Greenwich University has established a Research Chairfor the purpose of a continued process of doing researchon different aspects of Karachi from its village life devel-oping into a mega city within a span of two hundred years.

The Research will cover the various fields such asDemographic, Rural-Urban Migration, Economy,Education, Healthcare , Urban- Development, Media,Culture and Ethnicity, Civil Administration

Karachi is a unique cosmopolitan city of the world inmany respects. From a small village of 18th century, it de-veloped into a thickly populated cosmopolitan urban eco-nomic giant at the end of the 20th century. Rising in sucha short span of time of 200 years is certainly an amazingtask for many to look into. The depth of research onKarachi in several dimensions could include history, ge-ography, sociology, psychology, economics and ecology. The city was thinly populated at the time of Pakistan’s in-dependence with a mixed population of pluralistic culture, traditions, religious and value systems. It was chosen asCapital of the new country, by the founder of the new na-tion, Muhammad Ali Jinnah who was himself born hereand had his initial education in an Islamic Madrasah of thecity which stands today as a full-fledged university. Itscapital seat made the city expand rapidly and changed it toan established urban economic center. Despite the trans-fer of the Capital to the northern regions of the country, economic interest brought all other interests to Karachiand soon the city emerged as a thickly rising cosmopoli-tan center of the region.

The Karachi Research Chair program aims to stand at thecenter of national research to make Greenwich Universityone of Pakistan’s leading institutions of research and de-velopment on urban issues. The Karachi Chair at the

Greenwich University will promote research excellenceand the application of latest research methods to identifyand address concerns ranging from health, education, migration to cultural/ethnic problems in the city.

The Chair's vision is to develop and institute research andprograms that will provide the maximum possible benefitfor policy makers and administrators in Karachi in orderto alleviate serious deficiencies and narrow the gapbetween demand and delivery of services in Karachi.

The Chair will realize this vision by initiating and sup-porting original and exceptional research related to thesocio-economic, cultural, and historical issues in the Cityof Karachi; and by conducting studies to identify and de-velop appropriate strategies and methods to adapt themfor the particular application within the city

The Karachi Research Chair, seeks to play a leading rolein increasing knowledge and awareness about the social, cultural and economic issues in the city of Karachi. TheChair will accomplish this by conducting extensive re-search and by developing partnerships at the public andprivate levels in order to facilitate the exchange of ideasand dissemination of research to bridge the gap betweenidentification and application of solutions to the city’sproblems. The looming threats of rural-urban migration, growing demand on limited resources, climate change, and deteriorating law and order in the city have made itvital that all efforts be made to identify practical solutionsfor these issues. The methods and issues pursued by theChair will also provide a nucleus for training a cadre ofresearchers from our country's graduate students and pro-duce a body of research of a quality commensurate withthose of other research centers around the world.

Ms Sabeeen Agha, Faculty member, Department of MassCommunications and Media Studies arranged a GuestSpeaker session for her Course. A British Journalist andDocumentary Film Presenter Mr. Peter Oborne was in-vited to share his experiences with the students.

Mr. Oborne is chief political commentator of the DailyTelegraph and has presented 22 documentaries, for UKbased Channel, too. Oborne has made two documentariesin Pakistan; “After the Floods” and “Defenders ofKarachi”, for the same channel. He recently authored abook on the magisterial history of Pakistani Cricket, called“Wounded Tiger: A History of Cricket in Pakistan”.

Talking about the media in Pakistan, Mr. Oborne said that“The freedom to inform is very important. In countrieslike Pakistan, despite the fact, that the work of a journal-ist can be so difficult due to many reasons, I still thinkmedia in Pakistan is playing a vibrant role. It is due to the

same fact that Pakistani journalists, despite encounteringthreats, are driven by determination that they have a re-sponsibility to inform the public. They know that it is theright of the society to know at stake, if they succumb to thepressures and threats. They genuinely believe that truth isvaluable”.

Mr. Oborne discussed in length, about the role of westernmedia in covering issues relating to Iraq, Syria,Afghanistan and Pakistan. “It is indeed, ironic to see thebiased approach with, which the western media approachan issue in this part of the world. It was appalling to watchthem only highlighting the killings of western journalistsin Syria, and ignoring the fact that more local journalistshave been targeted and killed there. It is this visible linethat they draw when it comes to covering such issues. Forthem, clearly it appears that the life of a western journal-ist is more valuable than the life of a local journalist. Thefocus should be on highlighting the danger reporters’ facein covering conflict zones”, were the remarks made by Mr.Oborne. Responding to a question about western public torelate more closely to the one from their own; in this casea western journalist, Mr. Oborne was of the view that itwas true when one can attach a recognizable name andface to a story, it becomes more relatable. However, ob-jectivity and fairness is the key to accurate journalism”.

Mr. Oborne also talked about the role of investigativejournalism and its importance for continuation of democ-racy. He shared his experience of working on documen-taries in Pakistan on the issues of the Osama Bin LadenSaga, aftermath of floods and the violence in Karachi.

Mr. Oborne urged the students to overcome the obstaclesand continue with the dreams and passion that will ulti-mately see the light of the day.

Greenwich University (GU): Could you please en-lighten us about yourself?

Jawad Amin (JA): I did my bachelors in Operation Man-agement and International Business. I joined Greenwich, then went to America. On my return I did my Mastersfrom Greenwich in Marketing. Later, I joined my familybusiness. Now, I am the Managing Director of ZafaPharmaceutical.

(GU): What is the vision and mission of Zafa pharma-ceutical?

(JA):We firmly believe in the theory of "MEDICINESFOR ALL", which plays a key role in setting up theprices of our new products’ introductions in the market. Our motto is "nobody should suffer from want ofmedication."

I took over this company in 1992 and there was only onemission, to continue with my family’s tradition. Wesupply cheap and affordable medicines so that it can beobtained by all classes. There should not be somethingwhich is limited for the well- to- do but everyone fromall sectors of society should have access to qualitymedicines

(GU): Do you try to keep the prices as minimum aspossible?

(JA): Our prime mission is to provide quality medicinesto all population and currently working on more than 400products. We manufacture, we are ensuring that everyoneshould have access to quality medicine, with minimumprice.

(GU): How do you involve and motivate your staffwhen an important strategic decision is needed to bemade?

(JA): We firmly believe that only professional people canrun a progressive organization and implement its beliefsand philosophies. Our employees are one of our most im-portant assets and carefully tailored training programs arerun round the year for updating their knowledge and skills.

(GU): How do you manage your personal and profes-sional life?

(JA): In business one cannot afford to manage his or herpersonal life. You have to dedicate yourself for the thingsyou believe in the most. I am the second generation run-ning this business and even the third is about to be ready. What I can say that one generation can make any businessand one can also destroy a business. I have committed my-self to my business as I want it to flourish more and more.

I think the academic qualificationsget you to the interview table. Itteaches you how much confidenceyou have. For me, as working foraround 20 years, one gets a gut

feeling or a view whether to go forthat person or not. Also just foryour information, I give priority toGreenwich University students foremployment in my company. Be-cause I believe Greenwich studentsare not very bookish as they aretaught lot of case studies and

practical strategies which help toraise students’ confidence moreand more. Greenwich studentsshow much more openness and willingness of working. The Greenwich University students are employed everywhere be itmedia or banking sector.

(GU): So, is your professional life more important thanfamily life?

(JA): No, you do find the balance somewhere; you do findtime as there are some special moments which are for thefamily. However, if there is commitment to work I givepriority to my work as it is for the sake of family. I per-sonally believe that I perform much better here and I cando much more for my family in the long term through mycommitment to the business. But all these commitmentsare not possible if your family doesn’t support you also.

(GU): What skills are required to manage the busi-ness?

(JA): Entrepreneurs are always born entrepreneurs.Everyone is born with some skills or another, every one ofus knows if we are made to be a manager or to be an en-trepreneur. To be an entrepreneur you have to be a risktaker. We have a lot of people around who have a lot ofmoney. However; you should know the definition of tak-ing risk. Without taking any risk you cannot call yourselfan entrepreneur. The first and foremost important thing isto believe in yourself and never give up!

(GU): Is there any risk that you regret taking?

(JA): No. I have never lost. We are presently ranked at #2(we sell above 60 million unit packs per annum) in Pak-istan as per Unit Wise sales and are operating with Nine(9) manufacturing facilities, with two (2) to be commis-sioned soon.

We have got around 13 plants in Pakistan and one plant inAfrica. Out of them six are requisitions. These were thecompanies which were in loss and I had a belief that I willbring them up so I did it. So, in 1992, we had around 200people in the company and now we employ 5600 peoplein Pakistan with another 627 people working for us aroundthe world.

(GU): What others ventures do you have besidesPharmaceuticals?

(JA): We are working in Pharmaceuticals, oil and phar-maceuticals supplies and packaging. We also go for nichemarkets.

(GU): Do you have further plans to expand your workmore?

(JA): I believe in Pakistan and I believe in myself andInshaAllah I am going to expand.

GU: How was your experience at GreenwichUniversity?

(JA): Oh! It was good. The time I had spent there is un-forgettable. Greenwich University had trimmed my skills. The management tried their best to make schedules easyand go out of the way to help us. The next best thing aboutGreenwich is the socio-economic and cultural diversity.

(GU): How many years have you spent there?

(JA): I finished my Masters in 1994, I did my O’level andat that time O’level was equal to American High SchoolIts almost twenty years ago when I was at Greenwich Uni-versity. I have seen all the phases of development inGreenwich when we were in Khayaban-e-Mujahid andthen the present campus. I believe all of you are blessedwith having Mrs. Seema Mughal as the Vice Chancellor. The kind of commitment Mr. Saeed Mughal and Mrs.Seema Mughal have towards students. it cannot be ig-nored and the kind of moral support that they give to stu-dents other Universities usually don’t facilitate this much.I believe that your family brings you at the right track andalso the people at your university. So, I thank a lot to myparents and my spiritual parents Mr. Saeed Mughal andMS. Seema Mughal for keeping me on right track.

(GU): Have you visited Greenwich recently?

(JA): I visited Greenwich University last year. As always,it gave me a profound feeling. The environment was veryimpressive and the management as coorporative as ever.I had visited for someone’s admission who was financiallyweak. He was later on given a discount by the respectableVice Chancellor

(GU): Is it necessary for a person to have a good aca-demic profile before applying for a job in Zafa Phar-maceuticals?

(JA): I think the academic qualifications get you to the in-terview table. It teaches you how much confidence youhave. For me, as working for around 20 years, one gets agut feeling or a view whether to go for that person or not. Also just for your information, I give priority to Green-wich University students for employment in my company.Because I believe Greenwich students are not very book-ish as they are taught lot of case studies and practicalstrategies which help to raise students’ confidence moreand more. Greenwich students show much more opennessand willingness of working. The Greenwich Universitystudents are employed everywhere be it media or bankingsector

(GU): You said that you have one office in SouthAfrica so you are working globally, would you callyourself a multinational company?

(JA):We are the first and only Pakistan based pharma-ceutical multinational company

(GU): What do you think people say Pakistan has nogood jobs and they are trying to go abroad and makemoney there?

(JA): People are going abroad not because they have op-portunities there but the reason behind is the insecurity. Ifyou find a job in Dubai and Middle East you almost getthe same salary package there too but at least you feel safebut in developing world there is much more potential. Butthe growth, both personal growth and financial growth, isin the developing world. Why would Americans come andinvest in Pakistan? Why I am staying in Africa and Sudan?Because I can see growth, I can do better than them. Lotsof people are going because of safety issues and if you canmanage so lots of problems can be solved.

(GU): Mostly all your operations are being done inPakistan. Do you feel or have any kind of insecurities?

JA: The kind of insecurity we face in Pakistan is only thesecurity issue. Otherwise, Pakistan is one the best placesfor any business man. As it is a developing country, thereis a lot of progress that can take place.

(GU):What is your message for Greenwich Universitystudents?

(JA): Believe in yourself and don’t give up. When youstart something you just believe that you will make it hap-pen and you will be successful. The moment you give upyou lose everything and the moment you stop growing itis the moment when you die.

“Pakistani film can opt for aslow and steady approach towards storytelling”

Zeba Bhakhtiar & Jami visit Greenwich University as GuestSpeakers.

It was a great pleasure for media students of GreenwichUniversity to invite Zeba Bakhtiar and Jami as guestspeakers on Wednesday, November 19, 2014, after therelease of 021. The film Producer Zeba Bakhtiar and di-rector Jami of 021 spoke of this venture.

The film, 021 or Operation 21 is of a spy thriller genre. Itis the first of its kind to be made in Pakistan. After 30

years of war in Afghanistan, Abdullah, played by AyubKhoso, wants to save his country from another 50 yearsof corporate warfare. And the plot continues.

Zeba Bakhtiar and Jami, at Greenwich University, talkingabout 021 wanted people of Pakistan and the rest of theworld to understand that we lack nowhere. In such condi-tions Pakistani cinema is surviving rather growing. “Wehave creativity, drive, passion for every kind of work here

and it has started coming on the forefront”. They addedthat the film should be watched at least once to understandthat Pakistani film can opt for a slow and steady approachtowards storytelling.

Jami also emphasized that the film is nothing like Waar(film) which was released last year, with people thinkingthat O21 is following its footsteps.

Jami who has been producing advertisements and musicvideos has debuted in film direction with O21. “I think itwas easier for me to make the transition since it’s moredifficult to work on a short narrative”, expressed Jami.Furthermore, talking about songs he said, there is no suchthing in the film; it’s serious, emotional and thought-provoking for people.

It was indeed a pleasure to have Zeba Bakhtiar and Jamito address the students, staff and faculty about their lifeexperience and the making of the film.

was a part of our final project of the Creativity and Inno-vation class. The trip consists of the eleven students underthe leadership of the dean Dr. Sultan Mughal and the triplasted for eleven days (October 21-November 1, 2014).The purpose of the visit was to experience Thailand asparts of the case- study to learn how the country has beenable to blend its diverse and rich culture, history, topog-raphy and natural beauty to become one of the majortourist destinations of the world. We made a detail studyof how Thailand is marketed all of over the world and howa tourist feels and experiences the country with its diverseofferings.

The trip covered our experiences in the two major cities ofThailand and we were able to appreciate what Thailandoffers as an emerging economy based on our first-handexperiences. We travelled the country from the west coastin Phuket to the capital of Thailand Bangkok which is alsoknown as the central tourist destination for Asia. The world of compassion and care brought the youth ofGreenwich University with the Student DevelopmentCouncil happily carrying their pets streaming in one afterthe other, showing off their charge. Youth with their petsare pride of performance: Exploring the relationships be-tween pet ownership, pet attitudes, attachment to pets andempathy that each has for the other. Animals play thera-peutic roles in people's lives. Many children around theworld grow- up in households and live with companionanimals.

It was December 30, 2014. Saad Shafiq, Treasurer SDCwith his student group volunteers, threw into gear the petshow. On campus were peacocks strutting around, ducksand geese waddling, cats and dogs, monkeys stringing

around, birds &parrots tweeting & chirping, rabbits andmice. Pythons as star picture performers. Then a camelgiving rides to squealing youth.

The highlight of the evening was the turtle race wherethree races took place between turtles of different sizesand species. The races saw students wagering on differ-ent numbers as winners. It was slow and steady but enter-taining.

There were prizes for the winners and soon after the catswere judged were the mixed breed dogs. The dogs whichwere the largest in number were categorized and judgedby Ms. Nasreen Khan, a devoted dog breeder from theKennel Club of Pakistan.

The most common family pets are dogs, cats, rabbits, caged birds and fish. Research by Kidd and Kidd (1985)found that 99.3% of 3 to 13 year-olds reported that theywanted a pet and 57% had a preference for dogs over otherspecies. Children often consider pets to be members oftheir family.

Pet ownership confers a range of potential benefits forchildren's development (Melson, 2001). In a large researchon children and animals was synthesized into three over-arching themes. The first theme concerns children's un-derstanding of animals. Rooted in theories of cognitivedevelopment this work reveals developmental changes inchildren's naïve understanding of biology and the impor-tance of direct experience, including pet care, for learningabout biology

Research on children's attitudes towards animals’ forms asecond major theme. This research explores individual dif-ferences in attitudes towards pets, the factors that lead topositive attitudes and also the relationship between atti-tudes and behavior towards animals (a key concern for an-imal welfare). Much of this literature has focused onadults including retrospective accounts of their childhoodexperience of companion animals (e.g.,. Moreover, chil-dren who grow up in households with pets have beenfound to have more favorable attitudes to animals as

adults. This in turn could enhance positive interactionswith animals.

A third, theme to emerge from the research that focuses onthe emotional attachments children form to key animalsin their lives and the consequences of these for socio emo-tional development. Davis and Juhaz (1995) suggest thatchildren perceive the family pet as providing them withempathic and complementary friendship.

Pet stores also displayed rare birds, fowl and chimp whichremained a rare treat for family, siblings and friends.

January 16, 2015 The Herald Forum with Greenwich Uni-versity brought under discussion the topic Deradicalisingeducation: Can tolerance be forcefully taught?

The discussion was moderated by Dr. Nomanul Haq withMr Sami Mustafa from CAS School Systems in Karachiand Dr. Faisal Bari in Lahore on skype as participants tak-ing on questions and answers.

Mr. Badar Alam editor Herald introduced the topic andthe guests.

The topics steered from the factual situation of the poorlyadministered academic turnout of madrassas, publicschool systems and even many private schools.

The remedy to find solutions was a suggestion of havingall government servants , politicians, bureaucrats, armedforces – have their children go to public school systemswhich will upgrade the school’s academic system to a bet-ter standard also giving equal opportunities to the lowermiddle and poorer class of people.

Students from IBA, LUMS, Habib University and Green-wich University asked questions which steered the dis-cussion from facts to finding solutions. Students fromcommunication classes were given certificates of partici-pation for being part of the communicative discussion.

Assistant Professor Tahira Khan gave her concludingremarks saying that we must invoke in our youth the con-fidence to think critically and inquire while on the otherhand all people in the teaching capacity with the “ holierthan thou” attitude of know it all, should bow down to thefact that there is always another facet to the thinking “ I”maintain.

Mr Zafar Iqbal Saifi gave away the shields to the panel ofspeakers.

This is the Rapid Fire news anchor reporting live from TheGreenwich Auditorium where the audience was takenhostage earlier today by the police, drug lords, gangs, cor-rupt officials and politicians- raging and ranting. The help-less spectators remained riveted to their seats as theygasped and gripped to take in the onslaught. The verbal, physical and moral attacks continued with all being forcedto digest the daring drama and decide their and their coun-try’s fate. These tense, trying and troublesome scenes re-mained in front of the eyes for 90 minutes till the newschannels reached the site and awakened the politiciansinto putting forth their comments which included Mr.Altaf Hussain (infamous as Altaf bhai), Nawaz Shareef(welcomed with Go Nawaz Go slogans) and the delight-ful dame Shirin Rehman. They pacified and persuaded thevictims of their honesty, helpfulness and high handednesswith dealing with such scenes. And they truly succeededin convincing the shocked onlookers that Pakistan wouldcertainly be doomed and in the doldrums without theirsongs, slogans and slapstick humor.

Yes, readers this is just a peek of what took place on theJanuary 16, 2015 in Greenwich University during the roleplay performances of English Composition students underthe supervision of their instructor Ms. Shehla PirachaImran. It was as if a Pandora box had been unlocked withthe scenes streaming snaking their way through the minds

and hearts of the audience. With a range of themes pur-posely picked to project the pertinent problems of our so-ciety and perhaps to propagate a proper end to it all. Alas, wishful thinking. From the street vendor to the seethinggun tots to the suspicious handlers to the outspoken an-chor persons all the action and the awe was part of the sen-sationalism created by the young, aspiring Greenwichians. The attire, attitude and angles were all inclined to woo theviewers which took them on an unforgettable ride.

Script-writing was also a feature of the role plays hence, part of the learning process. The teaching methodologyhas always reflected and reinforced a pragmatic approachbecause where’s the fun in just laying the course contentout in front when there’s much more enthusiasm and ex-citement in a hands on experience. Surely, then the con-cepts are embedded and emulated to express onesingenuity that’s where originality and uniqueness lie.

The showdown was there with the fireworks of people andpolitically geared agendas in conflict with each other andnaming the winners as none other than our experiencedpolitical figures. Parallel to this was the remarkableachievement of the Business Report Writing Course stu-dents who had produced 2000-word reports focusing onthe print media. This deems equal applaud and apprecia-tion. Conducting surveys, framing questionnaires and tak-

The day was truly held hostage by the reporters, recordersand the reality re enforcement agents. All done to makeus realize the raging waters our nation is being rocked by.In the wake of the inhumane attack on our educational sys-tem in Peshawar this event was just apt in changing ourlens to view the situation clearly.
