Author Thom Hartmann accurately refers to fossil fuels as ancient sunlight. In effect, we are running our society off battery power, since fossil fuels are not being replaced at a rate remotely close to the rate that we are consuming them. Many scientists are concerned about the effect on the climate of returning vast quantities of sequestered buried carbon back into the atmosphere, in the form of CO2, in a fairly short time period.
