“LIVING WELL WITH T1D” SYMPOSIUM

heila and Bill Matthews’ son, Will, was diagnosed with T1D on July 15,2010 at the age of 6. Like many newly diagnosed families, the Matthewsfamily was introduced to JDRF through the Bag of Hope Program. Sincethat first meeting with one of our volunteer mentors, the family has

become involved across all JDRF programs. Bill serves on the Board of the JDRFNew England Chapter, Sheila has become a Bag of Hope volunteer herself, and thefamily has successfully fundraised for JDRF through the Boston Walk to CureDiabetes and through the Third Party Events Program. We thank Sheila and Bill, andtheir family, for engaging with JDRF and for their extraordinary efforts in helping toadvance diabetes research for Will and all those living with T1D. Their story: “We still recall vividly nearly every minute of those post‐diagnosis days we spent atthe hospital, and the early days, weeks and months that were filled with shock, sadness and feeling overwhelmed. Later, we realized we were not alone and ourstories of chasing Will for finger pricks or insulin injections and his other attempts atdesperately trying to control a situation that he really could not, was normalbehavior for a newly diagnosed child. We adjusted to our ‘new normal’ but ourlives were forever changed that day. As we reflect back on the first year of Will’s lifeas a child with T1D, however, we don’t only see pain and heartache; we seeinspiration, courage, friendship and hope. We have drawn unending inspirationfrom Will’s continuous resiliency, courage and maturity. He has refused to let hisdiagnosis affect what he does or who he is, and he has truly become our hero.

practical programs to T1D families and to uplift our T1D families with the amazing progress we are making with ourJDRF dollars.

What do you see as JDRF’s greatest challenges moving forward? Convincing those not connected to T1D that the research must go on…lives of those with T1D have improved so dramaticallyover the past 20 years but it is not enough. The physical and emotional burden placed on those with T1D and theircaregivers is an unfortunate obstacle in the pursuit of one’s dreams. The economic burden of T1D has a substantial impacton the delivery of health care. Better devices, diagnostics, preventative measures, and the cure of T1D are all must haves.

Why have you chosen to devote your time to JDRF? I am surely not the only one to put it this way, but for me JDRF is a family of families. JDRF has the grassroots feel but withthe infrastructure to make it all work. Its mission is near and dear to my heart.

he Special Diabetes Program (SDP) has led to groundbreaking discoveries and new treatments that are improving the livesof people with diabetes and demonstrating a strong return on the federal investment. SDP‐funded research opportunitiesthat are being explored now and others on the horizon show great promise in relieving the growing burden on our nation’seconomy and the millions of Americans affected by diabetes and other diseases that benefit from SDP’s work.

Congress and the Administration created and enacted the SDP in 1997 to address the growing burden of diabetes and theunfunded opportunities in diabetes research, treatment and prevention. The program has strong, bipartisan support. Lastrenewed in 2010, the SDP is funded currently at $150 million per year through FY13 for each of its two parts: T1D research anddiabetes treatment and prevention for Native Americans and Alaska Natives. The program must be renewed this year to continuelarge‐scale interventional and observational clinical trials, proactively plan next steps to maximize research opportunities and mosteffectively allocate research dollars.

For example, after Ryan’s diagnosis with T1D in 2002 at the age of 8, his fatherScott enrolled in a study for relatives of people with T1D. Scott tested positive forT1D antibodies and enrolled in another SDP‐funded study to test a drug calledrituximab (anti‐CD20) to see if it would slow the disease’s progression. Today,Scott has T1D but is only in need of small doses of insulin to control his diabetes. In addition, he doesn’t have high and low blood sugar levels like others with T1D.

Advancements like this are thanks to the combination of federal diabetes researchfunding and JDRF private investment—one of the world’s most effective public‐privatepartnerships focused on curing a disease. The renewal of the SDP will capitalize onthese investments and help us achieve our mutual goal of better treatments and a cure.

As of May 2012, 72 Senators and 271 House members signed SDP support letterscirculated by Senate and House Diabetes Caucus Co‐Chairs Sens. Jeanne Shaheen(D‐NH) and Susan Collins (R‐ME), and Reps. Ed Whitfield (R‐KY) and Diana DeGette(D‐CO). Thanks to these leaders, JDRF Advocates, and stalwart friends of the T1Dcommunity, the SDP renewal campaign is off to a strong start.

TSPECIAL DIABETES PROGRAM

At the same time, diabetes has given Will valuable andinspiring role models, and the insight, focus and maturity tobegin to understand that diabetes should not get in the way ofliving a normal life and accomplishingdreams. In particular, Will has drawnimportant inspiration from others withT1D, including his ‘friend’ Tommy, theathletic college student who deliveredWill’s Bag of Hope, and Tommy’s sister,Maggie, who both have T1D. In additionto Will, our whole family has alsodeveloped close friendships with otherindividuals, parents, and families whoshare the T1D experience. We lean heavily on these peopleand share a kinship and life experience that only those who docan understand. Finally, we have become dogged about improving the day‐to‐day life of our son and, most importantly, finding a cure. These fundraising efforts—the JDRF Walk as ‘Will’s Warriors,’lemonade stands, yoga events, adult hockey tournaments—have been a great source of satisfaction. We are incredibly

grateful to our friends and community who have supported ourfamily and our efforts in reaching our goals. So while wecontinue to fight for a cure that we so badly need, and always

find ourselves wishing that diabetes didnot exist, we are touched and inspiredby the many people who also battle thisdisease daily, and especially our heroWill.” JDRF is committed to providingmeaningful social, emotional, andpractical support and information aboutT1D, diabetes research, and how best to

manage and cope with the disease during each new phase oflife. JDRF research is focused on improving the lives of people with T1D today and in the future. Many of theimportant advances are being made right here in our own backyard. In FY11, 20% of JDRF’s U.S. portfolio—totaling $13.8 million—came back to Massachusetts, making it the #1 JDRF research‐funded state.

Current and active JDRF‐funded research sites in Massachusetts include:
