There is this thing to be said for team work. Actually there are a lot of things said about team work but there is one thing that remains no matter what team you are in. Commitment to the process. JCI London Deputy President Soraya Bowen dropped a message into the Annual Dinner Team WhatsApp group chat. It said,

“Our journey isn’t perfect but it’s ours … and I’ll stick with you ’til the end”

Now what Soraya won’t know until she reads this or somebody tells her, is that at precisely that moment she sent that message to our group chat, I was looking at an email she had sent and was think-ing “I wish she had spoken to me before she sent that email”. Now here’s is my point, I knew that even though I didn’t understand the circumstances that lead to the email she had sent, I trusted her. I would still need to ask her to help me understand her choice, but I trusted her. The reason why I trusted her is because since Soraya was elected as my deputy, she has lived these words “Our journey isn’t perfect but it’s ours … and I’ll stick with you ’til the end”. Soraya is committed to the process. She’s not the only one. I have to name a few others notably Ola Szaran, Matt Beaven and Svenja Koeppe.

Sometimes team work requires some of your best people to tackle tasks that are thankless. These are tasks that no one else wants because of the high risks of failure, ongoing intensity, the promise of high stress levels and credit, if any, will not be given if mistakes are made. Sometimes being in a team is having the willingness to allow people the time to make a choice that you wouldn’t make your-self and allow them the opportunity to make deci-sions, learn from their choices and support them to make amends if the journey isn’t perfect.

MEET JCI CANARY WHARF The new chapter in London with a

dedicated team to start off strong

by Sarah Beckwith - JCI UK Personal Development Director and JCI London Past President 2011

Oh what a night! On Tuesday 25 March, over 70 people gathered to celebrate JCI Canary Wharf becoming JCI UK’s newest affiliated chamber. And boy do these guys know how to celebrate!

The views from over the skyscrapers and wa-ter of Canary Wharf from the 48th floor Attic bar were stunning. There were great speeches explaining why the chamber was started, what it is setting out to achieve and what members can gain from JCI. The achievements of the members were recognised with awards for in-novation, excellence and leadership.

Attendees were treated to the best views over Canary Wharf

The Canary Wharf team have worked really hard and have already achieved an incredible amount. They have a vision (Lead you Life), they have already hosted many successful events and have some brilliant community pro-jects in the pipeline. It is no surprise they have

experienced 80% membership growth so far this year and have some very big ambitions for the rest of the year.

What strikes me is how much of a team they are. A team that is supportive, a team that is excited and a team that is having fun. Most of all a team that is open and encouraging others to join them, something I’m sure they’ll have no trouble with.

The room was packed with JCI Canary Wharf members, members from sister chamber JCI London, senators and non-members (also known as potential members) thanks to the hard work of organising team Leena, Ilario and Nabiil.

President, Michela Pascucci, on behalf of the chamber graciously thanked members, sen-ators and national board directors who have helped out and were there to support them. In fact I think we should be thanking them. It is seeing the success of a new chamber like Ca-nary Wharf that inspires and motivates me as a national board member. I feel very lucky to

have been able to play my part, however small, in their journey so far.

Deputy National President, Drew Charman, had this to say:

“It was a fantastic event. The energy and buzz in the room was electric. Both Michela Pascucci and Kate Senter gave amazing and inspiring speeches - it was one of those genu-ine moments that I was filled to the brim with pride at being both a member of JCI and a member of the National Board team”.

Members were recognised for their contribution to the or-ganisation

The JCI Canary Wharf affiliation party was the very defini-tion of a great JCI event - I came away with a huge smile on my face thanks to all the fantastic people I met (and wanting to run home and write a blog to shout about it!). I loved speaking to new and potential members of the chamber, answering their questions and hearing about their aspirations for their membership.

Congratulations JCI Canary Wharf - I can’t wait to see

Career empowerment

Business director Ceylan organized Wednesday’s event all around career empowerment. The participants learned how to use their customers are, what they are buying from them and most importantly how to make an emotional connection with them. The five most important things to remember from this event are:1 Who do you want to influence?2 What are their needs?3 How do I stimulate as many senses as possible?4 How do I make it seem seamless?5 When do I start?

An unforgettable eveningPerformances by Olivia Sabat and Otty & band live on stage plus a private performance with soul singer Coffee The evening started off with a champagne reception and entertainment from Jazz singer Victoria Ball & pianist Adam Grey performed, while magician Andy Lee mingled and entertained the guests. Of course, this was an opportunity for the guest to network and for old friends to meet up. We were pleased to welcome international guests from America, and our twin chapters Tallinn and Berlin. After everyone found their seat the starters were served the first performance of the evening from Olivia Sabat started. An outstanding performance from Olivia lead to the organisers themselves taking the centre stage with a speech about motivation, creativity, entrepreneurship and leadership that concluded in the premier of a JCI London video produced and sponsored by Portuguese mul-timedia company Gema.

The most anticipated speech of the night from Google Explorer Michael Rosenblum on Google Glass, the new wearable technology that will revolutionise the way we understand media. Michael delivered an engaging speech about media and the changes that happened from the beginning of time. Not only did he show us how Google Glass works, but also made us understand the changes that are ongoing in the industry. Michael kindly stayed to allow guests to try Google Glass them-selves.

The main course was served shortly after the talk and all the guests were able to resume conver-sation and enjoy the main course. After everyone was finished with the food Otty and his band took the stage. They managed to get people moving and engaged them to dance and sing along.

This helped make everyone hungry for the dessert, tea and coffee.

Once the main speakers delivered their inspirational speeches came the tradi-tional part of the evening the JCI London Chamber Awards of 2013, recognising the outstanding contribution of mem-bers. Helping JCI London becoming 60 years old through their commitment to making a difference and engaging other young professionals to join chamber. Fi-nally, it was also time to pass the Pres-idential chain from Eyad Hamouieh to Dexter Dash, concluding the dinner. Ac-tually, we had one final trick up our sleeve with surprise raffle for our guests. Then our DJ DuShaun took over. We partied in true JCI style, till the sun rose, we had a good contingency taking over the hotel bar til 3am.
