If you were to meet Jaymee — an effervescent, confident, young woman — it would be hard to imagine that just a few years ago she was facing a possible prison sentence.
Jaymee knew about addiction while growing up in a family with drug and alcohol problems. Despite her chaotic home life, she managed to excel in school. But by the time she was 13, she had experimented with alcohol and marijuana and by age 17, she was in a rehab facility for a drug and alcohol addiction.
After completing that first recovery program Jaymee graduated from high school, had a job, and was taking college classes. A relatively minor injury set Jaymee’s life on a dangerous path. She broke her finger in a car accident and was prescribed Vicodin, leading to a five-year, $150-a-day addiction to prescription pain medications.
When Jaymee could no longer get prescriptions from her doctors, she bought drugs on the street, including heroin. Six months later, Jaymee’s addiction to heroin left her unemployable, broken, and empty.
“I was living to use — merely existing,” she says.
To avoid a prison sentence, Jaymee entered a rehab facility where she was assigned a mentor from the POWER Connection program. Mentors are POWER staff who are in long-term recovery and help their clients achieve and sustain recovery for themselves. At first, Jaymee thought she had nothing in common with her mentor but she soon found a life-changing connection.
“My mentor turned out to be one of the most influential people in my life,” she says.
Jaymee’s mentor helped her focus on her strengths, introduced her to 12-step meetings, and modeled healthy ways for Jaymee to express her feelings. She also encouraged Jaymee to pursue her college education and helped her obtain a scholarship provided by a POWER donor.
“My experience with my mentor was nothing short of a blessing,” she says.
With a determination to change her life, Jaymee has remained in recovery. Today, she works at a law firm, has completed her bachelor’s degree and is pursuing a master’s degree in professional counseling. She shares a personal message of hope with those struggling with addiction:
“I didn’t think there was another way to live, but there is. I didn’t think I was strong enough to change my life, but I was.”
Jaymee’s mentor, Carol Ramsey, recently retired after 15 years of service at POWER where she touched the lives of many women in recovery — like Jaymee.

Jaymee’s Story
POWER serves more than 1,300 women in recovery from addiction each year.
POWER’s on the BusIf you ride a PAT bus in Oakland or the east suburbs, chances are you’ll see POWER’s new bus ads, part of an ongoing outreach effort to help more women struggling with addiction. The ads include the POWER Line number which connects callers directly to a POWER intake specialist. They seem to be making an impact already. A recent caller who was struggling with a drug addiction saw the ad and called POWER while she was still on the bus! The ads will be running for the next six months on the East Liberty and West Mifflin routes and at the South Hills Village Station.

Dear Friends,Our staff recently honored me with 25 sunflowers representing the 25 years I’ve served as the Executive Director at POWER. It’s hard for me to believe that so many years have passed as I reflect on the many challenges we’ve faced in combating addiction, including the current opioid epidemic and its devastating effects on families. But I love this work because there are always new signs of hope that reinforce our mission.
When I read the poem by Jasmine, I am inspired by the courage and daily perseverance of women like her who are starting to rebuild their lives after losing everything to addiction. I am renewed by our caring and hard-working staff — many in recovery themselves — who put their own personal struggles aside to help save lives.
We are assisted by a wonderful Board of Directors who understand the changing environment of addiction and ensure that we have the resources available to fight this fight. We also are fortunate for the visionary corporate, civic, and government leaders in Western Pennsylvania who are well-versed on the disease of addiction and support our efforts to make treatment accessible to those who need it the most.
And of course, we couldn’t do it without the hundreds of volunteers and donors like you, who are the foundation of POWER. Your concern for women in recovery makes our work possible and keeps us going. Together, we will continue to make a difference and walk beside women like Jasmine who work so hard each day to fight for a better life for themselves and their families.
Rosa Davis, MSW, ACSW Executive Director

POWER Welcomes Leslie Slagel POWER welcomes Leslie Slagel as our new Clinical Director. Leslie brings extensive experience in the mental health and drug and alcohol addiction fields. She previously served as the Executive Director at Brooktree Health Services Intensive Outpatient Program and as the Clinical Director at Family Resources.
“I’m excited to be at POWER and work with this dedicated staff,” says Leslie. “My foremost goal is to do all I can to ensure that POWER is the provider of choice for women in recovery.”
“Just picture living in the cold and dark, with your insides screaming, being torn apart. All you feel is nothing but pain, so you try to learn to dance in the rain… this time I’ll put up a fight, taking this addiction out of sight.” - Jasmine (former POWER client)

Serving women in recovery since 1991
POWER Promises — A Night of Hope Hits New Record More than 400 guests celebrated women in recovery at POWER Promises — A Night of Hope on May 18 at the Westin Convention Center Hotel, helping to raise more than $200,000 — the largest amount received at a single event at POWER.
The memorable evening included dinner, live and silent auctions, the 2nd Annual POWER of Art Sale, and a special recognition of three POWER graduates. Former U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania David Hickton was presented with the “Seeds of Hope Award” for his role in fighting the opioid epidemic. He was joined on stage by Mayor Bill Peduto and County Executive Rich Fitzgerald and received a touching salute from law enforcement officers in the audience.
Our thanks to Honorary Chair Deborah Rice-Johnson, President of Highmark Health Plan, Emcee Brenda Waters of KDKA-TV, auctioneer Tom Murphy, art curator Jeffrey Jarzynka, and presenters Mark Nordenberg, Chancellor Emeritus at the University of Pittsburgh, Cara Sapida of WPXI-TV, and Sally Wiggin of WTAE-TV.

Future Doctors Visit POWERMedical students from across the country visited POWER this summer as part of IRETA’s (Institute for Research, Education & Training in Addiction) three-week immersion fellowship funded by the Scaife Family Foundation. The innovative program promotes addiction training and awareness to help future doctors recognize the signs of addiction and refer patients to treatment. After a presentation by POWER House Manager Carol Haley-Smith, participants toured the halfway house and had the opportunity to talk with POWER residents.
