JUNE

Completed the Kids Reading Events for approximately 78 students and faculty at Pevely Summer School for the first grade classes. This goes even further if you include the families of these individuals. Each classroom received the book so they can continue reading it when they learn about money. The children wrote some of the following items when asking what they are saving their money for: giving to the poor, important stuff for when I am older, clothes, phones, vacations, school supplies and food. Everyone enjoyed the program and the teachers hope I teach the class again in the fall.

Hosted a UMC Making Money Count Series along with State Specialists Andrew Zumwalt and Graham McCaulley on 6/22/17 & 6/29/17. We received a review on Facebook for the class: “I am currently attending one of these workshops. The church I serve frequently hosts workshops that offer education for the betterment of life...we hope to offer practical educational opportunities to those who are in need of information and believe they have nowhere else to find it. This workshop certainly qualifies. The Missouri Extension Program has utilized this philosophy of practicality and availability of education for years, and those qualities are its genuine hallmark as an organization. This workshop is an example of that. We found valuable information in this particular workshop, both for ourselves personally as a clergy family, and for those in our broader community who can benefit. It is offered with patient answers to practical financial questions and many references to further information are offered. I hope others find their way to take the course and then share it. It is truly a gift.”

Partnered with Next Step for Life Inc., Employment Services to host a Tackling the Tough Skills class on Responsibility and Communication in the Workplace. I received this via e-mail, “Thank you again for being our guest speaker today! It was very informative, and I think everyone learned a lot! You are AWESOME!”

Working on the class How to Get an A in Retirement. I hope to offer it in 2018. Offered a High School Financial Planning two-class series in Ste. Genevieve County. Offered a Making Money Count two-class series in Ste. Genevieve County. Offered SkillUP Programming for Job Skills, Budgeting, and Take Control of Your Finances in Jefferson, St. Francois County, and

Franklin County. We had a participant come in for a Making Money Count session as part of the Jefferson County program. Held a Budget Committee Meeting on 6/19/17. I had my performance evaluation at the St. Louis City office on 6/21/17 along with an HES Update at the St. Louis City office on

6/26/17. Participated in the Matter of Balance coach update. Kathy, Eileen and I hosted visits for Mark Stewart, Director of Off-Campus Operations for Extension and Engagement, Jody

Squires, Associate Regional Director, Urban Region, and Susan Mills-Gray Extension State Specialist & Professor, HES on 6/15/17.

JULY

In May, I started posting various financial topics on Facebook for Millennials, Retirement, High School Students, and Estate Planning. Through July 11, there were approximately 16 posts with total reaches of 1,834. I also posted information about the Pevely Elementary class that reached 511. Feel free to like our page and share the posts if you think it can help people in the community. These numbers will be included in the office stats.

Held Your Money Your Goals class at Jefferson Franklin Community Action Corporation to train their Housing, Community

Services, and Energy Assistance Staff on budgeting, credit, goal setting, identity theft, etc. They really enjoyed learning their “Money Habitudes,” along with Your Money Your Goals and felt it would help them assist their clients better.

Presented at the Twin City Optimist Meeting on 7/20/17 to approximately 30 of their members. One of the member said the

presentation was a wealth of knowledge and they had no idea that the Extension Office did so many things. Another mentioned that the programs have been very helpful to the youth that she works with at the Career Center.

Offered SkillUP in Arnold and at the Washington Career Center in Franklin County. One of the participants mentioned she

learned skills such as what to do on an interview and how to develop a resume. A quote was, “I like that we can talk about sharing information that will help me and my family. Thank you.”

Held the Audit Committee Meeting on 7/18/17. Observed the conference judging for 4-H in Arnold and was a judge for the Home Economics portion of the fair. Finished the How to Get an A in Retirement Class.

4-H Youth Development – Melissa Scheer and Kristine Howze with 170 4-H members and 63 Volunteers registered in 16 4-H Clubs for the 2016-17 year so far.

State 4-H Congress (5/31-6/2), Jacob and Rebecca Althoff and Jaden Mocumbi participated in this three-day conference attending workshops, participating in the legislative process and experiencing life on the MU Campus. I served as an advisor to the youth, worked with the youth leaders to facilitate the regional meetings, worked with Tommy Thomas to implement a tour of the MU Athletic Training Center and provided transportation home from the conference for 2 of the youth.

I attended the MU Extension Food Quality Assurance program (6/5) led by Kendra Graham, livestock specialist, during the regular meeting of the Pro-Farmers 4-H Club. Twelve (12) 4-H Members and 5 non-members from the community attended the workshop. Youth learned about safe animal handling, feed mix and medicated feed, medicine injections and other food safety information.

4-H Extension Council Committee Meeting (6/6) – A huge thank you to the committee for meeting to help us find elected officials to serve as fair judges, begin planning for a 4-H Trivia Night and volunteering at the fair.

Shooting Sports Meeting (6/10) – I was able to use my training as a 4-H archery instructor at the annual Shooting Sports Picnic Presentation of Boeing Donation Check to Dreamcatcher’s 4-H Club (6/11) - Ike Schevers, a volunteer with the Dreamcatcher’s 4-

H Club works for Boeing. Boeing matches employee’s volunteer hours with a financial contribution. With the Missouri 4-H Foundation we were able to help the Dreamcatcher’s club receive a check for over $700!

4-H Camp (6/12-15) was a great event with nearly 100 youth from Jefferson, St. Charles and St. Louis Counties at Camp Mo-Val. I took the lead on crafts, cabin and group assignments, and working with the volunteer nurse (Thank you Jessica Mayer!). 19 Jefferson County youth worked together, practiced independent living, tried Archery, created their own colored bath paint, learned about the sun and wildlife, and designed and built miniature robots that would cultivate fields in the Ag-Innovators workshop.

Youth Futures Program Training (6/21) – at a staff meeting we learned to use the SurfacePro computer tablets and about how story telling can help youth express themselves and define their plans. Now Youth can make their own movies.

Kristine and I met with staff and the superintendent from Dunklin School District (6/19, 7/25) to begin planning for a Youth Futures club at Dunklin for 2017-18 and other possible 4-H partnerships in future years.

I met with Kim Groom, 6th Grade Teacher at Windsor Middle (6/22). She is planning to use the free 4-H resources that are available on-line to teach students in her leadership class public speaking and decision-making.

4-H Council Meetings (6/22 and 7/27) Each month youth officers and youth and adult representatives discuss and evaluate county 4-H business. I was unable to attend the July 4-H Council Meeting because of illness, the youth and volunteers met without me. Agenda items in June and July included: Fair, Trivia Night, Village of Jefferson Night Out, Annual Banquet, and National Youth Science Day.

4-H Fair Exhibit Judging, 7/12 in Arnold and 7/17 in Hillsboro – Thank you to the judges who interviewed 40 youth about their 104 items (up from 33 youth and 98 items last year). Seven youth brought rabbits, goats, or chickens to the small animal contest. Youth from the community could see the animals at Kids Day on Sunday. This year judges included: Arnold City Councilman EJ Fleischman, County Council Chair Renee Reuter, State Representative John McCaherty, State Representative Becky Ruth, Judge Dianna Bartels, Circuit Clerk Michael Reuter, Judge Wes Yates, Lewis Roop and Tori Orton. Volunteers helping included Sharon Knickmeyer and Pia Broccard. Thanks to Stephanie Cunningham for helping in Arnold.

Youth Futures College Within Reach Conference (Kristine 7/17-20, Melissa 7 /18-20) We had 5 Jefferson County 4-H Members attend the Youth Futures College with-in reach conference. Participants took a practice ACT, had mock-college interviews, heard about careers and college majors, talked to college advisors about their individual goals, made videos about Youth Futures, danced, lived in the dorms and experienced college life at MU. Students even met UM President Mun Choi and LU Interim President Michael Middleton.

I visited with 4-H families with Cattle and Swine in the Jefferson County Cattleman Livestock Show and Auction (7/21, 22). Four 4-H members had only steer, 6 members had hogs, and 3 members had both at the show and auction. Youth in these animal projects learn responsibility, persistence, financial management, and time management in addition to animal husbandry.

Kids Day Games (7/23) about 75 children visiting the fair joined 4-H volunteers to play games, eat watermelon, throw water balloons and learn about the solar eclipse on Sunday during Kids Day Games. Two state 4-H Council members from our region came to help at the event. Thanks to the volunteers who worked it including the Crosby, Ritter, Broccard-Dietz, Huskey and Althoff families. (see photo)

Lego and Robotics Activities with the Festus YMCA Camp (7/26) Kristine, youth volunteers and I led Robotics activities for 78 youth ages 5-12. Activities built skills around problem solving, planning, communication, teamwork, and the scientific process.

I met with Shelly Crader, librarian at Sunrise School, to plan a 4-H Afterschool Program (7/26) for the 2017-18 year.

I took vacation 7/4- 7/7 and 6/23 (half day). I took a personal day due to illness 7/27 (half day).
