POEM AND EXPLANATION

Page 3: Jazmine G. Diana I. Amanda K. Sierra M.. POEM AND EXPLANATION

It was many and many a year ago,

   In a kingdom by the sea,

That a maiden there lived whom you may know

   By the name of Annabel Lee;

And this maiden she lived with no other thought

   Than to love and be loved by me.

• We are first introduced to Annabel Lee and we see their perfect “kingdom” which is just their blissful, flawless, and content sanctuary.

• The reason for Annabel Lee and the speaker to live was to love each other uncontrollably.

I was a child and she was a child,

   In this kingdom by the sea,

But we loved with a love that was more than love—

   I and my Annabel Lee—

With a love that the wingèd seraphs of Heaven

   Coveted her and me.

• Their love started innocent but as they grew together (literally and emotionally) they developed something more.

• It just wasn’t love, it was a strong connection that no one understood.

• Baby angels/ cupids in Heaven were all jealous of their love and relationship. They couldn’t have what the humans had.

• Wingèd Seraphs – a member of the highest order of angels, often represented as a child’s head with wings above, below, and on each side.

• Coveted – To feel strong or immoderate desire for(that which is another’s).

• The 'kingdom by the sea' could also be seen as a utopia. The perfect world where the speaker and Annabel Lee lived and loved eachother when they were younger and everything was still perfect for them.

And this was the reason that, long ago,

   In this kingdom by the sea,

A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling

   My beautiful Annabel Lee;

So that her highborn kinsmen came

   And bore her away from me,

To shut her up in a sepulchre

   In this kingdom by the sea.

• The “chilling” was pneumonia that she got due to bad weather.

• Her family came and had to bury her and the speaker could no longer be with her.

• They ended her voice in a tomb made of stone.

The angels, not half so happy in Heaven,

   Went envying her and me—

Yes!—that was the reason (as all men know,

   In this kingdom by the sea)

That the wind came out of the cloud by night,

   Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

• The angles were still extremely envious of their love and the speaker believed that they were the cause of her death because they were the ones who sent her the chilling.

• Restating that her cause of death was by getting pneumonia.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love

   Of those who were older than we—

   Of many far wiser than we—

And neither the angels in Heaven above

   Nor the demons down under the sea

Can ever dissever my soul from the soul

   Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;

• Their love and connection surpassed everyone and no one could ever feel or understand what they had.

• No other woman could compare to Annabel Lee.

• Add that their love was so strong that even death couldn’t tear them apart. Not even the 'angels in heaven above nor the demons down under the sea can ever DISSEVER (verb-to divide or sever (aka cut) something)) my soul from the soul of the beautiful Annabel Lee'

For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams

   Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;

And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes

   Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;

And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side

   Of my darling—my darling—my life and my bride,

   In her sepulchre there by the sea—

   In her tomb by the sounding sea.

• He can no longer sleep nor dream without thinking of her.

• Although the nights are not bright and the dark nights bring him sadness, Anna’s bright eyes bring him hope and happiness even though she isn’t there in person.

• She was his life and will forever be there in spirit.
