We all know that the holy Grail of our business is gaining new clients. That being said, the
bummer is that as an industry we only retain 1/3 of our new clients and 2/3 we never see again. Here is a simple list of how you could flip these results to your advantage:
1 NEW CLIENT WELCOME KIT These can range from exotic bags
to simple paper handouts. Use your creativity in creating your own. It can include: samples of products, return promotional offers to lock them in for follow up visits, welcome letter, press or exciting info about the salon...have fun and make it exciting for the new guest.
2 RETURN BLOWOUT New clients all get a free blowout
to be redeemed within 2 weeks of the initial visit. It’s a great gift for the client, but also an opportunity for the stylist to connect with them again and trouble shoot any issues they may have with the service. In short, get them back in your chair!
3 THANK YOU’S Simple, yet overlooked. Best done
as a personal written note or phone call. Yes, it’s a pain. But think of the long-term value of a new client. It’s definitely worth it.
4 THE CONSULTATION This might seem obvious, but most
new clients are locked in or lost prior to the service beginning. The consultation is everything. If you haven’t had a class or training on a killer consultation, it’s probably a wise thing to do so. Ask us, we can help connect you with a consultation class. Best practices include: killer open-end questions, using self-curated images, summarize the conversation prior to suggesting a plan, offer options when you do suggest a course of action and getting their permission/approval before starting the service. Lastly, insert your technical knowledge and expertise throughout. This is your time to show them you’re a true expert.
5 TRACK NEW CLIENT RETENTION If something is important to
you, it should be measured. This is because anything measured is 1000% (I know, that’s not a real number) more likely to get improved. The first and most important step in improving something is diagnosing the scale of the problem. Tracking will Achieve this.

Winter weather is notorious for creating static, split ends, and dry hair. Naturally, we
do all we can to counteract the side effects by indulging in weekly masks, wearing more protective hairstyles and hats, and not washing our hair as much, but we all know what that does to our scalp. Soon enough, you’ll have clients commenting on their itchy scalp, dryness, and flaky dandruff.
Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. Offer a service for scalp buildup during the winter and give your clients’ scalps some extra TLC this winter; they won’t believe how much gunk accumulates on there. Scalp treatments eliminate the dry skin and buildup in a quick and easy way. It’s an underestimated service but one that provides many visible benefits—your clients won’t be overlooking this ever again!
10-MINUTE SCALP TREATMENTSTEP 1:Brush dry, dead skin from the scalp in small, short strokes with a boar bristle teasing brush (softer than a comb).
STEP 2:Brush Davines NaturalTech Calming Superactive soothing serum on a freshly brushed scalp.

tylists, we know you have busy lives, so we’re dishing out some Instagram tips that don’t require you to
work harder, just smarter. Ultimately, using our advice will grow your business, give you more followers, and bring in new clients. If you’re a stylist and posting your work on Instagram (every stylist should) we encourage you to consider the following:
PERSONAL VS. PROFESSIONALKeep your personal Instagram separate from your professional Instagram account. If you throw yourself in a party picture on a professional account with clients following you, it may give a bad impression and could lose you a few customers.
Make up your mind if you want to keep your page strictly professional. At the end of the day, if you want to grow your client base and be successful, you should keep your account professional. You can always keep a second account that’s for personal use—preferably under a name that people won’t confuse with your professional account.
WHAT’S IN YOUR BIO?Include your location in your bio—salon and city, state—so that people
can easily find your account. Your bio should be clean, creative, short, and listed as bullet points. Don’t be afraid to use some personality and emojis. You may also want to mention the brands you use and specialities like short haircuts, balayage, or nails.
The link in your bio is also critical, as this is how customers will book appointments and contact you. If you take appointments online, make sure to include a link to the salon website or Facebook page.
TAG YOUR SALON Tag your salon in photos and use your salon’s hashtags. You can gain followers from your salon’s Instagram and your salon’s Instagram can gain followers from you. It’s a win-win!
HOW TO HASHTAGIf you want to grow your client base, hashtagging your county and city is what’s going to get you clients. For example, if you work in Philly, use #Philly in your posts. Make sure not to use the same hashtags in every post—change them up because Instagram is always changing its algorithm.
POST YOUR PASSIONPost what you’re passionate about! Are you an expert in balayage? Reds? Do you love experimenting? Love weddings/updos? Once you post what you’re passionate about, remain consistent and focus on creating high-quality photos of your passion, whether it’s braids, Cezanne before and afters, or haircuts.
