Jayan Jose Thomas has completed his Ph.D. in development studies, and has wide research interests in development economics and political economy. He has worked and published papers on the links between industrialization and human development, new technologies and development, issues of labour, Indian economy, and the economy of Kerala. He is currently involved in a project that aims to study the impact of information and communication technologies in India’s rural areas. He was awarded the ‘Young Labour Economist Award’ of the Indian Society of Labour Economics in 2003. He teaches a course on ‘Knowledge Economies’ at the National University of Singapore. His future plans for research include the writing of a book on the association between industrial and social development based on the experience of the Indian State of Kerala; and carrying out a research project on the knowledge economy of India.

‘Sanjay Thakur Young Labour Economist Award’ for the best paper writer below the age of forty in the 45th Annual Labour Economics Conference of the Indian Society of Labour Economics, held in Jadavpur University, Kolkata, 15-17 December 2003.

Details on Ph. D. Thesis:

Title of the thesis: State Policy, Industrial Structure and Industrialization: The Case of Kerala This thesis examined some problems of industrialization and income growth in the Indian State of Kerala. Kerala has attracted international attention for its exceptional achievements in social spheres. In essence, my thesis attempted to explain the paradox of high “human development” achievements and relatively low achievements with respect to industrialization in Kerala.

1. Two-year advanced course work in Economics as part of the requirement for registering for Ph. D., Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research, Mumbai, August 1998 to May 2000

Compulsory courses: Macro Economics, Micro Economics, Econometrics (with a rigorous quantitative approach in each of these courses), Issues in Development Policy, Optimisation Theory, and Energy and Environment. Optional courses: Land and Labour in Rural India, Indian Economy, Time Series Analysis, Mathematical Methods in Economics, and Institutional Economics (audit course). Grade obtained: Cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.23 on a scale with a maximum of 4.

2.
