About Rup 1 bn has been invested in this project and when fully operational, it will provide about 300 direct and indirect jobs. The new plant is located on a 3.6 hectares site within the Kinfra Apparel Industrial Park in Thiruvananthapuram (aka Trivandrum), the capital city of Kerala province. Initially, crude kaolin will be derived from Ashapura’s Mullaserri mine, but this may be supplemented in due course by material from the Saathavattam deposit. Asian Ceramics, Jun 2008, 55 India: Balamurugan Chemicals & Beach Minerals – TiO 2 Balamurugan Chemicals is planning to invest Rup 850 M (just over $19 M) to build a 15,000 tonnes/y sulfate- route TiO 2 plant at Tuticorin (Tamil Nadu province). As by-products, the plant will also produce 36,000 tonnes/y of ferrous sulfate heptahydrate; 48,000 tonnes/y of hydrated magnesium sulfate; 7500 tonnes/y of carbon dioxide; and 7500 tonnes/y of iron oxide pigments. Ilmenite feedstock will be provided by Beach Minerals Co (BMC), which currently produces over 60,000 tonnes/y of ilmenite in association with its garnet mining operations in the Kuttam district of Tamil Nadu. Beach Minerals is an affiliate of Balamurugan Chemicals, both companies being controlled by the Sukumar family. A public hearing on the environmental aspects of the project was convened by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board in mid-August, at which concerns were raised about water supply and effluent disposal. This follows Kiri’s move last October to establish a joint venture with the Zhejiang Longsheng group (of China) at Ahmedebad, also in Gujarat province. (See ‘Focus on Pigments’, Jan 2008, 5). At present, its export activity is essentially limited to Sri Lanka, but onwards from 2009 the company is keen to export to European markets. Resorcinol is also used for making UV absorbers, pharmaceuticals and formaldeyhde/resorcinol resins for the rubber and timber industries. The company has outlined a project to raise its capacity from 20,000 tonnes/y to 30,000 tonnes/y by building a new unit at an unidentified location in Japan. The company has secured mining rights for 30 years on a nearby limestone deposit, which is believed to contain 40 M tonnes. Depending on market uptake, Al-Ahlia may set up a second production line at the Al-Hasa plant for start-up in 2010. Jordan Minerals and Jordan Carbonate are already producing GCC elsewhere in the country.
