southwestern China. CSRC has budgeted Rmb 500 M for this project, which should be completed by May 2011. One of the major customers for CSRC’s carbon black will be ChengShin Rubber Industry Co Ltd (another company headquartered in Taiwan), which is currently building a new factory for making 10 M units/y of radial tyres, also on the Changshou Yanjia estate. CSRC already has two carbon black plants in Mainland China – a 125,000 tonnes/y plant at Ma’anshan (Anhui province, 60 km southwest of Nanjing) and a 70,000 tonnes/y plant at Anshan (Liaoning province, 115 km southwest of Shenyang). The company’s medium-term objective is to raise its carbon black capacity in China to 900,000 tonnes/y by 2015. Elsewhere in Asia, CSRC has a 120,000 tonnes/y plant at LinYuan (Taiwan). CSRC also has a majority stake in Continental Carbon India Ltd (CCIL), which operates a 65,000 tonnes/y plant at Ghaziabad (25 km east of New Delhi, India). CCIL is planning to establish a 450,000 tonnes/y plant at Vizakhapatnam on the northeastern coast of India within the next five years. (See ‘Focus on Pigments’, Aug 2010, 6). China Chemical Reporter, 6 Aug 2010, 21 (15), 9 China: Handan & Jiangxi Black Cat – carbon black Handan Black Cat Co was established in April 2010 as a joint venture company, in which Jiangxi Black Cat Co has a 75% shareholding. The ownership of the other 25% of the equity in Handan Black Cat has not been revealed. With a capital injection of Rmb 450 M from Jiangxi Black Cat, a 160,000 tonnes/y carbon black is going to be built at Handan (Hebei province, 175 km south of the provincial capital, Shijiazhuang). Jiangxi Black Cat is one of the top three carbon black producers in China, alongside CSRC and Cabot. It already has four carbon black plants – at Jingdezhen (Jiangxi province); Hancheng (Shaanxi province); Chaoyang (Liaoning province); and Wuhai (Inner Mongolia province). The company is nearing completion of a project to install a fourth 40,000 tonnes/y production line at Wuhai, which will raise its total carbon black capacity to 420,000 tonnes/y. (See ‘Focus on Pigments’, Feb 2010, 4). China Chemical Reporter, 6 Aug 2010, 21 (15), 11 India: Huber – precipitated silica Huber Engineered Materials (HEM, headquartered at Atlanta, GA) plans to more than double its capacity for precipitated silica at Jhagadia (90 km south of Vadodara/Baroda in Gujarat province). When the project is completed in early 2012, the Jhagadia plant will be able to produce up to 33,000 tonnes/y of silica. Huber markets silica and silicates from Jhagadia to manufacturers of toothpaste, paint and paper. Mr Chuck Herak (Vice President & General Manager of the Silica business unit) said: “With the successful start-up of our newest silica plant at Qingdao, China (See ‘Focus on Pigments’, Aug 2009, 5), we can now focus our expansion efforts on this new project in India.” Chemical and Engineering News, 2 Aug 2010, 88 (31), 25 (Website: http://www.cen-online.org) India: Omya & Tamil Nadu Newsprint & Papers – PCC Tamil Nadu Newsprint & Papers Ltd (TNNP) and Omya International have agreed to jointly build, own and operate a 60,000 tonnes/y precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) plant, scheduled to come on-stream by December 2011. The plant will be located at Karur (Tamil Nadu province, about 300 km south of Bengalaru, aka Bangalore). Chemical Engineering World, Jul 2010, 45 (7), 91 Japan: Hayashi – talc Hayashi Kasei is poised to start-up a new facility for processing 20,000 tonnes/y of Indian talc at its Hashimoto site in Wakayama prefecture, 50 km south of Osaka. The unit cost Yen 800 M to build and the crude talc feedstock will be supplied by Golcha under a long-term contract. The finished talc product will be mainly used to make talc-filled polymers suitable for automotive applications. This new facility will raise Hayashi’s total talc processing capacity at Hashimoto to 30,000 tonnes/y. Hitherto, most of Japan’s imported talc has come from Chinese sources, but Hayashi believes that Golcha can offer better stability of supply and higher quality material. Japan Chemical Web, 11 Aug 2010, (Website: http://www.japanchemicalweb.jp) Japan: Sumitomo – resorcinol Sumitomo Chemical recently brought on-stream a new resorcinol plant at Oita (on the southern island of Kyushu). Together with the existing plant at Chiba (50 km east of Tokyo), Sumitomo Chemical now has the capability to produce up to 30,000 tonnes/y of resorcinol. The company claims to be the lowest cost resorcinol producer in the world, with a global market share in excess of 50%. Resorcinol is an important intermediate in the manufacture of a number of products, including various ultraviolet absorbers, dyes and colorants, including oxidative colorants used in hair-care treatments.
