Motivation & Habit
When we lived in Neenah, I
went to the YMCA almost every
morning. The Y was right across
the street from the church I
served. I would work out and
then go to work.
I hated January at the Y. There
were too many people. It seemed
that a whole bunch of people
made a New Year’s resolution
every year to get in shape. They
were motivated to exercise and
get healthier. They also got in my
way.
But by February everything was
back to normal. Almost all the
new members had lost their moti-
vation and gone back to their old
routines.
“Motivation is what gets you
started. Habit is what keeps you
going.”
I’m not sure who should get the
credit for that quote. I’ve seen it
attributed to Jim Ryan, Jim Roan
and Jim Ryun. I’d like to think it
was Jim Ryun the world record
breaking runner who said it. No
matter who said it, there is a lot of
truth in it.
There are some things that are so
important we should not even
have to think about them. Moti-
vation is needed when there might
be a choice. Habit takes the need
for motivation away. Like Nike
used to proclaim, we “just do it”.
Do you see how that works with
exercise? Do you see how that
works with buckling your seatbelt or
saying thank you?
And how about prayer? How about
a time for daily devotional and Bible
reading? How about weekly church
worship?
“I am the way, the truth, and the
life.”
I know who said that. Jesus didn’t
just say it. He showed it. He showed
us the way to eternal life and the
hope it brings. He showed us the
way of forgiveness and the ability to
forgive it brings. He showed us the
way of love and the love it brings.
His hope, forgiveness and love moti-
vate us to follow him.
So how about moving that motiva-
tion to habit? Wouldn’t it great if
we didn’t even have to think about
sharing hope, forgiveness and love .
. . we “just did it”?
Are you motivated to make 2011 a
good year? What changes would
you make so that it can be? If you
have the motivation, can you find
the dedication to make it a habit?
May God bless us all with habits
that will make our lives and the lives
of others better in 2011!

The Olive Branch is a symbol of peace, harmony and healing.Olive trees provide shelter, as well as oil used for ointment and
consecration. The Olive Branch also represents deliverancefrom hardships and anxiety because a dove brought an oliveleaf back to Noah’s ark after the flood ended (Genesis 8:11)

HAPPY NEW YEAR to you all!
One of the most popular New Year’s Resolutions is to lose weight.
One way to achieve this goal is to exercise along with healthy foods and portion sizes.
How do you start? How do you continue?
Here’s some tips that may help you: Start with prayer. Ask His guidance as you set your goals and begin exercising and eating healthy foods
and portion sizes.
Check with your Healthcare provider. Find out what he/she suggests and make sure the exercise activi-
ties are healthy for your age and physical ability.
Exercise with a friend. Working out with a friend or even verbally encouraging a friend can help provide
mutual support and may help each other keep exercising! This may help beat the procrastination virus!
Begin slowly. Choose an exercise that you enjoy and start the exercise activity slowly to avoid injury.
Then…keep doing it!!
Write your exercise time down in your calendar/daily planner. Prioritizing and follow-thru are im-
portant keys to healthy weight lose.
Put a sticky note or mini calendar where you are most likely to see it and make a check mark or ―E‖
for exercise on the days that you do it.
Treat yourself. Once you’ve reached a certain weight loss goal or healthy exercising goal, treat yourself
to whatever gives you joy! Then, make a continued lifestyle change a daily habit of consistently exercising,
eating healthy foods and portion sizes for a much healthier body, mind and spirit in 2011!
Romans 15:13- “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may
overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
God’s peace and blessings,
Nurse Marsha

Calling an “Associate Pastor”
On January 30th at 9:15, Peace Lutheran Church will be conducting their Annual Business Meeting. All con-
firmed members of Peace are requested to attend this important meeting.
This meeting will affect the future of Peace Lutheran Church.
The primary topic will be the 2011 Proposed Budget.
The Church Council with the guidance of the Stewardship Committee and the Treasurer, have put in endless
hours working on tightening up the budget, as well as expanding it to include a ―second pastor‖ position, with
an additional part-time Administrative Assistant.
Information is available on the tables in the Gathering Area explaining the process of calling of a ―2nd Pastor‖,
and also giving information as to what a ―2nd Pastor‖ at Peace would do. If you cannot find what you are
looking for, please contact Carla in the Church Office.
A Call Committee has been put together by the Executive Committee of the Church Council. Their names will
be announced during the Annual Meeting if we elect to call a ―2nd Pastor‖.
There will be 2 informational forums on the budget which includes a second pastor and part-time administra-
tive assistant. They will be conducted on January 16th and 23rd at 9:15 in the Chapel for those who would
like a closer look at the budget information, or have any questions.

Thank you to all the volunteers who make Peace Lutheran Church what it is today.
12/12/10—That may be a date you will probably remember for a long time.
Some may call it “The Great Blizzard of 2010”. I’m sure it changed some of your plans. It did cause us to cancel church.
We’re glad everyone was able to stay safe. We are not happy we could not wor-ship together. We are also not happy that there was no offering on that Sunday.
December was a critical financial time for the church. What members give in
December often helps decide how we end one year and begin another. We hope you did use the December 12th envelope you didn’t get to use because of
“The Great Blizzard…” We truly appreciate the gifts you give, especially the ones you can give right NOW.
