VETERANS POSTby Freddy Groves

Caregiver Help Delayed

The Caregivers and Veterans Omnibus Health Services Act was signed in May 2010 to give much more assistance to the caregivers of wounded post-9/11 veterans. The program was to be fully up and running by the end of January 2011.Included in the bill was a monthly stipend equal to the cost of home health assistance, mental health support, training, respite and health insurance for the caregiver. The goal of the act was to keep wounded veterans at home and out of care facilities. Now the January deadline has passed and all of the program isn’t in place yet. Two weeks after it was to be fully operational, a Department of Veterans Affairs contingent went to Congress with a plan in hand to get it going. They issued a press release that says, in part, “Many of the other significant newly enacted benefits will require the issuance of regulations. ... The law requires detailed regulations for determining eligibility, designating and approving caregivers ... .”The VA wants to approve the caregivers who have already been doing the work, without any help, many giving up their jobs and health insurance? One major disappointment is that only 10 percent of the seriously wounded are covered -- a mere 800 veterans. There is a bit of help now: the VA’s toll-free Caregiver Support Line at 1-855-260-3274.Go to www.caregiver.va.gov and look around. You’ll find information on home equipment and modifications, caregiver resources and contacts. If nothing else, click on VA Caregiver Services and scroll through the services. Ask the support coordinator which ones you can get now.Bookmark the site and check it frequently. That’s where you’ll discover what parts of the program have been activated and which services are available. Or talk to a social worker at your VA medical center.Write to Freddy Groves in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box

Fort Wayne area death rate in question

Does anyone really know the death rate in Fort Wayne? Think about it. The answer is very easy to

calculate.

All you have to do is ask yourself if you know anyone around you who will not eventually die someday in the future. Of course, no one has figured out a way to stay alive forever so this means the death rate in the Fort Wayne area is 100%. Always has been and always will be. We don’t know when it will happen. We only know that our time on this Earth is limited. Eventually our hearts will stop beating and

we’ll be gone forever.

We all try our best to avoid thinking about death. It’s never pleasant. It’s never happy. However, it’s

going to happen to us all someday.

OK. So now we know the death rate in Fort Wayne is 100%. Here are the more important questions:

1) What will we do when someone in our family

dies?2)How will our loved ones handle our own death?

It’s OK to think about it --- How many of us really

don’t know what to do when a family member dies?

There are many decisions to be made. It’s one of life’s major events. We hate to compare funerals to weddings but they are both major lifetime events that involve family and close friends. How many weddings take place within a couple of days of an engagement? Most people take months to finalize wedding arrangements. That way they can have

what they want at a price they can afford.

For some reason, most people want to wait until a death occurs to begin planning a funeral. This can lead to some poor decisions and costly mistakes.

“ We see it happen every day,” said John

Thompson, owner of the Midwest Funeral Home and Cremation Society in Fort Wayne. “ “People haven’t even thought about it until the day the

death happens.”

“Many times people are calling the larger funeral homes because they don’t know about the alternative options,” Thompson said. “I opened Midwest Funeral Home and Cremation Society in Fort Wayne three years ago to provide families with a choice for a more economical funeral service. Because we are locally owned and operated we can make business decisions based on quality not

just profitability.”

Most people are in such a crisis when a death occurs. They don’t have the time or energy to compare prices. “I’m pretty sure people always compare costs when they are planning a wedding though,” Thompson said. “Because we’re a local business with a small overhead, we can perform high quality funeral services at a very reasonable costs...way less than the larger funeral companies.”

Midwest Funeral Home and Cremation Society

can provide its’ clients with all the same options that are available at the larger chain funeral homes for significantly less expense. “ We are a full service funeral company,” Thompson said.”Our menu of services includes international transportation, caskets, monuments, floral arrangements, and all the other merchandise associated with a funeral service. We work with our clients to secure Veterans benefits, Medicaid, Social Security and anything else that can help defer expenses.” Midwest performs all cremations in its’ own on site

crematory Midwest also helps people every day with funeral

pre-planinng. “People need to know they can have their funerals paid for in advance for as little as $25 per month,” Thompson said. “It’s a smart investment to save your loved ones money and make certain they know what to do when you die.”

Midwest Funeral Home and Cremation Society is located

just 1/2 block from West Coliseum Blvd at 4602 Newaygo Road in Fort Wayne. Funeral professionals are available 24 hours a day and seven days a week by calling 260-496-9600 to assist families with the loss of a loved one. You may speak with John Thompson personally by calling 260-496-9600 during normal business hours. Questions regarding funerals and cremations will always

be answered promptly and professionally. For more detailed information please visit
