How imperialism happened in Japan

• Japanese wanted to modernize Korea so they factories, railroads, and communication systems. These developments generally benefited Japan. For example Korea was producing more rice than ever, but most of the rice went to Japan.

• Japan continued to expand throughout eastern Asia looking for resources and territory. In the early 1900s Japan was the strongest power in Asia.

Why were other countries interested in Japan?

• In 1853 a fleet of well armed American ships led by Matthew Perry sailed into Japan and demanded that Japan open its ports diplomatic and commercial exchange.

• Many other countries were interested in Japan because it had many ports that allow good trade.

• Japan didn’t have many of the resources that are important for industrial growth. It depended on other countries for these resources. They did not like having to depend on other countries for resources.

Japan is an island so it had many good trading ports.

Japan did not have many resources. The good trade ports helped them acquire them.

How were the natives affected?

• The Japanese were embarrassed by all these unequal treaties. Japanese citizens were not pleased that the shogun did not fight back. In 1867 unhappy citizens revolted against the shogun.

• The emperor Meiji issued the constitution Meiji which like the German system stated that all citizens are equal before the law. However, unlike the German system, the emperor has absolute power.

• By the 1890s industry was strong and population grew from peasants coming to the large cities looking for employment. The constitution ended social classes thus allowing more people to help build the nation

• Meiji ruled from 1868-1912 in a period known as the Meiji Restoration. Meiji and his reformers’ motto was “a rich country, a strong military”.

• In 1853 a fleet of well armed American ships led by Matthew Perry sailed into Japan and demanded that Japan open its ports diplomatic and commercial exchange.

• In 1603 the Tokugawa family seized power in Japan. The Tokugawa shoguns re-imposed centralized feudalism, closed Japan to foreigners, and forbade Japanese people to travel oversees.

Important Places

• In 1876 Japan used its power to force Korea to open its ports to Japanese ships for trade. Korea was also facing demands from western powers and was forced to accept unequal treaties.

• China and Russia were important to Japanese development because they used their western ideas on Japan.

• The west was the most influential place on Japan because that is what they based all of their idea off of.

• In 1867 unhappy citizens revolted against the shogun. • In 1871 people from the government traveled west to learn

about governments, economy, technology, and customs. They brought experts back and sent young samurai to the west. This improved the Japanese knowledge of the west’s industrial techniques.

• By the 1890s industry was strong and population grew from peasants coming to the large cities looking for employment.
