April 19, 2020 Scripture Reflection
The readings today certainly strike a chord to those of us (all of us?) that are going a little stir crazy from the Covid-19 quarantine. The verse that most touches my heart is said frequently by Jesus: “Peace be with you…” The disciples were gathered together in fear in the Upper Room when Jesus came to them with this message – be at peace. He is risen, he is with us, he loves us. We may be trapped in isolation in our homes, and fearful, much like the disciples were, but the message is timeless… we are meant to meet one another in community as a loving family. And we need not be afraid. In Acts, the reading focuses on how the disciples stayed together, shared everything, ate together, prayed together, built a community. They did this in person. No one had Skype or Zoom back then. Don’t we miss the human experience today? I want to be able to meet in person, pray together, hug a friend, see my family without benefit of technology, and many other things. The power of touch is such a remarkable force in our lives, one we often take for granted. There is something miraculous in the tactile encounter among the faithful. And the letter from Peter is significant during this difficult time in World History. He says: “for a little while you may have to suffer through various trials…” It sure would have been helpful if Peter had given a time limit on the phrase “a little while.” So if this pandemic is our trial, we remember our faith and now have the time to pray for one another as never before. Because “although we have not seen him, we love him.” In loving him we are called to love one another. And John’s Gospel is a familiar story. I always felt sorry for Thomas. And I always wondered where he was the first time Jesus appeared. Were they hunkered down from fear? Did he sneak out to get some groceries? The comfort in the story comes near the end: “Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.” That’s us! But I’m relieved that I wasn’t put to the test of doubting Thomas. Questions for reflection: How can doubt and fear of the current life conditions created by the Coronavirus either enhance or sabotage our faith? How can we still do God’s work in these unprecedented circumstances? What does Jesus mean when he says to you: “Peace be with you?” How do you respond? - reflection by Jan Reed, Pastoral Associate/DRE

All Catholics in Ohio are dispensed from the obligation of attending Sunday Mass through May 3, 2020. There is no sin involved from not attending Sunday Mass through May 3, 2020. DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY Divine Mercy Sunday is a fairly new addition to the Catholic liturgical calendar. It is celebrated on the Octave of Easter (Eighth day, or Sunday, after Easter). This is a day set aside to rejoice in the Divine Mercy of Jesus, as revealed to St. Maria Faustina Kowalska. Pope St. John Paul II inserted this feast into our calendar on April 30, 2000 on the day that he canonized Saint Faustina. Christ’s Divine Mercy is the love that he has for mankind, despite our sins. Nineteen centuries after Christ’s death and resurrection, Christ appeared to a Polish nun, Sr. Maria Faustina Kowalska, in a series of visions that took place over almost eight years. Among those visions, Christ revealed the Divine Mercy Novena, which he asked Sister Faustina to pray for nine days (novena) beginning on Good Friday. Chaplet of Divine Mercy: The Lord said to Saint Faustina: “You will recite this chaplet on the beads of the rosary in the following manner: First of all, you will say one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and the Creed. Then on the Our Father beads you will say the following words: Eternal Father, I offer you the body and blood, soul and divinity of your dearly beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world. In conclusion three times you will recite these words: Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.” Our Lord said to Saint Faustina: “Unceasingly recite this chaplet that I have taught you. Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death. The priest will recommend it to sinners as their last hope of salvation. Even the most hardened sinner, if he recites this chaplet even once, will receive grace from my infinite mercy. Oh, what great graces I will grant to souls who will recite this chaplet. Through the chaplet you will obtain anything, if what you ask for is compatible with my will. I want the whole world to know my infinite mercy. I want to give unimaginable graces to those who trust in my mercy.” Jesus asks that each day of the novena be dedicated to prayers for a different grouping of people: Day 1 (Good Friday): All mankind, especially all sinners Day 2 (Holy Saturday): The souls of priests and religious Day 3 (Easter Sunday): All devout and faithful souls Day 4 (Easter Monday): Those who do not believe in God and those who do not yet know me Day 5 (Easter Tuesday): The souls of those who have separated themselves from my church Day 6 (Easter Wednesday): The meek and humble souls and the souls of little children Day 7 (Easter Thursday): The souls who especially venerate and glorify my mercy Day 8 (Easter Friday): The souls who are detained in purgatory

BRINGING THE FAITH HOME With kids out of school and public Masses
and religious education classes temporarily sus-pended, parents may feel cut off or overwhelmed with how to teach and share the beauty and joy of the Catholic faith. To help with this, the staff of The Catholic Telegraph has identified 7 fun resources to help parents and children learn and live their faith at home. Find these at https://bit.ly/CTFaithHome.
All live-streaming Masses will also be

Jesus told St. Faustina that this Feast of Mercy would be a very special day when "all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened". (Diary 699) Our Lord made a great promise to all those souls who would go to Confession and then receive Him in Holy Communion on the Feast
of Mercy, on the Sunday after Easter, which is now called Divine Mercy Sunday throughout the Catholic Church. Jesus promised that “The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain the complete forgiveness of sins and punishment.” (Diary 699) He went on to say "I want to grant a
complete pardon to the souls that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion on the Feast of My Mercy." (Diary 1109)
Jesus said to St. Faustina "I am offering people a vessel with which they are to keep coming for graces to the fountain of mercy. That vessel is this image with the signature: Jesus, I trust in You". (Diary 327) "The two rays denote Blood and Water. The pale ray stands for the Water which makes souls righteous. The red ray stands for the Blood which is the life of souls. These two rays issued forth from the very depths of My tender mercy when My agonized Heart was opened by a lance on the cross. …Happy is the one who will dwell in their shelter, for the just hand of God shall not lay hold of him." (Diary 299)
About the feast day "Divine Mercy Sunday", Jesus said "…tell the whole world about My inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon the souls who approach the Fount of My Mercy. On that day all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet.... Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy". (Diary 699)
