The deadline to get information into the Newsletter is the second Sunday of each month -Jan. 19th is the next deadline. The Newsletter is a great source of information.

Several thanks to Carol Wilson and her helpers for doing the window display for the Candlelight Tour.

Thanks to Friday Stitcher's for stuffing the stockings and Dodi and Judy for delivering 58 filled stockings to the Sr. Citizen Center. Also, we would like to thank Debbie Poole for delivering 45 charity quilts, 106 Beads of Courage bags, 49 Loveys and 107 Pillowcases.

MaryAnn asked how the Charity quilts were coming along and how many were completed. These are the quilts that were made in groups. If a group needs help, just ask.

It was decided that there was no need for a Board meeting in Jan. The board will resume meeting in February. All are welcome.

This ended the Business part of the meeting and started our Annual Christmas party. Everyone brought food and drinks. After everyone had eaten, Debbie Brown handed out Quilt Bingo cards for everyone to fill their blocks to win a fat quarter. There was lots of fun and laughter. Show and Tell was next.

The next Guild Meeting will be on Jan.28th at 7:00pm.

The meeting adjourned.

MORE CHARITY QUILT INFO

Request for medical dolls- Happy New Year, everyone! I hope you all enjoyed a relaxing holiday with family and friends. Hopefully we are ready to get back into the swing of normal life, including plenty of sewing! Our January Quilts for Kids meeting will be Saturday, January 18th (2 weeks from now) from 9:00-3:00 at the Clark County Extension Office. Once again, we will be sewing with the local Tied in Knots group; they will be there the entire weekend, so if you wish to extend your hours they will welcome you. We will be having a potluck lunch on Saturday. I will have a big pot of vegetable beef soup; if you would like to bring something to go along with it that would be nice. We have received a request from the Child Life department at Kentucky Children’s Hospital for simple medical dolls that are used to help explain upcoming procedures to kids. In the past we have made doll gowns, but now they are in need of more of the actual dolls (another group makes these, but the hospital needs more than they can provide). I have copied part of Christina’s explanation below and included the photos and pattern she sent. Please note that they ask for solid pastel fabrics. If you are interested in adding some dolls to your sewing projects, it will be much appreciated. Looking forward to seeing you on the 18th! Rosemary NOTE: If anyone is interested in making dolls, Debbie Poole will have copies of the pattern at the January guild meeting.

KEHA Creates 2020 Census Quilt

In the spring of 2019, the Kentucky Extension Homemakers Association (KEHA) was asked to consider a special project. Representatives from the Census Bureau inquired to see if KEHA would take on the task of creating a quilt including a square from each of Kentucky 120 counties for use in promoting the 2020 Census. The challenge was accepted, and the project was initiated in May.

In four short months, KEHA members across the state designed and created quilt squares representing each Kentucky County. Marlene McComas, KEHA Past President, worked with Grant County KEHA members to piece and finish the quilt. Special thanks to Linda Evans who led the quilt top construction and quilt binding, with assistance from Linda Lawrence. The machine quilting was completed by Lillian Thompson.

The completed quilt will make its debut through a special display at the National Quilt Museum in Paducah from September 16-21, 2019. A brief program is planned for 2:00 p.m. CDT on September 16th. Karen Hill, KEHA President, and Marlene McComas, KEHA Past President, will speak on behalf of KEHA. This will be KEHA's formal presentation of the quilt to the Census Bureau.

Following the September display in Paducah, the quilt will be traveling around Kentucky through a partnership between the Census Bureau and the Kentucky Department of Libraries and Archives. A schedule is in development and will be shared on this website when finalized.

This unique project has provided KEHA with an opportunity to showcase the organization's tenets of education, leadership and service. The quilt block designs and explanations will help viewers learn more about our state while showcasing the creativity of KEHA members. In addition, the quilt reminds viewers that every individual in every county counts – a key reminder for the 2020 Census. The project embodied leadership as KEHA members worked to make an idea a reality in less than four months. Service was on display as members volunteered their time and utilized their talent to create this beautiful fiber art. It is more than a quilt – it is an example of teamwork and achieving a common goal.

For more information on the quilt, or to see individual blocks check out this website.

This is a great little quilt care label you can print and include with quilt gifts.

Join Me in Making a Tree Block for the Bush Fire Survivors in Australia By Debra Miller The Wollongong Modern Quilt Guild has issued a call for tree blocks to put together into quilts for survivors of the terrible fires in Australia. In turn, I am calling on our guild members to contribute as they feel able.

There are virtually no rules. Tree theme. Low volume print or solid white or pale gray solid background. 100 percent cotton fabric. 12.75 inch squares (they will trim/square to 12.5 inches, so leave a little extra for trimming). Pieced, appliqué or other methods okay. While green is the predominate color in many of the blocks I have seen, it isn’t necessarily the only color used, or sometimes it is missing altogether. The guild wants the quilts to be beautiful and diverse just like the artists who contributed.

What an opportunity to be creative! The time and energy investment required is relatively small. Let’s see what CKHQG members can come up with!

I will collect blocks at Friday stitchers and the January and February meetings. They will be displayed at the February meeting. They must be completed by the end of February and mailed to Australia. I will take care of the mailing of all completed blocks. With a safety pin, include with your block your name, our guild name as well as your city, state, and country and any message you wish to convey. Here are some more details. Australian communities have been ravaged by fire since August 2019. In particular, the South Coast of New South Wales was devastated by bushfire on New Year’s Eve. Families have lost loved ones, others their homes and all their belongings. Farmers have lost livestock, others their livelihood, not to mention the extensive loss and damage to our native flora and fauna. Unfortunately, it is only the start of our fire season and immediate forecasts predict worsening conditions, and anticipate further loss and destruction. I have read that almost 200 people have been killed and an estimated ONE BILLION animals have lost their lives, including thousands of one-of-kind kangaroos, koalas, wallabies, and wombats.

The Wollongong Modern Quilt Guild has called out to anyone who would like to help us in making quilts for the affected families within our communities who have lost everything. They are making tree blocks. The tree is a symbol of growth and nourishment. A tree symbolizes the generations of a family; a tree sprouts from a seed, the roots provide strength and stability, and whilst the new sapling is young and vulnerable they are protected by the other trees until they grow and flourish. In time the branches spread and then create new fruit that gives life to the next generation.

You can read more about the challenge, find a frequently asked questions sheet (all colors okay; words okay; animals okay, all within the “tree” theme), and see completed blocks at the Facebook page of the Wollongong Modern Quilt Guild https://www.facebook.com/groups/832925917128551/?ref=share

There are also patterns for three suggested tree blocks if you need ideas. You can see the Frequently Asked Questions from this Facebook link https://www.facebook.com/groups/832925917128551/announcements/

And I warn you, if you join, you will get lots of posts and photos of blocks and lots of ideas and encouragement.
