With 5 Summer Cup titles ndash 3 of them consecutive - already jostling for space in his trophy cabinet and a 4-pronged arsenal for the 2016 Summer Cup we chat to Geoff Woodruff about the possiblity of a Fabulous FourthlsquoThe Guvrsquo started his Summer Cup collec-

tion with el Picha in 1999 and followed up with another argentinian-bred in eventuail in 2002 his current run kicked off in 2013 when he triumphed with yorker but in the style of the great maestro Terrance millard also saddled second and third past the post with master Sabina and Tellina and very nearly had the quartet as the gutsy Killua Castle mounted a huge run and finished a short head 5th

memory lane - 2013Geoff recalls ldquoIt was a near perfect lead

up for all the 4 horses We didnrsquot have a particularly successful November handi-cap day Wersquod had a bit of a virus and their bloods werenrsquot quite right plus wersquod had a bit of skin disease which isnrsquot a big deal but I find it does affect performance anyway they were all just coming out of it at that meeting and yorker finished 5th and Killua Castle ran 3rd

ldquoat that stage we werenrsquot sure yorker stayed and there was a lot of conjecture whether to go for the merchants or the Summer Cup anton marcus wasnrsquot sure but derek ndash and credit to him ndash said lsquoitrsquos the Summer Cup and you go there for the main race not the merchantsrsquo So anton decided to ride him stone cold like he doesnrsquot stayrdquo

ldquoOn the day I was watching all my horses and they were all quite close in the running you know your colours very well and I remember trying to look in 3 places at once I recall thinking lsquothis is promisingrsquo and hardly wanting to breathe ndash you just watch the screen and hope Robbie had been caught 3 deep on master Sabina and had to run wide anton got a dream run down the inside ndash itrsquos what you call luck in the running and yorker had it in buckets that day When they were over the line I could see first second and third and Killua was just pipped but each and every one ran a great great race

ldquoLooking back on it yorker was very well handicapped for the race ndash so much so that anton was a half over I think which just shows you he went on and later on fin-ished second in the met and won the horse Chestnut and Presidentrsquos Champions Chal-lenge at WFa I think if hersquod stayed around for that yearrsquos July the way it unfolded I think hersquod have been a huge runnerrdquo

you hope for it but you never expect a result like that I think what made me most proud was when Terrance was straight on the phone from Cape Town to say lsquowell done well done Irsquom so proud of yoursquo It made me feel so good to hear that from someone Irsquove always looked up to and ad-mired all my life It was almost surreal but absolutely wonderfulrdquo

2014 ndash Louis The KingNext came Triple Crown champion Louis

The King ldquoLouisrsquod got hurt in the July and it was a bit nip and tuck trying to get him ready he ran 3rd in the November hand-

icap and I was pretty certain he was going to run a very big race in the Summer Cup you always went to the course with Louis

knowing he was going to give you everything and I must be honest we did fancy him to win We were joking after-wards with akash aucharuz (who was on the second placed Killua Castle) he was so

sad he hadnrsquot won but hersquod been 100-1 in the betting and Piere was close to

favourite I said lsquoI think I might have had to wear a tin hat if you had

won theyrsquod have thrown bricks at mersquo but it was a great result

2015 ndash master SabinaLast year the plaudits went the way of

master Sabina ldquoIf one can have a favourite feature race winner that would be right up thererdquo says Geoff michael (de broglio) was overseas but he was in touch every single day master Sabina is such a special horse to us ndash hersquos absolutely beautiful and has a wonderful temperament and we just love him michael bred him and hersquos withstood adversity himself

ldquoWhen Louis won the previous year mas-ter Sabina had to be scratched but I think hersquod have given Louis a very hard time he was SO well going into that race and then we saw the tendon that Tuesday ndash it was terrible So often a tendon means the end and one wonders lsquodo they ever come back from a tendon and make a complete recov-eryrsquo but touch wood he has We caught it in its infancy when there was just a slight swelling so there were no core lesions and itrsquos healed very well I must say it was far from ideal prep going into that race We felt we still had him a little fat ndash hersquos prone to being a bit overweight ndash but we knew his ability and I think it was only that that got him there It wasnrsquot a great training feat on our part the horse did it himselfrdquo

ldquoI must be honest I think this year hersquos in a much better place hersquos trimmer fitter and hersquos jumping out of his skin hersquos 7 going on 2 I think he must have the fittest groom in racing how amos stays on his back while he bucks and performs I have no idea but if he doesnrsquot behave like that I worry hersquos very very well and I would expect him to produce a good run this year

ldquoGavin is one of my favourite riders and knows him well Wersquoll hope to settle him midfield If there is a good pace you can come from further back but we donrsquot want to give him a mountain to climb in the straightrdquo

Deo Juventeldquodeo Juvente was one of our picks from

the CTS 1 that year he was a little long in the back and hersquos not got a great action be-cause of it but hersquos very very fast hersquos won from 1400-1800m hersquos finished a short head second in the Summer Cup and hersquos relatively lightly raced ndash I think hersquoll have his day hersquos a big strong horse and I think hersquoll carry weight hersquos also got a terrific character - hersquoll snap and lay his teeth and ears back at you but if you go up to talk to him hersquoll put his ears forward hersquos a funny

horse like one of those grumpy people that you get to know who turn out to be quite nice hersquos a really honest reliable horserdquo

ldquoanton and I go way back to when I was still an apprentice to Ralph Rixon so we know each other well anton has ridden deo Ju-vente before but not in a big race The 8 draw is probably spot on for him ndash he can sit where hersquos drawn not run wide and put in his run when hersquos ready It wonrsquot matter to him whether they go fast or slow - he gets 2000m well but has got quite a good turn of footrdquo

ldquoWe ran him in the Spring Challenge just to get him going and hersquos stripped very fit and well for this race Wersquove just taken the bloods and theyrsquore looking good all the pieces are falling into placerdquo

Anthony Delpech on master Switchldquoanthony has ridden Gr1 winners for me and wersquove had quite a

bit of luck in features together master Switch is a very good hand-icapper and his last win was beating master Sabina he was more ready than master Sabina at that stage but probably needed to win that race to get in It didnrsquot come as a surprise that he won ndash I rate him and think hersquos a very good 2000m horse and he loves the Turffontein standside track

ldquoThe last time he ran over 2000m on the standside track he won by 4 lengths so hersquos very good and with the weight hersquos got I think hersquoll be competitive hersquos a Jet master and hersquos 5 now hersquos rela-tively lightly raced and has matured into what a Jet master should mature into so hersquos in the prime of his career Whether hersquos good enough or not wersquoll find out

ldquohersquos drawn wider out so anthony will have to look for the best position he can We donrsquot want him running handy as he doesnrsquot run that way but Irsquoll leave it with anthony ndash hersquoll know what to dordquo

master lsquon Commanderldquoalec Forbes is riding master lsquon Commander I donrsquot think alec

has ever ridden for me but I like him and I like his horsemanship ndash hersquos a very good lightweight rider and has good experience hersquos one of the under the radar jockeys but if you watch him ride hersquos very goodrdquo

ldquomaster lsquon Commander flopped badly in the victory moon but it was a race that just didnrsquot go for him at all We did quite fancy him but he got trapped 3 wide and got exposed at the front of the field in a slow run race and that wasnrsquot ever going to suit him I knew after theyrsquod gone 2 furlongs this wasnrsquot going to work and it didnrsquot so he faded rather tamelyrdquo he says philosophically

ldquohersquos another little horse that has got to be ridden for cover hersquos got to sit off the pace and once again I think alec will know what to do I will tell him how I think the horse likes to run and leave the race to alec Irsquom not on their backs when they leave the stalls and very rarely has a race unfolded exactly as you think so I donrsquot like to tie jockeys down to rigid instructions

ldquoWhether itrsquos fast or slow theyrsquove just got to try and ride the horse according to the style they prefer Irsquom very pleased with the help Irsquove got from the saddle this yearrdquo

Four in a row and perhaps even a double for master SabinaldquoLook Irsquod be lying if I said I wasnrsquot thinking about it but the law

of averages has got to be against us Irsquom trying to think of it as just another Summer Cup and wersquove just got to keep our heads down do our work and get the horses into the race in the best possible condition we can have them Wersquoll have to leave the rest to Lady Luck after all racing is all about luck and one could say wersquove had quite a lot of extra luck the last few yearsrdquo

Big (or even small) race days conjure up mental pictures of warm sunny after-noons with a kaleidoscope of horses and their colourfully clad jockeys jogging around the parade ring and down the chute like coiled springs poised to fire but have you ever stopped to wonder

where those lovely silks come from Like so many things in racing there are stories behind those too I chatted to Fiona mcLe-od from Odds On Colours ndash the largest supplier of printed racing colours in South africa - to find out more

About FionaFiona went to school with Sue Snaith and

relates that the two of them took riding les-sons together and have been firm friends since they were 10 years old ldquoWersquove known each other foreverrdquo explains Fiona

ldquoWe rode together at shows and even-tually Sue went off to do nursing and I went to varsity Sue carried on riding but I stopped as there just wasnrsquot the time and eventually I lost interest in that kind of riding Then I went overseas for a long time and didnrsquot ride at all but when I got back I think it was the first season the Snaiths brought horses to durban Sue rang up and asked lsquowhen was the last time you sat on a horsersquo I went down to Isipingo beach ndash it

How Your Silks Got Their Colour

was the days that you could still ride there - and they put me on a nice quiet horse It was the first time Irsquod ridden for many years and I fell in love with it again

ldquoThen Sue said lsquowhy donrsquot you come and ride work in the morningrsquo I said donrsquot be ridiculous I wouldnrsquot know how but the next day I arrived in borrowed boots and a hat vince Curtis was one of the academy Riding masters and demanded to know who I was and what I was doingrdquo she laughs ldquoanyway to cut a long story short I started off just trotting horses in the ring and then one or two of the braver train-ers such as old man Passmore put me on something bombproof and it started like that Someone who was really helpful was Ralph Rixonrdquo she remembers

ldquoby then I was addicted and Irsquod go down every single morning before work and ride work and I rode in quite a number of the ladies racesrdquo

after Fiona had her daughter in 1991 she decided not to go back to work but soon realised she was bored sitting at home

ldquoIrsquod gone back to riding work for vaughan marshall and one day I asked ldquoWho makes all the colours I quite like sewing and if you can give me some work it would be something for me to dordquo She then laughs explaining that her first order took two

weeks and nearly broke her neck and back trying to figure it out

ldquoI made colours the traditional way for the

first few monthsrdquo The lsquotraditional

wayrsquo entailed sourcing material

of the requisite colours and then

cutting and sewing the pieces together to make up the silks For

example the Jaffee colours would require white for

the body black for the diamonds and red

for the sleeves and cap It was time consuming and labour intensive

with the added disadvantage that silks did not always come out exactly the same as you are limited to what is available in the shopsrdquo

ldquoat the time I remember saying to val Rixon there must be a different way of doing colours and I experimented with screen printing but the ink all cracked and that didnrsquot work val told me about a place in Perth with a shop on the racecourse that did printed colours so I contacted them and tried to negotiate a franchise of sorts but it was outrageously expensive and there werenrsquot enough owners in this country to warrant spending that kind of money In the meantime theyrsquod sent me a couple of samples and I took it to someone who explained that it had been done by sublimation printingrdquo

ldquoI decided I wanted to print silks and did quite a bit of research and bothered a lot of people in the printing industry who all said I was wasting my time and that it was not possible eventually I found a guy who said he thought he could help Now wersquore talking the early 90rsquos which was long before the days of digital anything but with a lot of trial and error and a lot of mistakes we found a way so we sort of pioneered it in South africa

ldquoand thatrsquos how I did it until digital print became available in the early 2000rsquos So things have progressed but my colours are still printed itrsquos just more accurate nowrdquordquo

Fiona now makes racing silks and associ-ated racing kit on a full-time basis

DesignFor traditional fit silks Fiona uses a light-

weight satin that has a fantastic shine is machine washable and colourfast She uses white and then transfers the ink onto the fabric in the required pattern

ldquoSometimes owners will call me direct but most of my orders come through word of mouth or if someone has picked up a pamphet at the Nha in Johannesburg or their local centre but 90 of my orders come via trainers Theyrsquoll ring up and ask for a set of colours for so-and-so and if theyrsquore not already in my database Irsquoll ring Zodwa at the Nha for the description

ldquoOne of the benefits of printing is that once a particular pattern is in my system if I get another order 6 months down the line the colours will be identical ndash one doesnrsquot have to rely on what might ndash or might not be ndash available in the shops as an example I once made up a set of silks for someone only to have them sent back because Irsquod used the wrong shade of blue

ldquoThey sent us a sample of what they wanted and we matched it and now we can reproduce the silks any time they like and they will be the correct shaderdquo

DermosnugsFiona has also adapted the fit over the years and now makes

slimline silks which she calls lsquodermosnugsrsquo ldquoI suppose itrsquos the fashion at the moment ndash everything is tighter

ndash if you watch racing in america and Japan they also tend to go for tighter fitting silks but even rugby jerseys and other sports clothing - theyrsquore all skin tight

ldquoThe very first person who asked me to make tight colours was James Goodman ndash he said he thought they were more advanta-geous and more aerodynamic so I experimented with making his and that was back in around 2007rdquo

ldquoFor the dermosnug silks I use a special knit that I have made specifically for this application Itrsquos got quite a lot of stretch but itrsquos not lycra so itrsquos slimline but not skin tight and the jockeys can move comfortably The Snaiths use them quite a lot but vaughan marshall Sean Tarry Johan Janse van vuuren - a lot of trainers are changing to them now

ldquohowever there are lots of trainers who are still traditional in what they want and of course wersquore happy to oblige but both fabrics take a print very wellrdquo

ldquoThe colours are really vibrant and bright I once asked Graeme hawkins for an endorsement for a brochure and he said lsquoyour col-ours make race calling an absolute pleasure ndash theyrsquore so obviously what theyrsquore supposed to berdquo

Turnaround timeldquoIt depends on how busy the factory is but turnaround time

is usually two weeks although we can make a plan if necessary Then we package it up and send it off We send stuff all around the country and sometimes even around the world and once managed to get a set of silks made up and delivered to dubai in 4 daysrdquo

Can she pick her silks out from the bunch ldquoyes although you canrsquot always tell on Tv or from far away whether itrsquos stitched or print but on the dermosnug ones Irsquove got a telltale zip with Odds On on the tab which stands out and which one can see quite clear-lyrdquo

Circle making saddle cloths winnersrsquo blankets sashes amp grooms bibs for the feature races and some of their sashes ldquoFor the beach beauty farewell I made all the blankets and sashes etc Irsquove also done a few for Cape Town featuresrdquo She also personalises blinkers makes the most beautiful mounted and framed miniature replica silks (the perfect Christmas idea for that hard to buy person) and one of my favourite of her products are her personalised brow-bands

ldquoThen I thought it would be easier if it could just wrap around the browband rather than having to be undone and Justin said it wouldnrsquot create much extra work so I started making them out of lycra and now you just slip them on and off I started making them up with whatever I thought would look good with the silks and I must say it looks very nice vaughan marshall and adam marcus are also very particular about turnout and have also started using the browbandsrdquo

proud momentsare there any races that shersquos particularly proud to have made

the silks for ldquoThe one that comes to mind is the July dead heat between Pocket Power and dancerrsquos daughter Those were still the very old fashioned baggy silks but I was terribly excited that they were both mine The year that maine Chance had the first three past the post those were also all minerdquo

Fiona was also commissioned to do the commemorative frame of miniatures that hangs in the maine Chance office ldquobut basically I can flip on the Tv any day and put on Tellytrack and see my work I still get excited when I see the horses ringing behind the pens and realise the jockeys are wearing my silksrdquo

Hyman maisel fondly known to most as lsquoHymiersquo passed away during the night of Saturday 19 November 2016he will be remembered by those who knew him as one of the

most passionate people in racing an owner breeder and admin-istrator hymie maisel was a true servant to the industry devoting endless time and energy both to his beloved pedigrees as well as to the various committees on which he served so tirelessly for the betterment of South african racing

his fascination for horses and racing stemmed from seeing han-som cabs carrying passengers to the races past the family home in Kenilworth and the die was cast

as an owner he started out with the late athol Fisher and was one of the first to support a young Stan elley as well as the late Colin burroughs (who trained his good filly molly mandy) amongst others

Stan elley remembers ldquoIrsquod just started and been going a year or so when hymie arrived he was bloody good to me and gave me some well bred fillies We had a lot of luck together and he helped put me on the maprdquo horses that carried the maisel silks of heli-otrope with a scarlet cap included Tacos a daughter of Cornada who was just touched off in the WP Fillies Nursery another Cor-nada daughter Gleaner won her first 4 starts and other successful horses included Robin-In-Rags and Tipsy Tart display model was touched off in the Fillies Guineas won the majorca Stakes and was beaten a whisker in the Natal Oaksrdquo

ldquohis business was called display modelsrdquo continues mr el-ley ldquoThey made all those dummies in shop windows chrome racks ndash anything for those types of shops I think he ploughed most of it into racingrdquo he says fondly ldquohis wife Joan was a lovely lady and they had three daughters including Lerisse who is now married to Kenilworth Racing director vidrik Thurlingrdquo

ldquohymie was the most enthusiastic and passionate owner Irsquove ever trained for he loved his horses and loved the spirit of racing to the extent that he upset a few people When he first came on the scene he was seen as a bit of a firebrand and a hot head and wasnrsquot all that popular but in the end people warmed to him because they could see he was so passionaterdquo In an interview with Racing Southern africa hymie is quoted as saying- ldquoRothchildrsquos quote exemplifies everything that attracts me to the sport lsquoRac-ing is competition in its purest form so simple and direct that its fascination is irresistible and before one knows it one identifies oneself with onersquos horse That electrifying connection between owner and horse makes it difficult to imagine any other sport offering the same level of excite-ment I remember walking on air when I had my first winner very few experiences have left me with that same feelingrdquo

mr elley recalls an incident with a dowdstown Charley filly hymie bought from dennis hou-ston ldquoShe was a weak light filly that had only been tried over sprints hymie insisted I run her over a mile and a half I said lsquoshersquos too weak we canrsquot put her over that farrsquo eventually I agreed on condition that wersquod only run her if I could get Stanley amos to ride Stan took her to the front and wonrdquo he laughs ldquohymie understood pedigrees better than anyone I knewrdquo

pedigree passionhymie was well known for his passion for breeding and pedi-

grees he started his breeding operation with antonie badenhorst in Colesberg later purchasing Terrance millardrsquos premises in Philip-pi and founding hyjo Stud (so named by taking the first two letters of his name combined with the first two letters of his wife Joan)

Through his enthusiasm for breeding and pedigrees hymiersquos opinion was frequently sought and he advised on matings that produced Star effort (bred by Tolly Novick) and alpha Omega (John Wilson) amongst others his hyjo Stud stood stallions including Flower Power Proclaim my earl and Pole Position and his Philippi nursery was responsible for Gr1 winners including Sweet Chestnut (Cape Fillies Guineas) Corning Touch (Cape derby) Legality (em-press Club Stakes) ancestral Fore (Gold Cup) and 2011 Jampb met winner Past master

Administrative contributionOutside of his business family and breeding interests hymie

still found time to devote to administrative and stewarding work in racing and breeding he served as Chairman of the Sa Turf Club overseeing the amalgamation with Gold Circle he served as a board member of Gold Circle and was the first chairman of the Western Cape Chapter of Gold Circle his leadership was insight-ful and visionary recognising the need for the industry to change with the times and market itself to a new demographic in order to remain relevant ldquoThe secret of success lies in the ability to rec-ognise the necessity for change and to have the courage to make the adjustment irrespective of how uncomfortable the period of metamorphosis may berdquo

he felt strongly that the punter was of vital importance - over and above the owner ndash and that every effort should be taken to address the public perception that racing is dishonest he was strongly in favour of transparency and in that capacity helped introduce sectional timing to Cape racing in 1999

hymie was also a long-serving member of the Tba ndash including serving as Chairman for 9 years during which time he worked tirelessly to open the South african market to the racing world In fact he was responsible for selling the first South african-bred horse money market to race in malaysia which went on to win the countryrsquos richest race at the time the R3-million Cunku Gold Cup hymie was on the Jockey Club executive as well as the Cape

breeders Club being voted Cape breeders man Of The year in 1986

he held strong opinions and wasnrsquot afraid to stand up for them during his tenure as Chairman of the Tba he oversaw the introduction of controver-sial import restrictions for horses especially from australia famously refusing to meet with australian racing executives visiting for the met Infuriated that

his wife was once refused entry to the parade ring (on grounds of not being a colour holder) he changed his colours into the name of lsquomr amp mrs he maiselrsquo

Rodney dunn who served alongside hymie on many boards and committees says ldquohe stood for absolute integrity and fair treatment for everyone rdquo

The presence of a 35kmh tailwind on Sunday had the track running fast The quickest of the three 1200m events on the eight race program was the mR76 handicap won by the St Petersburg mare vICTORy TaKeOveR Swiftly guided over from a wide draw by brandon Lerena Robbie hillrsquos charge was soon in her favourite position at the head of affairs She gave her all in the straight and just held on by the narrowest of margins from the always handy LuNaR RuSh Running on from the back in this race SChOOL RuN was finishing best of all and was only beaten a neck

The only other distance to stage more than one race was 2000m where the faster of the two was the pinnacle stakes won by dOubLe CLuTCh Nicely positioned in third as the eleven runners turned for home the 6yo son of Stronghold ran on stroutly in the straight and just held on by the narrowest of margins after striking the front 200m from home

The lucky last was a maiden plate over 2000m and here the locals were sent home happy when bLaCK FOReST did the busi-ness always in touch with the leaders the 1610 favourite put his head in front 250m out and won going away from ShINe uP by a length and a halfTitbits Soon up handy the newcomer VAR-SONIC was eased late when winning the maiden plate for the girls over 1200m very comfortably by two and a half

Trainer Sean Tarry was in devastating form at the vaal on Tuesday winning four of the seven races that he contested The second of their winners came in what proved to be the fastest of the three 1400m races a mR82 handicap when COPPeR POT showed good improvement Just five went to post and although the son of visionaire sat at the back he was always close enough to pounce he did so going through the 300m and although his front running stable companion kept on deter-minedly once headed he won going away by two and a half

Stable companions also fought out the finish in the faster of the two 1800m events a mR68 handicap where SuPeR STRaTum kept his unbeaten record in-tact Nibbled at on course into 61 from 8rsquos Geoff Woodruffrsquos charge wasnrsquot the quickest into stride and as a result he raced towards the rear early on his marginally more fancied stable companion eLeveNSeS raced with him and in what proved to be a real thriller only a neck separated them at the wire

They also ran two races over 2400m and by far the quicker of these was the mR71 affair won by the 8yo COmmOdORe aL allowed to drift as if a win was out of the question at the track (121 out to 221) the veteran raced third in what soon became a very strung out field he put his head in front 100m out and just had enough in hand to beat the 3310 second favourite TaLbeC by a neck The runner up came from the backend of midfield and was gaining quickly at the finish Titbits After losing two lengths at the start Mike De Kockrsquos newcomer ALAADEL ran on strongly from the rear and with the rest well beaten he only went down by a neck to the always handy even money favourite TILBURY FORT
