President’s Report: Welcome to the last meeting for 2016. The club‟s Christmas party is to be held at Wamboin this coming weekend and we hope to

see as many as possible of our members at that event.

Minutes of previous meeting: Minutes of the November Meeting are published in the December edition of The Wheel. Minutes need to be amended to

correctly spell the name of Nancy-Lea Legge.

Treasurer’s Report: The current balance in the club‟s accounts is $12,458 including the amount held on fixed deposit. A payment of $500 for a sponsorship

package with Shannons is also included in the total.

Homestead Press account for $231 has been paid under the standing

arrangement.

Club members are asked to make a $5 per adult donation towards the

defrayment of costs for the Christmas party. This will defray some of the cost of

meats, bread and other expenses related to the party. It is expected that the

total purchases for the party will be less than $700. Approval is sought for the

disbursement of up to $700 for the expenses associated with the event.

STHARC’S

CHRISTMAS PARTY,

13 DECEMBER 2016

Those club members who were unable to come along to STHARC‟s Christmas Party missed out on a fantastic day. Held at the Wamboin Community Hall,

helpers transformed the Hall into a festive setting. The catering, thanks to the cold meats provided by the Club, along with salads and desserts provided by our members and guests, was first class. Lawrie and Jane‟s visitors from the Chinese Embassy enjoyed the community spirit and the Club‟s hospitality. The Raffle was popular with many prizes on display as well as 2 lucky door prizes. Santa‟s arrival was eagerly anticipated by the children and Santa, his camera and his Elf were a great hit. Santa was heard to grumble about having to arrive in a Ford, even though it was chosen as the best decorated car. We were treated to a solo performance of a Chinese folk song by Yafen, a well known Chinese Soprano and the wife of the Cultural Counsellor, Mr Yang. You could hear a pin drop when she sang! When it was time to go home it didn‟t take long to restore the hall to pristine condition, thanks to the many helping hands. A very special thank you to Hazel Roxburgh, the co-ordinator for this event, and Ray and Barbara Malam for booking the Hall and collecting the key. A special thank you also to all those who came along and enjoyed the day.

Summernats 2017 I wasn’t going to attend Summernats this year, but I ended up taking the Hunter along, mainly because my son and his mate wanted to go and have a look. After last year, I was not that keen to go because of the amount of drag cars that seemed to overtake the event. In contrast to last year, Summernats Sunday, was quite tame this year. I didn’t see anyone else from the club there, so I apologise if I missed you.

The big change in the event, from a car lovers perspective, was the dumping of the stereo sound off. In the main pavilion the top 30 cars were presented to the public in a very professional layout. Not only was the pavilion cooler than outside, the cars were of an extremely high quality. More art than motor car in some instances. The top 30 cars at Summernats are a step above the “normal” car enthusiast’s restoration. My assumption is that most of these cars in the top 30, were trailered to the event.


Of course there were burnouts and horsepower heroes and all the same trade stands. If the organisers stick with the same format next year, I’ll be returning, and would recommend other clubs members take another look coming along to Summernats Sunday in 2018.

Registrar: Several new registrations on club plates including 2 Mustangs, a Rover and a Subaru Ute. Registrar advised that NSW RMS has announced that

the Modified Vehicle Scheme will commence on 19 December 2016. Also

members were advised that non-compliance with the requirements of the 60 day

scheme will carry a penalty of a $440 fine and 4 demerit points.

Property Officer: Club caps have been received.

Public Officer : New legislation effective September 2016 looks likely to require amendment of STHARC‟s Constitution or By-laws. Committee will look into the

changes needed and submit a recommendation to club members.

Council Reports:

ACT Council

A 60 day scheme for modified vehicles in NSW has been agreed and the

Department is now preparing paper work and making plates. Start was expected

to be early 2017 but this advice is superseded by Registrar‟s advice..

ACT Motor Registry personnel raised the question of the NSW 60 day for trial at

a recent gathering. The approach was not official but it was seen as an

expression of interest which might provide an opportunity for something similar to

NSW arrangements to be put in place in the ACT.

There has been no movement on the SIVS arrangements. ACT Government has

not given any cause for optimism about its future. It looks like this matter is

dead in the water.


There were suggestions of a Wings n wheels event at Canberra Airport at some

future date. Canberra Airport advised that is not in a position to host Wings N

Wheels in 2017, but has invited the Council to be part of the next Canberra

Airport Open Day proposed for 2018. Discussions have revealed the cost of

running such an event. The Council‟s budget is not and is not likely to become

capable of supporting such an event.

An event will be held on 14/15 October 2017 at Albion Park. The Council is

hoping to participate by holding a „rally‟ and vehicle display at the Historic Aircraft

Restoration Society (HARS). A proposal for consideration by the Committee and

Council Delegates will be developed.

Bush Council Other than the now released start date for the modified vehicle scheme no new information to provide.

Events: Recent events

Bigga Golf Club Car & Bike show saw 4 STHARC vehicles in attendance out of a

total of about 80 cars.

Classic Yass 5 November was well attended see report in the Wheel.

Festival of Braidwood – 10 STHARC vehicles in attendance. A great event with

exceptional hosting by the Braidwood club. A lot of local co-operation in stalls

and participation.

Charity car show Goulburn – organized by some of the club‟s Goulburn

members, 150 cars were entered and the event raised between $6,000 and

$7,000 for cancer research.

Taralga Tractor and Machinery show was a good event for those who attended.

Queanbeyan Swap Meet STHARC site was in a good location. Suggested that

for next year the club takes at least on extra site to allow including a few club

vehicles to show visitors what we do.

Terribly British Day Sunday – numbers were down on previous years with only 3

STHARC vehicles on display on the site set aside for us. A great display of XK

Jaguars. Pleanty of STHARC members attended as visitors.

Moruya Hot Rod show was spectacular.

Young Cherry Festival – 2 STHARC vehicles participated in the display and

street parade

The end of the month ladies morning tea at Tilleys continued the successful

event. An additional outing was run on Monday 30 November to Gifts and

Gadgets in Queanbeyan.

Thursday night social meal at the Burns Club Kambah was well attended.

The first gathering for 2017 will be held on 9 February at the Queanbeyan

Kangaroos Club where the presentation dinner was held this year.

Mid week run to visit Ian Robinson and inspect his VW collection is reported in

Forthcoming events:

Christmas party arrangements are in hand. Hazel is co-ordinating the event. Not

many acceptances to date. Need numbers for catering. We have a Santa for the

event.

The twilight President‟s Run in January will be a Fish and chips outing to the

Southern Cross Yatch Club at Yarralumla Bay. Meet at the Club house from

4.15 pm for a 4.30 pm departure, a scenic drive via Black mountain peninsula

and Scrivenor dam then to the Yacht club from the Yarralumla end. Arrival is

anticipated by about 6.00 pm with a very brief monthly meeting to be held.

Members were advised that the Fish and Chips take away does not do gluten

free.

The guest speaker at the February meeting will be a well known hearing

specialist Dr Vagg.

Golden Era Auto Racing (GEAR) day is to be held on 7 December at Wakefield

Park near Goulburn. It is accepted as a club event for anyone able to attend.

General Business: Two applications for membership have been received. The Committee has

considered the applications and recommends to the membership that these new

members be accepted into the club. The members present voted unanimously to

accept Gary Anson and Jane Gudde as new members.

STHARC membership currently includes a large number of new members who

do not know many of the other members. Members are asked to wear their

membership badges to club events to help new members participate more

effectively in the club.

It was suggested that the equipment available to the Editor may not be the most

efficient for the purpose. The President undertook to make contact with the Editor

and establish what if anything extra can be done to assist the Editor fulfil her role.

The limited number of members participating in club events was identified as an

issue which the club should examine. It was noted that this issue has previously

been considered by the Committee and at that time no further action was

considered to be warranted.

It was proposed that the Committee should examine what changes if any could

be introduced to improve membership participation and report back to members.

Moved Chris Hillbrick-Boyd seconded Pauline Campbell. 12 members in favour

and 5 against the motion was carried and the Committee will report back to the

membership.


Health and Welfare: Peter Migan is recuperating but is not yet driving. He lives on the Tarago Road north of Bungendore for anyone able to pick him up for club

events. Members with ongoing conditions are reported to be in stable situations

at this time.

Raffle: Super Cooler won by Pauline Campbell, wine by Ian Robinson, calendars by Allan Boyd, Kenny Carratt, Craig Malam and Hazel.

President’s Twilight Run 15 January 2017

Summer is a challenging time for old cars and some of their owners. The weather was actually quite mild to what it could have been, but was still sufficiently hot to have members talking about old cars and air conditioning. The scenic route to the Yacht club via the arboretum was not enjoyed by everyone but by 6.30 there was a good roll up of members and their families. The fish and chips menu may have been a contributing factor. Agreeable company, nice summer late afternoon conditions and good food made for a pleasant outing. Roll call: Malcolm and Raelene Stewart, Malcom and Hazel Roxburgh, Keith and Janice Bateman, John Corbett, John and Ronda Cornwell, Geoff and Janette Rudd, Rosemary and John Thomas, Graeme Bates, David and Lynne Torricke-Barton, Ray and Barbara Malam, Hugh Spencer and Bev Lang, Allan and Chris Boyd and three grandchildren, Bob Fulthorpre and Katy Daly, Nathan Guinness, Shannan Forrest and two children, Kenny and Kath Carratt, Christine and Tony Brown, Lawrie and Jane Nock, visitors Tiffany Marum and three children.


Mucking around with the odd spot of polio, diphtheria, encephalitis,

tetanus, rabies and such like stuff (vaccines that is) sometimes takes me

to interesting places, although Liaoning Sheng province in North East

China in January was a challenge. However, I struck a purple patch of

good weather - bright sunny days, little or no wind. But temperatures of -8

to -25oC made me glad I took long underwear and a feather down jacket.

Not much time for sightseeing but the Sat departure for Beijing was late

night so hosts took me for a bit of sight seeing and shopping. And eating.

Eating is A+++ in China - fantastic food with so much variety.

Went to the Shenyang Palace Museum - only well preserved royal palace

outside of the Forbidden City in Beijing. It dates from the last of the

Manchu period of the Qing dynasty, when Shenyang was the capital and

just before it was moved to Peking. About 600 years old but parts of it are

800 years old. Wow.

What caught my eye was a 1350s chariot for hauling the Emperor around.

About 6 - 8 men to haul

about 2 tonnes. Couldn‟t

have got it on club reg

as it was not self

powered but would have

been an interesting

conversation piece if I

could have snuck it on

board the Air China

Boeing.

Ladies’ Morning Teas

November and December

2016

Our morning tea on 25 November was at Tilly Devine Cafe in Lyneham. Finding a car park was a little difficult but once inside the decision to order our coffee and cake was made. We did have someone order a breakfast (Pauline) because she was hungry, a late breakfast. As the morning progressed we proved we could solve the worlds problems. How fast a couple of hours go when you are enjoying yourself.

Monday 5.12.16. Our last meeting for the year was held at Gifts and Gagets in Queanbeyan. The store was going to close down so we thought it would be nice to have our morning tea there, as we had our first meeting there. We had a good roll up and were in Christmas mode. Recipes for cakes and pudding were passed on so I expect there would have been lots of goodies at Christmas. It was lovely to have Hazel with us as she and her family have had a couple of difficult weeks. Also it was nice to have Ros. her daughter Tracey, and her grand daughter Felicity with us.
