At the beginning of 2011, I asked for us toconsider the Jefferson Chamber’s “Value
Proposition.” What value does the Chamberoffer to its members? What impact does theChamber have on businesses small andlarge? What resources and benefits does theChamber offer exclusively to members tobetter their bottom‐line?
We all want the best value for our money.Value is a combination of three things: theprice, the quality and the benefits. The cus‐tomer always purchases what he or shebelieves has the best value for the money. The same can be said for the value chambersprovide to its members.
Advocates of chambers of commerce havelong believed that when a company is activein its local chamber, it is doing the right thingnot only for the community but for its ownsuccess. While there is plenty of evidence toshow the value of chambers of commerce intheir communities, it is much harder to finddata quantifying the value of belonging to achamber.
A recent study commissioned by theAmerican Chamber of Commerce Executiveswith support from Small Business Network,Inc., set out to determine the real value tocompanies in terms of consumer outcomes ofjoining and being active in their local cham‐ber of commerce.
Their scientific web‐based survey of 2,000participants provided the following results:
• Most consumers (59%) think that beingactive in the local chamber of commerce isan effective business strategy overall. It is29% more effective, however, for commu‐nicating to consumers that a company usesgood business practices and 26% moreeffective for communicating that a businessis reputable.
• If a company shows that it is highly involvedin its local chamber (e.g., sits on the cham‐ber board), consumers are 12% more likelyto think that its products stack up betteragainst its competition.
• When a consumer thinks that a company’sproducts stack up better against the compe‐tition because the company is highlyinvolved in its local chamber of commerce,it is because he or she infers that the com‐pany is trustworthy, involved in the com‐munity, and is an industry leader.
• When consumers know that a restaurantfranchise is a member of the chamber ofcommerce, they are 40% more likely to eatat the franchise in the next few months.
• When consumers know that a small busi‐ness is a member of the chamber of com‐merce, they are 44% more likely to thinkfavorably of it and 63% more likely to pur‐chase goods or services from the companyin the future.
The results show that being active inchambers like the Jefferson Chamber is agood strategy for businesses to use.Statistically, it is an effective way to convey toconsumers that a company uses good busi‐
ness practices, is involved in the community, cares about customers, and is reputable.
The Jefferson Chamber of Commerce isactively advocating for businesses and is aconstant force for investment in JeffersonParish’s quality of life. Daily, the JeffersonChamber delivers results to the communityby leading in the promotion of progress andgrowth, advocating for the interests of busi‐ness, and by providing services and opportu‐nities that help its members grow.
Last year, I encouraged everyone tocommit their precious time, get engaged, step up the involvement and become a partof something really special. I believe weaccomplished our goals and set the pace fora great year in 2012. I am proud to have leda great board of dedicated, passionate andtalented people. My thanks to those compa‐nies and individuals who actively supportthe Jefferson Chamber by sponsoring ourprograms, participating in our functions, attending our events, and getting involvedas members.
Congratulations on a great year! We havea phenomenal organization and I ask you tocontinue to stay connected, engaged anddemonstrate the value this Chamber pro‐vides for the betterment of Jefferson Parishand the region.
