PRESIDENT’S JANUARY-FEBRUARY MESSAGE Editor’s Notes Page 3

It’s January, that time of the year when some people make a resolution to do something better in the future. The following is a list of things that antique car enthusiasts can do themselves to save

money and/or easily learn to do to maintain their vehicle(s). No matter what you do, use extreme caution to protect your eyes, skin, fingers, etc.

Battery: Use baking soda to clean corrosion of battery terminals; Keep the battery cables clean; Check the electrolyte levels of the battery cells (unless it’s a sealed battery); Clean the ground cable.

Tires: Use a tire gauge regularly to check your tire pressure; This is a safety check and helps save on fuel consumption and wear and tear of tires; Learn to fix a leaky tire valve or replace the valve; Rotate your tires.

Engine Compartment: Change your oil frequently making sure you use the proper weight; Replace oil filter; Clean or change sparkplugs and wires; Repair or replace hoses; Replace the alternator; Replace the thermostat; Keep an eye on the water level in the radiator; Replace the coolant in a timely fashion; Check the transmission fluid regularly and fill, if necessary; Fix a leaky valve cover or replace it.

Brakes and Wheels: Replace brake fluid; Check the wheel studs and replace, if necessary; Refinish wheels and wheel covers.

Headlights and Rear Lights: Check bulbs and replace dim or non-functioning bulbs; Clean foggy headlight fixtures; Replace broken lights.

Windows: Lubricate or replace old weather-stripping; Lubricate the window tracks; Keep windshield clean at all times; Clean or replace wiper blades and/or wipers.

Interior: Keep carpeting and/or floor mats clean (vacuum regularly to keep sand and dirt from being imbedded); Make sure rearview mirror is securely attached; fix your horn; replace power antenna.

Exterior: Keep vehicle waxed to help prevent rust; If rust appears, clean it and use a protective film to prevent further damage; Use touchup paint to cover chipped paint.

Trailers: Check the tires and wheel bearings, replace if necessary; Free up stuck trailer hitches; Fix bad wiring; Check to see if signal and/or brake lights work.

Frozen nuts and bolts: Use the proper lubricant, rust penetrant and/or repair kit to free up nuts, bolts, or a sticking hood latch.

Remember, you want to enjoy your antique. To do that, you need to pamper it to keep it running. Have a happy and healthy new year!

Jean

Happy New Year to all my car enthusiast friends. May 2019 bring you many blessings, peace and health. We had a fantastic Holiday season and an amazing holiday party. If you didn’t attend, you missed a great party with fantastic food. We had our now-famous gift exchange and we recognized this year’s Most Valuable Member, Millie Garcia. Thank you for all you do for the club. Millie put the Holiday party together for us, directed all the club’s social events this year and put up with me; that alone deserves a trophy! Now on to one of my personal favorite club events, ”Art Deco Weekend”, held on Miami Beach in the historic Art Deco District on January 19-20. Two days of car and shopping fun with VIP parking right on Ocean Drive! Don’t miss it! Then, following one and one half month later, the Mercedes-Benz of Coral Gables Biltmore Way Classic Car Show takes place on Sunday, March 3rd. This is our annual judged show. We are now a year away from our National Meet. We are full steam ahead with the preparations and invite you to come and join us at our monthly meetings as we start to piece together this incredible event. Every one of you is a valuable piece of that puzzle. So, stick with your New Year’s resolutions and get out and drive your cars! Looking forward to seeing you at our upcoming events. See you down the road.

Thank you,

Manny Garcia

Page 6 DEERING ESTATE VINTAGE AUTO SHOW (continued from page 1)

Submitted by Jean Hawa

On a spectacular mid-fall Sunday in South Florida, the Deering Estate opened its beautiful grounds for our 6th Annual Vintage Auto Show for pre-1960 vehicles. As you will see, we had a variety of vehicles ranging from 1928 to 1959. The 32 cars and trucks were placed in chronological order from the Richmond Cottage along the southern edge of the great lawn and then parallel to Biscayne Bay. Also on display in front of the Stone House was the resident 1950 International Harvester truck.

Our supporter, Williamson Automotive Group, provided four fine examples of their current models on the field, making a startling contrast between old and new. Many visitors came to the Deering Estate to see the antiques. Joining us throughout the day were a flock of pelicans that flew overhead, a beautiful Great Egret, and a herd of manatees, also known as the sea cow, a large aquatic relative of the elephant and Florida’s state endangered marine mammal. The overall comment was that it was a perfectly gorgeous day to have a car show. Activities for young and old were plentiful. Car owners submitted photographs of portions of their cars which became clues on paper for a scavenger hunt for children. It was a thrill watching the kids get excited as they matched the photo to the various cars. Even some of the adults joined in on the fun. There were old fashion lawn games and plenty of tasty food from the Sports Grill. The car owners and their families enjoyed a

leisure day in the 444-acre park overlooking Biscayne Bay. Besides going on guided historical house tours and natural area tours, they talked with the many visitors about their cars, picnicked, and kicked off their shoes to relax. Most of all, it was a very pleasant Sunday in the park.

The increased success of the show is due to many factors. I am thankful to all the car owners who brought out their cars. The staff members of the Deering Estate were so helpful with parking and setting up tents for us. Through the generosity of the Deering Estate, the car owners were able to obtain a one-year membership to the park. No car show can be accomplished without the help of other club members. Very instrumental were: Mike Penn obtained financial support from Williamson Automotive Group;

Bob Squier created the windshield cards, photographed the cars and helped with registering the cars along with Philip Williams; and Maurice Hawa helped with signage and parking.

Historical Notes: In the first decade of the 20th century, real estate developers promoted Florida as a “fantasy land” for wealthy vacationers and potential investors. In 1922 Charles Deering chose a Mediterranean Revival design for his 13,900 square foot Stone House to remind him of his properties near Barcelona, Spain and to provide him with a fire-resistant repository for his collection of fine art and antiques. With its massive stone facades, boxy shape and decorative arches and columns, the house was intended to look like a centuries-old Spanish fortress. In reality its construction took only eleven months.

Mediterranean Revival buildings were proved suitable for Miami’s climate: thick walls insulated interiors from heat; windows admitted cool breezes, and covered balconies, loggias, and walkways provided shade from intensive sunshine. More information about the Deering Estate, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, can be found at www.deeringestate.org .

The resident International Harvester 1950 Stake Bed Truck (3/4 ton L-120 Series, 90 HP, normally aspirated straight six-cylinder gasoline engine, 1-bbl carburetor, three speed manual transmission) was decorated and placed in front of the Stone House.

Page 8 PROGRESSIVE LUNCH – NOVEMBER 11, 2018

By Philip Williams

The day started out with the unique South Florida phenomenon of sunshine showers, but it didn’t deter the early risers who motored down to the home of Conrad Vazquez and Tania Santiago-Mirabel for a continental breakfast around the pool and under a tent as the last of the morning sun-showers tapered off. Then it was on to the grounds of East Ridge Retirement Community where we parked on the lawn and put our cars on display for the residents, many of whom remembered their days behind the wheel of cars like those on display. And then it was on to the home of Jay and Cheryl Mullininx who put out a luncheon spread that can only be described as sumptuous: roast beef, grilled chicken, potatoes with all the trimmings, and then the sugar-buzzing dessert selection. Good food, good friends, and a beautiful day. Thanks to all our hosts for opening their homes to us, East Ridge Retirement Community for inviting us, and to Manny and Millie Garcia for organizing this event. Page 10 HOLIDAY PARTY- DECEMBER 15, 2018

HOLIDAY PARTY BY PHILIP WILLIAMS

Even though we don’t get a white Christmas here in Miami, we still celebrate the holidays – all of them – with friends, food, and fun. This year’s AACA South Florida Holiday Party was all of that, thanks to the efforts and creativity of Millie Garcia, who earned the honor of Most Valuable Member of 2018 in no small measure due to her enthusiasm and cheerful attitude in planning all the club events.

The party was at the Renaissance Ballroom with plenty of great food and room to mingle with friends who share the hobby, plus new members of the Board of Directors. In our traditional bit of business, we swore in the Board for another year including new members Rudy Rodriguez, Al Padilla, and Timothy Merriman, Jr.. President Manny Garcia thanked all the board members for their efforts this year and looked forward to the events coming up, including Art Deco in January and the Coral Gables Show in March.

Then it was time to get down to the real business: the gift exchange, done in our new tradition of passing our presents along to the dulcet tones of Ken Kurtz as he read “A Visit from St. Nicholas” by Clement Clarke Moore. On every “and” the presents were passed, and we all had visions of sugar plums – or something – as the poem reached the end: “Happy Christmas to all AND to all a

good night!”

Submitted by Alex Fardales

Greetings!

It's now been four years since I've relocated to my new home in Suwannee County, and have been a member of the Suwannee River Region AACA based out of Lake City, Florida. As much as I miss my South Florida friends, the members of the SRRAACA have welcomed me with open arms to a club that is as much active and enthusiastic as my South Florida club.

First off is our monthly gathering every last Friday of the month at the Lake City Hardees off of Route 90. This is one gathering which attracts much cars and enthusiasts to our hobby, and is open to not only original antiques, but rods and customs as well. Even I participated by bringing out my Dodge Challenger which has become a large "crowd pleaser" to our events.

The month of July was not only hot, but vibrant as we participated at the Lakefront 4th of July event in Lake Butler, Florida. You can see several of our club's member's classic cars, including one of yours truly with a soon to be antique, a 1995 Mercury Cougar XR7.

Our other event was Saturday, July 28th in McAlpin, Florida, which is about 15 minutes from my home. Many quality cars were there, as well as a fully showroom restored 1957 Cadillac, and a prestigious 1926 Rolls Royce Phantom 1.

Alex stands in front of his 1995 Mercury Cougar XR7. The car used to belong to his father and has less than 79,000 miles. (continued on page 13)

45th Annual Turkey Rod Run, Daytona Beach, FL November 22nd-25th By Alex Fardales

For us car guys, The Daytona Turkey Rod Run has become just as much as a Thanksgiving tradition as Black Friday. While the rest of the country is braving frigid weather, standing in line literally for hours to do some Christmas shopping, we're here in Sunny Florida enjoying some of the finest, rarest, and exotic antique, classic, and hot rod cars from all over the U.S.A., and even some from Canada. Although the forecast called for rain, there was only a thunderstorm of sunshine, which brought temperatures well into the 80s. Only a slight shower Friday afternoon, which did not dampen any of the enthusiasts attending. As I've done every year since 2007, I have participated in the Rod Run attending Fridays and Saturdays, with my Dodge Challenger proudly displayed.

Last count, an approximate of 6,000 cars in attendance, and Saturday was it's best day. This year, the original Bat copter from the 1966 television series of Batman was displayed, along with a Batmobile and Bat cycle replica. The swap meet area was filled with various vendors selling parts, memorabilia, and automotive related items, but my main focus was the various show fields, and car corral.

Already looking forward to next year!

Louise Bianchi Chiotti Memorial Scholarship Award Louise (Bianchi) Chiotti was born on June 11, 1914 in San Jose California. The Family's first automobile was a 1926 Dodge Sedan. Her two younger brothers purchased a 1939 Studebaker and took delivery in January 1939. They wanted to give it to Louise's son Dave in 1956. His mother thought it too big of a car for a fifteen-year-old in San Francisco and talked him into buying a 1930 Model "A" Ford Coupe. In 1959 the little Ford was a bit slow, so Dave purchased a 1959 Ford convertible. As Dave sat on the running board of the Ford waiting for the new owner to arrive his mom came and sat next to him. "You really don't want to sell it do you?" she asked. "No, I don't was my reply." "Then don't," Mom said. Dave and Marilyn Chiotti still own the Model "A"; it is a Senior and First Place Grand National Award Winner. The 1939 Studebaker came to the Chiottis after spending 40 years under a walnut tree. It is now a Senior and First Place Grand National Award Winner. The 1926 Dodge was cut into a truck for ranch use in the 1940's. Dave brought it home in 1976 and built a Woodie. In 2000, they donated it to Luther Burbank Home & Gardens in Santa Rosa. After Dave and Marilyn's uncle's passing, they acquired their 1968 Cadillac El Dorado. It now lives in the AACA Museum in Hershey, PA. This $1,500 scholarship is based upon the same rules as the AACA Automotive Technology Award and is awarded as funds are available. It was instituted and funded by Dave and Marilyn Chiotti as a way to honor Louise and a way to continue to support youth in the hobby. How to Apply: Application forms may be obtained from AACA National
