    Weekly Headlines

    Welcome to Issue Number 45

    of the Jerraganda.

This week we lead with a short

    summary of an interesting

article in the June 2015 Issue

of the Rotary on the Move

    Newsletter. While

    Jerrabomberra Rotary is not

    currently experiencing the

    same trend as the broader

    Australian trend we remain a

    strong club with some new

    potential members in the

    wings.

This week we also look back at

    the early beginnings of the

    Jerraganda and can see how

far our journey has taken us to

    Meeting 844 28 May 2015

President Paul invited Anton to read the Charge to Australia and Jan once again was invited to deliver the toast to RI.

Guests for the evening were limited to the ever present Liz who was accompanying Bruce.

Apologies for the evening were received from Alex, Vera, Peter and Sue J, Carolyn, Colin, Cathy, Glenn, Glenda, and Jon.

    Presidents Report

President Paul was sporting a few war wounds (ear and neck plasters) from a recent trip to the doctors, or

else Sandra has been keeping in him line with a bit of old fashioned discipline. Pain killing remedies were

the usual red cordial, as can be seen from the accompanying picture.

Paul reported that the cluster Presidents had recently met with the cluster AG (Lynne) and that Queanbeyan

West Club had advised that the new garbage contractor for the Queanbeyan area had offered an

opportunity for the three Rotary clubs to separate and dispose of any steel on the special waste collection

days, keeping any money raised from the metal sales. The garbage collector will also make a donation to the Rotary clubs on a

regular basis. Members welcomed the offer, but felt that it would require a lot of effort for a small amount of money. As such it

was agreed Jerrabomberra Rotary would not participate and wished the other two clubs well, should they decide to take up the

    challenge.

President Paul also mentioned that the Mayors wife, Nichole, had suggested that the Queanbeyan Rotary clubs join forces in an

annual backyard clean-up project. This suggestion was to be subject to further discussion with the incoming boards of each club,

and was for information only at this time.

President Paul provided an update on the ROMAC baby form the Solomon Islands. The arrival of the baby looks like being Friday 5

June 2015. Vicki is liaising with the ROMAC Chair, Sandra, regarding logistics. President Paul requested members to be available

should they be need from that date.

In closing President Paul informed members that the Board had accepted the resignations of Kerry and Lynne, who were finding

they were too busy to continue their commitment to Rotary at this time and in the foreseeable future. Kerry and Lynne do however

hope to stay in touch with the club and its members and will try to help out on occasions.

    Executive Reports

Secretary Glenn was missing in action with a nil report.

Treasurer Jon was also missing in action.

    Directors Reports

International Director Chilly, was present but had nothing new to report.

Club Service Director Mez was still swanning it in WA.

Youth Director Peter, was an apology due to an encounter with the dentist. Nil to report.

Community Service Director Jan had nothing new to report on the community front.

    A German Moment

Hannah entertained all present with a short talk about the Black Forest, and finished off with a story

about Black Forest Cake, making everyones mouths water as she described the layers of chocolate

cake filled with whipped cream and cherries, plus generous quantities of alcohol. Apparently in

Germany Children are not allowed to eat this cake due to its alcohol content.

Hannah is picture (right) signing a book to be donated to the School Library as part of the clubs

recognition of speakers at Rotary meetings.

    General Business

Uniforms PP Paul distributed the newly ordered polo shirts and jackets to those members who had placed orders. Paul

also displayed a sample rugby style, long sleeved, shirt in the club colours and a number of members indicated they would

like to order one. Paul will send out details by email for members to place their orders.

Music Festival Anton briefed members on the outcome of our catering at this years Canberra International Music

Festival. While we did not lose money, we did not make money either, and under the current arrangements and venue

Anton felt this endeavor was not viable as a fund raiser for future years. Members agreed.

Visioning a question was raised from the floor about the progress with arranging a club visioning session for the club.

As this is with PE Mez, the answer will be provided at a future meeting if and when Mez returns from her adventures in

    WA.

Joker The Joker lucky ticket was drawn in the favour of Lizzy by guest Liz. Guest Liz then offered to do a magic spell on

the cards so that Lizzy could pick the Joker. And guess what it worked, Lizzy drew the Joker. Well done Lizzy. Treasure

Jon will now need to work out the value and make the prize payment to Lizzy. New Joker pack next week.

Fines Sue R stood in as fines master for the night.

Attendance Attendance Officer Lizzy who was still feeling like celebrating her Joker win, decided that even though attendance

was clearly down on the night, the President should still shout Port and Baileys. As such she declared the attendance figure to be

90.1 % and the President duly obliged once again.

Mystery Night The Great Malteser Game

The Mistress of Mystery Glenda was away, so Sue R stepped in to

provide members with a challenging game involving cups straws

and maltesers. Trays of loose maltesers were placed in the centres

of all tables and members were given an empty cup and a straw.

Without touching the matesers members were tasked to transfer

the maltesers one by one into their cups, using the straw to suck up

each malteser for transfer. Music was played and members had the

time period of the song to transfer as many maltesers as they could.

The results were mixed, some members tried and tried and tried and could not manage to suck up a single malteser, so they gave

up and ate them instead. Some members experienced great difficulty but did manage to transfer one or two using their suck up

skills. Some made steady progress and managed to get a reasonable number into their cups. And then

there was the ever competitive Bruce who quickly perfected his suck up style and filled his cup until it

    was overflowing. A clear winner.

First prize for Bruce was, yes you guessed it, a box of maltesers and a coffee

mug with lid for future take away coffees. Bruce also gets bragging rights

as the biggest sucker. The wooden spoon went to Bev, who had one

malteser in her cup, but admitted the transfer was not via the suck up

    method.

Everyone else was a winner as well, as all got to eat their maltesers.

This weeks market report is provided by Sue R

The weather was very cold. Standing on car parking duty was very finger numbing! The chestnut man gave us some hot nuts to warm us up. Liz and I drank lots of hot chocolate. Bruce had his own flask of coffee. Ony a few enquiries re the location of the ATMs. The highlight of the day was when a little

girl came to claim her lost necklace which had luckily been handed in. Her mother had given it to her so it was the start of a family heirloom! We became couriers delivering a cook book to an Ainsley lady who was moving and wouldnt be returning to the markets but wanted a cook book. We considered charging for delivery but didnt. Unfortuntely we couldnt stick around for the farewell drinks for Tam but we sent our best wishes via one of the Hall Rotarians. Adrienne said her big panic as new market manager wouldnt start until next week!

Note to Market Master Anton there are no green shopping bags left at the markets. There is no water either.

    Wheres Hannah?

This week Hannah had her first experience of Yum Cha at a Chinese Restaurant in

Dickson. While there are many different dishes in the Dim Sim varieties and lots of

tasty things to try. You cannot claim to have truly done Yun Cha without trying the

Chickens Feet! Hannah as adventurous as ever, especially when food is involved,

was keen to have a try and liked them so much she had seconds.

Pictured to the right is the dish of Chickens Feet and Hannah getting ready to have

a taste. Chinese food is delicious, but Hannah will need to work on her chop stick

skills to avoid going hungry if there are no forks available.

The Jerrabomberra Rotary weekly Newsletter has been a regular club publication of

humble beginnings. Initially the Newsletter started out as a 4 page A5 summary of the

weekly meeting. Over the years the Newsletter has steadily transformed to what it is

today; a colour A4 publication distributed electronically as a PDF document and

containing feature articles in addition to a short summary of the weekly meetings. The

Newsletter is also available via the club website and Facebook.

The earliest issues, in September and October did not have a name (se picture above left), but show that the Provisional Rotary Club of

Jerrabomberra was on its feet and active. During October a competition was run for the Newsletter name and the Jerraganda was born (pictured

above right) (Also see Our History on the last page). The colour of the paper for the Newsletter was a bright yellow/gold similar to the colour of

    the Rotary Wheel.

In the early years the Newsletter was printed in hard copy and distributed at the following weekly meeting.

    OUR HISTORY

In 1998 the Rotary Clubs of Queanbeyan and Queanbeyan West Rotary decided to sponsor a new Rotary Club based in Jerrabomberra. Bill Lilley, John Snedden and Peter Jarvis from Queanbeyan West took on the joint roll of mentoring the development of the new club. (Peter Jarvis went on to become our Charter President).

Advertising for potential members began in March 1998. After a successful campaign, the Club was chartered on 18 November 1998 with 26 members.

Initial meetings were held at the Jerrabomberra General Storethe venue was very good until we grew in numbers. We then moved to the Jerrabomberra Community Centre for a few years, and we now meet at the Jerrabomberra Public School Staff Room, on Thursdays (6.15 for 6.30 pm).

(Charter) President Peter Jarvis ran competitions to select a name for our Club Newsletter and a design for the Club banner. There were some good and some not so good suggestions. Pam Spencer suggested the winning bulletin name Jerraganda and David Stevens was the successful designer of our club banner. The design incorporated a goose and the windmill associated with the original entrance to the estate adjacent to the Community Centre. Both the Jerraganda and the Club logo have evolved to keep pace with modern times.

We have always been, and continue to be, a vibrant and fun loving club providing valued community service, both locally and internationally. Our motto is,
