Ready to be Inspired?

I was unprepared for how many pictures of lovely and imaginative quilts I would receive when requesting submissions for this compilation in August! One of the things that struck me the most was how different and beautiful even the simplest jelly roll patterns turned out when filtered through the creative lens of different quilters.   The Jelly Roll Race pattern is one of the first patterns most new jelly roll users try, so I expected we’d get a lot of race pictures. What I didn’t expect was how different they all turned out! Changing strip lengths and creative use of color can take the same pattern and and spit out two entirely different looking quilts! Enjoy.  Note: some of these are not exactly jelly roll races, but they fit in best here.   Shirley P writes: “These are not finished quilts, but were demo tops made to show my group/class how they were made.”

This lovely quilt’s creator prefers to remain anonymous! If not, she’d have too many

people calling asking her to make them quilts ;)

Melissa F.’s pink accents turn this jelly roll race into a work of art!

Kathleen B. writes: “I made this with a partial jelly roll and various remnants... My picture/my non pattern which can be shared.”

This is one of my favorites!

Look at these gorgeous patriotic fabrics! A stunning quilt:

From the creator: “Created and quilted by Millie Webber Arnold with love for my grandson, Chase.  ‘Patriotic’ “

I’m guessing Eloisa D.’s pattern was not exactly a jelly roll race, but the bricks remind me of a jelly roll race. So here it is! She writes: “This is for my niece who graduated from high school valedictorian, 4.20 GPA, and was awarded a Presidential

Scholarship!”  Way to go, niece! You deserve this quilt!

Regan P’s race, lovely in red/black/white! (We happen to have red/black/white blender rolls in the store right now that are perfect for copycatting Regan’s quilt!)

Wendy D. made this lovely race from several grab bag jelly rolls!

Page 18: Jelly Roll Inspirationsjellyrollsfabric.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/Jelly-Roll... · Jelly Roll Inspirations Part One: Jelly Roll Race Quilts Compiled By Liz Katsuro Louise R.’s

Julie P. writes: “It is my very first quilt, and I’m learning as I go along.  I will now have to figure out how to do the edges, batting, quilting, etc.  However, I’m very happy about

how the quilt turned out.” First attempt is a home run! Nice job, Julie!

We currently have a batik jelly roll that is very similar to the colors in Julie’s quilt!

Sarah B., who made the sweet twin races a few pages back, has a few more tricks up her sleeve…

 This is so much fun!

If you’re a polka dot lover, we’ve got a big dot roll with 20 different prints and colors!

Janice S. writes: I made this from strips and donated it to Hospice here in Madras Or. for a

raffle that they had.

Gorgeous AND for a good cause!

Laura writes: “I made this quilt for my cousin and her new baby girl. I knocked it out in one day. Super easy with the jelly roll! “

Love it! Perfect baby girl colors!

Kimberley writes: My name is Kimberley and I live in the outback in South Australia, Australia. This is my first quilt I have made. We have had a community Red Earth Festival in the last 2 weeks and I attended a quilting work shop that was held over 3 evenings. I went for the “Happy go Lucky” Jelly roll as that is how I see myself. I asked for the red backing so I was able to sew on Sturt desert Peas. I liked this as it was different and nobody else in the class did this. I also wanted the red backing as this quilt is going into our roof top tent as we go camping. Also our state flower is the Sturt Desert Pea.

     The backing, and Kimberley’s inspiration!

I think Kimberley is proof that if you want your very first quilt to be gorgeous, try a race! ;)

Bethany J’s elephants! I love this one!

Turns out the race is a perfect background for appliqué!

And last, but certainly not least, Elizabeth P.’s races! Anyone who knows me, knows purple is my favorite color. Pippa the dog seems to agree!

Pippa the dog lounging on a gorgeous race!

Elizabeth writes: Here is my second one, made with my Grand‐daughter, for her bedroom.  She has only just started to sew, so I bought her a sewing machine for her 13th birthday. She was thrilled to bits.

She looks it! A great time to learn to sew, and she’ll be a pro in no time!

So what have we learned here?

I don’t know about you, but it seems pretty clear to me that no two races turn out alike ‐ and all end up just lovely! I hope you were inspired by these quilts as much as I was. I think about fabric as a full‐time job and I often think I can’t possibly think of any new color combination, but these quilts proved me wrong!  We’ve been adding lots of new 20‐fabric jelly rolls to our store at http://jellyrollfabric.net and I believe I’ll make that my focus for the rest of the month!   If I’ve missed your Jelly Roll Race picture – especially if I replied to you that I had received it! – please email me. We didn’t receive a single quilt picture that we didn’t want to use in this e‐book, and any omission was in error! For our future readers, if you have a jelly roll race quilt you’d like to submit, please just send it straight to me at [email protected] with “Jelly Roll Race picture” in the subject and we’ll include it in our next edition!  Stay tuned for Jelly Roll Inspirations Part Two coming in a few days! :D  Liz K. Owner of http://jellyrollfabric.net
