Narrative: Web design is a fast growing industry where we are pushing the boundaries of user experiences. With the amount of competition in the industry, it is important to keep website design updated and aligned with the latest trends. Topic #1: I am forecasting the futures of responsive web designs in 2026.

Narrative: Web design is a fast growing industry where we are pushing the boundaries of user experiences. With the amount of competition in the industry, it is important to keep website design updated and aligned with the latest trends. Today, online advertising already tailors its content to the specific interests of the user, and in the future websites will be doing the same with their content and look. principles of basic Responsive Web Design, RWD, is Web for All and Web on Everything. Fluid responsive websites are completely adaptive to different screen dimensions and the content is visible on all devices and resolutions.

Instead, what is important is the overall experience across all the different devices and screens. Basic responsive designing means creating your website so that it responds to the user’s environment based on screen size, platform, and orientation. “Fluid grids, flexible images, and media queries are the three technical ingredients for responsive web design, but it also requires a different way of thinking” (Ethan Marcotte).

Designing a responsive site is about aligning the purpose of a product with the user’s needs in a

specific content, allowing them to be more engaged with it more than ever before. Making a site age-

responsive is about providing readable content for any device that is relatable for the specific user, which may help drive traffic to specific sites by

varying age groups.

Stakeholder #1 Americans of varying age groups that access the internet. Today, about four-in-ten adults ages 65 and older don’t use the internet, compared to only 1% of 18 to 29 year olds that don’t. Despite some age groups having lower rates of internet adoption, the vast majority of Americans are online today and the number of non-users is continually decreasing. It’s also important to note that 25% of internet users in the US access it solely from a mobile device. This means that it’s crucial that websites are responsive and translate seamlessly to these devices.

Everyone wants to have a good user experience when visiting a website. Going online is an easy way

to connect with friends and family, get news and search for information. The more user-friendly a site is the more likely people are to return to it.

Topic #2: I am forecasting the futures of the need for graphic designers with interactive media experience in the labor force in 2026.

Narrative: Graphic designers/artists plan, analyze and create visual solutions to communication problems in an effort to find the most effective way to get a message across to viewers. Working in the graphic design field is ideal for people interested in web design, development, advertising and marketing, as these fields are continuing to expand along with technology. As technology evolves, so do design software and tools that affect how graphic design artwork looks. Individuals with a bachelor’s degree and knowledge of computer design software, specifically those with web site design and animation experience, will continue to have the most opportunities in the field. It’s important for graphic designers to keep up with the latest trends and news affecting their position in order to determine what their clients may be seeking next. This addition and incorporation of new technologies in the design industry will only continue to grow over the next decade.

information and expansion of the video entertainment market, including TV, movies, video, and made for internet outlets.

According to Victor, designers have the capacity to change the world because they have the expertise to design it. Practitioners need to understand just how integral design is to the conduct of life and what a responsibility they have as professionals. Graphic designers are shaping the world we live in and are often creating its values through the technologies they introduce and projects they complete.

Stakeholder #1 Entry to mid-level Graphic Designers. Unfortunately, many newcomers to the Graphic Design field become discouraged by the long hours and less than glamourous assignments and leave the profession within the first few years. It is unrealistic to expect overnight success as building a career takes time. If you’re serious about succeeding as a graphic designer, perseverance can pay off if your patient.

Understanding who the primary stakeholders are is crucial to determining the future of the graphic

design industry. In general, graphic designers with web site design and animation experience will have the best opportunities in the field in the future. This

doesn’t mean that people without it don’t have potential, it just means that more individuals

should delve into the possibility of expanding their current skill sets in order to remain competitive in

Key fact #2 for Future – Adaptive Web Design Where responsive web design struggles with layout, adaptive often excels (and vice versa). An adaptive website uses fixed sizes, based on pre-determined breakpoints, to deliver the most appropriate layout version for the screen size that browsers detect when the page first loads.

The benefits of an adaptive approach are: Better design control since the site is set to specific

breakpoints that you can design for.

Often easier to apply to an existing site to addsupport for small screen devices without need torecode that site from scratch.

The ability to deliver only the resources (images,scripts, etc.) that are necessary for a givenbreakpoint/version.

The drawbacks of adaptive are:

Instead, a solution for the future includes a combination of the two as multi-device web design is the future. Today both responsive and adaptive designs are potential solutions, however neither of them are as good on their own as they are when they are combined. Ultimately, this kind of thinking will help define the future of multi-device design.

6Key fact #3 for Future - RESS In Responsive Web Design implementations, Web URLs are consistent across devices and adapt their content based on the capabilities of the browser in which they are displayed. This means the same hyperlink can deliver a great experience across a wide range of devices. But in order to adapt effectively, Web sites generally need a single source order of markup, a single URL structure, and flexible media that can scale across screen sizes (which can become a performance challenge).

Server side solutions, on the other hand, only send what a client needs. So source order, URL structure, media, and application designs can be finely optimized for a specific device class before ever reaching its browser. But server-side solutions generally rely on user agent redirects to device-specific code templates. Each device class that warrants adaptation needs its own set of templates and these templates may ultimately contain duplicative code that actually applies to every class of device.

There are many benefits for both client and server side adaptions in web designs, but those do not come without limitations. RESS (Responsive Web Design + Server Side Components) combines adaptive layouts with server side component optimization. This means that a single set of page templates can define an entire Web site for all devices but key components within that site have device-class specific implementations that are rendered server side. RESS isn’t really a new method of web design, but instead a best practice for RWD and should be considered when attempting to stay ahead of the web design curve.

Key fact #4 for Future – RWD Web development is one of the most exciting fields to be in right now. It really hit its stride when the smartphone made its triumphant debut a few years ago, but that was just the beginning.

7common. You’ve surely noticed the proliferation of similar WordPress themes, as well as websites that borrow UI elements (buttons, menus, etc.) from iOS and Android.

Trend 3: The Semantic Web Will Come of Age

Thanks to emerging developments in the field of machine learning, computers (and search engine algorithms) will become better and better at intuiting not just the meaning, but the intent behind content on the web. You’ll be able to ask off-the-cuff questions — even detailed ones — and expect a useful answer.

Key fact #5 for Future - Positive User Experience According to Google’s Think Insights on Mobile, if a user lands on your mobile website and is frustrated or doesn’t see what they are looking for, there’s a 61% chance they will leave immediately and go to another website (most likely a competitor). It’s also said that if they have a positive experience with your mobile website a user is 67% more likely to buy a product or use a service. According to the Google PageSpeed Developers standards recommends that the content above the fold on a mobile device loads in under 1 second and the entire page loads in under 2 seconds. This is typically not possible when loading a desktop website on a mobile device. When a user has to wait too long for a page to load, there’s an extremely high chance they will leave your site.

Moving forward it will be extremely critical that websites provide mobile users an easy-to-use experience. Having a mobile website is no longer simply a nice feature, rather it is a necessity and literally impact the growth of your business. Adding in other features, like age-responsiveness will create an even more dynamic experience which can result in a higher retention of site visitors/users.

A true responsive site needs to be able to predict your visitor’s next move and serve up content they will like in order to keep them engaged for a longer time.

Algorithms collect data from all over the internet about your behavior, content you clicked or liked, demographics such as age and gender, location, and whether you’re a new or regular visitor to the site. All that data is then analyzed, and predictions are made about what you would like to see next. It’s almost like the machine is in your head – without the frightening connotation of being trapped within the matrix. By using these algorithms, you candesign a responsive pathway throughout your site whichkeeps your users engaged. You can serve up the rightcontent every time – not just the new stuff. You’ll also beable to show them the golden oldies if that’s what they’reafter.

What we can do to have a sense of the future is to look at what’s happening today. Of course, to predict the future, we first have to understand the past. Web design is always changing with the times – morphing and shifting with current moods, consumer needs and new artistic visions. Learning how to adapt to these changes and needs will ultimately determine if a site is going to be successful or well received by the user.

Whether we use sleight of hand to make the web feel invisible, bend it to create touchable experiences or morph it to make it adapt to us at all times, the next 9,000 days of the web are in our hands.

Website #3 Responsive Design: Working on all platforms.

It’s an interesting circle: Web design influences how people use websites…but how people use websites also influences web design. And right now (and in the future), people are accessing websites via their mobile devices.

The overwhelming presence of smartphones means web designers must now design websites to be viewed optimally on all platforms – whether that involves smartphones, tablets or laptops. That makes this the age of Responsive Design.

That also means designers will use taller web pages (instead of wider pages), which lend themselves to scrolling. Designers will also be anticipating that users rely more now on making screen swipes instead of clicking on buttons.

This will produce a major visual shift in web design: the end of mandatory above-the-fold photos, which have been a staple of web design for some time.

The visual appearance of website will be changing in the future, and we’re already starting to see that shift now – from Flat Design to Material Design. The ultimate goal with material design is to create web design where the functionality coexists peacefully with the best visuals possible. But if people can’t see the visuals, is it really making an impact? Currently, responsive web design is critical to web design but it’s going to be important that it evolves over time into something bigger. One of the great qualities of responsive design is that the template responds based on the dimensions of the screen, not the device that is being used. This means that regardless of the device the webpage is being shown on it should display in a user-friendly way even if a new mobile device is created with a new screen size and resolution. Having the adaptions not only for device size but also based on the specific user will make ultimate retention of the site visitor increase. People need to be able to see the information in order to actually interpret it and determine if it’s relevant to what they’re looking for.

Website #4 How to design websites for the latest technology

In 1976 computers started to appear in offices; by 1986 they were becoming popular in homes with models like the Commodore 64 and ZX Spectrum; in 1996 the internet was taking off with around 50,000 websites and in 2006 mobile web devices and responsive web design were new phenomena.

We can’t predict what new technology will be invented next, however we can take into account what technology is already in development and design and optimize websites with those things in our minds. A lot of this is about designing for user-experience. As Google gets smarter, it will more closely mimic a human being, so think first about people (and what they need individually) and second about technology and devices.

There are over a billion websites, accessed by all manner of devices and progress is continuing as computers double in speed and memory roughly every two years. So, how do you design for the future? How can you create a website now, using today’s technology to make it as future-proof as possible? How can you optimize it for Google and future-proof it against future SEO updates, or even a new search engine?

Website #5 – You May Be Losing Users if Responsive Web Design Is Your Only Mobile Strategy

Designers and developers have been oversimplifying the problem of mobile since 2000, and some people now think that responsive web design is the answer to all of our problems.

We need to understand that, beyond any other goal, a mobile web experience must be lightning fast. Delivering a fast, usable and compatible experience to all mobile devices has always been a challenge, and it’s no different when you are implementing a responsive technique. Embracing performance from the beginning is easier.

Responsive web design is great, but it’s not a silver bullet. If it’s your only weapon for mobile, then a performance problem might be hindering your conversion rate. Around 11% of the websites are responsive, and the number is growing every month, so now is the time to talk about this. According to Guy Podjarny’s research, 72% of responsive websites deliver the same number of bytes regardless of screen size, even on slow mobile network connections. Not all users will wait for your website to load. With just a basic understanding, we can minimize this loss.

When you set responsive design as a goal, it becomes easy to lose perspective. However, knowing your goals, can help you determine which tools and techniques are best to achieve them. This is when you analyze where and how to use a responsive approach. You use responsive design — you don’t achieve it. The point of creating adaptive sites is to create functional user experiences for a growing number of web-enabled devices and contexts. So, in an effort to deal with all this diversity, we need to actively take matters into our own hands and do all we can to create more contextually-aware, flexible experiences for our users.

Creating mobile-optimized sites, whether responsive, device experience, RESS, or other, is a good idea. Better experiences by users mean more conversions, more engagement and a better chance the user will walk away with a positive feeling about your brand, service or product.

At its core, Responsive Web Design is about serving the same HTML to every device and adapting its presentation based on the specific capabilities of the device being used to access it. HTML markup has a source order, which defines how a Web page is rendered by a browser. While HTML elements can be repositioned using JavaScript and CSS, doing so reliably across a wide range of devices can be challenging.Consider the simple example of a site-wide navigation menu. On devices with large screens and mouse/keyboard input, it's quite common to position this type of menu at the top of a Web page because:

There's enough screen space available so actualcontent isn't likely to be pushed off screen.

There's often a need to communicate what'savailable on the site through a set of keycategories or actions.

It's potentially quicker to access these top-levelcategories or actions when they are aligned withthe edge of the screen/browser. Since globalnavigation makes sense at the top of a Web page,it tends to come first in markup source order. Ondevices with small screens and touch input,however, it often makes sense to position thesame global navigation at the bottom of a Webpage because:

There's not a lot of screen space so globalnavigation menus can quickly push actual contentoff-screen.

Instant access to content usually trumpsnavigation tasks on devices with small screens andlow bandwidth. (It probably does on all devices butmobile constraints emphasize the need most.)

Ergonomic factors make it easier to hit touchtargets at the bottom of the screen (especiallywith one handed use).

Many decisions of web design deal with overall site performance and speed of development. As the use of mobile devices continues to increase, we need to find more ways to tackle the challenge of creating good web experiences across multiple devices.

It is important that not only does the site need to have good overall performance, but it also needs to be the individual needs of the viewer. Without that, the design may not matter enough to keep the user on the page.

In general, new technological breakthroughs take about 20-30 years before they are broadly adopted as the newnorm. Ironically it is at that point, 20-30 years later thatthey become widely known as “the next big thing” eventhough they’ve been around for quite some time in limitedcircles consisting of inventors, theorists, and advancedresearch labs like the MIT Media Lab or DARPA (DefenseAdvanced Research Projects Agency). A few goodexamples include: the internet itself, email, and wearablecomputers.

Right now there are a few dominate trends in web design: responsive design, single page design, card design, and material design. These trends are all responses to the technology we use to interact with our content such as desktop and laptop personal computers, phones, and tablets. All of which use glass displays that mimic physical documents in a digital manner and which, on a fundamental level, have not significantly changed for decades.

We’ve all seen plugins or apps that start out functioning fine but look ugly that over time get updates to their design that make them both highly functional and quite beautiful. In this way, design is even farther behind the curve than the technology we’re adopting some 20-30 years after it was invented. It might take people some time to adapt to new web designs ideas, such as age-responsive design, but after it’s out long enough to have the ‘bugs’ worked out I think that it truly will be a very valuable tool that businesses can use.

Insightful Article#4 – Can Responsive Design Future-Proof the Web?

The ubiquity of mobile devices creates multiple consumer touchpoints for businesses, yet it also presents technical and design challenges. With mobile overtaking desk and laptops this year, businesses have a choice between two approaches to mobile web design–responsive and discrete. Responsive design has emerged as a popular approach, fueled by a desire to “create once, publish everywhere.” The lure of responsive design, however, and the promise of “future-proofing” a website present a development dilemma, as businesses may find it limiting depending on their overall goals.

Responsive designs can create simple, consistent user experiences across a multitude of devices, but they are not a one size fits all solution. Content strategists must understand how designing for responsive affects copy and content. Additionally, reviewing work in responsive design requires ongoing input across different devices, rather than intermittent wireframe reviews and digital and mobile departments must be integrated to make responsive design work. It’s crucial that businesses think carefully about their users’ experiences, as well as their overall business goals, content, organizational structure and technical expertise when designing their website. This would be true for both regular and age-responsive designs.

13Why choosing a methodology matters. Responsive is more than just a buzzword, yet not everyone understands what it means. Very often, when companies say they want a responsive site, they mean one designed for ubiquity. Obviously, every business wants to have an effective presence across all digital channels. But responsive design is a very specific implementation.

Choosing a design framework should not be left to designers and developers; instead, it’s an important strategic decision, as there are significant business implications in both the short and long term. Most critically, user needs should determine the approach chosen. In addition to the user experience, there are implications for cost and maintenance, flexibility and future extensibility, and ultimately, even how an organization is structured.

Respected Author #2 - John Allsopp

If anybody should be able to predict the future, John Allsopp is more qualified than most. He is, after all, the man who just might have coined the inglorious term ‘Web 2.0' (he can document his usage of it before Tim O'Reilly popularized the phrase).

Allsopp is also feted as one of responsive design's founding fathers. His essay, ‘A Dao of Web Design' was published in 2000. In it he encourages designers to let go of print's rigidity and embrace the web's fluidity. Ethan Marcotte cites Allsopp's essay as one of his key inspirations.

Along with adding cost to web design projects, complexity also brings other problems to the table – not least concerns about the availability and longevity of the other systems your product relies on. Complexity is the last thing that users want. That’s why adding in an age-responsive design can help users and gain their ‘loyalty’ to a site.

14Today, Webflow lets designers build responsive websites using a drag-and-drop website builder with an intuitive interface in order to customize their site with common web elements, like sliders, maps, buttons, divs, videos, social widgets, and more. On the backend, Webflow generates W3C-compliant HTML5 and CSS3 code. There aren’t many competitors for a service like this, beyond to some extent, Bootstrap, Foundation or Adobe’s Edge Reflow – but those require more a more advanced skill set to use.

Currently age-responsive design is not something WebFlow offers, but down the line after there is time and research backing, they could potentially offer it as one of their package designs.

Stakeholder #2 Elderly (People Over 65)

If you work in the tech industry, it’s easy to forget that older people exist. Most tech workers are really young, so it’s easy to see why most technology is designed for young people. But consider this: By 2030, around 19% of people in the US will be over 65. Doesn’t sound like a lot? Well it happens to be about the same number of people in the US who own an iPhone today. Which of these two groups do you think Silicon Valley spends more time thinking about?

Key lessons:

Avoid font sizes smaller than 16 pixels (dependingof course on device, viewing distance, line heightetc.).

Let people adjust text size themselves.

Pay particular attention to contrast ratios withtext.

Avoid blue for important interface elements. Always test your product using screen readers.

Provide subtitles when video or audio content isfundamental to the user experience.

While the ageing process is different for everyone, we all go through a level of fundamental changes. For example, older people tend to be significantly happier and better at appreciating what they have. However, ageing makes some things harder, and one of those things is using technology. A lot of people in the tech industry talk about “changing the world” and “making people’s lives better.” But bad design is excluding specific age groups in the population from the benefits of technology. Following some simple principles and incorporating age-responsive design can help create more inclusive products that work better for everyone.

1. Audio Responsive Web Pages

To truly evolve the web, designers need to develop new ideas and systems. Simply painting over the cracks won't suffice. New technologies need to adjust to the technological advancements and changing user behaviors in our economy and society. There are murmurs that audio responsive web pages (where users will be able to navigate themselves around the web simply by using their voice) could be the next chapter. This is an understandable development if you consider Siri, Cortana and OK Google are already available and used today. Other sources have indicated the tightening of tendons in the wrist could overcome the problems of 'fat thumbs' or the clenching of the fist could replace swiping or clicking. The future really is open to solutions we can't even comprehend just now. For the time being, responsive web design is critical to web design. One of the great qualities of responsive design is that the template responds based on the dimensions of the screen, not the device that is being used. This means that regardless of the device the webpage is being shown on it should display in a user-friendly way even if a new mobile device is created with a new screen size and resolution.

Before reading this article, I had not even thought about the idea of audio responsive web pages. I think this could be an awesome addition to webpages. This is an interesting concept and goes along with the ideas of Siri, Cortana and OK Google. I think it shows the growth of technologies and how that can ultimately affect where the future of the design of webpages is also going.

2. Growth of Mobile Devices

From plugins to separate, mobile-specific sites, there are any number of mobile solutions available. However, none of these solutions are as comprehensive as getting a responsively designed website. This is especially true in the context of the increasing diversity of internet-enabled “smart” technology. Knowing what separates these two methods can give some insight to their futures. Both responsively designed and mobile-friendly websites are a good way to show relevant content on smartphones.

The key difference between the two is the way each setup responds to a smartphone:

A mobile friendly site is often a completely separate andstreamlined version of your main site, your server detects thedevice and prioritizes which site to display depending on weatherit is a smartphone or desktop detected.

In a responsive design, the website itself shrinks and grows to fitwhatever device or window size it finds itself in.

This is where the paths of these two methods diverge. The “now” may be in smartphones but the future is in wearable smart technology. Smart watches and smart glasses are already here, and the amount of technology that will be able to access the internet is expected to explode in the near future. Some experts expect that by 2020 there will be as many as 25 billion internet capable devices, a majority of which may not be smartphones.

The growth of the mobile (phone/tablet/etc.) industry has a huge influence on responsive web design. It is no longer just a nice feature, but it is instead a necessary one to have. As we see this boom, it is important to forecast where we think it is going in the future and the numbers tell us that it will only continue. As this continues to grow, designers must continue to find ways to be innovative to keep up with the trends in the industry. I think that this needs to not only be applied to regular websites, but also mobile and tablets and then onto watches and glasses and whatever else is developed in the industry. 3. Adaptive Designs

We’re already starting to see the limitations of responsive design. With the new types of content people are interacting with (such as 4K resolution, 3D images, and 3D printing), we have limitations on the ways we visualize content. Design is needing to become adaptive rather than responsive. Adaptive design is the idea of a user consuming content in such a way that it connects seamlessly with whatever device they’re using. Adaptive design focuses on the user not the browser. Unlike responsive design that just scales to fit different screen sizes, adaptive web design changes to fit the device it’s on.

Technology and the expansion of mobile websites are pushing web designers to re-think how their work is displayed across various devices.Responsive web designs were implemented to fit a need of the people when we went from just desktop computers to mobile phones and tablets. Now we are going one step further and adding in devices such as smart watches. Not only do web sites need to be responsive for these devices since they have such a small screen size, but really they need to be adaptive. Not everything is necessary here and it’s important that the site is ultimately smart enough to adapt to this environment. We aren’t just stopping at responsive, but instead we must continue to be innovative and keep up with the new technologies that will be added to the market down the line.

4. RESS: Responsive Website with Service Side Detection

While RWD has entered with a bang and made a comfortable place for itself amongst the most happening technologies of the day, for it to grow further, efforts need to be made to make it more easy and light. One step in that direction is the emergence of RESS, which is defined as a “responsive website with server side detection.” In simple words, with this technique, detection and recognition of the device making a call to the website is transferred to the server side, instead of the client side. The server finds out whether it is a tablet or a PC requesting the website, and send only the code pertaining to that platform to the client. Therefore, the code traveling to the device is largely reduced, and so is the time spent by the device in loading it. And so, better performance and more simplicity.

22RESS is a good starting point for how a server determines what type of device a user is on. While this is a good starting point, it is going to be important that this technology continues to grow so that it cannot only identity mobile vs. desktop but also determine what kind of mobile device we are on. I think this shows a good amount of growth going forward and the potential we have in the ability to create something that can tell us more about the end user in order to create the best experience possible.

5. Future Friendly Responsive Site Designs

One size no longer fits all when talking about web design. Sure, you can design lots of apps, sites and experiences to fit every conceivable digital platform, device, or screen size, but to what end? Chasing down every new technology is expensive and time-consuming. It can also be confusing and frustrating for your customers. Instead, develop a “Future Friendly” Responsive site, where content is available on a single URL and reformats automatically to work on a variety of devices. The Responsive Web Design methodology keeps costs at bay by limiting duplicate efforts and simplifying long-term maintenance. As new technology and devices are developed, Responsive Web Design allows for easier adoption, making your customer’s online experience a positive one.

When people went from strictly desktop computers to mobile devices the web had to change. It doesn’t stop here – we need to continue to design in an effort to keep up with people’s needs. I believe that this is going to happen again when we add more devices and needs (ie. Smart watches and even age responsive design). Getting this future-friendly responsive site is important and it happened once, and I believe it will happen again.

To hear watch without the word smart in front of it will soon be indicative of a heirloom description. Even luxury watch brands have embraced smartwatches with some exciting announcements having already been made this year and more set to come. In 2015, we saw Apple finally take the plunge into the smartwatch market, Pebble hit us with not one but three new smartwatches in one year alone, and LG dive even further into the pool with yet another smarter offering. So what else do we have to look forward to? Well, there are plenty of devices left to keep an eye out for. It seems 2015 was the year of intelligent wrist adornment and 2016 has continued the trend, so here are all the best smartwatches to

First we had smart phones and that has since expanded into smart watches from companies such as Apple and even Michael Kors. This is just the beginning – more and more companies are beginning to grab onto this trend and it’ll be important for web sites to match up with the devices that users are on. And this will only continue in the future – who knows what will be next? But what we do know is that web sites will have to continue to respond to these trends and additions to the marketplace.

7. Smart Glasses

The Juniper Research study suggests that, in 2020, over 12 million consumer smart glasses will ship, and most of the growth in the market will arrive after 2017. Given that there were fewer than one million devices shipped in 2016 over the entire market, that's a fairly big gain. The biggest hit to the market came with the departure of Google Glass, a hit so big it actually knocked the market about 15 months behind previous schedule. The arrival of several new devices, however—Sony's, the Magic Leap and the Microsoft HoloLens—should likely perk the market back up and achieve those sales targets noted earlier.

Yet another article on the future of wearable technologies and where we might be headed in the next several years. I think this article does a good job highlighting the fact that even though they might not have been successful off the bat, it is important to remember that is how new technologies go sometimes. Smart watches were not successful right out of the gate, but look at them now. We are going to have to continue to adapt our web designs to meet whatever it is that is launches in the future, that is important to the overall success of design.

Did you know for example that there is already a ‘virtual reality browser’? It’s called ‘Janus VR‘ and it’s a completely new way to experience the web. Here you walk around a virtual lobby and pass through doorways to visit specific URLs. These URLs then appear as museums with text on the walls that you can walk around and read. Videos appear as separate theatre rooms that play when you enter them and sites that have been optimized for the

24browser will even feature 3D models, animations and lights and sounds. A huge community has sprung up around the tool and already there are some amazing things to see and experience through the browser: one minute you can be exploring through the woods and listening to calming music, the next you can be reading about a historical figure via a plaque written on a huge statue. Better yet, you can meet other users browsing the same website and chat with them about shared interests.

This is an entirely new form of web design but it’s likely to continue to grow, so it’s important to start considering how a website looks to virtual reality users. This poses some unique challenges to designers and developer in the future, but it’s just the beginning. This shows that the sky is really the limit – the number of layouts that are required are really endless and designers are going to need to learn how to adapt to that challenge sooner rather than later to keep up.

9. SEO for Mobile Devices

On April 21, 2015, Google changed the rules for mobile search in a big, big way. For the very first time, the search engine takes the mobile-friendliness of a website into account as a ranking factor in search results. In the past, Google preferred sites that followed certain best practices on mobile devices (like avoiding the use of Flash) and last year began adding labels in search results that told you whether or not a site was mobile-friendly. However, content was far-and-away still king of search when it came to rankings. If your content matched what a mobile user was looking for, you were pretty well set. This has changed. Content is still very important, but Google is also now looking at the overall design and user experience a visitor will get on mobile. So, the best SEO for mobile devices means adhering to some best practices, such as ensuring links aren’t too close together (so wayward thumbs won’t click the wrong one) and text is appropriately sized.

Google is requiring websites to be responsive now, but in the future what is ‘responsive’ going to mean? Will there be a variety of levels to what responsiveness means? If a site only fits phones, tablets and desktops will it get a certain number a points and if it fits watches and other technologies will it get more? I believe this is a good indicator of where we are headed in the future. Responsive web design is going to have to continue to adapt to expanding technologies in the marketplace and this

10. Rapid Prototyping Tools

Rapid Prototyping Tools are the tools that can be used by all type of designers including UX, UI, and Web designers. They enable designers to create high fidelity prototypes of websites quickly and easily. The prototyping tools help the designers to measure the aesthetics and the usability of websites without having to perform any sort of coding in any form. Designers can create a website in the browser itself and can directly launch it from the tool. The simplicity and functionality of these tools allow the designers to know how the finished product would look in the end. The option to work from the browser lets them save precious hours and resources. Rapid prototyping tools also save the designers from following the traditional cumbersome methods of creating static wireframes and mockups for each client. They can now use the tools to explain every subtle transition and animation, with much more accuracy and efficacy.

Having these rapid prototyping tools can help designers in the future as they continue to have to design for more devices than strictly mobile phones and desktops. Sites will not only have to be responsive, but also be accurate and efficient to help with the overall user experience. Being able to have tools like this will be beneficial to future trends, such as adaptive design or age-responsive design.

Some experts expect that by 2020 there will be as many as 25 billion internet capable devices, a majority of which may not be smartphones.

The future of mobile devices is well speculated on, however it is uncertain on what the industry will all be comprised of in the future: smart watches, smart phones, smart glasses, and whatever new things are on the horizon. Long-term tech trends are often difficult to predict with any degree of accuracy. With smaller and more powerful devices being made available for lower and lower costs, smart watches and smart glasses may be just the beginning. It is important that designers can create web sites that will fit the needs of the users and their new devices. We wouldn’t want to view a full web site on a watch, or at this point even a version that was made for an iPhone – that is not something that will fit. It is important for web sites to have designs that their users can actually use on their devices as it would be a shame to deter customers because it is not friendly to their viewing preference or format.

Adaptive Web Design – is this the new future of web design?

Today a website can be viewed on any number of devices. With adaptive design, the way you interact with a website on a desktop would be different from how you interact with that same website on a touch-controlled device like a table. Interacting with that same website on a device that utilizes voice and motion controls, like an Xbox One, would also be fundamentally different in a true adaptive design landscape. As this is such a new idea, it is highly uncertain, however it is also highly important. We’ve entered an era of unlimited possibilities; traveling beyond a desktop to laptops, mobile phones, Androids and iOS, tablets, iPods, smart watches and now virtual reality. As Charles Darwin puts it, “it is not the strongest or the most intelligent who will survive but those who can best manage change.” So the future of the business world in responsive web design depends on the audience and the use of their devices, allocated budgets, and the use or misuse of responsiveness. It is so important that companies are able to create and design web sites that are adaptive to meet the needs of their users, but at this point the future of what those devices might be is uncertain.

Google’s SEO Rules in the Future Google changed the rules in 2015 about the importance of web sites mobile-friendliness by taking it into account as a ranking factor in search results. With the uncertainty of what devices are in the future, it is highly uncertain on what rules Google will apply to the SEO in the future, however it is extremely important that web sites continue to adapt and meet these ‘standards’ that are set. Search engine optimization is a set of rules that can be followed by web site owners to optimize their web sites for search engines and thus improve their search engine rankings. It is also a great way to increase the quality of their web sites by making them user- friendly, faster and easier to navigate. In today’s competitive market SEO is more important than ever. Search engines serve millions of users per day looking for answers to their questions or for solutions to their problems. Ultimately, SEO can help a business grow and meet the overall business objectives. It is important for web sites to meet Googles requirements since a good SEO approach can drive more traffic to a web site, blog or on-line store and gain more customers, make sales and fulfil your business purpose. So designers need to keep up with the trends in the industry in order to retain a good SEO ranking with Google.

It’sstillcrazytothinkthatIusetolugaroundmylaptopeverytimeIwantedtogointotheofficeto

work,orthefactthatonlyafewyearsbeforethatIcouldn’teventakemycomputerwithmebecauseit

wasadesktop.ThenwhenIfinallygotasmartphonein2011,IlovedthatIhadaccesstotheinternet

24/7,howeverIhadtozoom-inonalotofwebsitesbecausetheyweren’toptimizedformobileyet,

makingthemreallydifficulttoviewonmydevice.So,whileitwasconvenient,itwasn’talwayseffective

oreasytouse.

It’sprettyobviousthattechnologyhasgrownsubstantiallyinthepasttenyears,howeverourdevices

haveshrunkinphysicalsize,whiletheadditionofmorefeaturesseemstotakeuplessspace–now

Technologyandtheexplosionofmobilewebsiteshaspushedwebdesignerstore-thinkhowourworkis

We’veallgotthatonecustomerthatiseverydesignersnightmare-theonewhowantstohavethebestwebsiteeverwithfirstpageSEOrankingbutisn’twillingtoputthemoneyintoit.WellthatcustomerformeisABXandIhavetomeetwiththeirCEOintenminutestoexplainwhatproblemsIseewiththeircurrentwebsiteandwhyIthinkitneedsacostly,completefacelift.ThesearethekindsofclientsItrytoavoidtakingon,howeverthiswasoneIcouldn’tgetoutofbecausetheCEOismysister-in-law’sbestfriendJulia.

IheadedouttothelobbytogetJuliaandbringherbacktotheboardroomwhereIhadawholepresentationsetuponwhatIthoughtneededtochangeinordertogethertheresultsshewantedforABX.However,Iknewitwasgoingtotakealotofconvincingtogethertoinvestanykindofmoneyintheproject.

Iwalkeddownthehalltowardtheboardroom,goteachofusacupofcoffeeandpulledupmypresentation.IlovethefactthatIcancontroltheprojectorintheroomwithafewclicksofmytablet,asit’ssomucheasierthanwhenIhadtologintotheVisitorcomputerandtryandfindmypresentationinthemessoffilesitstored.Usingmyowndeviceissomuchmorereliable.

“Tostart,ItookalookatABX’scurrentwebsitetoseehowitperformedonamultitudeofdevices,andunfortunatelyitwasn’tverycompatibleacrosstheboard.Itseemsthatyourwebsiteisn’tresponsiveormobilefriendlyandwithtoday’sSEOrequirementsthat’samajorissue.PoorGoogleSEOrankingisduetonotutilizingresponsivesitedesignsandinsteadstillusingsitesthatareunderadifferentdomainnameinordertobemobilefriendly.Sinceyou’renotmobile-friendly,you’realsolikelytakingahitinyourmobilesearchranking.Itappearsthatyoursitehasnotbeenupdatedsincethelaunchofage-responsivenesswhichmeansthatit’sdefinitelytimeforanupdateandyou’vecometotherightplace.Ithinkyou’llreallyliketheadditionoftheage-responsivenessandIknowyourcustomerswilltoo.”

Julialookedatmeforaminute,justabsorbingwhatIhadpresented.Finally,shesaid,“Iwantmywebsitetohaveaforum,andablog,ande-commerce,andphotos,andvideos,andpodcasts,andaplacewherepeoplecanmaketheirownprofileandtalktootherpeoplelikeTwitter.”

Typically,Ilikedwhenacustomerknewwhattheywantedoutoftheirwebsite,howeverIknewtherewasanimportantquestiontobeasked.“Ok,doyouhaveabudgetinmindforthisproject?”

AftercountlesshoursworkingonSEOterms,collectingdataonusers,andputtingtogetherthenewresponsivedesign,wewereabletocreateawebsitethatdeliveredthebestmobileexperiencepossible.Treehouse’snewwebsitenotonlytakesintoconsiderationthedevicethatiscurrentlydisplayingthewebsite,butitalsoconsidersthedemographicoftheviewer.Thecolors,fonts,andtypesizesallchangebasedupontheviewer.ThesenewfeaturesallowfortopofpagerankingonGoogle,effectivelytargetusers,andthesitehasalowerbounceratethanitpreviouslydid.AlowbouncerateisagoodindicatortoGooglethatawebsiteisprovidinguserswithatop-notchexperience,andthiscanhelpimproveawebsite’soverallSEO.So,eventhoughwebsiteswon’tbepenalizedindesktopsearchesfornotbeingmobile-friendly,youactuallycouldpotentiallygetabumpintherankingsifyouare.Thiskeepsthingsfocusedandsimplefromacontentandlinkperspective.
