Our mission is to help families tackle childhood cancer by providing comprehensive financial, emotional and practical support. From diagnosis to recovery and beyond, we are part of the team, allowing parents to solely focus on their child’s well being. Our goal is to BE THERE for parents facing the unthinkable so they can BE THERE for their families.

Coach’s Corner We all know life brings us a variety of struggles, some we see coming some take us by surprise, all put us to the test and we don’t overcome any of them without teamwork and helping each other. When I reflect on the brave children battling cancer or those we have lost to cancer and their families so many stories come to mind. In this newsletter we try to share some of these stories with you and the stories of how we are able to be there for them. Each year at our Champions for Children event we recognize

inspirational individuals committed to our mission. This year is no exception, as we honored two dynamic leaders and had a line-up of players, coaches and distinguished special guests that we applaud for helping us raise a record breaking amount. All who joined us for the event and who help the Jay Fund in so many important ways are champions that kids can count on.

From THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTORWe all have a personal story of our lives and many about our involvement with the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund. Mine started with a family commitment to help at a Golf Tournament and blossomed shortly afterwards with my first opportunity

to interact with families who have a child with cancer, at the Ice Cream Social Event in 1999. The experience ignited a passion for me. I began to get involved on a daily basis and explore additional ways to help these families as they go through a crisis most of us cannot imagine. You are reading this edition of our Blitz newsletter, so you know the important work we are doing at the Jay Fund. You are also reading stories of the many people involved in our team. In an effort to build stronger connections and inspire others to help families tackling childhood cancer we want to share our work in the communities we serve. If you have a community, professional, or recreational group that would be interested in our work we’d welcome the opportunity to further raise awareness by coming to share the story of the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund. Raising our visibility may inspire others to help us provide much needed financial, emotional and practical support for kids with cancer and their families.

the healing gardenThe Healing Garden, dedicated to current and former pediatric cancer patients, is a lovely, tranquil oasis located outside the NY Giants training facility. In 2010, Coach Coughlin, NY Giants players, and a group of patient’s families broke ground on the garden to honor brave children. A dedication plaque reads: “To all the butterflies who have flown away.” Planting new flowers in the garden has become an annual tradition! Special thanks to Paul Imbarratto and Family of Let It Grow, Inc. for making this special place possible.

Champions for childrenThe 9th Annual “Champions for Children Gala” on October 25th at Cipriani in New York City was hosted by Tom Coughlin and recognized two great Champions for Children, John K. Mara, President and CEO of the Giants, and

Frank J. Bisignano, Chief Executive Officer First Data Corporation. Our honorees are inspiring in their daily lives and were particularly eloquent in the words they shared with our capacity crowd. The incomparable WNBC Sports Anchor, Bruce Beck, served as master of ceremonies and pulled off a roll call of 50 celebrity guests who joined us including Eli Manning, Victor Cruz and many more players, coaches and alumni. The energy throughout the evening was absolutely electric and the Jay Fund is truly overjoyed with incredible results, raising $1.25 million to help families in the NY/NJ area who have a child with cancer. Great achievements require a strong and dedicated team, thank you to all who chose to BE THERE!Keli Coughlin Joyce

Jay Fund StoriesPrincess MattiePrecious six-year old “Princess Mattie” was diagnosed with an inoperable brain stem tumor in Feb. 2013. Described as a “girlie girl” and “an angel on earth who thrives to see people happy”, Mattie is adored by all who meet her. She began chemotherapy and radiation treatments immediately after her diagnosis. Tina and Robert, parents of three daughters, each took leaves of absence from their jobs to be with Mattie. The hospital social workers directed them to the Jay Fund for financial assistance. Mom Tina said they “were relieved to know their mortgage and other living costs were taken care of.” Mattie is currently off treatments because the tumor was not responding; but many, many, people, including the Jay Fund, are praying for her and her family. Sadly, the Jay Fund learned just prior to printing, that Mattie passed away November 16, 2013. Our heartfelt condolences to her parents, Rob &Tina, her sisters, Hayli & Millie, and all her loved ones.

Jasmine and Camp Happy Times The Jay Fund is proud to “Be There” by sending 10 NY/NJ pediatric oncology patients to Camp Happy Times.

The camp is held in Ft. Wayne County, PA, where children currently on cancer treatment or in long term follow up can simply have fun in a safe environment. One special camper, Jasmine, has been attending camp for the last 5 years and is looking forward

to becoming a LIT (Leader In Training). Diagnosed with ALL at age 13, she completed 2 1/2 years of treatment and is currently a senior at in high school. After graduation, she not only hopes to attend Montclair State University to study theatrical lighting design, but also wants to open a not-for-profit therapy center for children and teens with cancer. “I do like helping others cope with it. It makes me proud to show others they aren’t alone, just being able to keep their spirits up no matter what the circumstance is.” The Jay Fund wishes Jasmine continued good health and success!

remembrance weekendNo parent chooses to be a part of this group, but the painful reality is that we lose too many of our precious children to cancer. The Jay Fund Remembrance Weekend is an annual event where families who have

lost a child come together to support, heal, and connect. Many of the 30 families have returned year after year to cherish and share the memory of their child while also offering empathetic understanding and support to the other families whose loss was more recent. This year’s theme was “Weaving a Tapestry of Hope” which focused on working through their grief. Dr. Garret Evans, a wonderful motivational speaker and grief counselor, was particularly helpful in his talk to the parents. The Memorial Candlelight Service, where families bravely shared special stories, poems, or readings about their child was a highlight. Tears, laughter, hugs, and support were prominent throughout the weekend. Parent Beth Brommer summed up her experience, “Such a feeling of peace this weekend brings”. Everyone at the Jay Fund feels the Remembrance Weekend is one of the most important ways the Jay Fund helps. We thank Florida Blue for a grant to make it this year’s weekend possible.

Meet TayTwenty-three year old Tay Scheibe reconnected with

Tom and the Jay Fund earlier this year as a delightful volunteer at the 2013 Celebrity Golf Classic. She has battled cancer twice and received a bone marrow transplant, Tay

celebrated eleven years of being cancer-free in October 2012! She was first introduced to the Jay Fund at age 11 where she participated as an artist, creating an item for the Celebrity Golf Classic auction. Currently a junior at Florida State College of Jacksonville, she is the picture of health and loves focusing on nutrition and exercise. She is an inspiration to others, and recently, received two recognition awards, Positively Jax & Top 30 Under 30, for her charitable work in the community.

Jay Fund SPECIAL TeamSThank You to All Our Special Teams! River City Men’s ChorusThe River City Men’s Chorus performed four free concerts this summer where 100% of the proceeds benefited the Jay Fund. This phenomenal effort, led by Director Wayne Bailey, raised over $10,000 as guests contributed through a “Freewill offering” at the end of each concert. Their theme “I carry Your Heart With Me” certainly won our hearts! Sincere thanks to: Wayne Bailey and his talented River City Men’s Chorus; the Forte and Szabados’ families for sharing their stories of how the Jay Fund has lifted some of their burdens since their daughters Elizabeth and Ellie’s cancer diagnosis; the welcoming churches for hosting the concerts and the guests for attending and supporting the Jay Fund.Roscolusa Songwriters Festival Rising Country Music Star Kimberly Paige and her mom Kathy Sullivan recruited a great group of songwriters from Nashville to perform to over 1800 people under the stars at the Roscolusa Songwriters Festival at Nocatee. $2000 was contributed to the Jay Fund!

9/11 Heroes RunThe Jay Fund joined the Travis Manion Foundation, to help them host the third annual 9/11 Heroes Run in Jacksonville, which honors those who “risk their

all”- our soldiers, firefighters, police officers, EMT’s and all those affected by 9/11. The dedication, 5k race and many family friendly activities took place at Creekside High School, where over 300 people ran, walked or

volunteered. The Jay Fund is grateful to the dedicated group from the Travis Manion Foundation and all the participants. As a result of Being There, $2800 was donated to The Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation.

Lemonade StandJack, Cash and Gwen Martin donated their earnings from a lemonade stand to the Jay Fund. Adorable!

The West Morris Central Boys & Girls Lacrosse teams held the 3rd Annual “Boys against Girls” Benefit Event in June at West Morris High School in Long Valley, NJ. Honoring cancer survivor Cara Antonaccio who is now a student at Penn State and Brendt Migliaccio who continues his fight to be cancer free, they raised $2,500 for the Jay Fund! Way To Go Team Wolfpack!

GORUCK LIGHTA slice of Special Operations training was experienced by 32 participants. Jason McCarthy, CEO of GORUCK and retired Green Beret led the participants over 8 miles in six hours performing various military exercises while carrying the American and GORUCK flags - all while smiling and singing “Walking in Sunshine” in unison as they entertained spectators in Neptune Beach. Thanks to GORUCK for donating the revenue from this event which totaled $1700 and to all who pushed themselves to the limit, including Jay Fund dad, Frank Forte. Professional Physical TherapyA group of employees of Professional Physical Therapy, led by Danielle Augustiniak ATC, hosted a gathering at Memos Tapas Sport in NY where a portion of the proceeds benefited the Jay Fund! Tapas were served, prizes were won and $800 was donated to the Jay Fund as a result of this fun evening. Bears NestOne hundred Bears Nests Residents and Guests attended a very special “Evening with Tom Coughlin” in the New Jersey neighborhood to learn about the Jay Fund for this “friend raiser” and as a result, this generous community has donated $3100 to the Jay Fund.Blue Jeans DayEmployees at a division of Deutsche Bank were given permission to wear jeans to work for a week in August if they made a donation to the Jay Fund. Jay Fund volunteer Kayla Sheldon came up with this unique fundraiser at her workplace and as a result $460 was contributed.

Meet Kerry MillerKerry is the NY/NJ Director for the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund, she began in June and has quickly become endeared to all who meet her. Kerry facilitates the day to day operations in the NY/NJ area, including program management and fund development. Prior to staying home to raise her family, Kerry was a commercial banking officer in New York City. Over the years, she has volunteered with many local NJ charities including the Jay Fund. She resides in Glen Rock with her husband Mike and enjoys cheering on their three sons at various sporting events, when not working on her golf game. Kerry’s intuitive, kind and caring spirit is wonderful to be around and the Jay Fund is proud to have her on our team.

“Jersey in the house!” It’s official, the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation now has an office in Hackersack, NJ. Many thanks to Acosta Sales and Marketing for providing us with this space to support our families in the NY/NJ area who are tackling childhood cancer.

Meet The Financial Coach In July 2012, we rolled out our Financial Literacy Program in Jacksonville, affectionately known as the Financial Game Plan. Kathy Devine has been functioning as our Financial

Coach, providing regular financial literacy seminars and one on one consultations with families. She is a Certified Public Accountant with almost 25 years of experience. Kathy is a savvy expert who has worked with 40 families providing detailed practical advice in order to help them develop a long term plan that is personal to their situation. She spends time each Friday at Nemours Children’s Clinic catching up with the social workers and touching base with families for more casual questions. We are proud to provide this much needed and unique resource to our families to help them deal with the financial challenges associated with childhood cancer. The overwhelming positive feedback has inspired us to expand the program to the NY/NJ soon.

2013 Fall Party The Jay Fund’s annual Fall Festival was Sept. 22 at the Jacksonville Zoo. 56 families enjoyed lunch, games, crafts and face painting on the covered terrace. Each family had the afternoon to enjoy all the animal exhibits, play areas and gardens the zoo offers. This party is one of the many ways that the Jay Fund makes these children’s lives brighter. It was wonderful to see the families

being there for each other with emotional support, love and friendship. Many thanks to the Jacksonville Zoo and all the volunteers who made it possible.

Kids Helping Kids Big kudos to 16-year-old John Kramer who earned his Eagle Scout badge after a passionate and successful effort collecting toys for the Jay Fund. John was inspired to collect toys in honor of his sister Olivia’s best friend, Elizabeth Pitts, who lost her long battle with cancer in 2010. The toys now wait in Santa’s Secret Workshop for the Jay Fund’s Children’s Holiday Party.

radiothonThe 6th Annual Radiothon held October 25th on 1010XL Sports Radio in Jacksonville raised a record high of $56,312! Parents of children with cancer, social workers, Tom Coughlin and others spoke with the radio hosts creating awareness of the Jay Fund’s work and it’s importance to the families receiving support. The listeners heard the message and committed to BE THERE in a big way. A huge thank you to everyone at 1010XL, Chris Wayne- our “team captain”, the dedicated volunteers who handled the busy phone lines and all who called in with support.

Nemour’s DedicationNemour’s Children’s Clinic unveiled a recognition piece honoring the Jay Fund for the many years of ongoing partnership with the Pediatric Oncology Program. Tom and Judy Coughlin and the Board of Directors were in attendance for the tribute and presentation made by Dr. Eric Sandler. The beautiful display is located in the waiting area and play room in the Hemotology/Oncology Clinic. We thank Nemours for this kind gesture and hope it will raise awareness of the many services provided by the Jay Fund for the families who have a child with cancer.
