It is best to do the initial installation in warmer temperatures (70+ degrees). This will allow the stretch and set fabric to do its thing.

1. Remove factory top and hardware if applicable. Install windshield header bar as per included Smittybilt instructions.

2. If you have metal belt rail flanges from another soft top installed on your YJ you will need to remove them and install the ones provided. Our metal flanges have 1 hole pre-stamped into one end. This metal flange will be installed with the hole at the forward end of the tub and installed in conjunction with the lower door surround mounting bracket. Three other holes need to be drilled at approximately equal distances along the tub rails with the last hole near the rear end for the eye-bolt placement (see photo). If you already have adequate holes, mark the metal flange and drill 5/16" holes and install flush to the inside edge of the tub rails. The front hole uses a bolt and wing nut underneath (NOTE: leave this bolt slightly loose for now), holes 2 and 3 get bolts, washers and nuts underneath and hole 4 gets the eye-bolt (see photo). You may need to remove the plastic end-cap from the lower door surround to insert the bolt then reinstall the cap.

3. When installing the door surrounds you will need to have them held in the proper location while installing. They require 2 self-drilling screws in the roll bar on each side. The lower attachment point should already be loosely installed from Step 2. From inside the Jeep, close the doors against the door surrounds. You should now be working from inside the Jeep. Make sure that you have adequate clearance all around the door frame and the doors weather seal is mating up with the surround. Now mark and slit the roll bar padding (if applicable) then drill the self drilling screws into the roll bar. Important: The brackets are now slotted, rather than having two holes (see photo) This allows for some adjustability. Try to drill the screws straight up into the roll bar from below. Keep in mind that pressure against the door seal is important. You can now exit the Jeep, and tighten down the bolt securing the bottom of the door surround.

4. Unfold the main canopy. Drape the canopy up and over the roll bars and windshield header. Slip the plastic leading edge strip into the slot on the windshield header bar while keeping rearward tension. Check from side to side to ensure that canopy is centered at the front and at the rear. Now, from the rear, attach the rear tension straps to the eyebolts. Tightly secure and center the canopy in place with the webbing straps. Important: This is a good time to make sure that the plastic strip has remained secure in the windshield header. This is the first time that the main canopy will be under tension and it will stretch out slightly. Give it a few minutes and then tighten the straps a little more.

5. Now feed the triangular flaps around and under the doors surrounds and then up and over the roll bars. Attach the adjustable webbing strap to both sides and pull until tight and centered. The bound edges of the canopy should sit just on the upper / outer edge of the door surround. Again, some stretching may occur side to side. You can now attach the center canopy flap strap around the back of the roll bar, and then forward to the metal loop at the front of the jeep, at the center above the windshield. Feed it through the ladder lock and snug it down.

6. Side Windows Raise the main canopy outermost flaps to access the zippers. Zip the side windows into place. Note. The zippers on the canopy are attached with 1 1/2" industrial velcro which can be moved up, down, forward and rearward slightly to adjust tension. We try to have them in the correct position when they leave the factory but small adjustments may be necessary for the initial installation. If the panel is too far forward or rearward move the zipper accordingly. Pull down on the panel and attach the plastic strip into the belt rail on the Jeep. Once you have found the best position for the zippers you should not have to adjust them again unless you need to for extreme temperature changes. If the main canopy is not centered one side may seem a little tighter than the other.

7. Rear Window Once the sides are installed you can install the rear window panel the same way as the sides. Raise the flap to access the rear zipper. Attach the remaining zippers to connect the rear to the sides. Leave the rear corners of the side panels unattached until the end. You may have to adjust the zipper location slightly, as you did with the sides.

8. Now you can insert the foam covered retainer bar into the sleeve on the lower portion of the rear window panel.

9. Install the rear bar retainer parts as per the picture to the right.

Using the rear bar retainer parts as a template. Mark and drill the 2- 3/16" holes. The first hole is 1-1/4" from the inner edge of the door opening and 1 inch up from the lower angled surface. See photo.Once drilled, install the retainer parts with the # 12 panhead screws. Install each screw with 2 washers between the parts and the vehicle to allow space for the plastic strips on the rear window panel. Note. If you had a factory soft top you may already have the smaller holes at these locations. Re-use or resize and use these holes.

10. Pulling down slightly on the rear panel, hook the retainer bar onto the retainer parts and insert the plastic strips into the slots underneath. If there is not enough upward tension you can raise the rear panel zipper on the velcro slightly. Close the zippers and you are finished.

Important Note: We have found that some Jeeps with the factory doors experience water leakage around the doors while others do not. It is probably because some doors have experienced interference while being closed at some point in time or that the weather seal around the doors is a little tired. Another possible reason is that not all sportbars were installed exactly the same at the factory. If you experience water leakage above the doors you may have to loosen the door surround bolts, and then apply outward force as you tighten them back up. This will apply more outward pressure to the door seal. If there is still leakage, washers may be installed in between the door surround and the "L" shaped mounting brackets to place the door surrounds even further out. If water still persists to enter we can supply you with a length of 1 inch sticky-back weather seal that can be applied to the top outside 24 inches of the door surround.

Warranty We warrant our Jeep Wrangler Softoppers to be free from defects in material and workmanship for a period of one year, with the exception of vinyl windows and zippers, provided there has been normal use and proper maintenance.

Vinyl Windows are warranted for a period of 3 months from the date of purchase.

Zippers are guaranteed to be in perfect working condition when leaving the factory. Due to atmospheric conditions, dirt, sand, road grime, dust, and abrasive cleaners, etc., zippers are warranted for a period of 6 months from the date of purchase.

Important: Rolling up or folding the windows when the temperature is below 40 degrees is asking for trouble. This will void the warranty on the windows, as clear vinyl plastic can crack very easily at these temperatures.

Returns must be pre-approved and have Softoppers issued RGA number attached. Any defective items must be returned with proof of purchase to Softopper 4750 Nautilus Ct South, Unit B Boulder CO 80301, freight pre-paid. Items returned must be carefully packed, in clean condition, with plastic windows protected from scratching and creasing. This warranty does not cover damage resulting from abuse, misuse, alteration, accident or damage in transit. Softoppers obligations under this warranty are limited to the aforementioned repair or replacement of warranty defects for which return authorization has been received during the warranty period, and Softopper SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES ARISING FROM BREACH OF THIS OR ANY IMPLIED WARRANTY. This warranty applies to the original purchaser only. All remedies under this warranty are limited to repair or replacement of any item or items found to be defective by the factory within the time period specified.

Softopper Care and Maintenance

Your top is made of the finest materials available. To keep it looking new and for product longevity and durability, it will need periodic cleaning and maintenance.

Washing: The fabric should be washed from time to time using a mild soap and warm water. Be sure to rinse all soap off the top when washing is complete.

Vinyl Windows: Windows should be kept clean to avoid scratching. Wash with a water-soaked sponge or cloth and a mild dishwashing detergent. Do not use a coarse brush on the windows and never wipe the windows when they are dry. Do not use cleaners that contain silicone or alcohol.

Cold weather: As with all automotive and marine clear vinyls, extreme care must be taken when rolling up or folding in cold temperatures. This point cannot be stressed enough! Clear vinyl becomes stiff in cold temperatures and may crack.

Zippers: Keeping the zippers clean and lubricated with a silicone lubricant will help prevent damage and keep the zippers in smooth working condition.

Leakage: As with any sewn automotive top there is always a slight risk of leakage. Right out of the box the Softopper will not be waterproof. Water seeping through at the seams may be stopped by applying Seam Sure (supplied), on the inside of the affected seams. Shake Seam Sure well and apply liberally to the inside seams concentrating on areas where needle and thread penetrated the fabric.
