With You I Am Well Pleased
Most people like to hear that they are doing a good job. It gives me a sense of satisfaction that I am doing what I should be doing and doing it well. It is especially rewarding when the compliment comes from someone in authority. Most people like it when their boss tells them they’ve done a good job. I am inclined to keep working to do my best when I feel appreciated. It’s harder to stay motivated when all your dedicated hard work goes unnoticed or unappreciated whether at home or at work.
On the third Sunday of Advent (December 13), we heard John the Baptist telling the priests and Levites that he was not the Christ. He was baptizing with water and foretold the one who would come after him. Today we hear this happening. John baptizes Jesus in the Jordan. It doesn’t end there. “On coming out of the water he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him. And a voice came from heaven saying ‘You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased’”. This was no ordinary baptism!
Can you imagine what John the Baptist would have been thinking after witnessing that? He was a man of deep faith. My guess is that he probably would be thinking, see I knew I was right about Jesus! As a faithful Jew he knew the Messiah was coming. He was born to be the one to announce the coming of the Messiah. What a wonderful feeling it must have been for John to hear the voice of God proclaiming Jesus as his beloved son!
This would have been a very touching moment for Jesus as well. Being fully human, he had to figure out what God was asking him to do. How reassuring to hear God calling you his beloved Son and saying that God was well pleased with you! Through my baptism I know that I am a beloved daughter of God. I pray that someday I may hear that God is well pleased with me.
Jesus was always going off by himself to pray, to seek guidance and direction from his Heavenly Father. If
I want God to be pleased with me I know that I have to do what God asks of me. This requires me to ask
God what God wants me to do and then to do God’s will. Every day I pray to seek, find, know and do
God’s will. Hopefully this will lead me on the path to hear God say to me, “With you I am well pleased”.

Contigo Estoy Bien Complacido
A la mayoría de las personas les gusta saber que están haciendo un buen trabajo. Me da una sensación de satisfacción porque estoy haciendo lo que debería hacer y haciéndolo bien. Es especialmente gratificante cuando el cumplido proviene de alguien con autoridad. A la mayoría de la gente le gusta cuando su jefe les dice que han hecho un buen trabajo. Me inclino a seguir trabajando para dar lo mejor de mí cuando me siento apreciado. Es más difícil mantenerse motivado cuando todo su arduo trabajo dedicado pasa desapercibido o despreciado, ya sea en casa o en el trabajo.
El tercer domingo de Adviento (13 de diciembre), escuchamos a Juan el Bautista decir a los sacerdotes y levitas que él no era el Cristo. Estaba bautizando con agua y predijo al que vendría después de él. Hoy escuchamos que esto sucede. Juan bautiza a Jesús en el Jordán. No termina ahí. “Al salir del agua, vio que los cielos se abrían y el Espíritu, como una paloma, descendía sobre él. Y vino una voz del cielo que decía: "Tú eres mi Hijo amado; contigo estoy muy complacido”. ¡Este no fue un bautismo ordinario!
¿Te imaginas lo que habría estado pensando Juan el Bautista después de presenciar eso? Era un hombre de profunda fe. Mi conjetura es que probablemente estaría pensando, ¡mira, yo sabía que tenía razón acerca de Jesús! Como judío fiel, sabía que venía el Mesías. Nació para ser el que anunciara la venida del Mesías. ¡Qué sentimiento tan maravilloso debe haber sido para Juan escuchar la voz de Dios proclamando a Jesús como su hijo amado!
Este también habría sido un momento muy conmovedor para Jesús. Siendo completamente humano, tuvo que averiguar qué le estaba pidiendo Dios que hiciera. ¡Qué reconfortante es escuchar a Dios llamándote su Hijo amado y diciendo que Dios estaba muy complacido contigo! Mediante mi bautismo sé que soy una hija amada de Dios. Oro para que algún día pueda escuchar que Dios está muy complacido conmigo.
Jesús siempre iba solo para orar, para buscar guía y dirección de su Padre Celestial. Si quiero que Dios esté complacido conmigo, sé que tengo que hacer lo que Dios me pide. Esto requiere que le pregunte a Dios qué quiere Dios que haga y luego haga la voluntad de Dios. Todos los días oro para buscar, encontrar, conocer y hacer la voluntad de Dios. Ojalá esto me lleve en el camino para escuchar a Dios decirme: "Contigo estoy muy complacido".

THE WATERS OF BAPTISM When new sod is put in, it needs constant saturation with water. Landscapers say that this “knits” the sod to the soil. The same when a branch is grafted onto a tree: the poultice that joins them at the splice must be kept wet at all times. Water is the stuff that binds the very cells of our bodies together. No wonder religions throughout all times and cultures have used it so prominently. When Jesus stepped into the Jordan for baptism, he “knit” himself to what had come before him. By going to the Jordan, he made himself one with the people of Israel who had crossed it into their Promised Land. With John the Baptist, Christ wove himself into the prophetic tradition that heralded the coming reign of God. He had become fully human in the waters of Mary’s womb, and by partaking in the rite of the baptism of repentance, Jesus identified himself with our sinful, frail humanity. It is through the waters of baptism that Christ continues to graft new members onto his Body, the Church; through these waters we are cleansed from sin and filled with the promise of grace, given our destiny for eternal life. For us, as for Jesus, it is also the waters of baptism that inaugurate our mission to proclaim the Good News.

LAS AGUAS BAUTISMALES Cuando se planta un césped nuevo, debe regarse constantemente. Los jardineros dicen que esto “teje” el césped al suelo. Lo mismo sucede cuando se injerta una rama a un árbol: el cataplasma que los une debe estar húmedo en todo momento. El agua es lo que mantiene unidas a las células de nuestro cuerpo. Con razón las religiones de todas las épocas y culturas han usado tanto este símbolo. Cuando Jesús se sumerge en el Jordán para ser bautizado, se “teje” a todo aquello que lo precedía. Al sumergirse en el Jordán, se hizo uno con el pueblo de Israel que había cruzado el río para llegar a su Tierra Prometida. Junto a Juan Bautista, Cristo se tejió a la tradición profética que presagiaba la venida del Reino de Dios. Jesús se había convertido plenamente en humano en las aguas del vientre de María y al participar del rito del Bautismo del arrepentimiento, se sintió identificado con nuestra frágil y pecaminosa humanidad. Por las aguas del Bautismo Cristo continúa injertando nuevos miembros a su Cuerpo, la Iglesia; gracias a nuestro destino de vida eterna, por estas aguas somos limpiados del pecado y recibimos la promesa de la gracia. The Sign of the Cross At the beginning of our prayer, we make the sign of the cross together. This sign, simple and powerful, operates on many levels. We trace the sign of the cross over our bodies, reminding ourselves that the cross of Christ has become our source of resurrection, life, and grace. With this sign, we also profess our faith in the Trinity: the presider does not say “in the names,” but “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit”—three persons, one God. The sign of the cross is also a baptismal reminder, for every sign of the cross echoes the words spoken over us at our baptism, which marked our entry into the saving mystery of Christ. This many-layered sign is also our primary sign of blessing: the cross is traced over people, places, and things upon which we ask God to impart divine benediction. In blessing ourselves with the sign of the cross at the beginning of Mass, we acknowledge the mystery that has gathered us together: that Christ, the crucified and risen One, is living, and that we are members of his Body. Our response, our Amen, is our yes to all this, our first profession of faith.

Convocados por Dios San Ignacio de Loyola enfatizaba mucho la necesidad de encontrar a Dios en todo, no porque Dios estuviera perdido o ausente, sino porque las personas no siempre son conscientes de su presencia en ellas o entre ellas. En la asamblea litúrgica es Dios quien nos convoca a celebrar con él, con Cristo y por medio de Cristo, la nueva alianza, la Pascua misma. Los textos posteriores a la resurrección así lo manifiestan, la preferencia del Señor por revelarse a la Iglesia en asamblea. Curiosamente, somos convocados por Dios y él se hace presente; nosotros somos participantes en este encuentro, más no protagonistas, porque el protagonista es Cristo mismo. No es una reunión cualquiera o reunión con fines meramente sociales, sino la reunión de los hombres y las mujeres libres que se reúnen a celebrar la presencia de Cristo y responden al llamado de Dios. No somos nosotros los que convocamos ‘una reunión con Dios’, sino Dios quien convoca un encuentro-celebración con nosotros. Por ello, no venimos como individuos aislados, sino como miembros de un solo cuerpo; no comulgamos para vivir la comunión, sino que comulgamos porque vivimos la comunión en medio de nuestra gran diversidad. Somos asamblea convocada, cuerpo vivo y santo que se hará sacrificio de alabanza.
