mark your calendars. Fish fry runs every Friday from 4:30-7:00 p.m., throughout Lent. Check out the St. Alphonsus website for more information. Fish Fry dates are: March 6, March 13, March 20, March 27, April 3 & April 10 (Good Friday)

We can't thank our volunteers enough for supporting fish fry every week. Fish fry really takes our entire church and school communities coming together to be successful (and fun!) for everyone. We encour-age everybody to check out the sign up, and volunteer some time to help out. There is something for all. We'd love your help; fish fry truly is not possible without you. Sign up here to help - https://tinyurl.com/stals-fishfry

Any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us: Mandy Sowa, [email protected], 414-975-4693, or Michelle Waddle, [email protected], 414-517-8684. We look forward to seeing everyone at this year's fish fry!

Important Archdiocesan

Announcement Father Aaron Esch will be leaving St. Alphonsus as Pastor as of June 2020. In the Catholic Church, the pastor is assigned by the local bishop. Prior to that assignment by the bishop, a process occurs which includes prayerful discernment and consultation with the Priest Placement Board. We ask God's blessings for Fr. Aaron and for the commu-nity of St. Alphonsus during this time of tran-sition.

No Gluten Communion

Station To Begin Beginning the first weekend of Lent, we will

begin to offer a no gluten Communion sta-

tion. The station will be located in Section

Five. This is the station over by the choir

area. There will be hosts with wheat and the

no gluten hosts offered at this station. The

no gluten station will be clearly marked with

a square medallion. If you wish to receive

the no gluten hosts you will need to sit in

that area when you come to Mass. The

hosts will be kept in a separate ciborium and

placed in the tabernacle after the last Mass

on Sunday. We will be working with all Sac-

ristans and Eucharistic Ministers on the

logistics of offering the no gluten Eucharist.

We are so happy to make sure that all St.

Alphonsus parishioners and guests are able

to receive at Mass.

Just To Let You Know On Tuesdays during Lent, there will be no 7:00 a.m. morning Mass; instead, there will be a 6:00 p.m. evening Mass on that day. This will enable more people to attend Mass during Lent. The dates are: March 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 and April 7.

If you had previously taken out a Mass inten-tion for the 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, it has been transferred to the 6:00 p.m. Mass.

Saint Alphonsus Parish Will

Be Participating In A Parish-

Wide Survey Saint Alphonsus Parish will be participating in a parish survey, along with the entire Archdiocese of Milwaukee, about discipleship conducted by the Catholic Leadership Institute! Our parish last did a large survey like this in 2000. We need your help.

Please help us by participating in a 10-15 mi-nute survey online. The survey can be accessed at www.disciplemakerindex.com from February 23 thru March 20, and will ask you to reflect on your own spiritual growth and enable you to pro-vide feedback on our parish’s efforts to help you grow. All responses will be confidential, and the parish will only receive information about the com-munity as whole.

We are trying to get the highest response rate possible. This information will be invaluable to our parish and our various ministries, as we plan for the future and strive to be the best disciples we can be. We will receive the results this summer at which time we will share what we have learned with the entire parish.

If you don’t use the computer - there will be opportunities to pick up and complete a paper survey. You can obtain a paper copy at the church entryways. There will be a box labeled “Disciple Maker Index Surveys” to drop completed surveys into. Thank you for helping with this important project!

Don’t cancel life insurance you no longer need! By naming our parish as beneficiary, you’ll provide lasting financial support and possibly qualify for tax benefits as well. Be an angel and pass on your faith to future generations. It costs nothing to change the beneficiary on your policy, and it can be done in less than five minutes, but the gift will last a lifetime!

Winter Markets And Meals The Food, Faith and Farming Network is a faith-based organization that is sponsoring Winter Mar-kets and Meals to help local farmers and producers sell their products and generate income during the winter months. It will be at St. Sebastian Parish, 5400 W. Washington Boulevard, this Sunday, March 1, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Please support this effort.

Immigration Program Barbara Graham, Director of Refugee and Immigration Services for Catholic Charities, and Mark Peters of the Catholic Coalition for Migrants and Refugees will discuss causes of forced migration, the difference between a migrant, refugee and asylum-seeker and what the Catholic position is and how we can respond.

The program will be at Our Lady of Lourdes 3722 S. 58th Street on Monday, March 2, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., in Room C.

Trivia Night Is Back Mark your calendars for the last weekend in March, and call to reserve your tables for another entertaining night of trivia, while raising funds for our Outreach Meal Program! The cost remains $10 per person. As always, there will be door prizes, a 50/50 raffle and automatic correct answers. Compete for the “coveted” trophy, or come just for fun. There are no losers!

A Special Welcome… Last Sunday during the 9:00 a.m. Mass, we formally welcomed Oskar Morales Booker and Fran-cisco Gomez Morales, youth candidates who are participating in the Catechumenate, under the guidance of catechists Kathy and Bob Lange, Sara Dankle, and Sister Eileen. Along with their mother, they worship with us at Sunday Mass. After Mass, their preparation for Baptism, Confir-mation and the Eucharist takes place in the Parish Ministry Center. We offer them our prayerful support, as they continue their faith journey!

School Scene 3K had a great Valentine's Day. They started out with a party. There were 4 different activities.

1. They had to blow a heart into a cup with a straw. 2. They had to group Valentine candies into colors and then count them. 3. They had to create a special Valentine crown. 4. They had to decorate cookies.

After the party, the children gathered to find Valentine hearts scattered through-out the room. The children quickly picked up the different color hearts and sorted them into the correct color container. They put them in rows and predicted which color had the most hearts. They were then asked to make a circle with a heart in front of them. Music was played and the children went around in a circle. The music was stopped and the children were asked to pick up a heart. Each round of the game another heart was taken away. It was a fun variation of musical chairs.

Finally at snack time, the children were able to eat their special cookie creations!

Boy Scouts Popcorn Sales Boy Scout Troop 531 will be selling popcorn and coffee after Masses next weekend, March 7 and 8. The money from this fundraiser will be used to pay for camp, earn merit badges, teach life skills and other activities. Please give them your support.

As disciples, we are about the ministry of discerning with others wheth-er they, too, at this time of their lives are called into discipleship within our faith community. In what ways do we sense ourselves to be a dis-cerning disciple? Are we aware of a time when we had to choose be-tween two good options and how we came to clarity? This Lent, God asks us, “Who do you say that I am?” In light of today, it’s a lot easier to answer a question when you understand what precisely the questioner is asking.

As the story goes, when Jesus comes into Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” None of the disciples re-sponded with an answer that came from the heart. It was Peter that responded with a more functional answer, one that speaks of how Je-sus had affected his life and what it meant to him. What does it mean to know what to believe about Jesus Christ? Let us give our lives to Je-sus, and come into a relationship that will enable us to uncover a func-tional answer as to who Jesus is for us. Who is Jesus to the World? When we are suffering or when someone dies, does that concept of him change? Will we allow him to be Lord, Savior and Messiah?

Most years, I give something up for Lent, like chocolate, which is diffi-cult for me! Lent is really a time to turn to God and depend on Him in all things. This year I am also going to try to add something to my life dur-ing Lent. Add more praying time and reading more of God’s Word. With that it will hopefully allow more reflecting time on the many mira-cles God puts before me every day.

Journey with us this Lenten season. May our faith grow as Jesus in-vites us into a deeper relationship with him. Walk the stations of the Cross each Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. Come to Mass on time and stay with us until it is completely finished and truly be nourished by the

Bread of Life. Become active in a parish ministry. Wouldn’t it be amazing if 50 percent or more of our parish family were to be involved before our new Pastor arrives?

When we partake in the Eucharist and help do the work of the Lord, it is then we become one with the whole Body of Christ. Lent is the perfect time to form new life-giving habits and abandon old bad habits. Do more than just giving something up—do something life-changing to yourself and to the church of God. May the journey of these forty days invite your heart to be at the Holy Week services from Palm Sunday through Easter Sunday.

Finally, I would like to thank Ellen Renick and her family for making a beautiful memorial donation in memory of her father and mother, Hugh Rafferty and Mary Agnes Doyle Rafferty, to the Music Ministry of our parish. All our choir members and instrumentalists, along with myself, will keep them and your family in our prayers and close to our hearts. We have been blessed.

Let us pray for one another and have a blessed and life-changing Lent!

-Terry Piontkowski

Reaching Out Please support the efforts of our Christian Formation stu-dents who are collecting Easter candy, toys, and gift bag tissue paper stuffing to create Easter gift bags for five Catholic schools in the Milwaukee area. We have a goal of filling between 600-800 gift bags to bring Easter joy and hope to K4 thru First Grade students at the following schools: Notre Dame, Nativity Jesuit, St. Antho-ny, St. Josephat, and Guadalupe/St. Patrick.

Please drop off donated items in the little red wagon located by the Confirmation and 1st Communion student banners. Weekend collec-tions will be after all Masses February 29– March 1, and March 7–March 8. Our Christian Formation middle school students will be as-sembling the bags during class on Sunday March 15, and targeted delivery dates are March 24 & 25. Thank you Judy Paz for your assistance, and thank you, St. Alphonsus pa-rishioners, for helping us fulfill our goal and bringing smiles to children this Easter. Any questions, please contact Julie Lobitz at [email protected]. Blessings this Lenten season! - Julie Lobitz

First Sunday Of Lent Life can easily spin us out of control. While there are so many wonderful opportunities before us, we can also get easily distracted and exhausted. There is always something to do, respond to, or check. The clutter of our lives can take us off course, and the best remedy for getting back on track is the experience of the desert. Here we can face our demons square on, resist them, and get back on course. We desperately need the season of Lent. This simple time of year forces us into greater awareness and grounds us in what is good and true. What weighs you down and keeps you trapped? Maybe you are trying to do too much and please too many people. It could be that your fragile self-image is always pushing you to prove yourself and find success. Anxiety and worry, ultimately due to a lack of faith, can quickly tempt you with despair. It could be that you are listening to too many voices and allowing all of the neg-ativity that is present erode the genuine goodness in your heart and in all of God’s creation. Or maybe you struggle too much with fear. Perhaps so much so that you are far too preoccupied with your own agenda and goals and left with little psychological or spiritual room to consider and respond to the plight of your neighbor. Do anger, bitterness, stubbornness, and hatred have homes in your heart? How about greed, gluttony, pride, apathy, or lust? For many, their passions and what can be found on the internet are their downfall, and they are robbed of their inner life and freedom. What is it, specifically, that tempts you away from a childlike trust in God? Define this and use the next few weeks to allow God to chart you a course away from them. Silence, being alone, grace, honesty, struggle, tears, and dryness are all found in the desert. You will also find God and your true self in this holy place. Ready to go? ©LPi

Question Of The Week Theme: Lent is a time to open our hearts more fully to Jesus. Question for Youth: What is one thing you will do during Lent to become more open to God in your life? Question for Adults: As you come to understand the temptation of Jesus in the desert, which one of the devil’s offerings is hardest for you to resist?

“The Shroud of Turin”: Burial Cloth of Jesus Christ? You Decide! with Bill Kelly, Community Room

We invite you for a session on the mysterious “Shroud of Turin.” It is perhaps the most studied object in his-tory. This presentation will review its history, physical description, scientific analysis, the Church’s stand, and the carbon dating results. Since it was first exhibited in 1354 in France, the Shroud has fascinated and per-plexed science. It’s an enigma wrapped in a mystery! Join St. Al’s parishioner, Bill Kelly, for a fascinating presentation.

Bill Kelly is St. Alphonsus’ Office and Technology Manager. No registration; no fee.
