30th Sunday of the YRB

1st Reading (JER 31:7-9) The prophet foretells the return of God’s people from exile in Babylon. Even the most helpless will share in the joy of this great event.

2nd Reading (HEB 5:1-6) This reading sets out the things that are required of a priest and shows how Christ met these perfectly.

In the Gospel (MK 10: 46-52) Jesus hears the cry of a blind man Bartimaeus and gives him back his sight.

Theme: What do you want me to do for you? (MK10:36)

The 1st time Jesus asks this question was in response to James’ and John’s request to sit at his right and left. It was a request born in misunderstanding. Today, Jesus asks the same question of a blind man. The blindman said, “Rabbani; Master, let me see again” (MK 10:51).

Dear friends in the Lord, gathering in the house of God and standing before Him and our Lord Jesus. Imagine Jesus is standing before you and asking you, “What do you want me to do for you?”. What would you answer? What changes would this granted wish make in your life? Would this favor make you a better disciple of Jesus?

In today’s Gospel, Bartimaeus stands before Jesus. Jesus asks, “what do you want me to do for you?” As a beggar, Bartimaeus might ask for wealth. But Bartimaeus is also blind. He wants sight more than wealth. However, more important than that Bartimaeus wanted it. By looking at the steps of faith Bartimaeus took in the story, we can see a model for our lives when we are in need.

Bartimaeus came to Jesus despite obstacles. He was a blind beggar on the side of the road. Jesus was in the midst of the crowd. Desperately Bartimaeus cried out to Jesus even though he was told to be silent. What keeps us from approaching Jesus? Maybe we fear what He will ask of us. We may worry about the pressures of society, the chance of being ridiculed, economic risks. Perhaps we are too busy, uninter-ested.

When was the last time we cried out to Jesus, spoke of him in conversation, prayed in public, made our faith public? Bartimaeus approached Jesus in faith not fear. As an obvious sign of his faith, he threw aside his cloak in the midst of the crowd. He desperately needed his cloak as a blanket at night and clothing or protection from the sun during the day. If Bartimaeus remained blind, he could not have found it again. He trusted that Jesus would heal him. Abandoning the cloak was a sign of his faith.

Dear friends, how do we demonstrate our faith in Jesus? What risks are we willing to take in faith? It would be nothing to jump up when we can see obstacles, since we know our legs will sustain us. Perhaps we are asked to risk by obeying when it offends our pride. Perhaps we are asked to turn down a questionable business deal rather than compromise principles. Perhaps we risk a good grade because we refuse to join in cheating.

When we ask for healing, what must we let go of to show our faith? We say we trust, but we continue to worry. Perhaps a physical healing would force us to be less dependent and more alone. Barti-maeus knew what he wanted and why he wanted it. He wanted to see so he could follow Jesus up the road - which is another way of saying that he became a disciple. Bartimaeus lacked physical sight, but he had tremendous insight.

Like Bartimaeus we are all blind in some way or another. We need healing of our blindness: blindness to prejudice, to injustice, to gossip, to greed, to rash judgment. We may be blind to our own gifts, our vocations, our talents, our inheritance as a child of God. We may even be blind to the intense love God has for us. We all need to see.

If our request is answered, will it help us to be a better disciple? What would we do if we re-gained health, or wealth or freedom from a problem? How would a spouse or children of new job lead us closer to God? Our question to ourselves needs to be: What is my goal? What has to happen so that the goal is possible? When we know the answers to these questions, we can answer Jesus when he asks, “What do you want me to do for you?”

Remember Bartimaeus answered, “That I may see”. Immediately, he was healed. He gets what he asks for. He receives his sight and even gets more. He became a changed person. His name changed from Bartimaeus to Bar-Elohim; from son of Timaeus to the son of the Lord. And those who are begotten by God are not blind. May the Lord help us to see. Amen.
