Living in the Future
+ Q&A(Helen Iles, Wales 2012, 48mins)
This documentary tells the story of
the UK’s first planned ecovillage,
Tir y Gafel, in Pembrokeshire. It
shows how the nine families living
there have created their own
natural homes and gardens, driven
by an urgent need to renew their relationship with the land.
Through environmental design, green technology and
permaculture, it explores how communities might live more
sustainably in the future. Followed by a live video Q&A
session with Jane Davidson, former Minister for
Environment, Sustainability and Housing in Wales.

Sightseers(Ben Wheatley,
UK 2012, 89mins)
Edgar Wright
(Shaun of the
Dead) produces
Ben Wheatley’s
hugely enjoyable
black comedy. Chris wants to show Tina his world and he
wants to do it his way - on a journey through the British Isles
in his beloved caravan. But it doesn't take long for the
dream to fade. Litterbugs and noisy teenagers, not to
mention Tina's meddling mother, soon conspire to shatter
Chris's dreams and send him, and anyone who rubs him up
the wrong way, over a very jagged edge...
25th Jan – 7th Feb
Les Misérables (Tom Hooper, UK 2012,
158mins)
From the director of The
King’s Speech, this is a
critically
acclaimed spectacular
interpretation of Victor Hugo’s
beloved stage musical, set
against the backdrop of 19th
Century France.

Last Shop
Standing + Q&A with
Graham Jones(Pip Piper, UK 2012,
50mins)
Inspired by Graham
Jones’ book, this film
takes you behind the
counter to discover why nearly 2000 record shops have
already disappeared across the UK. The film charts their
rapid rise in the 1960s, 70s and 80s, the influence of the
chart, the underhand deals, the demise of vinyl and rise of
the CD as well as new technologies. Record shops were
always more than just retail outlets, they were part of our
culture. So what happened?

Holy Motors (Leos Carax, France 2012,
116mins)
A unique and visually striking
film that was one of the toasts
of this year's Cannes Film
Festival.
Apparently inspired by the
filmmaker's fascination with the
afterhours life of stretch
limousines, Denis Lavant plays
Monsieur Oscar who, over the course of a single day, takes on
10 other guises, ranging from a gangster and ageing millionaire
to a troubled parent and anarchic tramp.
14th – 16th Jan

Hubbard, 16th Jan(Jeff Orlowski, USA 2012,

The story of photographer

undeniable evidence of our changing planet by
deploying revolutionary time-lapse cameras to capture the

videos their rapid decline shows the seemingly unstoppable
effect of global warming.
14th – 16th Jan
Untouchable(Olivier Nakache, Eric
Toledano, 112mins,
subtitled)
Based on a true story, this is
the highest grossing French
film ever made, beating
The Artist by a long shot.
A disabled millionaire
(François Cluzet) hires a
new carer whose wholly
inappropriate street-wise
attitude proves to be the
start of an unlikely
friendship.
Nominated for nine 2012
César Awards, this
enjoyable film is highly recommended.
18th – 24th Jan

UK 2012, AD,
98mins)
Maggie Smith stars
as a
former “grande
dame” of the opera
who moves into a
new home for retired
singers. But her
arrival rustles more
than a few feathers
of the residents who
feel their annual
Verdi concert is under threat. As the concert’s plans start
unravelling, old grudges and theatrical temperaments begin to
play havoc… Also stars Billy Connolly, Tom Courtney, Michael
Gambon and Pauline Collins.

They Made
Me a
Fugitive (Alberto
Cavalcanti, UK,
1947, 99mins)
Full of visual
invention, this is a terrific film noir starring Trevor Howard
as a war hero down on his luck who briefly falls in with a
pack of East End gangsters. After being framed and sent
to prison, he escapes to take his revenge.
23rd Jan
L’Atalante (Jean Vigo,
France
1934, 89 mins)
Jean, a barge
captain,
marries an innocent
country girl and the
two climb aboard
Jean’s boat, the
L’Atalante—
otherwise populated by an earthy first mate and a
multitude of mangy cats—to embark on their new life
together. Both a surprisingly erotic idyll and a clear-eyed
meditation on love, Vigo’s only feature-length work is a film
like no other.
