ike any growing seven-year-old, the Garden School Foundation, a community coalition inspired by Alice Waters’s Edible Schoolyard project, needed attention. Found-ed and supported by L.A. lumi-naries such as Mozza chef Nancy

Silverton and landscape designer Nancy Goslee Power, the program had yet to raise funds for a kitchen classroom.

Enter Nathan Turner. The interior designer had been introduced to the organization by Goslee Pow-er and quickly put an event in motion by selecting friends Jenni Kayne-Ehrlich, the L.A. fashion de-signer, and actress/model Amber Valletta to help throw a family-friendly backyard fundraiser. “They are both moms and committed to healthful living, so they were natural picks,” says Turner of his co-hosts. And so, the letterpress invites were sent, centerpieces were set, and on a sunny Saturday in Beverly Hills, some 200 guests gathered to celebrate the L.A.-based non-profit, which works hands-on with the Los Angeles Unified School District to teach children about the sources of the food they eat—whether by planting, harvesting or cooking.

With its organic garden, abundant light and raw wood accents, Kayne-Ehrlich’s home provided the ideal backdrop for the daytime affair. Adults sipped chilled Pinot Grigio while their tots played at an arts-and-crafts table loaded with a rainbow of pipe cleaners, pom-poms and feath-ers. Root vegetables cascaded from tiered galva-nized tins placed on burlap-covered tables, while vintage quilts scattered throughout the yard made the picnic comfortable for a cool crowd that included Kirsty Hume, Ione Skye, Rachel Zoe, Lydia Hearst, Amanda Anka and Jason Bateman.

Inside, Silverton’s classic dishes from Mozza-2Go beckoned from giant platters: eggplant capona-ta, marinated olives, chopped salad, and, of course, plenty of margherita and fennel-sausage pizza.

Before the butterscotch budino was gone, Turner knew the event had been a success. The Garden School kitchen classroom would become a reality. gardenschoolfoundation.org.•
