Dear Greystone Members, Welcome to 2014! Another year has flown by. It is hard to believe we are entering our fifth year as a

member-owned club. It seems like yesterday we were assuming ownership during a trying financial time for all. Now, four years later, we have weathered the financial downturn well and are positioned to grow and improve our stability long-term at Greystone. I would like to take a moment to thank some of the people from 2013 that have gotten us here. Thanks to Steve Vanderburg and the Board for an excellent year of stewardship and the countless hours of time they donated. Come and celebrate with us at the President’s Dinner on January 11th to honor Steve. I would also like to thank the staff led by Calvin Bolling for providing us with a great year of service and events that have allowed this to be one of our best years in member utilization in the Club’s history. Now is the time to push forward to continue to bring the Club to the level that we know it can be. To do this, we will continue to need member participation in all areas. I would like to ask that each of you consider volunteering for a committee. Our membership governance begins at the committee level and we need your talent. Our committees, their focus, and chairman are listed to the right. If interested in serving, let me, the Chairman, or Mallory, [email protected] know. I would also like to encourage each of you to continue to utilize your Club. This helps us financially and gives us the critical mass we need to provide top quality programs and services going forward. Lastly and probably most importantly, we need to continue to recruit new members. We have streamlined our membership offerings over the last two years and there has never been a better time to join. In closing, I anticipate 2014 being a very successful year and look forward to serving as your President. Sincerely,

Jeff Clifton, 2014 President [email protected] (205) 790-3771

OPEN GOLF GROUPS

At Greystone, we pride ourselves on being one of the friendliest Club in the Southeast. Our membership is welcoming and hospitable – an undeniably excellent group of individuals.

For our golfing members, finding a golf game with a fellow member or group of members isn’t quite the task it may be elsewhere. Almost every day of the week we have Open Golf Groups that anyone can join. Our newer members or those who want to join a game can meet, create a game, enjoy a round, and make new friends. Everyone experiences a time when plans change at the last minute and that is where “Open Groups” become your saving grace. There are four groups actively welcoming new players. Here is a short description of what they do and what you can expect:

Misfits – Play each Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 9:00-10:00am based upon the season. They currently have approximately 12-16 players each day. They play a $5 game of dogfight points. Teams are made up prior to teeing off.

POGO’s – Play Friday at 1:00pm, Saturday at 8:30am, and Sunday at 8:10am. When Daylight Savings Time begins, their Friday time moves to noon. They form two man teams and play four-ball (best known as best ball of twosome). It costs $20 to get in the game and the pro shop helps with the pairings.

Single Digits – Play Friday at 12:00pm, Saturday at 8:30am, and Sunday 11:30am. When Daylight Savings Time begins, their Friday time moves up a bit. They form two or four man teams and play either Four-ball (best known as best ball of twosome) or team quota points. There is also a skins game involved. It costs $20 to get in the game and the Commissioner (Allen Franklin) usu-ally makes the pairings.

Die Hards – Play Saturday at 9:10am and Sunday at 12:10am. They form two to three man teams based upon the number of players. The format is four-ball (best known as best ball). It costs $10 to get in the game and the pro shop makes the pairings.

This is just a short description of the format of the different games. We ask that you please call us at (205) 986-5126 your first time joining a group so we can help you with any and all information you might need. You may also contact us via email:

Steve Smith – [email protected]

Dave Kuykendall – [email protected]

Darrell Ward – [email protected]

As always we look forward to making your time here at “the Stone” a special experience!

WELCOME MARK BLACKBURN

DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION

Originally from England, Mark Blackburn arrived in America in 1994 on a college golf scholarship. A multiple Lettermen and Team Captain at The University of Southern Mississippi, Mark received a BS in Coaching & Exercise Science. While playing professionally, inconsistencies and injury led to

questioning golf’s geometry and teaching theories. The answers transitioned into a coaching philosophy that applies a holistic sport science approach. Diagnosing poor golf patterns through a medical approach, then validating those findings and corrections with technology is the key to improved golf performance. Blackburn Golf, www.blackburngolf.com was founded in 2000. Mark a Certified PGA Member, TPI CGP LIII & GSEM continues to work with golfers of all levels. The Blackburn Golf Teaching Philosophy focuses on each student’s unique physical characteristics to develop an efficient and repeatable technique:

Producing the necessary impact alignments for consistent ball control is always related to the body - swing connection. Lessons follow a holistic approach applying aspects of biomechanics, kinesiology,

and psychology through technology. There is no one method or swing style for all golfers. Rather, the instructor must develop an efficient and repeatable motion based on the student’s

functional movement screening. Utilizing their physiology, a student will then learn the necessary stability, mobility and power sources unique to their stroke pattern whether putting, pitching

or driving the ball.

Mark was the Dixie Section PGA Teacher of The Year in 2008, 2009 & 2010, a finalist for The PGA National Teacher of The Year 2010-2014, Dixie Section Horton Smith Award winner in 2011, a Member of the TPI Advisory Board, on the Titleist Leadership Advisory Staff, A Golf Digest Top 40 Teacher in America Under 40 and one of Golf Magazine’s Top 100 Teachers in America. Blackburn Golf coaches juniors, club golfers, elite amateurs, college and professional clients from around the world. On the PGA Tour, clients who have utilized Mark’s coaching include: Heath Slocum, Robert Karlsson, Kevin Chappell, Chad Campbell, YE Yang, Bill Lunde, Arjun Atwal, Bobby Gates, Boo Weekley, Nathan Green, & Brian Gay.

Dear Members, The times are changin' and I think the older I get, the more I realize that this is soooo true. Each year at this time I get excited about the changes coming in 2014. Not only our personal lives but in the life of our Club, and in the golf operation specifically.

In 2014, I have visions of improved golf games, new faces on our staff (intern program), hot new trends in golf from the PGA show as well new and bigger goals. I didn’t even mention those new clubs that’ll help us hit it further, straighter, higher (can you feel it?). Well, it looks like that time is now upon us and it’s time to embrace 2014. What are some of the changes we'll see this year?

Here are just a few:

There are over 87+ new entries to the USGA Decisions/USGA Rules manual 2014-2015. Visit USGA.org if you have some time and want to read up on them. One of those new rules is no use of HD technology to help figure out if a ball has moved from its original situation (Tiger Woods BMW Championship 2013).

The Golf Channel has a new logo.

Cardigans and turtle necks are making a comeback as well as golfing dress shirts and ties (made for the discriminating golfer who wants to play in a shirt & tie).

A new golf shirt that stores energy in its fibers and releases it in the form of heat when your body starts to get colder... it’s called Thermal Regulation Technology.

ProQuipUSA has created a $150 half-zip lambs wool sweater that has a water-repellent finish and a "Ouimet 100" logo. (The 100th anniversary of Francis Ouimet's U.S. Open victory.) A portion of the proceeds of each sweater go to the Foundation to help fund the Ouimet Scholarship. You might remember the story of Francis Ouimet from the movie “The Greatest Game Ever Played.”

Some of those things are out there a bit, but that’s what makes golf so cool. You get to express yourself with what you wear, how you play, or both. So don’t worry about putting plaids and checks together... “its all good.” Talking about good, please remember we’re always striving to make Greystone the best it can be by meeting the needs of our members.

We always welcome your comments to assist us. I’m looking forward to the New Year. Hold tight, 2014’s here and it’s going to be great!

Dear Members,

Another holiday season is behind us, and we hope this finds everyone having enjoyed a wonderful time with friends and family. As 2013 comes to a close, the TaylorMade Performance Lab would

like to thank all of you who supported us this year. You made this year the most successful year to date in the three years the Performance Lab has been open. This year, the Performance Lab fit more players, generated more reve-nue, and helped to produce some memorable results for many players. Here are some interesting facts from 2013…

288 Total Fittings performed in 2013.

$210,000 in total revenue generated.

TMPL Birmingham-Greystone doubled its merchandise sales from 2012.

(The only Lab location in the country to do so.)

64% of all Performance Lab customers were guests.

24% of all guests were referred to the Lab from past customers.

20% of all guests were referred to the Lab from other Golf Facilities.

Ten players made Hole-in-one’s within two months of using their new irons.

Four players posted personal best scores within two weeks of first using their new clubs.

Highest recorded Club Head Speed was Connor Pratt at 123 MPH.

Four PGA, Web.com, LPGA, & Champions Tour players visited the Lab this year for fittings.

Fifteen NCAA Collegiate Golfers were fit in the Performance Lab.

Alabama Girls Junior Champion was fit in the Performance Lab.

Chang Yan Tan from Xining-Qinghai, China wins the award for player from the farthest away.

Nineteen states and six countries have now been represented by patrons of the Performance

Lab since its inception.

As the Performance Lab heads into its fourth year, it is difficult to imagine we will be able to surpass some of the large strides we have made in a seemingly short three years. We are continuing to search for new and creative ways to market what we do, and the experience we provide. Obviously, we will become more and more dependent upon patrons who come from outside the Greystone Membership. We are excited to announce a new MEMBER’S REFERRAL Program. Any member who refers 5 players into the Lab for Full Fittings (January 1, 2014 - November 30, 2014), will receive a driver fitting, and the driver they were fit…. FOR FREE!! We would also like to remind all of our Members, that a Fitting makes a great experience if you are looking to treat a favorite customer (for all of you business owners and sales executives), or if you would like to show appreciation to an employee for a job well done. We are excited at the many new opportunities that 2014 will bring our way. We look forward to integrate what we do in the Lab, with the teaching goals and programs of our new Director of Golf Instruction, Mark Blackburn. And, most of all, we look forward to the challenge of trying to make each and every player that spends time in the Lab, a better golfer.
