"We have churches, colleges, families, and corporations that request FMSC MobilePack events," Janine said. FMSC simply requests the sponsor provide a large meeting room space in order to house the production lines along with a commitment to pack at least 100,000 meals.

FMSC requests donations in order to 100% fund your pack event. "The ingredients and supplies used, amount to about $50 per person for an entire packing event," Janine added. Each meal costs approximately 22 cents.

There are three product lines that FMSC produces: rice based packs, potato based packs to assist with diarrheal/cholera problems, and potato based packs to supplement the weaning of younger children.

On January 21-23, 2016, the Oro Valley Church of the Nazarene is sponsoring a MobilePack event with the goal of packing over one hundred thousand meals. In 2017, FMSC is planning a very large MobilePack event for the entire city of Tucson

fever. Also, PACC has recently begun a behavior modifi cation program for dogs that have socialization issues to aid dogs that require help building confi dence, are slightly aggressive, or are not responding well in the shelter. Every kennel has blankets and bedding and there is classical music playing on the intercom as we walk down the aisles, which has a calming eff ect on dogs. Each dog in the facility gets walked 20-30 minutes every day to prevent “kennel craziness.”

Besides the main area, there are communal enclosures. For instance, there is an area for puppies and younger dogs that are isolated for safety reasons. Aside from the regular cat adoption rooms with kennels, there are also spaces where cats can roam freely with a large cat tree in the center of the room. Spaces like this are for long-term cats that aren’t getting adopted right away. Here, they have more room and can socialize more easily and tend to show better all-around, which

increases the likelihood of them getting adopted sooner.

PACC is able to rescue pets in need and save lives because of the invaluable role volunteers play. PACC

is always accepting new volunteers, and their roles are always evolving. People are able to help by becoming adoption hosts, dog walkers, cat socializers, groomers, outreach

season. It is as if one leads to the other – what resolve will we have after we have expressed our wishes?

Sometimes our dreams and wishes do not come to fruition, but sometimes they do. For Zachary Hart, we at the Tanque Verde Voice wish that his wish is all that he hopes it will be. We wish that all those who struggle with serious illness, especially children, will have their dreams come true this 2016, in some meaningful way. We wish that those who struggle with health problems, fi nancial hardship, emotional struggles, or relationship diffi culties will fi nd what they wish and hope for this coming year. This is our wish.

hhhhhhhhhhhhh

Our WishThe staff of The Tanque Verde Voice has a regular meeting where we discuss the current issue in progress, upcoming issues, topics, paper layouts, and such. At our last meeting, thinking of wanting to say something special for the season, I asked for their input.

Having just discussed Kimberly’s article on the Make A Wish foundation’s wish for Zachary Hart, (see inside), one of our participants declared, after noting he does not make resolutions, that his wish for the new year is that all children had their wishes come true.

Now, of course, if that happened, we would be awash with astronauts, cowboys, pirates, princesses, and superheroes of every sort.

The thought of such a thing brings a smile to me. There is an innocence to the wishes of a child. Like a dream, a wish is something that is not real, but could perhaps be real. After all, there are real astronauts, cowboys, and even real live heroes.

There is something compelling about wanting the wishes of children to come true. It indicates to me a desire for something more. A yearning, if you will, of an ideal reality. I am reminded that on the 18th of January, we also celebrate Martin Luther King’s birthday with a federal holiday. In his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, Dr. King spoke of a time when people would not be judged by the color of their skin (or I might add any of the other circumstances of birth) but by the “content of their character.” Has Martin’s dream come to pass? Not really. Does it still speak to a desired ideal reality that we can all look forward to? Yes, it does.

During the Christmas season, we wish for peace on earth and good will for all, even though we know that this is not a realistic wish. However, each holiday and Christmas season, we repeat this wish, and often add our own personal dreams and goals for the coming year. It is no surprise that New Year’s Resolutions follow so closely after the Christmas holiday

This is a book he will appreciate as he waits to receive his lung transplant from Stanford University Hospital.

The transplant will require the family to move to California while they await a donor. Afterward, the family will have to stay at least three months to ensure the transplant was effective and there were no complications. Because the family cares for three other children, they will need to be split up during this time. Some will be

A Local Student is Granted the Wish of a Lifetime by Kimberly Crossland, The Savvy Copywriter

A local student was given an early present this holiday season from the Make A Wish Foundation. Zachary Hart, a sixth grader at Old Vail Middle School, was flown to Universal Studios in Florida to see the World of Harry Potter on January 7, 2016. Soon after, he will move to California, where he will await a lung transplant.

On December 4, the eighth grade students prepared to help present Zachary with his wish. Many of the students dressed up as characters from Harry Potter to help create a festive environment in the auditorium. The wish granter from Make a Wish, Stacey Lowe, was there to present Zachary with his dream vacation.

Zachary’s fight began in the most unassuming of ways. His grandparents (who care for Zachary) were called to pick up their grandchild from school because he had a fever. Soon after, the fever developed into pneumonia. As the doctors tested and researched, they discovered Zachary has a rare lung disease called Steven Johnson Syndrome or bronchiolitis obliterans.

The disease causes Zachary to have a fixed airway obstruction, leading to inflammation and scarring. He has to live with persistent shortness of breath and a dry cough.

Right now, Zachary goes to the Banner Diamond Children’s center three times a month for care. In spite of the disease, he has tried to maintain a normal childhood.

“The schools have been really awesome,” said Jay Hart, Zachary’s grandpa and caregiver. He was moved when Zachary’s sixth grade class wrote notes of inspiration on

about that time she bleached your favorite shorts. Remember those lectures your grandmother gave when she was alive. Take a walk outside and enjoy that sunburst.

These little holidays will help on those rough days and hold us over until the next big celebration. Especially during August.

hhhhhhhhhhhhh

HolidaysAfter the big holiday season, I wanted to relax and enjoy some down time. But Life marched on and dragged me into a new year. This year as I prepped my calendar, I procrastinated by looking at the upcoming holidays, anything to hang on to the holiday spirit.

Nearly every month has one official holiday, some have multiple. The exception? August, not one. Then there are those other holidays, those ones that don’t make the calendar, yet pop up on social media, like Global Belly Laugh Day. This holiday’s website says, “On January 24 at 1:24 p.m. (local time) smile, throw your arms in the air and laugh out loud.” I love holidays and traditions, so I’ll add Belly Laugh Day to my calendar.

But what is a holiday? According to Wikipedia.com: “…Generally, holidays are intended to allow individuals to celebrate or commemorate an event or tradition of cultural or religious significance.”

Every day has something to celebrate, remember, or commemorate. Sometimes it’s momentous like the birth of a child or a wedding anniversary, other times it’s the death of a beloved family member. It could simply be a day without conflict, the washing machine washed one more load, or the kids cleaned up after themselves.

I say we set aside time everyday for a mini-holiday, even if it’s only for a moment. Startle your family with that unexpected belly laugh. Remember that time you got in trouble with your best friend. Laugh with your sister

Take turns in which you read a page and then your youngster reads a page. This engages the reluctant reader and makes comprehension more attainable. Build on your child’s interests by providing books and magazines that focus on their interests and hobbies.

Just as reading with and to your child is crucial, so is encouraging independent reading. The amount of autonomous reading students do significantly influences their reading ability. As their aptitude increases, so will their enjoyment. When they love being immersed in written material, they no doubt will want to do it more often…. a wonderful cycle to reinforce!

Create a wonderfully memorable elementary school experience for you child by making certain that your child is a proficient reader. Not only will he or she get more out of

elementary school, but having a literary infused life will open up a world of joy and opportunities for years to come.

hhhhhhhhhhhhh

Reading... It's Elementary!Take a moment and conjure up memories of your elementary school days. Did your mind race back to yellow buses transporting you on field trips to museums, crafting tri-fold poster boards for the science fair, nervously presenting an oral report, and the excitement as the lights dimmed for the school theatrical performance? What do all of these things have in common? In order to be involved in any of these, you had to know how to read. At

no other time is mastering the art of reading as critical as during the elementary school years.

Academic success in every arena is dependent upon grasping the fundamental skill of reading. As your child progresses through the grades, he is expected to move from reading a simplistic primer, to understanding and assimilating facts and complex information. In my tutoring sessions, I see that children who haven’t made the leap to fast fluent reading, begin at this juncture to fall behind and for most of them, the gap will continue to grow unless academic support is pursued.

You can ensure that your child is an adept reader. Surround your child with opportunities to read and discuss books. Dedicate a specific time each day for family reading.

Exploring the Solar System through Art by Michelle Rouch

The University of Arizona’s third annual 2015 “The Art of Planetary Science” (TAPS) welcomed nearly 250 works of art of all media from 118 artists and scientists. The grand opening celebrated the beauty of science and technology, transforming the Kuiper Space Science Building into a 3 tier Art Museum for the weekend. The displayed artwork came from local artists who were inspired by aerospace technology, science, and astronomy along with scientists who created artwork from their research. The Lunar and Planetarium Laboratory continue to push the boundaries by creating an opportunity for scientists to consider their research as art and artists to interpret the same theme in creating their artwork.

TAPS breaks down the barriers by combining an open competition for artists and scientists of all levels and types to explore our solar system through art. The event is open to the public to experience how the science department collaborated with the School of Art, Art & Visual Culture Department, Culture and Art Education by hosting live art activities. Art students , John Preston Strand and Mercé Mueller asked the guests to help them bridge the gap between art and science with their interactive art where guests are asked to color one square and affix the square to its coordinated number. The activity involved the guests to help create an artistic rendition of the equation from the theory of elasticity and flexure. The artwork is a mathematical equation with the Plate Flexure, illustrating how the tectonic plates of the Earth and other planets are not infinitely strong.

The People’s Choice Award went to Jamie Molaro’s “Stress, on the rocks.” Her artwork was a book

the corner. How can you gently coax it in your direction?

The fi rst step is to start by looking in the mirror.

Repeat the following phrase: “I love you” every day to your best friend, you. Belief in yourself is a good beginning.

Second, fi nd something greater than yourself to care about. There’s nothing sexier than meeting someone who’s engaged in making the world a better place.

Third, remain optimistic. What’s the best way to meet someone special, you might ask. Whatever way leads to a meaningful connection. Meetups, introductions through friends, the list goes on. Even the fanciful story George in the movie Green Card spins about how he met his wife-- colliding with her when both had arms full of parcels-- could conceivably happen.

A foodie I know named Rosemarie met her boyfriend at a party; at the dessert table, he asked out loud, “Who made this fabulous raspberry/chocolate raw cheesecake?” It was indeed Rosemarie.

With a little luck, you could be the one I write about for Valentine’s Day 2017!

We met when I took a few dance lessons from Miro. Valentine’s Day Couples by Barbara Russek

What a diff erence a day makes! December 25th was about red and green, Santa Claus and mistletoe, maybe even a few chestnuts, fi ggy pudding, and a partridge in a pear tree. By the next morning, Christmas 2015 had become a series of snapshots added to our mosaic of past holiday memories.

A glance at the novelty counter of a big box store on December 26th served as a reminder that February 14th was just around the corner. Valentine’s Day cards, candles and even confetti were already on display. In the spirit of the season of love, I decided to learn as much as I could about the complex subject of coupling. What better way to do it than by querying the couples themselves, who all just happen to live in the Vail area. As I happily discovered, love is as common as an Arizona sunset, with just as many variations on a theme as any spectacular sunset ever had.

The cluster has never failed to amaze me, its magnifi cent structure lighting up the night sky, and my imagination. It is easy to fi nd these nights as it sets in the west, beckoning us to appreciate both it and the poet who admired it so much. When we read these poems, we are transformed to a new world where only our eyes and brains need be awake. Their poetry only makes the priceless gem of the night sky even richer.

David Levy lives in Vail with his wife Wendee who helps him run the

Jarnac Observatory located directly behind their home. He spends his days writing, editing, and giving

speeches, but his nights staring up at the sky.

hhhhhhhhhhhhh

Tire of their fl ow, they sing one song but they think silence.

The striding winter giant Orion shines, and dreams darkness.”

Jeff ers invokes images from all over the sky in this poem. Antares is a monarch of the summer sky, shining brightly at the head of the scorpion. Arcturus reigns from spring to fall in the northern constellation of the herdsman, but Orion rules though sky of winter, dominating the night with his magnifi cent belt of three bright stars surrounded by four even brighter stars, so that the whole complex resembles a magnifi cent structure not unlike the tower from which Jeff ers is observing.

It is easy to fathom Jeff ers’interest in astronomy, in part because his brother, Hamilton Jeff ers, was a famous astronomer who worked at the Lick Observatory. Known for

his precise work, he photographed comet Schorr of 1918, helping to refi ne its orbit. Asteroid 1934 Jeff ers forever honors his contributions to astronomy, and if I may be so bold as to add, his inspiration for his brother Robinson to write poetry.

If Jeff ers’ lines help us to appreciate the beauty of the night sky, the writings of Kenneth Rexroth

demonstrate its detail in “Another Spring”:

“High in the sky the Northern Crown

Is cut in half by the dim summit of a snow peak.”

This poet obviously knew how to use a telescope. In “The heart of Herakles”, he writes how, as “Constellations climbed the sky,”

“As the cluster of Hercules falls down the west I put the telescope by and watch Deneb move towards the zenith.

My body is asleep. Only my eyes and brain are awake.”

I have viewed Messier 13, the wonderful globular star cluster in Hercules which showcases over a hundred thousand stars, hundreds of times through dozens of telescopes.

Poetry in the Night SkyAnyone can enjoy the night sky. While this column is intended specifi cally for those who enjoy going outside and relishing the wonders of the night, it is also meant for musicians who, like Saint-Saens, appreciate the sky vicariously through the music they compose. It is also meant for those who appreciate the sky through the poetry they write. This month we will explore the astronomical interests of two American poets, both of whom lived in the American West, and both of whom loved the stars. Robinson Jeff ers and Kenneth Rexroth both lived in the early years of the 20th century and both wrote about the sky.

I begin with Robinson Jeff ers. As a human being, he particularly enjoyed living in California, and he built a stone cottage and tower that allowed him to watch the Pacifi c Ocean near Big Sur. As an amateur astronomer, he especially enjoyed the night sky from the castle’s turret. As a poet, Jeff ers’ writings are infused with the magic of the night sky from long before he even dreamed of building his tower, but the stone structure with its small lamp focused his attention:

“this August night in a rift of cloud Antares reddens,

The great one, the ancient torch, a lord among lost children,…

Of a lost fi re dying in the desert… Wandered from at dawn…”

A few lines later, the poet delights his readers with his casual familiarity of the night sky:

“Oh passionately at peace when will that tide draw shoreward?

Truly this pouting fountains of light, Antares, Arcturus,

second birthday. These first formative years are so important to assure the healthy growth and development of the baby. In the first year, most babies will learn to roll, crawl, and take their first steps. They will gain strength and balance, double their birth weight, cut their baby teeth, eat finger foods, and curiously explore every available nook and cranny. Think of the last time any of us learned so many life skills in such a short period of time. It’s a big job and a big responsibility. Nurses from the Pima County Health Department work hard to bring this valuable supportive program to young women, and we do it at no charge to our moms.

As role models for their babies, I encourage moms to take care of themselves too. By resting when tired and eating when hungry, mom is better prepared to care for her baby. Because she is well rested and nourished, mom has the stamina to keep up with the many changes and growth needs of her baby. Together, mom and baby forge a relationship founded on love and trust. Together they learn, grow and adapt with all the changes baby is experiencing. I strive to help each mom learn how to listen and observe what their baby

is trying to tell them in their own baby way. By observing and helping mom understand her baby’s little nuances, she is better able to respond and adapt to the needs of her growing baby. These “Ah Ha” moments, when mom and baby connect – they are shining stars that I collect and keep in my pocket. I am honored to be

welcomed into these moments to celebrate with mom the many wonders of parenthood.

A few things about this program:

• Help moms have a healthy pregnancy

• Foster long-term improvements in family health

• Understand the growth and development stages of new babies

• Learn ways to teach your baby during playtime

Hello, I am a public health nurse and I speak Baby!by Karen Murphy

My name is Karen Murphy, and I love my job! I have the distinguished honor to be one of 5 nurses in Pima County who dedicate their days guiding new moms through the kaleidoscope of changes that women go through preparing and then caring for their first baby.

In our fast paced and highly mobile world, sometimes young pregnant women do not have family nearby to support and guide them through the exciting new world of pregnancy and parenthood. That’s where I and my fellow nurses come in. When young women expecting their first child connect with us during the first 28 weeks of their pregnancy, they have secured someone they can count on to help them through the many changes, milestones and growth spurts that will occur. I take the time to meet with a new mom personally and privately in order to better understand ‘her story.’ I have met some very brave and courageous women who have taken the time to evaluate their current circumstances and have made changes to benefit their baby’s health and well-being. All of the women our program supports have chosen to make changes that will benefit themselves and their first baby.

I strive to be a personal cheerleader and trusted confidant for each of my new moms beginning and during those early weeks of pregnancy and continuing through their baby’s

The Pima County Department of Transportation is installing a “HAWK beacon” crossing at the entrance to Emily Gray Junior High School. A HAWK beacon (High-Intensity Activated (cross) Walk beacon) is a traffic control device used to stop road traffic and allow pedestrians to cross safely. Although the speed limit on Tanque Verde Road was recently reduced from 45 to 35 in the area of the junior high school, there are still issues with speeding and low pedestrian visibility in the area. The new device is expected to take approximately two and a half months to complete.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has reinstated the School Resource Officer (SRO) Program, and the Tanque Verde USD is a participating district. In addition to his regular assignment, Deputy Keith Barnes, the district’s assigned SRO, is providing a parent education program on drug abuse prevention to district parents. The program is intended to teach parents how to support and educate their children at a younger age how to make good choices, and heighten their awareness of the dangers of drug abuse at an appropriate age. teachers are preparing their students for the second administration of the AzMERIT assessment in April. Individual student’s 2015 score reports were sent to parents at the end of November. This allows only a short timeframe before the next administration of the exam. The district assessment coordinator is working with school principals to evaluate overall performance on the 2015 assessment, and to determine areas which may need additional focus before the 2016 exam. The district’s scores on the first AzMERIT assessment last year were above the state average, as were the former AIMS assessment results. The two exams do not have a direct comparison as the testing and scoring methods are not the same.

In a community-based collaboration with Desert Skies United Methodist Church, adult volunteers from the church are providing tutoring support for a group of elementary level students in need of remediation. The tutors were provided with training and work one-on-one twice-weekly with the students. Tutoring focuses on assignments and activities intended to support their classroom learning. Classroom teachers are assigned to supervise this after-school tutoring program.

In other community volunteer efforts, the Tanque Verde Foundation (TVF), formerly known as the Tanque Verde Schools Educational Enrichment Foundation (TVSEEF), currently hosts two annual events which raise money for grants which support technology and enrichment items in the district’s four schools. These district-wide events are the Tech Trek and the Taste of Tanque Verde. The 2015 grant program saw the inaugural “Dr. Douglas E. Price Innovation Award,” a grant made in honor of the district’s former superintendent. This grant was awarded in its first year to the Emily Gray Junior High School faculty to fund the new STEAM Lab.

The 2016 Tech Trek is scheduled on Saturday, January 30th, at Agua Caliente Elementary School. This year’s event has been retitled the “Technicolor Trek” and features a

If you didn’t make your 2015 tax credit contribution by December 31st, it’s no longer too late! The rules regarding Arizona tax credit contributions for public schools have changed to allow taxpayers to designate contributions made between January 1st and April 15th, 2016 toward either their 2015 or 2016 taxes. Contributions may be made at any district school, or online via the district’s Tanque Verde Online Store on the district website, www.tanq.org.

In December, the inaugural Tanque Verde Arts and Crafts Market was held, joining the district schools and the Adult Community Education Program in a collaborative fundraising event benefiting the district art program. The market was well attended, and featured the work of professional artists, local artisans, and district art students. With live music, fine arts, ceramics, fiber arts, metal sculpture, holiday items, baby alpacas, and even hot cider served in festive, student-crafted mugs, there was something for everyone.

Char’s Art Fund, a community-based funding resource, provides needed supplies for the district’s elementary art program. Area residents George and Charlene Atkinson organized the fund, and recently arranged for an Art Fund Matching Challenge Grant. Every donation made to Char’s Art Fund during the challenge will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $1,000 in total contributions. All donations are tax deductible and may be contributed through the Tanque Verde online store. The deadline has been extended to April 1st to qualify for the matching grant.

more than he was comfortable with, or talked about a personal issue and later regretted it.

This emotional discomfort and regret would be symbolized by degrees of exposure, with the extent of the physical exposure in the dream being dependent upon the extent to which the dreamer is feeling emotionally exposed - from missing pants all the way to being totally naked. If he broke down and cried in front of co-workers who he is not really close to, or who he is not really comfortable displaying this type of emotion around, he may later dream that he is totally naked. If he just shared a little more than he should have about his marital problems or a lack of confidence in some area he is sensitive about, he may find that he is just missing some pants in his dream. Again, the constant in the dream will be that the missing clothing will reflect the degree to which he feels vulnerable and exposed to the outside world. Now, if the dreamer is happy or relieved to be physically exposed in his dream, that is, typically, nothing to be concerned about either. It is probably just a reflection of the dreamer’s desire to be free and emotionally open in his world.

hhhhhhhhhhhhh

Dear Claire,

I had the weirdest dream; and I have had ones like it in the past. I dreamt that I was getting ready for work and that I was perfectly dressed and ready to go. The next thing I knew, I had arrived at work, but for some reason, I had no pants on. I was panicked because I had no pants with me to put on, and my co-workers were arriving, and I had no place to hide. I was so freaked out, that I woke up and was pretty unsettled all day about having the dream. When I went to work, I was telling my co-workers the story and, unbelievably, they have all had similar dreams. None of us know why, and that is why I am writing to ask you. We are all curious (and a little worried).

Well, don’t worry. This is an extremely classic dream which can come in many different forms—and with varying degrees of “undress.” However, the constant, common component in this type of dream will always be the important missing item (or items) of clothing—and this missing item of clothing will always be one which leaves the dreamer feeling exposed, vulnerable, and open to potential public ridicule and/or shaming. In fact, in many of these dreams, the dreamer can often find that he is in a state of total nakedness—perhaps, with nowhere to hide. In this case, the dreamer must ascertain exactly why he is feeling so uncomfortably exposed to the world. If he were to go back and closely examine recent events and exchanges which occurred in his life prior to this dream, he would probably find that there was some instance or interaction where he may have felt that he revealed too much personal information to a person, or persons, around him. For example, perhaps he shared too much of what he was feeling, let down his guard
