1 Harder to find cheap/decent places that allow dogs. 3/17/2020 10:43 AM

2 Did not impact my housing selectiona as most apartments allow cats. 3/17/2020 10:16 AM

3 I was lucky to rent an apartment that was extremely pet friendly, so when we got our petnothing needed to change.

3/16/2020 9:26 PM

4 My apartment doesn't know I have a cat, so it doesn't really affect it. They allow cats but it is a$500 plus pet rent of $25/month.

3/16/2020 8:24 PM

5 More difficult to find dog friendly housing. 3/16/2020 4:51 PM

7 Several buildings downtown have breed restrictions. I have a pit mix so it made it harder. Forthat reason, my husband and I moved into his family house for now while we look for theperfect spot for us.

3/16/2020 1:54 PM

8 I have a dog, and most places require you to pay extra for a pet such as a dog or cat, if theyallow them in the first place.

3/16/2020 1:51 PM

9 Most Minneapolis apartments allow dogs, sometimes with breed/size/weight restrictions. If youhave a dog, just be prepared to pay an extra pet deposit and possible an extra "pet rent"monthly.

# RESPONSES DATE

1 Weigh the pros and cons of what you want out of a housing situation. If you want to pay less byliving further away, think about the parking pass, the commute etc. Also, paying more for peaceand security is worth it.

3/19/2020 12:21 PM

2 Make sure you find a living situation where you will be happy. I have learned that I am NOT acity person. I'm moving to the suburbs and commuting next year.

3/17/2020 3:08 PM

3 Find somewhere that fits most of your needs; the last thing you need is to come home to astressful situation after a long day of being a law student. If you want to find a happy mediumbetween being "downtown" and finding a cheaper place to live, I would highly recommendsearching near the U of M campus (East Bank) and Prospect Park/Marcy-Holmes area. It hasbeen wonderful living here the past three years and has been way cheaper than if I had liveddowntown. Plus, you can save more money by taking public transit (trains/buses) since they areprevalent in the area.

3/17/2020 10:43 AM

4 Pick what is important to you. My apartment comes with a lot of amenities that I do not use, sotechnically I am wasting money on those things. However, my apartment is also walkingdistance to school which I love and I have a business center with free printing. Those perksmake up the heightened cost in my mind.

3/16/2020 9:26 PM

5 ApartmentList.com is the best website for looking at apartments, it's Tinder for housing and it isamazing. Look at the crime rate in areas you're considering (it's just the smart thing to domoving in a big city) Ask how expensive laundry is Ask for deals on rent, they'll give you amonth off sometimes Suburbs are your friends Being close to grocery stores, target, etc. ismore convenient than you realize Counterspace is overlooked often, don't do that

3/16/2020 8:24 PM

6 I enjoyed living outside the metro, but you need to know what works best for you. Especiallywhen it comes to commuting during the winter.

3/16/2020 4:51 PM

7 Living downtown is convenient but you will pay a higher price, if you are able to commute St.Paul is a great option for lower rent.

3/16/2020 4:41 PM

8 Take your time searching, but when something comes up that you like, jump on it immediately.Apartments come and go very quickly in this market. You don’t have to live downtown or inLoring Park to be close to school, if cost is concerning to you, venture into mid town ofMinneapolis or South Minneapolis. There are a lot of reasonably priced neighbors in thoseareas.

3/16/2020 2:31 PM

9 Live with another law student or family if possible. Other young people not in law school willdistract you. Unless you’re super motivated you will feel FOMO and potentially neglect studyingto feel like you’re not missing out. Spouse or S/O is good too (as long as it’s a healthyrelationship) because they’ll support you. Con to that is if you break up then you have to dealwith moving mid semester.

3/16/2020 2:26 PM

10 Find a place where you can study. Even though I prefer studying at the library, there will betimes when you won’t be able to. Making sure that you live somewhere where you can havepeace and quiet to be productive is what matters most to me. Living close to campus can makethings easier but a longer commute should not be a problem if you can be productiveelsewhere.

3/16/2020 1:54 PM

11 Definitely prioritize what you want to spend money and time on. Living close will likely costmore on base rent, but you'll save money on transportation (particularly if you forgo having acar altogether - you'll save on parking, gas, maintenance, etc). You'll also save time by beingable to walk to school and avoid the headaches of traffic and Minnesota winter driving.

3/16/2020 1:51 PM

12 Have a place that you can go away from the law school. Preferably on a bus line. 3/16/2020 1:42 PM

13 I have a handful of friends who moved here to attend UST Law, and they live in downtownMPLS because they are afraid of driving in the cities. If that is something you are concernedabout partaking in, live downtown! Uptown doesn't have a lot of parking (street or driveway/lot)in general, Northeast usually has a good amount of free street parking and a lot of housesinstead of apartments. If you don't mind driving a bit, a typical commute in to school fromaround 3 miles away is about 15 minutes in any direction.

3/16/2020 1:41 PM

fun neighborhoods with very similar amenities within commuting distance that will offer muchmore reasonable rent/prices.

15 living downtown minneapolis is worth it for the first year, it reduces a lot of stress overcommuting time and being able to walk to the library vs. waste time trying to coordinatetransportation. it’s also worth it to live downtown and be fully immersed in all the first year hasto offer!

16 If you want cheaper housing be prepared to commute usong a bus pass or parking pass. Livingin Loring park is nice because if you want a cheaper studio (and want to live alone) there areoptions. But if you're looking for more upscale places then there's plenty. The Biggest pro ishow close my apartment is to campus and the biggest con is the price (but it's pretty cheap fordowntown living) I would recommend talking to a current student to see if they're moving or theadmissions office to get on their list for roommates.

17 Living in St Paul is MUCH less expensive than downtown. The shuttle makes life super easy forthose of us who don’t like to drive (especially in snow). I found my apartment onapartments.com search.

18 If you want to live downtown prepare for high rent and a slight homeless problem during thesummer. I still recommend it

3/9/2020 1:28 PM

19 Suburbs are farther away and you have to pay for parking, gas, etc. but the rent is usually muchcheaper. I love Anoka

3/9/2020 1:15 PM

20 Look for public transit. 3/9/2020 1:12 PM

21 It is easy to go outside of your budget for monthly rent the closer you get to the school, so don'tdiscount living farther away and taking the bus/driving. Additionally, living alone is a greatoption. While it can be lonely and an adjustment, being a student means odd hours andstressful time, so having a place that is your own is important.

22 Do thorough research and find the location that works best for you. Always take commuting intoaccount, especially with winter months in-mind. Laurel Village is safe and close to the LawSchool. Great Community. But is not cheap.

3/3/2020 9:18 AM

23 Be open to commuting! Living costs are a little lower and it really is nice to have a separationbetween campus and home.

3/3/2020 8:55 AM

24 Consider what you want your transportation methods and limitations to be before figuring outwhere to live. If you don’t want to drive, I suggest living downtown

3/2/2020 10:25 PM

25 It is extremely nice to live just a couple of blocks from school. 3/2/2020 12:12 PM

26 Talk to the school, some housing offers discounts for students, find a roomate, plan on signinga year long lease, don’t feel you need to sign a lease way ahead of time. You are totally fine tobegin your search 60-90 days before your planned November in day.

27 i would consider living downtown or close by the law school if you are looking at apartmentsthat cost more because then you are within walking distance and won't have to pay for schoolparking or public transit. If you don't want to live downtown Northeast or Uptown are close andcheaper if you can get a house with a roommate or 3.

1 I wish CORT had provided some more cheaper options rather than "luxury" apartments in thedowntown area. Some people cannot afford $1000+ apartments.

2 Not particularly 3/16/2020 8:24 PM

3 Finding a law student roommate. 3/16/2020 4:51 PM

4 The Excel spreadsheet of all 1L students looking for roommates was nice and I hope itcontinues to be available for incoming students.

3/16/2020 2:26 PM

5 I live with my partner, but maybe for others it would be helpful to have a roommate board?Quite a few of my friends met their roommate at admitted students weekend, and perhapsfacilitating that would be helpful.

3/16/2020 1:51 PM

6 it would be helpful to have a link with more information overall (the surveys are difficult to find) 3/9/2020 3:44 PM

7 It would be nice to have a list of places to search for. But also talking to older students abouttheir housing experiences.
