Well we certainly started the year on a high. The 18th Summer Rock ‘n’ Roll Festi-val was held during the first weekend of January and what a great weekend it was. It was very well organised by the Festival Sub Committee led by Larry Devenish. A more detailed report is in this newsletter.

February saw our first monthly dance for the year with the great band "Speedsters". This band never disappoints the crowd. The floor is never empty when they play making sure that we all go home "tired" but a good tired from so much dancing. The room was very wonderfully decorated in the Valentine's Day theme by our Dance Sub Committee. Well done ladies you did a great job!

ance in the proper manner. My one stipulation to my committee at the beginning of my year was that everyone must respect each other and that we will all treat each other as we would like to be treated. Rock & Roll in a great pastime and we have all made some wonderful friends through this club and being a member of the committee of the Geelong Jukebox Rockers should also be a rewarding experience and one that they will never regret.

Now on a lighter note we will be holding our Thank You BBQ in the near future (date still to be advised) for all our wonderful members who tirelessly volun-teer to help out in the many and varied ways that you do. Watch this space!

Our classes began on Thursday 8th February with our new instructors Elva & Robin from Colac. Elva and Robin come to us with many years of experi-ence. They have taught several different styles of rock and roll but know that it is the old 50s style rock and roll that many people love to learn. Then when they've mastered that many look further to extending their knowledge by trying some of the other different styles available, if they so choose.

The first week, as is usually the case with every first night, we had quite a lineup of people coming along to learn rock and roll. We had quite a few returnees from 2017 but also quite a lot of first timers. It was great to see the 61 people get in and start the pro-cess of learning rock and roll. Of course, as is al-ways the case, there was more women than men and, following the feedback we received, we have ensured that the class runs in a rotating manner for those who wish to change partners. A big thank you to the members (men and those women who can dance the man's part) who came along to help out on the night it lead to only about 6 women who did-n't have a partner all night but with the rotating all were able to dance the steps with someone. We still have some tweaking to get it running like a well oiled machine but we should get there by the next class on the 22nd.

Last week's class saw all but 20 return but this was made up with 21 new comers who came along on that night. Elva and Robin have requested that we take no newcomers on from week 3 as, in their ex-perience (and that goes back many, many years), many of the people who start at the beginning and see it through get quite bored with having to go over and over the very basic rhythm steps each week that need to be taught to all new people when they first start. Of course these people will never be turned away they will be encouraged to put their names down immediately for the next block and asked to stay on and watch the night's class to get an idea of what they will be learning.

If there are any members (particularly males or women who can dance the male part) out there who are willing to give up an hour of their time to help on a Thursday (7pm - 8pm) please come along. There is no charge to you to help in the rotating circle and of course if you want to stay on and learn some new steps in the inter-mediate class that will only cost you $10.

Keep on Dancin’, have Fun and remember, respect for each other and a smile can be contagious!

We kick started the weekend on the 5th January with the Friday dance. What a great attendance, I believe a bit of a record. The night was attended by approx. 230 people and each were entertained by the wonderful Melbourne Band, The Fender Benders who were really rockin. The floor was full all night. They were ably accompanied by AC DJ (Andrew Camp) who kept everyone dancing through the band’s breaks as he did right throughout the weekend.

Saturday saw the first running of a Partner Workshop by Diane Pungitore. This was very favourably attended by patrons of the festival. The dances taught were the Coota Cha Cha, Rhumba Stroll and the Angel Waltz. The committee hopes to run workshops on the Monday night social nights to give everyone a chance to learn these fun partner dances. Saturday night saw our theme night “Gangsters & Flappers”. What a colourful night this was with so many dressing up in the era of the 20’s. There was some beautifully dressed “flappers” and some very well dressed “gangsters”. We were entertained all night by The Rousers who were also complimented with the continued music from AC DJ.

Both of these nights were great fun and I don’t think the floor was empty at all on each night.

Sunday saw the Family Day where we open up the festi-val, not only to our members, but to the public. There was many, many favourable comments about the change to the lay out. Most of the comments from our patrons were about how the set up made you feel more "involved" in the music and with everyone in attendance. The cover over the entire floor was a hit. The only com-ment there was "now you need a bigger floor". Having the cars surrounding the gazebos allowed them to seem more part of the weekend and having our stalls sur-rounding the "Piazza" area where people could sit and partake of the yummy variety of foods to be had was also a great idea.

We were fortunate to have three well loved Mel-bourne bands play during the day. We started with Fender Benders who played two terrific sets of music followed by Jump & Jive again with some fantastic music. The day finished with some more great music from Who Was That Cat. We are so lucky to have such great bands in our state who never fail to keep our feet moving in the style of dance we all love.

During the day our annual dance comps run, very ably coordinated by Fiona Barclay and Malcolm Bark-er.

There was seven categories that were contested and the winners are listed below (the complete list of win-ners and place getters is included in this newsletter);

Beginner/Novice - Wilf Gibson & Bev Hartland

Intermediate - Andrea Beckett & Maggie Grech

Adult Lifts - Andrew Camp & Ashley Tayner

Triples - John Hallifax, Judy Donald & Lee Walters

Juvenile 16 & Under - Joshua Pettit & Deborah Grif-fiths

45 & Over - Brian Coates & Kerry Bent-Hopkins

Adult Open Summer Rock & Roll Champions - Andrew Camp & Ashley Tayner.

A big thank you also to the stall holders who partici-pated in our weekend. We were able to get a great variety of stalls that catered for the many and varied.

Keeping in line with the Thanks. Thank you firstly to Larry Devenish who very tirelessly oversaw and ably led the sub committee in the organisation of this won-derful festival. To the Sub Committee, Julianne Rog-ers, Glenda Trainor, Noel Gilliland and in the early days Cass Allen, thank you to you all for the work you did to make the weekend special for everyone.

To all the volunteers, and there were many, thank you so much for volunteering your time on the week-end for the many various jobs that need to be cov-ered during such an event. This weekend would not have run as smoothly as it did without you all. A Thank You BBQ will be held shortly to show, albeit in a small way, how much you are appreciated for your assistance, and not just on this weekend but all through the year.

Thank you to all who brought along their special vehi-cles and showcased them at our festival. It was great to see so many there, considering what we have to go against with many other vehicle shows on around the state on the same weekend.

Thank you to White Eagle House for supporting us year after year to run our festival. Enabling us to have our two dances and then to run the Sunday Fes-tival day on their grounds. We are very lucky to have somewhere to hold a weekend highlighting the music that we all love.

Glenda Trainor, Vice President

Hi my name is Glenda Trainor I have been a mem-ber of Geelong Jukebox Rockers Since July 2012.

I worked at Ford Motor Company for 34 years doing various roles in the manufacturing industry. I even managed to become a Leading Hand for 10 years, in pretty much an all male industry. Enduring some life struggles along the way, it was a great achieve-ment. In 2016 I was made redundant. As we all know Ford Closed it was a very sad day for me and many of my colleagues. I am still currently unem-ployed and seeking employment.

About 6yrs ago I discovered Rock N Roll dancing, and with a Friend went along to the Geelong Juke-box Lessons. Feeling very afraid and nervous we paid our money and went in, not knowing what to expect. We were then told to form a circle (which I did) and watching the instructors strut their dance moves! I was thinking I’m never going to be able to do this! So then it began. As I progressed around the circle learning footwork and hand movements and meeting some great people. I decided it wasn’t too bad after all and was encouraged too come back the following week and the weeks after as I did. My friend stopped coming and I decided to keep going. And have been dancing ever since.

In 2014 I was asked to join in the Festival Floor Show, Priscilla, which was a lot of fun. Then backed it up in 2015 with The Blues Brothers and Robbie Palmer.

In 2014 I also became an ordinary committee mem-ber. Never in my wildest dreams had I thought I would be doing something like this! I enjoyed being on this committee and learnt so much along the way, with dance setups and what it involves in actu-ally getting a monthly dance up and running.

So I decided to keep going on the committee the following next 2yrs as well. I enjoyed it so much helping out getting involved with our Rock N Roll Festivals as well.

Lastly thank you to all of you, the members and anyone who just loves this great genre of music Rock & Roll. Thank you for supporting our week-end. There just wouldn’t be a festival without you.

Planning for the 19th Annual Festival in 2019 will very soon begin. If you would like to be part of the organising subcommittee please let one of the committee members know and we’ll put your name on the list.

In 2017 I decided to run for Vice President, not thinking I would actually get the position or be involved in a Rock n Roll Club in this capacity. But to my surprise I was voted in for this roll with the responsibility of helping out the Presi-dent and doing various committee roles along the way to keep this club going to the best of my ability.

I love dancing and love learning new things and meeting people.

During this time, I have met some great people who taught me many things and encouraged me to keep coming. A long the way I met Paul and the rest is history.

KEEP ON ROCKING!!

GJBR’s are sponsoring 2 events at this prestig-ious night and we have secured a table of 10 at reduced cost to each attendee. I believe there are still a couple of seats left. Please see Lea or Glenda if your interested. 19th May 2018 at the Hungarian Centre, in Wantirna (Flipside).

A man and a woman were married for many years. Whenever there was a confrontation, yell-ing could be heard well into the night.

The old man would shout “When I die, I will dig my way up and out of the grave and come back and haunt you for the rest of your life”

Neighbours feared him. The old man liked the fact that he was feared. Then one evening, he died when he was 98. After the burial, her neighbours concerned for her safety, asked “Aren’t you afraid that he may indeed be able to dig his way out of the grave and haunt you for the rest of your life?

The wife said “Let him dig. I had him buried up-side down …. And I know he won’t ask for direc-tions.” Boom Boom

Morris and his wife Ester went to the State Fair every year and every year Morris would say “Esther, I’d like to ride in that helicopter” Esther would always reply “I know Morris but that heli-copter ride is 50 dollars and 50 dollars is 50 dol-lars.

One year Esther and Morris went to the fair and Morris said, “Esther I’m 85 years old. If I don’t ride in that helicopter, I might never get another chance.” Esther replied “Morris that helicopter is 50 dollars and 50 dollars is 50 dollars.

The pilot overheard the couple and said “folks, I’ll make you a deal. I’ll take the both of you for a ride; if you can stay quiet for the entire ride and not say a word, I won’t charge you! But if you say one word, it’s 50 dollars”

Morris and Esther agreed and up they went. The Pilot did all kinds of fancy manoeuvres, but not a word was heard. He did his dare devil tricks over and over again but still not a word.

When they landed, the Pilot turned to Morris and said “by golly, I did everything I could to get you to yell out, but you didn’t. I’m impressed” Morris replies “well I almost said something when Es-ther fell out, but, you know, 50 dollars is 50 dol-lars!” Boom Boom

Ballarat Beat—Feb 8-11th 2018

By Bernadine Costin

Well what can I say, it was awesome. Loved Ezra Lee, he is in a class of his own. I attended the lessons on the Sun-day with the people in the wine bar, definitely worth doing next year.

The lack of air conditioning in the lounge was very uncom-fortable but it didn’t bother me personally, I just danced regardless. Absolutely fabulous weekend, will be definitely back next year and well done to everyone involved.

By Lyn Johnson

What a great weekend we all had, perfect weather, fabu-lous music and lots to spend your money on girls :).

We attended the Black Hat Daddies dance on the Saturday night with The Fender Benders and had a brilliant night, they never disappoint. It was good to see quite a few of us Jukebox Rockers there supporting Ballarat and hopeful-ly we will see some of the dancers and stall holders at our next festival.
