Service-oriented architecture (SOA) allows the integration of existing systems, applications, and users into a flexible architecture that can easily accommodate changing needs. To help enterprises address this challenge, the Dell PowerEdge 2950 III includes energy efficient components as well as optional on-board, real-time power monitoring capabilities that can help reduce unnecessary power consumption. Dell is a tier-one server vendor 100% committed to industry standards, which is why this solution adheres to the PMBus specification, enabling interoperability with other vendors’ products. Dell is the major server vendor to offer a line of mainstream servers in which key components have been optimized for low energy consumption. Another advantage to this standardization is that the end user will not be in a situation of vendor lock-in. They will be able to purchase and deploy hardware in a heterogeneous environment without having to anticipate severe work stoppages.

The JBoss Dell Modular SOA involves a SOA-based cloud platform using an enterprise service bus (ESB). The environment provides a highly clustered and highly virtualized architecture for an agile and scalable grid of computing and resources. The physical layer of the architecture consists of Dell PowerEdge 2850 servers, storage-area networks (SANs), Ethernet networks, and Fibre Channel switches. The foundation layer of the architecture creates a physical “resource pool” for the system to utilize at the virtualization layer, where server, network, and storage resources can be more efficiently leveraged. The Red Hat Global File System (GFS) on top of the Red Hat Cluster Suite creates the transaction processing environment. The Red Hat Conga cluster management capability, a component of Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Platform, is used to control cluster and storage management.

At the application layer, the JBoss Application Server proves the ability to create a clustered application server environment. Its built-in redundancy allows the implementation of a message-driven Message-Oriented Middleware (MOM) infrastructure using the JBoss Enterprise SOA Platform that includes the JBoss Enterprise Service Bus (ESB), JBoss JBPM, and JBoss Rules. JBoss Operations Network performs application and service management.
