Fault vs Responsibility Take ownership of your successes and failures, in the classroom as well as on the sports field. Accept responsibility for yourself- which starts with you showing up and being present. It may not always be your fault when you are underachieving, but it is always your responsibility to fix it. No-one is going to do it for you. 2. Look after yourself Being physically fit and healthy is an essential component of success. Become involved in the extra-curricular programme of the school. It provides a much-needed distraction from the academic rigours placed on you by the school. Eat well and get enough sleep. 3. You’re not alone Tap into the many resources at your disposal – the staff, interns, hostel masters and your peers. They are there to assist you throughout the year. If you have a question, ask. If something is bothering you, tell someone. The staff will do whatever they can to help you, but cannot do so if they don’t know about it. 4. Manage your time This is the big one. The school recognises how much pressure you are under – that is why the school day was re-organised. Time has been given back to you during the official school day to do your homework, work on assignments and study. It’s up to you to use this time effectively. 5. Learn from your mistakes Tests and exams are not there to ascertain what you already know. The real value of testing is in finding out where the gaps are. See every test and exam as an opportunity to reflect on where you have gone wrong and to make a commitment to not making the same mistakes again. 6. A Parent’s job is to provide support Make sure that the environment you provide for your son is suited to success. You should always encourage and not be too critical. You can demand high standards, however not react harshly if your son falls short of them. Understanding and reasoning are far better methods of resolution than conflict. Always remember that they are walking this road, not you. You can guide them and smooth out the obstacles, where possible, but you can’t walk the road for them. ABSENTEEISM We are appealing to parents to assist with and support the school in ensuring that their sons do not take undue time off school and that boys are only absent where it is unavoidable. Learners who miss significant and important academic learning time are disadvantaged when it comes to assessments, tests and exams and even where extra lessons are offered, the benefit is not the same as being in attendance at the full classroom experience. This is particularly relevant in the higher grades. It is also important to remember that any learner who is absent from school on a Friday (this includes learners who leave before 11:30) will not be eligible to participate in any sporting fixtures on the following Saturday or Sunday. ACADEMIC PRIZE-GIVING – 2016 TOP ACHIEVERS The formal academic prize-giving for the top achievers of 2016 was held in the Memorial Hall on Tuesday 31 January 2017 with past educator, Mr Eugene Stolk, as the guest speaker and entertainment once again proficiently supplied by the Jeppe Pipe Band.

Catching up with old friends and colleagues Mr Motlogeloa, Mrs Stolk, Mr Stolk, Mr Faltermeier

The top achievers in each Grade were as follows: Grade 8 Grade 9 Grade 10 Grade 11

Ashirvaan Sookoo Liam Stott Jonathan Bosch Preston van Tonder

EDUCATOR AWARD – STEPH CRAIG Congratulations to our Information Technology (IT) educator, Ms Steph Craig, on receiving the award for the top IT results in the district for the Matric group of 2016. The school are most proud of Ms Craig and her most well-deserved achievement. NEW EDUCATOR PROFILES As mentioned in the last newsletter, Jeppe High School for Boys is very proud to welcome new educators to our family. Below are brief introductions of each new member of staff. Mr Thabang Petlele – Geography Qualifications: BSc Wits. PGCE This is Mr Petlele’s 1st teaching post although he has been involved at the school as a sports coach in the past. “Jeppe is an amazing place,” he says. “I can coach sport, which I love doing, I can grow as a person, and I have an excellent mentor.” His ambition for the year is to have a 100% pass rate in his matric class, and even a few distinctions. “I’m also hoping to coach an A soccer team this year and I would love them to have a successful season.”

Mr Fourie van Niekerk - Head of Department Afrikaans Qualifications: National Professional Diploma in Education and Advanced Certificate in Education for Learner Support.

Mr van Niekerk comes to Jeppe from Welkom High School where he was the HOD for Afrikaans. “Jeppe is the first school I have taught where you don’t have to fit into a little box,” he says. “You can be who you are. The management is extremely helpful. The boys are well behaved and courteous. So far I am very happy I made the move. “I want to show the boys that Afrikaans is not as difficult as they think it is. I want to give them a space where they can learn and grow as individuals.”

Mr Mathew Schneider - Business Studies. MIC Water Polo Qualifications: BCom Sports Management, PGCE FET phase Mr Schneider previously taught at St David’s Marist Inanda College. He is very positive about what he has experienced at Jeppe High School for Boys so far. “I am enjoying the boys and the culture at Jeppe. I find they are hardworking sportsmen, dedicated to the school. “In the year ahead I want to solidify my position at the school and gain the respect of the boys. I would also like to continue growing the Water Polo club’s stature within Gauteng.” Mrs Bronwen Kemp - English Academic qualifications: BA (Hons) in Performing and Visual Art, BA (Hons) in English Literature, PGCE.

She has come to us from Edenvale High School. “I have felt extremely welcomed and appreciated as a new member of the Jeppe staff,” she says. “It’s been an adjustment teaching only boys, but I am really enjoying it. “The buildings and facilities are excellent. It’s almost as if you can feel the history as you walk around the campus. I feel more like myself than I have in ages thanks to Jeppe! “My ambition for this year is definitely to make progress on my MA. I am also in the throes of working towards writing my first novel - a long term long-term goal.”

Mrs Alison Jones - Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy Academic qualifications: HDE (Edgewood) Ms Jones came to us from Reddam House, Waterfall Estate. She says she is very impressed with the school so far. “The staff are very friendly and welcoming. The boys are polite and well-behaved. The pride they take in their school is amazing. “I would like to see more of the boys embracing the idea of Maths Lit as a “real” subject. I would like them to take it seriously and put more work into it in order to achieve better results. “A lot of them think it is an easy subject which requires little work. Although it is easier than Maths, they still need to work hard in order to achieve a high mark.” Mr Carl Spilhaus – History. 1st team rugby coach Qualifications: Diploma in Education (Paarl Teachers Training College), Batchelor of Arts (Stellenbosch University).

Mr Spilhaus came to Jeppe from King Edward VII School, having coached the first rugby team there for the past 10 years. He has found it easy to adapt to life at Jeppe. It’s a boys’ school, with everything good that goes with that. I have found the boys to be very humble. His ambition over the years to come is to help the boys to reach their full potential.

Mrs Bronwyn Ogle – English Academic Qualification - BA Degree in English and Psychology. Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (UNISA) Mrs Ogle taught at Parktown High School for Girls and Sacred Heart College. She says she is thoroughly impressed with the level of discipline at the school, and with the manners of the boys. “The school seems incredibly organised and well-run,” she says. “I’m impressed with the many extra-curricular options open to the boys and I think the new timetable is a wonderful initiative to support the boys who have very busy afternoon schedules and would not otherwise be able to attend. “I look forward to getting involved in many different aspects of the school. One of the best ways to get to know the boys is to see them outside of the classroom. This term I am involved in coaching Public Speaking and managing the Cross Country team.”

Mr Gabriel Janse van Rensburg – Mathematics Academic qualifications: BA Honours in Psychology, (currently completing PGCE through UNISA).

This is Mr Janse van Rensburg’s first teaching post. He believes Jeppe is living up to its reputation as one of the best schools in the country. “The grounds are beautiful, the facilities are first class, the staff are phenomenal and the students keen. It makes teaching an absolute pleasure. “My goals for the year are to re-establish the Jeppe choir and inspire the boys to strive for excellence in every aspect of their lives.”

Mr Brett Riskowitz – Head of Department Life Orientation Academic Qualifications: BA Hons in Media Studies (Wits), PGCE (UNISA) Mr Riskowitz came to Jeppe from Edenvale High School but has a long standing association with Jeppe High School for Boys as his father and uncles were Old Boys. He finds Jeppe incredible. “I feel like I am treated like a professional and there is so much incentive to give my best,” he says. “The boys are great and the staff are awesome and friendly. “My aim is to mould Life Orientation into a recognised and important subject in the school; to make Life Orientation a spoken-about subject in our school”. Ms Kate Hutchings – English Academic qualifications - BA Hons in English UJ, H.Dip.Ed.(PG) Wits.

Miss Hutchings has taught at Mondeor High School for the past six years. She spent two years at Jeppe in 1993 and 1994. She believes Jeppe is maintaining a fine tradition. There are many new buildings and the boys are friendly and courteous. “I want every student to enjoy English and achieve the best possible marks for themselves. I am hoping for happiness and success at Jeppe.”

Mr Taso Tofas – Maths Academic qualifications: BSc Hons. Fellow of the Actuarial Society of South Africa Mr Tofas brings a lot of private sector experience to the school. He has been an actuary for 8 years, most recently at Momentum. As a Jeppe old boy, he says he is delighted to see that the respect, team spirit and “togetherness” of the boys is as good as ever. “Maths is a subject some people don’t like,” he says. “My aim is not only to improve maths skills, but also to show the skills that maths can teach you, and how they are used in the working world. “I also aim to inspire a general love of learning and reading among the boys.” Mr Devin Cripwell – Biology. Head of Rowing Academic qualifications: MSc (Exercise Science) Rhodes University. PGCE UNISA.

Mr Cripwell comes to us from Rondebosch Boys’ High School. He finds Jeppe a fantastic school with a lot of potential. “There is a lot of tradition which is so important in a boys school,” he says. “I hope to contribute positively to the academic environment at the school. On the sporting side, my biggest goal is to rebuild Jeppe Rowing to the heights of previous years. As the oldest school rowing club in the country, it deserves its place at the top.”

Mr Dominic Shaw - Physical Education. Head of Strength and Conditioning. Qualifications: BSc (Hons) Sports Science and Rugby Before coming to Jeppe, Mr Shaw worked for Perform Better in the UK, and for Catapult Sports. He says he is very impressed with what he has found at Jeppe. “The staff is great and I love the passion that I have found in the boys. The sporting and exercise facilities are great,” he says. He says he is hoping to create a system where exercise and conditioning become a way of life. “I want to impart my knowledge to students and staff and develop an environment where our students are independent learners.”

BRANDEN WILLOWS – SWIMMING FOR CANCER Branden Willows in Grade 10D will be swimming for charity in the 8 mile at Midmar this year. This means he will be swimming every event at the Midmar Mile taking place on the 11th and 12th February 2017. Branden said, “I am a 15 year old Jeppe Boy and I am very excited to be swimming the 8 mile for the first time to raise money for CHOC. I love swimming and helping others, so what better way to raise money than by combining both my passions. I am at my happiest in the water. I have wanted to swim this ever since I started swimming Midmar. Cancer affects so many lives and the number of children being diagnosed with cancer or terminal diseases is increasing. Please help me to reach my goal so that CHOC can continue to do the wonderful work they do, not only helping children with cancer, but supporting their families as well.”

Branden’s goal is R10 000.00 To date he has raised R8 550.00

Currie Cup Water Polo This long standing provincial water polo tournament, with the original trophy having been donated by Sir Donald Currie in 1900, introduced an U18 section (girls and boys) some six years ago. There are two U18 boys teams and Jeppe are proud to announce that six of our boys have been selected to represent Central Gauteng at this tournament taking place in Stellenbosch from 17 – 21 March 2017. A Team – Luke Allan and Luca Biffi B Team – Cameron v/d Walt, Liam Stott, Sebastijan Stojanovic and Zane Nwaekwu. Well done to the gentlemen. There have also been outstanding achievements in our weekly fixtures, with some of the noteworthy performances being: - U14A cricket team beat Affies by 3 wickets after bowling them out for just 79 runs. U14A water polo team came second at their very first tournament - the Crawford Lonehill Inland Water Polo Tournament. The 1st four rowers were the winners of the Men’s A Four race, with a winning time that broke the course record by 12 seconds, at the VLC National Sprint Champs at Germiston Lake.

Stephen Selepe, Karl-Heinz Kaminski, Nicolas Steensma, Nizaam McBride, Malick Burger

A superb individual performance by Chad Markgraaf in the U15B cricket team vs Affies, who took 4/16 (including a hat-trick and 4 wickets in 5 balls) and top scored with 18 runs in Jeppe’s innings.

Parents are requested to be courteous in the traffic, particularly in the mornings and afternoons when dropping off and fetching their sons. Please do not park in driveways, along yellow lines, coned-off areas or right at the main gate where staff are trying to get in and out of the school. Inconsiderate behaviour results in congestion, aggravation and unnecessary stress for all concerned. Please also remember that the Macdonald Street gate is now also open from 07:00 to 07:30 in the mornings with a security guard on duty. Using this gate will alleviate congestion in Good Hope Street.

Portuguese lessons commenced on Monday 30 January 2017 and will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 14:30 to 15:30 in Room 17. Classes for all ability levels can be accommodated.

To all Grade 12 learners – in order to be registered to write the NSC examinations in November, all matric learners must please supply two certified copies of their ID documents to Mrs Rattray before 10 February 2017.
