JELLY ROLL CHALLENGE
at The Universe of Quilts Sponsored by Ivy Thimble Quilt and Gift Shop
Friday, June 5, 2015, 9:30 til finished
Rules, supply list and registration form
The jelly roll challenge is a time for fun, friendly competition, and an opportunity to provide a quilt to a veteran. Lend your skill and time to have some fun and feel good about what’s accomplished.
What you will be doing: in a team of 2 (you sign up w/ someone to work with), you will take a jelly roll (roll of 40 – 2 ½ inch strips) sew them together end to end (will be demonstrated) to complete a quilt top, then layer and quilt it and finish it with binding. Everyone starting at the same time: the first team done will win. We have been told this is a quick project and you should finish w/ no problem. Working in a team, you can take turns sewing, help untwist the fabric (it will twist, it’s about 1600 inches long when all sewn together) and then work on the quilting and binding. There will be a scheduled break for ½ hour lunch, but working in a team you can schedule other breaks for each of you as needed!
What will be provided: The JELLY ROLLs are all a variety of red, white and blue fabrics generously provided by Ivy Thimble Quilt and Gift Shop, along w/ the batting for completing the quilts; backing fabric is provided by the quilt club; basic pattern/instructions, irons and ironing boards (pattern recommends no ironing until all the sewing for the top is DONE) and LUNCH.
What you need to bring: Prepared binding. Finished quilt top is 47x63 inches which would equal 220 inches (6.1 yards long) all the way around so plan accordingly. We recommend adding to this measurement so you can finish the binding, 6.5 yards of binding will do. Basic sewing supplies: sewing machine in good working condition, thread, cutting mat, ruler, scissors, etc. AND a good competitive spirit for the challenge!!
Registration fee: $20 per person (not per team but per person)
Prizes: 1st place (the team who completes the quilt first): $90 voucher for each team member to be used at vendors at the quilt show
2nd place: $50 voucher for each team member to be used at vendors at the quilt show
3rd place: $35 voucher for each team member to be used at vendors at the quilt show
All other participants receive 3 fat quarters for your participation!
The quilts will all be donated to a veterans organization.
