We are already fully immersed in the 2018 academic year with the cycle test programme due to commence on Tuesday next week. This weekend sees our first full sporting fixture on the cricket fields, water polo pool and basketball courts, whilst the rowers participate in the VLC regatta. The sprint athletes compete in the Puma School of Speed meeting on Monday evening. A special welcome to all new Grade 8 parents and learners to our school as they receive this newsletter for the first time. The Grade 8 boys have had a busy introduction to life at Jeppe having participated on their camp, the Induction evening and with many of them having already represented Jeppe on the sporting front - they should by now be fully acclimatised into life at Jeppe. I would also like to convey my congratulations to boys who performed extremely well over the December holiday period in their various sporting pursuits. Kgaudise Molefe became the first Jeppe boy since Mark Johnston in 1989 to be selected for the SA Schools cricket team whilst our four U16 water polo representatives won gold in their provincial tournament with the U15 and U19 boys winning silver. We congratulate Mr van der Ryst who left Jeppe at the end of the year to take up the post of headmaster at Queens College in Queenstown. We wish him well in this new chapter in his career. Following his departure, Mr Gittins has been appointed as Director of Sport and Mr Pitman as Senior Housemaster of Oribi house. We wish Mr Gittins and Mr Pitman, both of whom are old boys of the school, the best of luck in their new portfolios. The focus this year will be on improving our academic performance and academic culture across all levels and all grades and it was thus heartening to see virtually every matric pupil and parent at our Parent's Evening last night. Improving the academic performance of our boys and raising the expectations of the entire Jeppe community - learners, parents, educators and Old Boys - regarding academics is neither a short term nor an easy task. However, it is one which I personally am committed to and 2018 will already see some changes in our processes and methodology in this regard. More to follow in future newsletters on this topic. Although we still await confirmation from the Gauteng Department of Education regarding the formal appointment of the headmaster, I would nevertheless like to thank all members of the Jeppe community for warmly welcoming, and supporting me, in my acting headmaster role thus far this year and I will, in this capacity, be communicating my vision for the school at SGB arranged parent meetings and in future newsletters. I look forward to a wonderful, exciting, challenging and enjoyable year ahead. Dale Jackson ACTING HEADMASTER

BLAZER SHORTAGE The uniform shop has informed us that their stock of Jeppe blazers has arrived and is available for purchase. INTRODUCTION TO NEW STAFF MEMBERS We are delighted to welcome the following new staff members to Jeppe and trust that their time here will be one of growth and fulfilment. MR CASEY ARNOLD Mr Casey Arnold is a Jeppe Old Boy who is thrilled to be back at the school. He has a BBA degree and an IMM Diploma and will be teaching Business Studies. He comes to us from Benoni High School where he has taught for the last two years. He is impressed with the changes that have been made at the schools since he left. “The school is looking beautiful and the buildings and facilities have improved immensely over the last few years,” he said. “It is a great environment for teaching and learning.” As far as his plans for the year ahead are concerned, he is just happy to be back “home.” “I want to enjoy my first year back at the school and try and make a positive impact on the boys,” he said.

MRS SAYURI CHETTY Mrs Chetty has joined our Life Sciences Department from Pinetown Boys’ High School. She has a B.Ed. Degree and Honours in Science Education (both Cum Laude). “My first week at Jeppe has been amazing,” she said. “The learners, in particular, are enthusiastic and passionate about their school. “I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to teach in a school that is run so efficiently, and where there is such a positive atmosphere. Mrs Chetty’s goal for the year ahead is to achieve 100% pass rate in all of her classes. “My aim is also to develop a style of teaching that is more suitable for the new generation of learners,” she said.

MR TYRON HORNE Mr Tyron Horne comes to us from St David’s Marist and is currently studying a Bachelor Degree in Education through Unisa. He has joined the Afrikaans department. “I am a King Edward Old Boy and, so far, Jeppe has silenced me and corrected my previous perceptions. The school is definitely on the way to the top. The young men, the teaching staff, and everyone in between are part of a strong brotherhood,” he says. As an Afrikaans teacher, his goal is to see his students achieve their best. “I would also like to create more awareness and increase the numbers involved in swimming. Being a happy teacher is also one of my targets, after all who wants to deal with a grumpy teacher.”

MR ANELA MAJOZI Anela Majozi has a B.Com degree in Marketing Management from the University of the Witwatersrand and is busy doing a PGCE in Mathematics. He comes to the school after completing an internship at St David’s Marist Inanda and is teaching Mathematics. He has found the school to be fantastic so far. “The incredible facilities and grounds coupled with an amazing staff who have been extremely welcoming has certainly eased my transition into the school. There's a great sense of cohesion and clarity of the Jeppe culture evident among the boys and staff.” He wants to continue learning and growing and believes this is the right environment to do so.

“I hope to make a positive impact on all the boys that I teach, coach and mentor at Tsessebe House.”

MR NICHOLAS McCANN Nicholas McCann, another Jeppe Old Boy, taught at St John’s Preparatory School last year and has joined the Jeppe Business Studies department. He has found the staff here very helpful and friendly, and the boys well-mannered and respectful. “The buildings are really impressive and there is a big improvement in the physical infrastructure in the years since I was last here,” he said. Speaking of his plans for the year head, he said his goal is to develop good relationships with the classes that he teaches. “I would like the boys to leave my class with a sense of achievement and purpose and a better understanding of the subject. “I would like them to develop into better men.”

MR CHRIS VAN DER MERWE Mr Van der Merwe comes to Jeppe from Hoërskool Drie Riviere and will be teaching Technology. He has a Bachelor of Education in Senior and Further Education and Training. He is very impressed with the discipline, tradition and the general sense of belonging that exists at Jeppe. “The historical buildings, the good manners of the boys and the respect from the staff and the boys make me feel like I don’t have to do anything more but to earn their respect,” he said. “My ambition is to guide my learners to be the best and in turn, I want to grow to be the best for them. “I want them to work hard and to understand that it is OK to be second sometimes.”

GRADE 8 CAMP AND INDUCTION On Friday, 12 January 2018 at 05:45, the Jeppe prefects met at the school to prepare for their first encounter with the incoming Grade 8 learners for 2018. At 06:30, nervous parents started arriving and attended to the final formalities before their sons, the prefects and three members of staff left for Maraneman on the Vaal, the venue for the weekend camp and team building. Only once the buses were out of sight, did the parents leave for home. Everyone was welcomed at 09:30 on arrival in rather sweltering “Vaal heat” and the camp was officially under way. The learners were divided into 8 groups, each with a tour guide and three prefects. The boys would complete their challenges in these groups and therefore spend most of the time together. The first activity the boys were tasked with was to come up with a captivating war cry. Each group had to come up with a name that included a sky, sea and land animal and the war cry had to encompass all these aspects as well as the colour and emblem of the group. The winning group’s name was “Hippocrocodilyduck” and they explained themselves to be as adaptive as a hippo, as ferocious as a crocodile and as loud and “in your face” as a duck. The weekend unfolded in this manner, where the boys were challenged to be creative and original. The boys took part in over 16 activities during the camp and the winner of each activity won “moola”, which became relevant at the end of the camp. Over and above the set activities, the boys were coached in the traditions, expected manners and behaviour of what is essentially a “Jeppe Boy”. The first day was rather tough for these young men, however the prefects confirmed that by the second day, they were really getting the hang of it. Favourite activities included – Crazy Bucket, where boys had to move a bucket of water filled with water down a row using only their feet while lying on their backs. The action-packed obstacle course which was filled with exhilarating obstacles such as a 15 foot high slide, a 10 metre long spider net, a warped wall climb and leopard crawl through the muddiest Vaal water available. 3-way Nukem, which the boys always found time to play – as did the staff members while the prefects led the learners in an amazing display of the school war cries.

The camp was followed up on the 1st three days of school with an induction programme where they were shown all aspects of the school, learnt where everything was on the school campus and pretty much learnt everything “Jeppe”. Their induction programme culminated on Friday 19 January, in one of the highlights of the year, a ceremony where the boys were presented with their blazers and welcomed into their houses and the school community. The evening ends with the school war cries (that the boys had now been practising for a week), in front of the main building of the school. It is a most special occasion where both the parents and boys are officially and with great emotion accepted into the true brotherhood of the Jeppe Family.

ACHIEVEMENTS Rowing Well done to the U16 Eight who won Gold at the St Albans Senior Regatta on Saturday 20 January 2018. An exceptional achievement in a highly competitive event. CELL PHONE LOCKERS This is a reminder that there are still cell phone lockers available for rent. The lockers are available for a once off deposit of R250 per locker. When the learner leaves Jeppe, or no longer wishes to rent the locker, the deposit will be returned in full, provided the key is also returned. A charge of R50.00 will be levied to have a lost key replaced. Lockers are required to be emptied each evening and responsibility will not be taken for any valuables left overnight or during holiday periods. We urge parents to make use of this facility in order to safeguard personal items and anyone wishing to rent a locker is to please contact Gail Murton in the Finance Office at [email protected] as soon as possible. TRAFFIC IN GOOD HOPE STREET The school is once again receiving many calls and communications from members of the public as well as parents from the school itself, with regard to the bad, inconsiderate and in some cases, downright rude behaviour of certain of our other parents when travelling and dropping off and fetching their sons in Good Hope Street. We strongly appeal to all parents to strictly obey the lawful rules of the road, and to at all times behave in a courteous and respectful manner to other members of the community and school body. Please do not stop/park where orange cones have been placed in the road as this endangers the other road users and more importantly the boys of the school. These cones are strategically placed in order to ensure the maximum safety of all our learners. The co-operation of all concerned will be greatly appreciated. UPCOMING EVENTS
