A MESSAGE FROM DR. CHRISTOPHER DOANE,Dean, School of Music
On behalf of the School of Music it is my pleasure to welcome you to the events of the UofL School of Music’s 2017 Jazz Fest. The School of Music recognizes all the faculty members of the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Studies Program, including Ansyn Banks, Chris Fitzgerald, Mike Hyman, Jerry Tolson, Mike Tracy, Craig Wagner, and Gabe Evens, for their work in organizing and presenting this year’s terrific set of events and concerts for jazz fans throughout the region. Additionally, I would like to also acknowledge the important support for this event from our staff of Graduate Assistants and all the students in Jazz Studies program. The 2017 Jazz Fest, now in its 25th year at UofL, provides a combination of concerts and master classes featuring established and emerging jazz artists to provide opportunities for audiences to experience the past, present, and future of jazz in the United States and around the world.
The school is especially pleased to welcome to the University of Louisville the musicians of our International combos who will perform during the opening concert and our special guest artists, trombonist Wycliffe Gordon, and the Metta Quintet, including Greg Ward, alto saxophonist, Wayne Escoffery, tenor saxophone, Glenn Zaleski, pianist, Rashaan Carter, bassist, and drummer Hans Schuman.
Additionally, we thank our panel of adjudicators and clinicians, who provide great service to the School of Music and Jazz Fest through their work with our students and the visiting high school jazz bands that make up such an important part of this event. These important contributors include Adam Gaines, trumpet, Reso Kiknadze, saxophone, Sean Parsons, piano, and Terry O’Mahoney, drums. In addition to their work with our visiting jazz ensembles, they will be featured with UofL Jazz Ensemble II on Thursday evening.
In addition to the opportunity to showcase some of the finest jazz performers and teachers working today, these events are all about providing educational opportunities for students at UofL, community members, and jazz students throughout our region. So, to all who participate in this critically important part of the festival, please accept this acknowledgment and our thanks.
The School of Music and Jazz Studies at UofL is proud to present Jazz Fest as part of the university’s observance of African American History Month and a major artistic event in celebration of the unique contribution of jazz to our musical culture.

METTA QUINTET
A cohesive, tight-knit unit featuring some of today’s most esteemed, cre-ative artists, METTA QUINTET is fueled by a collective, open-minded musical curiosity and dedicated to exploring new artistic territory while maintaining a passionate commitment to arts education, fostering new audiences and nurturing young talent.
Through the commissioning of all-new works and the creation of immer-sive, live multi-media concert programs for the MAIN STAGE, METTA QUINTET is committed to challenging convention and expanding the boundaries of the live jazz experience.
The quintet released its critically acclaimed debut recording, Going to Meet The Man (Koch) in 2002 featuring eight commissioned works by the then-emerging, now-renowned composers, Brad Mehldau, Kurt Rosen-winkel, Mark Turner, Larry Goldings and George Colligan. All works were inspired by short stories by celebrated American author James Baldwin. In July 2006, Sunnyside Records released the quintet’s second critically lauded CD Subway Songs, which features eight all-original com-missioned compositions inspired by the sociological dynamism of the New York City Subway experience.
In early 2012, the quintet, in partnership with the digital music distribu-tor, The Orchard, released the globally-themed, Big Drum/Small World to unanimously positive reviews! The project features a diverse array of all-new music by renowned composers from eight different countries in-cluding Lionel Loueke, Miguel Zenon, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Yosvan-ny Terry, Omer Avital and Metta Quintet’s very own, Marcus Strickland. The project explores the globalization and ever-broadening definition and sound of jazz.

The Visiting Jazz Artist Endowed Chair
Wycliffe Gordon
Musical ambassador and interpreter of America’s music, Wycliffe Gordon experiences an impressive career touring the world performing hard-swinging, straight-ahead jazz receiving great acclaim from audiences and critics alike. His unmatched modern mastery of the plunger mute and his exceptional technique and signature sound, has solidified Gordon a place in musical history known as one of the top trombonists of his generation.
The Critics seem to agree. Once again, the Downbeat Critics Poll named Wycliffe “Best Trombone” for four years now, (2016, 2014, 2013 & 2012), and Jazz Journalists Association named him “Trombonist of the Year” again this year, 2016, as well as eight times previously. In 2015, Wycliffe was named “Best Trombone” by Jazzed Reader’s Poll, and was presented the Satchmo award from the Sarasota Jazz Club, received the Louis Armstrong Memorial Prize presented by the Swing Jazz Culture Foundation, and was named Artist of the Year (2015) by the Augusta Arts Council. He is also a past recipient of the ASCAP Foundation Vanguard Award, among others. In addition to an extremely successful solo career, Gordon tours regularly leading his quintet known as Wycliffe Gordon and His International All-Stars, headlining at legendary jazz venues and performing arts centers throughout the world. He is commissioned frequently, and has an extensive catalog of original compositions that span the various timbres of jazz and chamber music. Musicians and ensembles of every caliber perform his music throughout the world and his arrangement of the theme song to NPR’s “All Things Considered” is heard daily across the globe. His show “Jazz a la Carte” was named one of the five best moments in jazz by the Wall Street Journal. Gordon is a former veteran member of the Wynton Marsalis Septet, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and has been a featured guest artist on Billy Taylor’s “Jazz at the Kennedy Center” Series. Gordon’s recordings are a model of consistency and inspiration. His most recent release, “Within These Gates of Mine” is an original soundtrack and film score for the 1920’s silent film “Within Our Gates” by African-American filmmaker Oscar Micheaux, and was launched this spring at the Savannah Music Festival after a screening of the film. His arrangement of “Bill Bailey” from his CD “Dreams of New Orleans” on Chesky Records, can be heard in the recent blockbuster “Race” the biopic of track legend Jesse Owens. Other releases, “Somebody New,” a big band album featuring the DiMartino/Osland Jazz Orchestra, his “Hello Pops, A Tribute to Louis Armstrong” cd and “The Intimate Ellington: Ballads and Blues” continue to get rave reviews. His musical expertise is sought out by artists across the globe and has been captured on countless projects with other artists including Wynton Marsalis, Paul Simon, Natalie Merchant, Rene Marie, Dianne Reeves, Anat Cohen, Ricky Skaggs, Arturo Sandoval and Doc Severinsen to name a few. In addition to performing, composing and recording, Gordon is one of America’s most persuasive and committed music educators, and serves as Artist-in-Residence at Augusta University in Augusta, GA. Last season he returned for a residency at Columbia College in Chicago, and continued as Music Director for the LALPC (Louis Armstrong Legacy Project). This year, he will be in residence at the James Morrison Academy in Australia and returns to Centrum and Vail music camps. He has published several books including “This Rhythm On My Mind with accompanying CD released in 2012 and “Sing It First”—Wycliffe’s own unique approach to playing the instrument, released in 2011. His work with young musicians and audiences from elementary schools to universities all over the world is extensive, and includes master classes, clinics, workshops, children’s concerts and lectures — powerful evidence of his unique ability to relate musically to people of all ages.
