PANTHER PRESS DECEMBER 2020 Jennifer Culbertson Principal During the month of December, Providencia is focusing on the character trait of compassion. Compassion is a genuine sympathy for hardship or suffering other people are experiencing, and a desire to ease that pain. There are many different ways to show compassion for others, but the important thing to remember is that it comes from your heart. Practice showing compassion by first ignoring differences and finding commonalities, which will help you relate to what someone else is going through. Whether you're interacting with a friend, colleague, peer, or family member, here are some tips on how to show compassion. 1. Start with Yourself: The best way to learn how to be compassionate toward others is to be compassionate with yourself. To start, you can praise yourself for your successes (even with small things like making your bed in the morning) and forgive yourself for your mistakes. You can also focus on your strengths and positive qualities rather than dwell on your weaknesses. 2. Communicate Verbally and Nonverbally: We often focus on what to say when we think about how to communicate with others. But communication goes way beyond our words. One of the best ways of showing compassion is to use nonverbal cues to communicate that you care. Make eye contact, keep your body turned toward the person speaking, and listen quietly. 3. Encourage Others: Sometimes all it takes is a little encouragement to show someone what they’re capable of. If someone you know is feeling down, one of the best ways of showing compassion is by offering encouraging words. When we praise and encourage others, we can sometimes kick-start a positive spiral of behavior in that person. 4. Show Kindness: Whether you’re wondering how to show compassion at school or at home, one of the best things you can do is to show kindness. So go ahead: give your kindness away without expecting anything back. Kindness is contagious, and your kindness can spread in ways you’d never expect. 5. Volunteer: One of the best ways to cultivate compassion is through volunteer service. Volunteering connects you to others, giving you the opportunity to make new friends and increase your social skills. Spending time helping people is good for your body, mind, and soul. 6. Consider Your Words: When you’re looking for ways to show compassion, always remember to think before you speak. It’s easy to start rambling and say things you might regret. But at its heart, compassion is about paying attention to the present moment with a loving attitude. Compassion is defined by your actions. The simple act of showing compassion can make a world of difference in someone’s day (and in yours!). Let’s work together, Panthers, to practice and model compassion at home, at school, and in our community. On behalf of the entire Providencia staff, I would like to wish you a happy and healthy holiday season. We are so blessed to have a strong school community that comes together during good times and challenging times. Thank you for your continued support and positivity. It’s GREAT to be a PANTHER! With gratitude, Jen Culbertson

PANTHER PRESS DECEMBER 2020

Jennifer Culbertson Principal

During the month of December, Providencia is focusing on the character trait of compassion.

A Note from the School Nurse by Peggy Kurihara RN

We are well into the Fall season which means that the flu season is upon us. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that getting the flu vaccine is more important than ever during 2020-2021 to protect yourself and the people around you from the flu, and to help reduce the strain on the health care systems responding to the Covid-19 crisis.

Places to go for a flu vaccine are:

1. Your Primary Care Health Provider,2. CVS, Vons or Walgreens Pharmacies - fees apply. Some accept medical insurance,3. All Inclusive Community Health Center - fees apply. 1311 N. San Fernando BLVD, Burbank. 818-843-9900. Most

insurances are accepted,4. Mend Clinic - 1701 W. Verdugo Blvd, Burbank. 818-843-8555. The vaccines costs $35.00

As a reminder:

1. Please encourage good hand washing practices with your children. Wash with soap and water for a minimum for 20seconds and rinse with clean running water. This practice is still the best preventative measure from becoming ill,

2. Teach your child to cough into tissue or their elbow when tissue is not available. Wash hands after,3. Drink plenty of fluids and eat nutritious foods that are high in protein and vitamins found in fresh fruits and

vegetables,4. Consult with your child's primary care doctor if your child has a fever of more than 100 degrees, or has flu-like

symptoms such as cough, runny nose, sore throat, shortness of breath, headache, chills, body aches, fatigue, vomiting or diarrhea. These symptoms are shared by both the flu and Covid-19 illnesses. Do not hesitate to reachout to your doctor if you or your child develop these symptoms,

5. Get plenty of rest,6. Wear a face covering while out in public unless you are under the age of 2 years,7. Maintain a physical distance of at least 6 feet from the person next to you,8. Stay in well- ventilated areas,9. As much as possible, spend time, especially during the holidays, with people in your own immediate household to

prevent the spread of any virus illnesses. For more information, please visit www.cdc.gov/flu

What you need to know about influenza (flu) from CDC Everything you need to know about flu viruses and flu illness, including symptoms, treatment and prevention. www.cdc.gov

Remember: "Healthy Children Learn Better." Have a fun, safe, and healthy holiday season.

MESSAGE FROM OUR PTA PRESIDENT

Happy

December. It’s hard to believe there are only a couple weeks left of school and we’re nearing the end of 2020. This has been an interesting year for sure. I want to thank everyone who has volunteered and organized events this year. Distance learning has been different, but it was so nice to still be able to have fun events like Book Fair and Reflections. Thank you!!

Spirit Wear Don’t forget, you can still purchase your Panther T-shirt, hat or Panther ears through the spirit wear store. If you are interested in ordering new Providencia Spirit Wear, please visit this site. https://providenciaspiritwear.square.site

PTA Meeting There is not a PTA Association meeting in December. But there is still time to become a PTA member. Becoming a member is all online, and super easy! https://jointotem.com/ca/burbank/providencia-elementary-pta

Lastly, there are a couple ways you can support PTA without even trying.

1. Register your Ralphs Rewards card at www.Ralphs.com. Just create anaccount, login, and click Community Rewards to search for Providencia andlink to your card. PTA gets a few thousand dollars a year from just a smallpercentage of families with linked cards. It really is the easiest way to earnmoney for our PTA.

2. Link Providencia to your Amazon Smile account. It’s another way for PTA toearn money, and who doesn’t love shopping on Amazon shopping!

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season. I look forward to seeing everyone in 2021!

Miss Carly’s CornerDon’t forget to make sure that your student joins my google classroom! These are grade based google classrooms where I can share social emotional and PBIS related activities.

Mindful Mondays We have now started Mindful Mondays! This is a chance for your students to get some more face to face interaction with me and see other classmates while starting off their Monday mornings on a positive note.

Mondays 8:15 AM Google Meet nickname: Mindful This article states “several studies suggest that kids who practice mindfulness tend to develop positive traits such as increased self-control, better attentiveness in class, and more empathy and respect for others. In addition, meditation may help children manage challenging conditions such as stress, depression, ADHD and hyperactivity.” See this link for more information: https://mindworks.org/blog/meditation-for-children/ Mindful Mondays will take place every Monday (unless announced otherwise/ if there is no school) at 8:15 and can be accessed in google meet using the nickname “Mindful”.

Perfect attendance If you have not already, please take a moment to view my video on attendance. It includes some important information on the attendance process and how you can best monitor your student’s attendance. https://youtu.be/3eQw0VC_6Ew

One reason you might want to check attendance is we have started to have perfect attendance dance parties! If your child has perfect attendance during a month, they will be invited to a special school-wide virtual dance party.

Join Miss Carly for Storytime every Friday! Every Friday at 1:00pm Miss Carly will host a live story time. This story time is often joined by special guest Marcy the dog or Second Step puppets.
