It’s a new year and I hope everyone is getting back into the swing of things. 2016 is going to be an
exciting time for the Atlanta ASHRAE chapter and I hope you are part of it.
Be on the look-out for our winter and spring events that will include events like a trap shoot and a golf
tournament. We will also be hosting a pre-game tailgate for the GT vs UGA baseball game in May. As
plans are finalized they will be posted on the ASHRAE Atlanta Chapter website.
The most exciting opportunity will be the ASHRAE Region 4 Chapter Regional Conference which will be
held at Lake Lanier Island Resort on August 11-13. There will be numerous events and learning

Patrick “PJ” Newcomb
Sustainability Program manager, Coca-Cola North America
PJ serves as Sustainability Program Manager for Coca-Cola North America. In
addition to leading the Energy & Climate space in North America, PJ works on
policy, governance, and the tactical integration of all the Environment and
Sustainability work streams in North America, including Water Stewardship,
Energy Efficiency and Climate Protection, Sustainable Packaging, and
Sustainable Agriculture. He has focused on advancing sustainability for most of
his career in a variety of sectors, including manufacturing, government, and
higher education. PJ started his career as a supplier quality engineer with the
Saturn Corporation, where he helped develop their ISO-14001 certified Environmental Management
System and served on the site-wide Waste Management Administration Team. PJ then worked as a
research engineer with Georgia Tech’s Environmentally Conscious Design and Manufacturing Program,
where he worked with a team of professors, graduate students and professionals to assist manufacturers,
such as Ford and Interface, to integrate sustainability into their business decision-making routines. PJ
continued to serve businesses and organizations in Georgia as an engineer and program manager with
Georgia Department of Natural Resource’s Pollution Prevention Assistance Division. Immediately prior to
moving to Coca-Cola, PJ served as State Utility Program engineer for the Georgia Environmental Finance
Authority, where he worked with 35 state agencies to reduce their energy use and costs.
PJ serves on the Environmental Committee of the American Beverage Association and the Steering
Committee of the Georgia Environmental Conference. He also serves on the Advisory Board of Grants to
Green, a non-profit that assists Atlanta-area non-profits in reducing their utility bills so they can direct
those funds towards advancing their mission. PJ holds BS and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering as
well as an MS in History of Technology from Georgia Tech.

Gladiators Hockey Night

Come enjoy a night out with ASHRAE at the Atlanta Gladiators game on Friday,
January 29th! Friends, Family, Co-Workers, neighbors, strangers alike are all
welcome to the event!
This event includes a tour of the facility's refrigeration system, food and drinks at
the Party Terrace prior to game time, and a ticket to the game itself to see the
Gladiators take down Idaho!

I hope that the dusting of snow from past Friday the 22nd has left you rested and that you enjoyed the
forced Saturday staycation. They say that the weather patterns are changing but it seems that a heavier
than usual cold month will be experienced before spring.

Chilled Water Plant Design Tip: Central plant systems should have their
primary to secondary decoupler piping as short as possible with a length
preferred to be under less than 6 pipe diameters. The shorter the better
performance can be achieved.

Scholarships Available - Apply Today!
Through its scholarships, ASHRAE seeks to motivate students and prospective students worldwide to
pursue an engineering or technology career in the HVAC&R field. The Society’s Scholarship Program also
serves the public interest by aiding in the education of men and women to become qualified to practice
as engineers in HVAC&R. ASHRAE has 28 scholarships available for the 2015-16 school year, for high
school seniors entering college through senior undergraduate engineering students and engineering
technology students. ASHRAE is seeking your assistance in making student members aware of this
financial assistance.
* 8 regional/chapter and university-specific scholarships — $3,000 to $5,000 each. Now accepting
applications!
* 12 undergraduate engineering scholarships — $3,000 to $10,000 each. Now accepting applications!
* 4 high school senior scholarships — $3,000 each
* 4 engineering technology scholarships — $5,000 each

How Do I Join ASHRAE?
1. Visit http://www.ashraeatlanta.org/ to start the process
2. Click “Membership” on the horizontal menu bar
3. On the pull down menu, click “Join”
4. Enter your email address in the box “Verify your E-mail status”
5. A prospective member will then be directed to enter his or her email information. As a new member,
your address will not be recognized, and you will be invited to “Register Now”.
6. After you complete registration, you will be directed to the Individual Information page where you
can finally select “Join ASHRAE”!

Again this year, our use of the Internet to further embrace our goal of Modeling a Sustainable World will

Nick is currently a Commissioning Authority and Energy Modeling Consultant at
Sustainable Investment Group (SIG). He is the project manager for Commissioning,
Retro-Commissioning and ASHRAE Level I&II Energy Audit projects all over the
country in addition to heading up the Energy Modeling department. Nick is a
graduate of Georgia Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical
Engineering. He has been volunteering with ASHRAE since graduation, making his
way through the Student Activities and Research Promotion chair positions.
