8. India Infrastructure Report 2013 - 2014 - The Road to Universal Health Coverage. By IDFC Foundation, 2014 (PB). The
Indian population today has little or no access to good quality health care at affordable prices. Not surprisingly, on several of
the basic health indicators India ranks amongst the lowest in the world. The health crisis is aggravated by a rising incidence
of chronic and non-infectious diseases. The public health system is in jeopardy, due to decades of appallingly low public
investments; inadequate and antiquated infrastructure; severe shortage of human resources; and inadequacies in
government policies. Failed public health systems have forced people to turn to the private sector, which is costly and
unregulated, with services often being provided by unqualified medical practitioners. As a result, people seeking health care
services have the agonizing choice between poor quality public facilities and costly, yet undependable private services.
Preventive and primary health care have been marginalized, with the focus having shifted to curative tertiary care, higher
importance of clinical medicine and extremely high dependence on clinical investigations. Health expenditures can be
prohibitively high with the rural population and the urban poor being the worst sufferers. India is thus faced with the daunting
challenge of providing Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and ensuring that all people receive good quality health care
without facing significant financial difficulty. ,. (JBA Code: 150730)

begun setting the green terms for construction and operation of buildings in India, but it remains a relatively new area of
governance. India needs appropriate regulations to benchmark energy and water use, minimize waste and develop
monitoring and compliance strategies. Also needed is a deeper public understanding of what works and what does not. If not
done right, even green norms can lead to damaging trade-offs and unintended consequences.. (JBA Code: 150985)

54. The Improbable Primate - How Water Shaped Human Evolution. By Clive Finlayson, 2014 (HB). Taking an ecological
approach to our evolution, Clive Finlayson considers the origins of modern humans within the context of a drying climate and
changing landscapes. Finlayson argues that environmental change, particularly availability of water, played a critical role in
shaping the direction of human evolution, contributing to our spread and success. He argues that our ancestors carved a
niche for themselves by leaving the forest and forcing their way into a long-established community of carnivores in a tropical
savannah as climate changes opened up the landscape. They took their chance at high noon, when most other predators
were asleep. Adapting to this new lifestyle by shedding their hair and developing an active sweating system to keep cool,
being close to fresh water was vital. As the climate dried, our ancestors, already bipedal, became taller and slimmer, more
adept at travelling farther in search of water. The challenges of seeking water in a drying landscape moulded the minds and
bodies of early humans, and directed their migrations and eventual settlements.. (JBA Code: 151112)

57. Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights in International Law - Contemporary Issues and Challenges. By Eibe Riedel,
Gilles Giacca and Christophe Golay, 2014 (HB). This book clarifies and illuminates the multiple aspects of the law governing
ESC rights, by bringing together all the different aspects of ESC rights, re-stating the challenges they face, and assessing
the progress that has been made in expanding their adoption. After an introduction by the editors on ESC rights and the
contemporary issues in their realization, the book contains over twenty essays on the main issues related to the progressive
realization of ESC rights and their monitoring mechanisms. The authors of the chapters, both scholars and practitioners, take
an interdisciplinary approach to move beyond the traditional analysis of ESC rights, contextualizing their discussions against
wider contemporary international law challenges. In reflecting this diversity of perspectives, the book sheds light on the new
methodologies for implementation and the many obstacles faced by the realization of ESC rights. It is invaluable reading for

88. Fight or Flight - Britain, France, and their Roads from Empire. By Martin Thomas, 2014 (HB). Fight or Flight is the first
ever comparative account of this dramatic collapse, explaining the end of the British and French colonial empires as an
intertwined, even co-dependent process. Decolonization gathered momentum, not as an empire-specific affair, but as a
global one, in which the wider march of twentieth-century history played a vital part: industrial concentration and global
depression, World War and Cold War, Communism and other anti-colonial ideologies, mass consumerism and the allure of
American popular culture. Above all, as Martin Thomas shows, the internationalization of colonial affairs made it impossible
to contain colonial problems locally, spelling the end for Europe's two largest colonial empires in less than two decades from
the end of the Second World War.. (JBA Code: 151125)

92. Mithak = Mithya (in Hindi). By By Devdutt Pattanaik, 2014 (PB). A decoding of Hindu mythology Hindus have one God.
They also have 330 million gods: male gods, female gods, personal gods, family gods, household gods, village gods, gods
of space and time, gods for specific castes and particular professions, gods who reside in trees, in animals, in minerals, in
geometrical patterns and in man-made objects Then there are a whole host of demons. But no Devil. In this groundbreaking
book Dr Devdutt Pattanaik, one of Indias most popular mythologists, seeks an answer to these apparent paradoxes and
unravels an inherited truth about life and death, nature and culture, perfection and possibility. He retells sacred Hindu stories
and decodes Hindu symbols and rituals, using a unique style of commentary, illustrations and diagrams. We discover why
the villainous Kauravas went to heaven and the virtuous Pandavas (all except Yudhishtira) were sent to hell; why Rama
despite abandoning the innocent Sita remains the model king; why the blood-drinking Kali is another form of the milk-giving
Gauri; and why Shiva wrenched off the fifth head of Brahma. Constructed over generations, Hindu myths serve as windows
to the soul, and provide an understanding of the world around us. The aim is not to outgrow myth, but to be enriched and
empowered by its ancient, potent and still relevant language.. (JBA Code: 151020)

94. New Cultural Histories of India - Materiality and Practices. By Partha Chatterjee, Tapati Guha-Thakurta and Bodhisattva
Kar, 2014 (HB). This book examines the new orientations in the writing of cultural histories of India from the pre-colonial and
early modern period into the postcolonial and contemporary era. It analyses the "materialist" turn through wide-ranging
textual, visual, aural, ritual, and spatial resources like eighteenth-century scribal literature in western India, art deco
architecture in twentieth century Calcutta, contemporary urban spaces, early illustrated Bengali almanacs, circulating heads
in Naga hills, football in Calcutta's politics, performance and film-making studies in south India, and Mayawati's monuments
in Lucknow. The essays examine how recent interdisciplinary studies have enriched our understanding of cultural pasts and
presents. Providing an overview of the popular and public manifestations of cultures over time, this volume traces the distinct
trajectory of cultural histories of India. It highlights the need for a more dynamic formulation of new cultural history of India in

did not emanate from north Indian calls for a separatist "Muslim" state of Pakistan, but rather emerged out of a sustained
engagement with local Bengali intellectual and literary traditions. . (JBA Code: 151053)

American popular culture. Above all, as Martin Thomas shows, the internationalization of colonial affairs made it impossible
to contain colonial problems locally, spelling the end for Europe's two largest colonial empires in less than two decades from

185. Being Muslim in South Asia. By Robin Jeffrey and Ronojoy Sen (Eds.), 2014 (HB). This book contributes to the rich recent
scholarship on contemporary Islam in South Asia. It provides insights into the controversies of the past 150 years over how
South Asian Muslims ought to respond to the challenges of modernity and Western imperialism. Though such contests of
ideas began with a few intellectuals, their consequences flowed through to touch the lives of ordinary people. The book also
traces the processes, in train since British times, that have created large social categories out of diverse, dispersed
communities. In the past, such communities shared only a common devotion, a sacred book and the duties the book
enshrined. . (JBA Code: 151110)

It is invaluable reading for
scholars, students, practitioners, and NGOs working with or studying ESC rights.. (JBA Code: 151123)

187. International Development - Ideas, Experience, and Prospects. By Bruce Currie-Alder, Ravi Kanbur, David M. Malone
and Rohinton Medhora (Eds.), 2014 (PB). Thinking on development informs and inspires the actions of people,
organizations, and states in their continuous effort to invent a better world. This volume examines the ideas behind
development: their origins, how they have changed and spread over time, and how they may evolve over the coming
decades. It also examines how the real-life experiences of different countries and organizations have been inspired by, and
contributed to, thinking on development. The extent to which development 'works' depends in part on particular local,
historical, or institutional contexts. General policy prescriptions fail when the necessary conditions that make them work are
either absent, ignored, or poorly understood. There is a need to grasp how people understand their own development
experience. If the countries of the world are varied in every way, from their initial conditions to the degree of their openness
to outside money and influence, and success is not centred in any one group, it stands to reason that there cannot be a
single recipe for development.. (JBA Code: 151127)
