2014 Scholarships

Each year we award scholarships from private donors ranging from $500

to $1,500. These scholarships are awarded to High School Seniors (and

one Junior) living in Yonkers who represent the diversity of our city. This

year 17 scholarships totaling $12,600 are being presented to recognize

outstanding achievements in a variety of areas including music,

performing arts, community service, entrepreneurship, and academic

excellence. One scholarship is also awarded to a student with special

learning needs.

Message From The Executive Director and Senior Director

For the past 95 years, JCY-Westchester Community Partners (JCY-WCP) has been at the forefront of community life. This year JCY-WCP chose a new strategic path, one that will strengthen and enhance its effect on the community. JCY-WCP and Family Service Society of Yonkers (FSSY), a well-respected agency whose mission complements JCY-WCP’s have worked well together over the years. We came together to build on the synergistic effect of our organizational strengths with the goal of having a greater impact.

From our beginnings in Yonkers, JCY-WCP has expanded throughout Westchester County: JCY-WCP fulfills its mission: To enhance the educational experience of children in Westchester County through effective learning initiatives and the engagement of volunteer mentors with a wonderful professional staff and over 650 dedicated volunteers. We are proud to say that JCY serves over 7,000 children and families annually.

For the past 16 years, JCY-WCP has been celebrating education in Yonkers with a scholarship program and brunch. It is with great pleasure that we acknowledge the lifelong achievements of three Jewish Educators who have devoted their lives to educating our youth and recognize the achievements of 17 very deserving individuals. We congratulate those who through their hard work and achievement have a bright and exciting future ahead of them as they embark on a path of continued learning.

JCY-WCP makes a difference in the educational experience of hundreds of students each year. Whether through mentors bringing their love of reading, experiences, and compassion to a struggling child, bringing Holocaust education to the children of Westchester County, or supporting and educating the parents on the importance of education, our goal is always to break down barriers, improve our children’s future, and enrich the lives of thousands in our community. This year we began a tutoring program targeting displaced students in Yonkers and our Intro2America, where the needs of newly arrived immigrants are addressed, has resulted in a second ESL site at Lincoln High School thanks to a three year grant from New York Life Foundation. Intro2America is already a respected program along with; SMART, Open Book, Holocaust Remembrance Program, Summer Reading Buddies, and Reading Buddies After School.

JCY –WCP is Westchester’s leader in Intergenerational Volunteer Literacy Programming and spearheads Westchester’s IG Collaborative/Westchester Chapter of NYSIgN (New York State Intergenerational Network) giving it a prominent role in the Westchester. Join us on September 20, 2014 11-2 at the Greenburg Library as Westchester County celebrates the impact and benefit of Intergenerational Programs; InterGen Fest; connecting all ages.

We thank our Board of Directors and all who have worked in and supported our programs. We are dedicated to serving and strengthening Yonkers and other communities across Westchester for people of all ages. We would like to thank our Scholarship Committee under the leadership of Eric Schoen, Marla Hurban, Director of Intergenerational Programs, and the staff for their efforts to make this day successful. We also thank all of the educators who have made a difference in the lives of their students.

About Our Scholarship Winners!

Anna Shereff Community Service Scholarship in Memory of Louis H. Shereff has been awarded to Helaina Hurban. Helaina is a graduating senior at Yonkers High School. She intends

on majoring in Biomedical Engineering in College. Each summer Helaina spends many hours as a Reading Buddy but during the year she can be found tutoring other children in math. Helaina is the President of the Student Council, Secretary of the Bio Diversity Club, as well as

being involved in many community service projects in her school and the community.

Alfred Weissman Real Estate, LLC Community Service/Academic Scholarship winner is Lawrence Lee. Lawrence is a senior at Saunders Trades and Technical High School. After college he hopes to pursue a career in mechanical engineering. During his high school

years, he has consistently been involved with community service in his school as part of the Key Club as well as in the community.

Audrey Roshkind Scholarship for a Gorton High School Medical Magnet Student is

going to Modia Alexandre. Modia is a student in the Medical Magnet at Gorton High School. After college she is hoping for a career in neonatology. She has worked with children in the elementary grades. She has volunteered in the schools where she teaches the importance of

healthy eating and exercise, speaks at health fairs, and she also volunteers at the St. Joseph's Nursing Home.

Bernice E. Jutkowitz Performing Arts Scholarship has been awarded to Naomi Cameron. Naomi is a graduating senior at Palisade Preparatory School. She hopes to major in chemical

engineering in college. Throughout her school years she has performed in many different aspects of the arts both in front of the audience and behind the scenes. She is also a gold

medal poet. Florence Spotkov and Samuel Krinsky Community Service Scholarship was won by

Kevina Newton. Kevina attends the Early College High School. After college she wants a career in international business relations. Volunteering has become a part of her life; as a member of

Habitat for Humanity, Jr Achievement, Will Library, as well as mentoring and working at the Montessori Academy Special Olympics.

Gloria Fields and Andrew Seligson Music Scholarship winner is Samuel Ellman. Samuel Ellman will be graduating in June from Yonkers High School. He is still deciding what path to

follow in college but music has accompanied him on his journey. He plays percussion and jazz piano. We hope he will continue to use these gifts well.

J. David Jutkowitz Law Scholarship has been awarded to Nana-Ama Anane. Nana-Ama is a high school senior at Yonkers High School. She aspires to study public policy and administration

in college and eventually become a lawyer. She hopes to fight for justice in the nonprofit sector. Once achieving this goal she will put her sights on a seat on the Supreme Court.

The Lincoln High School Advanced Placement Art Award is going to Mayerling Soto. Mayerling is a graduating senior who attends Lincoln High School. Her goal is to have a career

in illustration. She credits the Advanced Placement program for bringing her creativity and imagination to a higher level and especially her art teacher, Mrs. Kass.

The Lincoln High School Junior Community Service Award winner is Alex Nunez. Alex is a junior at Lincoln High School and is interested in a career as a United States Marine. What better way to do community service! Right now he is a member of MCJROTC - Marine Corps

Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps.

The Lubin Memorial Business Scholarship has been awarded to Diane Ordonez Perez. Diane is a senior at Lincoln High School and is looking to pursue a career in biochemistry. She is a member of the Academy of Finance at Lincoln which has provided her with a solid

background in the business world. She hopes that one day her business acumen along with her passion for chemistry will allow her to start her own pharmaceutical company.

Patricia and Morris Kratz Memorial Scholarship recipient is Tala Azar. Tala is a Yonkers High School student hoping for a career in Chemical Engineering. She has learned to use her

artistic gifts as therapy using painting to help her release her stress. Art along with its connection with scientific inquiry are both important to her. Tala is the artist of the artwork on

the cover of this journal. Shelley Mayer and Lee Smith Law/Public Service Scholarship will go to Kadian Wright.

Kadian is a graduating senior at Saunders High School. After attending college where she wants to major in political science she hopes to have a career in law. Right now she is a part of the

mentoring program, Her Honor, and is working closely with a Westchester Family Court Judge. Sheryl Chasin Memorial Scholarship for a Student with Learning Disabilities will be

awarded to Jaciel Espinosa. Jaciel is a student at Gorton High School who is interested in studying mathematics and political science in college. He has a great deal of tenacity and it is

this trait which has allowed him to achieve success in all aspects of the curriculum. Tara Rosenblum Journalism Scholarship winner is Daniel Abramson. Daniel is a graduating

senior at Yonkers High School. He hopes to use his journalism skills and his love for sports to enter the world of sports journalism after college. His experiences in his high school have

influenced his career choice. Walshin Entrepreneurial Scholarship (Female) winner is Gladis Martinez. Gladis is a

senior at Riverside High School who is looking forward to a career in accounting after she majors in business administration with an emphasis in finance. Her experiences in the Network

for Teaching Entrepreneurship have helped her understand what business is all about and she definitely knows what she wants.

Walshin Entrepreneurial Scholarship (Male) will be awarded to Tamir Boddie. Tamir is a senior at the Early College High School. He hopes to go into a career in accounting. Tamir,

known his school as the "candy man" was responsible for starting a snack selling business. He looks forward to becoming a successful entrepreneur.

Yonkers Middle High School Young Writer’s Social Action Award winner is Serosh Naeem. Serosh is a graduating senior at Yonkers High School. She is interested in the field of

anthropology. Anthropology is the study of human culture and it is through this training that Serosh hopes to make a contribution to society.

Leader in Education Honoree Robin (Roberta) Berman

Robin Berman has been a high school social studies teacher in Yonkers since 1997. In addition to her teaching, Robin has been a diversity and 4MAT (a learning styles program) trainer and a

department representative. Ms. Berman is very proud of the community service opportunities she has brought to the

students at Roosevelt and Early College High Schools. As coordinator, her students have worked at Habitat for Humanity

work sites, fed and entertained the hungry at the Sharing Community in Getty

Square, and assisted at Special Olympics events.

Before becoming a teacher, Robin worked for almost 20 years in her family floor covering business. She held many positions over the years and is most proud of her ability to mentor young women to advance in their careers.

In addition to an advanced certificate of education from Pace University, Ms. Berman has an MS in Business from Columbia University, an MA in Psychology from the New School for Social Research and a BA in Political Science from Wheaton College. (MA)

Robin resides in Briarcliff Manor with her husband, Fred Strauss. She has a daughter Sybil Bayer who lives with her husband Jacob Bayer on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

Leader in Education Honoree Marnie Zolov

I began my teaching career with the Yonkers Public Schools in 1998, as a sixth grade teacher at Museum Middle School.

In 2006, I transferred to Yonkers Middle School, and in 2012, I accepted my current position as a sixth grade teacher at

Hostos Elementary School.

I received a Bachelor of Education degree from Oneonta State College, a Master of Science degree in Literacy Education from the College of New Rochelle, and a Masters

degree in School Building Leadership from Mercy College. I also have staff development and gifted and talented certifications.

My husband, Andrew Zolov, and I are the proud parents of Avery, age three.

I would like to thank my Principal, Ms. Elda Perez-Mejia from Hostos Elementary School and JCY-Westchester Community Partners for nominating me for this Leaders in Education Award.

Leader in Education Honoree

Debra Cantor

Debra Cantor went to nursery school and kindergarten in Yonkers before moving away and she didn't return until she began teaching

at Montessori 27 thirty five years later. In the interim, she was raised in Huntington New York, then began her college education in Israel

after graduating high school a year early, traveling in Europe and working and learning Hebrew on a kibbutz. She then returned to the

Tisch School of Arts at NYU and received a BFA.

After working for several years as an assistant director in film and theater, she bought a seat on the New York Futures Exchange and worked as a commodities trader for seven years. Ultimately working with Prudential Bache and other firms. During the Gulf War,

she worked for a Lebanese Oil company in Texas and then in London for a year as their lead oil trader. Returning to New York after the war, she continued to trade soybeans

and other commodities until ultimately she decided it was time to go back to school.

If she was going back to school, she decided that she would like to study education and use her second language acquisition skills. Ms. Cantor continued to work during the week

while studying at Adelphi University during the weekend and within six months was given a full time job teaching without a mentor in District 17, one of the toughest districts in

New York at the time, at the height of the crack epidemic in Brooklyn. It was sink or swim. Within four years, she was promoted to the head of ESL for District 6, one of the

largest ESL and bilingual districts in New York City. Debra completed a 2nd Masters in School Leadership and Supervision with Mercy college in a unique program where she

studied directly with the Superintendent and other District staff.

In the summer of 2000, Ms. Cantor was 40 years old and had a 12 month old son -- motherhood had started on the late side. She also had two job offers on the table -- one was to run the largest ESL district in the Bronx, where she was told she "would make a

tremendous difference on thousands of children" and the other was to teach in a small sweet Montessori school in Yonkers with a principal named Irene Jacobson. Obviously,

the rest is history. She taught at Montessori 27 for 11 years and including 1 year that was split with School 16. She is completing her 4th year at School 16 for a total of 14

years in the district. She has been involved with every aspect of testing imaginable including being a primary writer and editor of the NY State English as a Second Language

Exam and the new NYSITELL, and has been a District Scoring Leader for the NYSESLAT and the ELA as well as a Table Leader for Math. ELA, NYSESLAT and other exams. She

has helped Yonkers write curriculum for the Newcomers which is being implemented today, as well as Math and Social Studies curriculum and frameworks over the years.

Additionally, she has represented the district on numerous occasions in Albany, most recently as a Teacher Ambassador for the Core Curriculum. For the past four years, she

has actually done all of this as a single mother to two amazing sons who are currently in 6th and 9th grades.
