TELLING TIME IN SPANISH

• In order to ask what time it is in Spanish, you say “¿Qué hora es?”, or literally, “What hour is it?”.

“WHAT TIME IS IT?”

• The one o’clock hour is different than the other hours because it’s singular. So, you say “es la una” for one o’clock.

The Last Half of the Hour

Using Menos From the half hour to the end of the hour you use menos.

Menos mean minus in English. To use menos in telling time you go

to the closest hour and subtract however many minutes are between the two. Ex.--- For 6:52 the hour would be 7

(siete) and then there are 8 (ocho) minutes between 7 o’clock and 6:52 and so the time would be 7 (siete) minus (menos) 8 (ocho).

The time from the half hour to the end of

the hour are written in a specific form. It is always # menos # Ex.---- ocho menos cinco 7:55

Form

The form is # menos # but before that comes son las or es la. In this sense telling time for the last half of

the hour is the same as for the first half. Son las comes before when it is the last

half of the hour for any hour between 1:30 and 12:30. Son las tres menos quice. (2:45)

Es la is used when it is between 12:30 and 1:00. Es la una menos nueve. (12:51)

Son Las and Es La

6:46 Son las siete menos

catorce 12:55

Es la una menos cinco Son las cuatro menos

veintiocho. 3:32

Son las once menos diecisiete. 10:43
