The Prairie City City Council will address the parking situation on Plainsmen Road dur-ing its Thursday, Feb. 6, meeting after having passed the first reading of an ordinance to allow for a loading and unload-ing zone next to Prairie City Elementary School.
City staff and council-ors are hoping for public input on the process at the meeting, and com-munity members have
been encouraged to at-tend with questions and concerns via the city’s social media.
The ordinance, draft-ed off of what is current-ly in use in Des Moines, would create a specific School Passenger Park-ing Zone, which would allow for parking be-tween 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on school days only for the purpose of loading or unloading school pas-sengers.
As a high school junior, a wide-eyed, 16-year-old Nancy Hoen went to work for the first time in the Jasper County Re-corder’s Office to work a sum-mer job.
It’s hard to imagine that girl, who grew up to become Jasper County Recorder Nancy Parrott
would be looking back this week upon a career in that very same office that has spanned more than 40 years. She announced publicly Thursday morning this will be her last year leading the office she transformed.
“County government has played such a wonderful part of my life, and I will never forget the many friends that I have made,” she said. “I look
forward to spending more time with family, including my ten grandchildren, and will stay connected to local government through my husband, Dennis.”
Dennis Parrott currently serves as Jasper County Audi-tor. He was re-elected in 2012.
Nancy Parrott has served as
A 28E agreement be-tween the city and the PCM school district has been approved by both entities, and now the de-sign process will move forward on a joint waste-water management proj-ect between the entities.
The hope is that the project, a new filtration and drainage system be-ing put in alongside the athletic complex in Prai-rie City, will help drain
the water out of the area more efficiently than in the past while also fil-tering the water through natural vegetation.
The project is esti-mated to cost around $245,000, which will be paid by the city. The funds will be coming from a State Revolving Fund loan the city had previously taken out for its new wastewater treat-ment plant.
Mud Pies and Sassa-fras Tea Antiques in Prai-rie City has expanded its hours, as well as its of-ferings, and it’s holding a sale this weekend, just in time for last-minute Val-entine’s Day shoppers.
The sisters and co-owners, Becky Horner and Linda Dorr, have been busy over the past several weeks, posting a slew of notices to their Facebook as they’ve picked estate sales, pur-chased collections and
bought a range of mis-cellaneous pieces.
The new acquisi-tions come along with the announcement of their new official hours. While they were previ-ously open about once or twice a month on the weekends, now they are setting down firm and official hours for the second Saturday of each month when they’ll open the show from 10 a.m. through 5 p.m.
“That’s a big change for us. We had a lot of people calling and asking when we were open, and
we wanted to have con-sistency,” owner Horner said. “We’ll probably also open an additional weekend if Prairie City is doing something or it makes sense for a sale.”
They have also begun opening a few items for rental, primarily for wed-dings. In a recent picking session, they acquired a pair of white iron can-delabra and blue-tinted Ball glass jars which will be their initial rental of-ferings.

The statement was passed by wide margin, with 249 voting in favor of its adoption while 56 voted against. (NAPSA)-A federal program offers free em-ployment services to people who get Social Security Disability In-surance (SSDI) and/or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). This pro-gram helps beneficiaries achieve financial inde-pendence. The program, run by Social Security, is called Ticket to Work. Ticket to Work supports people who want to earn more through work but who may need assis-tance in making the tran-sition from beneficiary to employee.
One Man’s StoryConsider the case
of Rob McClain, a suc-cessful businessman who was very active in his community. In addi-
tion to volunteering as a first responder and working as the Director of Investigations for the Gaming Commission, he ran a trucking company known as Big Rob’s, Inc. (BRI). BRI provided much-needed employ-ment in the community. He was satisfied with its success and with the activity in his 60-hour workweek. But his ambi-tious spirit was no match for the health challenges he faced.
McClain struggled with his weight since childhood, and eventual-ly weighed 550 pounds. “Everything was hard. But the most difficult part was the effect on my health...I couldn’t keep up with work,” he
said. When his kidneys failed, he had to stop working. He needed a new kidney, but for a transplant to succeed, other health conditions that could complicate recovery needed to be addressed. McClain and his doctors decided that gastric bypass surgery offered him the best chance. The surgery was a great success.
“I lost 300 pounds, my high blood pressure and sleep apnea,” he re-called. He was approved for SSDI benefits and while awaiting a kidney transplant, he received lengthy dialysis treat-ments. Always ambi-tious, Rob decided to use the time spent in di-alysis to earn his bache-lor’s degree online. After a successful transplant, he was ready to return to work. That’s when a counselor at the state vocational rehabilitation (VR) agency told him he was eligible for free em-
ployment support ser-vices through Social Se-curity’s Ticket to Work.
The Ticket to Work Program
Like McClain, Social Security disability ben-eficiaries age 18 through 64 qualify for a range of free services to help them prepare for, find and retain employment. State VR agencies and authorized Employment Networks (ENs) offer these services as part of Ticket to Work.
McClain received help with his résumé and job leads. And he got a job-but was apprehensive. “I was glad to find work but didn’t want to lose my disability benefits.” Fortunately for him, So-cial Security work incen-tives make it easier for adults with disabilities to enhance their job skills, gain work experi-ence and advance in a career. As a Social Se-curity beneficiary, he felt better about returning to
work knowing he would have time to settle into his job without fear of losing his benefits. For SSI beneficiaries, after certain exclusions, for every $2 a person earns each month, $1 is de-ducted from the monthly benefit. Soon, he was able to give up his dis-ability payments and live off his paycheck. “I love my job,” he said. “The [Ticket] program helped me transition back to stability.”
About Work Incen-tives
There are many dif-ferent work incentives available to help disabil-ity beneficiaries during their transition to work. Some include:
• Keeping Medicaid or Medicare coverage while working;
• Maintaining cash benefits while testing one’s ability to work; and
• Restarting ben-efits without another application (if benefits
have stopped due to in-creased earnings within five years of the last benefit payment).
Learn MoreMcClain found his
path to a better future with Ticket to Work. Find yours. For more informa-tion about Ticket to Work and work incentives, call the Ticket to Work Help Line at 1-866-968-7842 (V) or 866-833-2967 (TTY), or visit www.so-cialsecurity.gov/work.

(NAPSA)-Noth ing says summer like ham-burgers and hot dogs sizzling on the grill. In fact, according to the 25th annual We-ber GrillWatch Survey, more than 80 percent of grill owners say that burgers are their fa-vorite thing to grill, fol-lowed by hot dogs (75 percent).
To celebrate Amer-ica’s love affair with hamburgers, brats and other classic grilled fare, Weber Grills has released “Weber’s Big Book of Burgers”-their first cookbook dedicat-ed to fueling America’s passion for backyard classics.
“This book is truly a start-to-finish guide to throwing the ultimate backyard bash,” says New York Times best-selling cookbook author Jamie Purviance. “Each of the 160 recipes fea-tures a photo and goes beyond the burger, with fun twists on hot dogs, side dishes and even cocktails.”
“Weber’s Big Book of Burgers” also ex-plores famous regional favorites in its America the Burgerful section, including Santa Fe, where the green chili cheeseburger rules, to Columbia, South Car-olina’s own pimento cheeseburger.
An in-depth Sausage and Hot Dog Geog-raphy section salutes regional favorites like Classic Chicago-Style Hot Dogs topped with pickled “sport” peppers and neon-green relish,
and New York Hot Dogs with Sweet Red Onions.

Prep Time: 25 minutesGrilling Time: 6-8 minutes
4 slices thick-cut bacon1⁄3 cup mayonnaise1 teaspoon minced gar-
licKosher saltFreshly ground black
pepper2 ripe Hass avocados 1 tablespoon fresh lime
juice2 teaspoons minced
garlic 2 pounds ground chuck
(80 percent lean)1 tablespoon Worces-
tershire sauce1/2 teaspoon smoked
paprika1/2 teaspoon onion
powder8 thin slices cheddar
cheese 4 hamburger buns, split4 leaves Boston lettuce 1 ripe beefsteak toma-
to, cut crosswise into 4 slices about 1/3 inch thickIn a skillet over me-
dium heat, fry the ba-con until crisp, 10 to 12 minutes, turning occa-sionally. Drain on paper towels.
Whisk the mayo in-gredients, including 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Mash the guacamole ingredi-ents, including 1/2 tea-spoon salt and 1/4 tea-spoon pepper.
Mix the ground chuck with the Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon salt,
1/2 teaspoon pepper, the smoked paprika and onion powder, and then gently form eight patties of equal size, each about 1/2 inch thick and a little wider than the buns.
Refrigerate the pat-ties until ready to grill. Prepare the grill for di-rect cooking over me-dium-high heat (400° to 500° F). Grill the patties over direct medium-high heat, with the lid closed, until cooked to medium doneness (160° F), 6 to 8 minutes,
turning once. During the last 30
seconds to 1 minute of grilling time, place a slice of cheese on each patty to melt, and
toast the buns, cut side down, over direct heat.
Build each burger on a bun with garlic mayo, a lettuce leaf, a tomato slice, two patties, as much guacamole as you like, a slice of ba-con (torn in half) and more garlic mayo.
