    A third generation

    cephalosporin that

    inhibits cell wallsynthesis, promoting

    osmotic instability;usually bactericidal.

    This medication is

    a cephalosporin

    antibiotic,prescribed for

    certain bacterialinfections such as

    gonorrhea, pelvic

    inflammatorydisease, middle ear

    infection,meningitis

    (inflammation of

    the covering of thebrain), and

    infections of thelungs, ears, skin,

    urinary tract,

    blood, bones andjoints and typhoid.

    It is also use asperioperative

    prophylaxis.

    Contraindicated in

    patients

    hypersensitivity todrug or other

    cephalosporins.

    CNS: headache,

    dizziness

    CV: phlebitisGI: pseudomem-

    branous colitis,nausea, vomiting,

    diarrhea

    GU: generalpruritus, candidiasis

    Hematologic:eosinophilia,

    thrombocytosis,

    leucopeniaSkin: pain,

    induration,tenderness at the

    injection site, rash,

    pruritusOther: hypersen-

    sitivity reactions,serum sickness,

    anaphylaxis, fever,

    chills.

    Assess patientsprevious sensitivity

    reaction to penicillin

    or othercephalosphoroins.

    Assess patient forsigns and symptoms

    of infection beforeand during the

    treatment.

    Obtain C&S beforebeginning drug

    therapy to identify ifcorrect treatment has

    been initiated.

    Assess for allerficreaction.

    Monitor hematologic,electrolytes, renal andhepatic function.

    Assess for possiblesuperinfection:

    itching, fever,

    malaise, redness ordiarrhea.
