From the Editors Desk...

This week, I was reminded to be thankful for the small things.

Late last week, my vehicle was acting odd and we decided to park

it until we could get it to the shop. With plans to bring it to the

repair shop the next day, I was driving my kids to school on

Monday in our backup “beater truck” when it broke down.

After cursing a little (okay, maybe a little more than a little) and

calling in the reinforcements, I got the kids out of the truck to go

to a nearby gas station. While we were walking it occured to me

that in the grand scheme of things, I was fortunate in many

ways... That I broke down on the day of -3 rather than the day of

-31; That I was almost at the school and was in walking distance

of a gas station; That my husband works from home and could

come get us; That I remembered to bring my cell phone with me.

It was a good reminder to me that while I was fortunate that day,

next time I might not be so lucky. When the kids were smaller I

used to always have an emergency kit, including extra clothing

and food in the car just in case. December and early January’s

Chinooks were wonderful, but we do live in rural western

Alberta where “if you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes”. If

last weeks cold snap was any indicator, winter is not yet done

with us. Take a few extra minutes to be prepared, it may make

all the difference.

Over the weekend of January 14-15 the Cremona Cowbys Tyke Travelteam were involved in the Banff Minor Hockey Initiation Tournament.With a well fought 2 day round robin event, the Tyke team tied for 3rdplace. Thanks to all the parents, coaches and volunteers that made thisa fun event for all the kids.

The Death of a Pet, and the Topicof Euthanasia

The loss of a beloved pet can be adevastating event for people.Everyone must deal with it in theirown way. It can be a difficult topicto talk about, but I wanted to shedsome light on the topic to help youin the event that you are faced withsuch a loss. As a veterinarian, I dealwith death a lot. It is sad, but it is afact of life and of this profession.Sometimes an animal is found deadfrom an accident, sudden illness,poisoning or injury. Sometimes ananimal is very sick or injured andcannot be treated/cured. Some aresick or injured, but the owner cannotafford to or chooses not to havethem treated/cured. In some cases,an animal may even becomedangerous to people or destructiveto property and must be put down toensure human safety. It is actuallyvery rare for a pet to die at homewithout suffering greatly first. Itseems that we all hope we will nothave to make the decision to haveour pet euthanized. We want themto die in their sleep or pass awaywith no warning, but this just doesnot happen very often in the realworld. If you have a pet, then it isvery likely that you will have to dealwith the topic of euthanasiaeventually.

Euthanasia

The definition of “euthanasia” is “aneasy and painless death”, or “thedeliberate ending of life”. Themethod of euthanasia that is mostcommon involves the injection of alethal dose of a drug (a barbituratecalled pentobarbital) that renders theanimal unconscious, and quicklystops the heart and lungs fromworking. These drugs are strictlycontrolled, and can only beadministered by a licensedveterinarian. Euthanasia methodsfor large farm animals (horses,cattle, sheep, etc) are somewhatdifferent, and I will write about thatat a later date, as it is a whole othertopic.

I have a lot of people tell me thatthey could never be a veterinarian,because they could never kill ahealthy, happy animal - especially ayoung one. I find this somewhathumorous, because I can’t do thateither! The vast majority of animalsthat veterinarians must euthanize(put down) are animals that aresuffering with serious illness orinjury, and it is a kindness to endtheir pain. Being legally able to helpthese pets to die in a dignified, painfree way, surrounded by their loved

ones is a privilege I take veryseriously as a veterinarian. Beforewarned that your veterinarian isnot “required” to euthanize youranimal just because you ask them toand are willing to pay them to. Ifyou call your veterinary clinic toschedule the euthanasia of your pet,be prepared to answer somequestions about why you are doingso. If your pet has not seen aveterinarian recently for a check up,you may be asked to bring them infor a consultation/examination soyou and your veterinarian candiscuss the issues your pet is havingand decide together whethereuthanasia is the right choice at thattime. We know this is difficult foryou, but we must know thecircumstances involved before wewill end your pet’s life. Experiencehas shown me that there are a lot ofpeople that have left their pet’schronic health issues untreated foryears, and then want the peteuthanized because they are “old”.“Old Age” is not a disease! In somecases, the pet must indeed be putdown due to the severity of theirproblems or because the owner isunable or unwilling to pay for thehigh costs that may be involved indiagnosis and treatment. However,in other cases, clients have beenamazed when we can diagnose andtreat their pet’s condition, and givethem many more years of qualitytime together when they thoughtthere was no hope.

How do you know when it is time

to euthanize your pet?

This is a very stressful situation formost pet owners. If the pet has beendiagnosed and treated appropriatelyfor whatever is ailing it, but thingshave progressed beyond the limits ofmedical or surgical treatment, andyour pet is now suffering, then it istime to consider euthanasia. Wemeasure suffering in animals in afew ways. Consider your pet’s“Quality of Life”. How much“quality” is your pet getting from hisor her life? Is he still doing most ofthe things you know he loves to do?Does he still come and greet you atthe door or is he too sore or painfulto even get up? Does he still like toeat, or does it seem like you have tocoax him to eat? Can he still gooutside to do his “business”? Doeshe still try and interact with youthrough the day? If the answer is noto any of these questions, and thebad days start to outnumber thegood days, it may be time. If youare having trouble deciding, speak toyour veterinarian about it, and askthem for their personal andprofessional opinion. The thing is,

YOU have to be ready and willing tomake this decision. No one canmake it for you. You know your petbetter than anyone else, includingyour veterinarian. When we arefamiliar with you, your pet, and theircondition, and you say it is time, wewill respect that decision and try tomake this as easy as possible on youboth.

What are your options? (Home

euthanasia vs clinic euthanasia)

You can have your pet euthanized atyour home (if your veterinarian islicensed and willing to do house-calls), or you can bring them to theveterinary clinic. If you plan on ahome burial, home euthanasia is anice option. Not every vet offersthem, so you need to ask about it.The vet needs a well-lit space(indoors preferably), with a poweroutlet nearby in case they need toshave hair off the pet to place the IV.There needs to be enough room forthe vet to get down beside or in frontof your pet to place the IV. If the vetis able to bring an assistant, they willhelp the vet by holding the pet whilethe IV is put in. However, if anassistant is not available, then youmust have someone willing to helpthe veterinarian. This can bedifficult for some owners if they arehaving a tough time emotionally. Ifyou don`t plan on a home burial,keep in mind that after a homeeuthanasia, you or the veterinarianwill need to transport the body forproper disposal/cremation. Thisinvolves placing your pet into abody bag, and moving the body to avehicle. This is sometimes hard forowners see when they are goingthrough such an emotionalheartbreak.

If you don’t plan on a home burial, Istrongly recommend taking your petto the veterinary clinic foreuthanasia. The staff should be ableto book you a time when the clinic isnot too busy. We realize you willnot want a bunch of people seeingyou so upset, and we don’t want torush you at all or feel rushedourselves. The clinic settingprovides a more controlledenvironment with proper lighting,the proper tools, and a lot of extrahands/help available if needed. Youcan choose to be in the room for theeuthanasia, or you can say yourgoodbyes and leave the pet in ourgentle, capable hands and wait in thewaiting room or even leave thebuilding. You can view the bodyafterward if you want/need to. Justmake your wishes known to theveterinary staff ahead of time, andthey will do everything they can to

accommodate you. We know this isa sensitive and difficult time for you.Once your pet is deceased and youhave left, we will take care of therest (the body bag, and storageand/or transport of the body to acremation facility). Keep in mindthat you may be more distraughtthan you thought you would, soplease bring someone with you thatcan drive you home safely. On theother hand, some people are lessemotional than they thought theywould be. This is ok, and we do notjudge you. Everyone grievesdifferently, and we realize this. Itdoes not mean you loved your petless.

How will it go?

There are a number of differentmethods for euthanizing dogs andcats. Each veterinarian has theirown ‘favourite’ methods. That is,methods which they have personallyfound to be less stressful for thepets, the vet, and the owner. Ingeneral, the most common methodin dogs is to place an IV catheterinto your pet’s vein, and then injectthe euthanasia solution into the vein.Death is within minutes when thismethod is used. In cats, placing anIV can be difficult, as cats are lesscooperative and the vein is verysmall. Many vets will sedate the catheavily first so they won’t feelanything, and then inject theeuthanasia solution directly into theheart. Some situations (like a dogthat is trying to bite) requiresedation before an IV is placed.Your vet should explain to you howthey plan to proceed before they getstarted. Please feel free to ask themwhat their plan is – this is yourexperience and it helps if there areno surprises. They may not realizethat you don’t know what to expect.What many people don’t realize isthat euthanasia appointments areone of the most stressful experiencesfor veterinarians – especiallyrelatively new veterinarians. Wewant this to go smoothly, and we arenot sure how you or your pet willreact to the situation. ALLveterinarians have experienced a“bad” euthanasia at one time oranother, so we do all we can toprevent our clients from having togo through such a situation.

Once the injection is completed, theveterinarian will listen for theheartbeat to be sure it isslowing/stopping, and then check afew reflexes to make sure the pet isdeceased. In some cases, anadditional injection of the drug mayneed to be given, or they will wait

Do you like food? Have you evereaten food from a food truck?Have you ever watched the FoodChannel show called Eat St.?

Well, Eat St. are having a contestwhere 57 food trucks from all overNorth America – New York, LosAngeles, Calgary, Dallas-FortWorth, Houston, Phoenix,Vancouver and………

The little hamlet of Westcott –right here in Mountain ViewCounty!

And guess what? Mountain ViewCounty’s own Jo & Duane Klitzke,the creators, owners and operatorsof Westcott Country Kitchen are insecond place so far

Jo signed up to be a vendor truckon the Eat St. website in Novemberand shortly a few days laterreceived an invitation from Eat St.to submit a 90 second video forthis contest. Jo thought “This couldbe our big break” and startedjotting down ideas – why are wedifferent, why should people votefor us, what do we bring to thefood truck industry that nobodyelse does. A few ideas came tomind:No deep fryers or grillsEverything is homemade – nofrozen fries or burgersAlmost all the meals freeze &reheat beautifullyNo preservativesSource as much locally as possibleGreat deal of the ingredients to hermeals come from her own garden

She decided on a “Field ofDreams” theme. Since WestcottCountry Kitchen is truly in themiddle of nowhere “if you cook it,they will come” came to mind. Jocontacted Phil Harrison, a longtime close friend of her sonClayton. Jo has been feeding Philher home cooking since she & herfamily moved to Alberta in 1994.Luckily Phil owns his own

company & is a professionalvideographer, and he has hadconsiderable experience workingwith the Food Channel.

Now, for a theme song! Jo hasspent her entire career in software,but her real passions are cookingand gardening. Jo, yet anothervictim of downsizing, decided tostart Westcott Country Kitchen. It’sbeen a continual uphill struggle,yet very rewarding, hence shechose Queen’s “Don’t Stop MeNow – I’m Having Such a GoodTime” as the theme song.

Jo then recruited dozens of herregular customers to come to thetiny hamlet of Westcott for thefilming (with the promise of freefood!) Unfortunately, the audioportion of the video was damagedby a faulty camera card at the firstfilming session, so the filming hadto be repeated the followingSaturday as well, where Jocontinually asked Phil for a “soundcheck”! Good thing Phil is a goodsport!

After the film was edited and Jo,Duane & Phil were happy, theysubmitted it to Eat St. Shortlyafterward they got an e-mail fromCorrey Dilley from Eat St. wholoved the story line and the choiceof music.

What was supposed to be a 2 weekvoting window was extended dueto lack of entries. Jo’s friendsurged her to use the timedrumming up support. Jo did justthat and frankly annoyed a bunchof people with her perpetualfacebook blasts and e-mails. Jo’sreasoning was “if they are reallymy friend on facebook, then theywould want to support me. Theycan change Notifications or“Unfriend” me. I’m sorry but Ihaven’t paid myself in close to 2years so this is extremelyimportant to me!”

Ironically, Jo’s “Friend” base onfacebook has grown by leaps andbounds! More people also “Like”Westcott Country Kitchen’sfacebook page and visits to theirw e b s i t ewww.westcottcountrykitchen.comhave quadrupled.

“What happened was aphenomenon” said Jo. “When thevoting finally opened up onJanuary 5th, we asked people toreport their votes and we wouldenter their name in a draw for a$50 gift certificate for our greatfood. Lots of people were longdistance fans who said if theirname was drawn to give $50 to thefood bank instead. More and moreof this was happening with peopleright here in Mountain ViewCounty! I was astounded, reallymoved to tears. So I announced onJanuary 8th that as of midnight thatevery vote cast for WCK andreported to us we would donate 50cents to the food bank.”

Eat St. caught wind of this andwanted to know if it was true. Jothought they’d broken some rules,went back and re-read the rules andit didn’t seem to be the case. Whenshe contacted Eat St. to admit that,well, yes, it is true – Eat St. wantedto do a write up about it!

It was a bit daunting at first whenthe Klitzke’s saw where theircompetition was based. “In fact,and this is really interesting, I thinkwe stand a BETTER chancebecause we aren’t big city. Nobodyknow their neighbors in the city –probably the food trucks don’tknow a dozen of their customer’snames. We even know where they

live! We call our customers whenwe’re heading to Carstairs (forexample) for the day – do you needcabbage rolls, sausage rolls,fudge….AND we’ll deliver it rightfrom The Kitchen on Wheels”

When it’s not 40 below zero, like ithas been for the past few weeks, Jolikes to haul The Kitchen onWheels around to different townsin Mountain View County to feedher great homemade food at lunchtime. “The towns are too small tobuy from us every day of the weekso we like to move around.”Westcott Country Kitchen havealso taken over management of thecafé at the Olds Auction Martwhere anyone can drop in for ameal, to pick up some frozen mealsor some freshly baked bread orcookies!

Chilling at Charm Beach

After arriving at Charm Beach, weregrouped in our room andemerged refreshed and ready toeat. We were too lazy to goanywhere so we sat down atresort's beach restaurant andordered what turned out to be adelicious Thai meal. Gordon thenset us up with a jug of Song Somrum, a bucket of ice, and a bigbottle of Coke. We went back toour balcony overlooking the pool,and whiled away the rest of theevening sipping cocktails andenjoying the tranquility.

I slept like a log last night, myslumber enhanced by the quietsetting, a decent bed, and an A/Csystem that managed the rare featof providing just the righttemperature, neither too warm nortoo cold, and quietly, to boot. I

awoke full of vim and vigour, andwandered down to the beach,where I am composing thismasterpiece. It’s cloudy today, so itmight not be too scorching toexplore what promises to be a veryinteresting place.

A Serious Case of Inertia

Our original intention was to moveon to another locale on KoPhangan, as we only booked intothe town of Thong Sala because ofour late arrival. However, I had achance to see the charms of theCharm Beach Resort in the light ofday, and the place looked OK.

The resort is a little rough aroundthe edges, with junk piled aroundthe periphery, although hidden

discretely from sight of the guestrooms and the lovely pool. Despitethe early hour, workmen werealready toiling, trying to put thedecimated lobby area backtogether. The beach faced onto AoBantai bay, providing a lovelyview of the resort-laden island ofKo Samui, slumbering silently just20 km. across the emerald waters.

The Charm Beach Resort consistsof perhaps two dozen rooms, withsome small bungalows on thebeach, and a series of duplexbungalows facing the pool, built ofbrick and raised about five feetabove the ground on concretestilts. I found that our poolsideroom was more than comfortable,and concluded that the place wasworth lingering in for the next fewdays, although my guidebookconcluded that staying in theconcrete frying pan of Thong Saladenoted either an early ferrydeparture, or a serious lack ofinertia. I knew that we wereplagued with both problems, andwas leaning toward staying put.

My assessment of the place wasfurther enhanced by myconversation with Gordon, the

manager. While Isipped my coffee,h eenthusiasticallyspent some timeoutlining hisplans forupgrading CharmBeach. Tosweeten the deal,Gordon offered tocut his nightlyrate to 800 Bahtand give us freeaccess to the

internet. This convinced me tostay, although I knew that Jeffmight think otherwise, as his firstimpressions of the place, (albeitgained in the darkness) weremarginal at best.

Jeff finally arose about 10:00 AM,and joined Gordon and I on thebeach. He was in an unusually foulmood, suffering from the effects ofyesterday’s arduous journey, thebottle of Sang Som rum, and asinus headache. He curtly toldGordon that we were moving onASAP to the island’s only truetourist Mecca, the famed Hat Rin,located about twenty minutes awayat the southern tip of the island. Igently told the crabby Crydermanto shut his yap, have a cup of

coffee, and listen to me while I toldhim of the advantages of stayingput.

Jeff soon came around to my wayof thinking, abetted by the coffeeand the obvious advantages of nothaving to pack, move, and searchfor other accommodation in HatRin. We decided that we wouldwhile away our time on the islanddoing next to nothing in the day,and then in the evening head to HatRin to sample its notoriousnightlife.

Dinner at Franck’s

Gordon provided great advice onour options for sightseeing, eating,and drinking, and by 3:00 PM wewere finally motivated to head outfor a drink and something to eat.Our first stop was at the bar at theCo Co Resort, a lovely little spotfive minutes down the beach thatmixes a terrific Bloody Mary.Then, it was off for dinner.

We have generally enjoyed goodfood here, but the fare at Franck’sFrench Restaurant was trulymemorable.

Gordon told us that Franck used towork in the kitchen of thePresident of France, which gave usa pretty good idea that the foodwould be more than decent. As weentered his establishment, hegreeted us warmly at the door (nosnooty French attitude here), andtold me that there was no need toput my shirt on. We selected ashaded table with a view of theaction on the street, but insteadFranck suggested a better location,and promptly hauled out a fan toprovide us with some extraventilation.

Our cold drinks arrived quickly,and we made our selections. Iordered a Caesar salad and a sirloinsteak, but Franck insteadrecommended a flank steak, as itwas much tastier. Normally, Iwouldn’t feed such a tough cut ofmeat to a dog, but who was I toargue with the chef?

Our meals arrived, accompaniedby five different kinds of saltimported from France. The salad,although considerably differentfrom the standard concoction I hadexpected, was superb, and themelt-in-your-mouth steak wasfurther enhanced by a fabulouspepper and mushroom sauce. My

delicious meal, complimented by agreat glass of wine, came in atabout $20 CDN, an incrediblebargain considering the quality ofthe food and the doting service. Ifyou’re ever in Ko Phangan, a visitto Franck’s is a must.

In the Shadow of Ko Samui

Twenty kilometers south of KoPhangan lies the playground of KoSamui island, one of Thailand’smost famous tourist hotspots. Overthe last 20 years, Samui hasexperienced tremendous growth,and is now dominated by dozens offive star resorts, red-hot nightlife,and hordes of wealthy farang(tourists). Our guidebooks grantedthat Samui is pretty nice, althoughhighly westernized.

Thus, we chose Ko Samui’s littlesister, the under-developed KoPhangan, which features the samebeautiful beaches and tropicalattractions (jungles, waterfalls,etc.) in the interior. Phangan is alsoaffordable for the backpack crowd,who are friendly and down toearth, as opposed to the haughtySamsonite set who are currentlybusy ruining Samui.

Ko Phangan has only twosettlements of any size. ThongSala, near where we are staying, isthe commercial lifeline of theisland, and the best source ofservices (internet, ATMs, doctors,etc.). Twenty minutes south lies thebackpacker party haven of HatRin, of which you will hear moreabout later.

The rest of the island’s west coastbeaches are dotted with small,reasonably priced resorts, and Iunderstand that most of which arepretty much indistinguishable fromeach other. Other than thespectacular, inaccessible HatKhuat (Bottle Beach), Gordonadvised us that there is really noneed to take any tours or day tripsunless we want to circumnavigatethe island on a boat. We made ajoint decision to just hang aroundhere, with a couple of trips to HatRin to spice things up.

Tristen Peter Neil Wise

Tristen Peter Neil Wise was takenunexpectedly at the age of 14 onJanuary 14, 2012. He ispredeceased by his greatgrandmother, Mae Pollock and hisuncle, Ron Pollock. He is survivedby his mother, Allyson Dunham,his step father, Ian Ford, his father,Jason Wise, his sister, MakenzyWise, grandparents Pete Dunhamand Linda Brant, Darlene and BobChawrun, Keith and Judy Wiseand Rhonda and Harvey Phillips.He is also survived by his unclesand aunts; Rob and NicoleDunham, Robin and ChristinaWise, Brent and Cortney Dunhamand Laura and Matt Brick as wellas numerous other aunts, unclesand cousins.

Although taken at a very youngage, Tristen had many passions inhis life. Born in Dryden, Tristen

moved to Alberta in 2004 where helearned the basics of downhillskiing. When moving back to

Dryden in 2010, Tristen couldbe found most winterweekends at the ski hill. Hespent as many hours on thehill in the winter as he did atthe skate park in the summer.He loved fishing with hisparents and family, loved hismany friends and held apassion for his music.

Tristen spent the last yearinvolved in the Dryden YouthCentre in leadership trainingand working on thedevelopment of a DrydenYouth Council to help createthe Dryden Children andYouth Strategic Plan. Tristen

was a member of the SAVECommittee at the Dryden HighSchool where he attended grade 9.

A Funeral Service was held FridayJanuary 20th at 1:00 p.m. in theRoyal Canadian Legion. AVisitation was held ThursdayJanuary 19th from 3:00 p.m. until8:00 p.m. in the Moffat Chapel ofStevens Funeral Homes.

That fancy cell phone is nothingmany ounces of dead weightwithin your pocket without anycharged battery. That iPod can’tutter a sound when its batterydrains the past drop. Even laptoppower cords think that restrictiveleashes, having us back comingfrom joining the cell mayhem.

But are we paying a highenvironmental price for all of thisbattery-operated convenience?

“Rechargeable batteries cancontain metals that may be harmfulto the environmental if notdisposed of properly,” said CarlSmith, CEO of Call2Recycle, arechargeable battery collectionprogram operated by theR e c h a r g e a b l eB a t t e r y ( h t t p : / / w w w. e p a y -battery.ca/symbol-21-65587-02-barcode-sc ...) RecyclingCorporation. “So, it’s better tokeep them out of landfills.”

Since Congress passed theMercury-Containing BatteryManagement Act in 1996, mostdisposable alkaline batteriescontain little or no mercury. As aresult, they’re considered nontoxicenough to toss out with thehousehold trash.

Rechargeable batteries are greeneron the production end since theylast for hundreds of cycles overmany years. However, the toxicmetals required to make them –cadmium, cobalt, lead – aren’t kindto the Earth.

When rechargeable batteriesdegrade in landfills, heavy metalscan taint the surrounding air,topsoil and groundwater,eventually getting inside ourbodies.

For that reason, Call2Recycle andsimilar programs are working totrain consumers to recycle theircell phone, laptop, digital cameraand other rechargeable batteries.Those heavy metals can actuallybe reused to make more batteries,reducing the need to mine for newresources.

“We recycle every bit of thebatteries we collect, regardless of

chemistry, and use theirbyproducts to make new products,including batteries and stainlesssteel items,” Smith said.

In fact, since its environmentalfootprint has become a majorconcern within the batteryindustry, researchers have begunsearching for alternative materialsto fuel the electrochemical cells.

“We take into accountenvironmental impact becausethere is, to a significant degree, abattery recycling industry outthere, [and] there are nowconferences that deal with nothingbut environmental impact andrecycling of used batteries,” saidElton Cairns, a rechargeablebattery and fuel cell expert at theUniversity of California, Berkeley.

“So that’s very much an industrialconcern and a concern for manyresearchers in choosing theelectrode materials and theelectrolytes that they study anddevelop.”

For example, phosphate materialsare starting to show up in morelithium-ion batteries that powerdevices including laptops and cellphones. The phosphate serves as asubstitute for heavy metal nickeland cobalt elements.

But substituting toxic batterycomponents for gentler ones isn’talways an equal energy trade-off,which is a major reason whycreating “green batteries” is atough proposition.

“Phosphate-based materials,though safer and moreenvironmentally benign, are atsomewhat of a disadvantagecompared to the oxide-basedmaterials in terms of specificenergy,” Cairns told DiscoveryNews.

Without an eco-friendlieralternative to batteries, recyclingrechargeables is the best wayconsumers can prevent thoseheavy metals from leeching intothe environment and help green thebattery production cycle.

Chinese New Year is a holiday thatcelebrates the beginning of a newyear according to the lunar calendar.It is considered to be one of the mostimportant holidays for Chinesefamilies.

The holiday is celebrated with bigfamily gatherings, gift giving, theeating of symbolic foods and displayof festive decorations--all focusedon bringing good luck for the newyear and celebrating the coming ofSpring. It is celebrated as a festivalfor nearly two weeks, after whichbegins the Chinese Lantern Festival.It is usually observed during midJanuary to mid February accordingto the lunar calendar. In 2012,Chinese New Year will be observedfrom January 22 (New Year's Eve)to February 6. This festival is alsoknown as the Spring Festival.

Cleaning the house and decoratingit: On Chinese New Year's Eve,people clean their homes with thebelief that it will help them get rid of

bad luck and get the house ready toaccept good luck in the year ahead.The Chinese decorate their doorsand windows with signs and postershaving the word "fu" engraved onthem, which means good luck and

happiness. Flowers are also usedto adorn the homes, as theyindicate the coming ofspring.Creating lanterns: TheChinese indulge in paper lanterncrafts not just to adorn theirhouses during the New YearFestival but also to enjoy theLantern Festival that follows theNew Year celebrations. Familiesnot only light lanterns but alsohang them on walls or poles to

be used in lantern parades.

Honor the animal associated withthe New Year: 2012 is the year of thedragon according to Chinese zodiac.So, while the Chinese adorn theirhouses during this time, they aresure to use dragon figures in theirdecorations.

Giving good luck presents: One ofthe popular Chinese New Yeartraditions is to present your dearones gifts that are symbols of goodluck and prosperity. Most adults giftred envelopes filled with money totheir younger family members,relatives, and friends. The recipientsbow three times to show theirrespect when accepting the gifts. Itis a custom not to open theenvelopes until the recipient leavesthe house of the person who has

offered thepresent. Theadults also offergifts packed in redcovers tounmarried familymembers.Family gatheringsand feasting: TheChinese visit theirrelatives' houses and have a grandfeast with eight to nine dishes, asthese are considered to be luckynumbers. Some dishes eatennormally during this festival areChinese dumplings, long noodles,and oranges. The noodles symbolizelong life and oranges are a sign ofcompleteness. Sticky rice cakes andsweets are also eaten during thistime.

A bowl of sticky rice is offered tothe Kitchen God as a thank youdinner. Glutinous rice balls servedwith brown sugar and sugar soup arealso offered to the god to please him.The Kitchen God is assigned by theemperor of heaven, Yu Huang, tomonitor every family all through theyear.

To show their respect, the Chinesedecorate their kitchen with newpaper pictures of the Kitchen Godevery year. Once the thank youdinner is over, the picture of the Godis burned so as to send him back toheaven.

New clothes: Wearing new clothes is

one of the Chinese New Yeartraditions. The Chinese try to wearred clothes, as they believe the colorhelps in getting rid of evil spirits.But they do avoid wearing blackclothes as they consider "black" asthe sign of death. They also cut theirhair so as to make a fresh start to theyear ahead.

Special prayers: The Chinese NewYear has a special significance forthe business houses. They offer aspecial prayer on the 2nd day of thefestival, especially if they plan tostart a venture at this time of theyear. They believe that by doing so,they will be blessed with good fortune and prosperity.

A special highlight of Chinese NewYear celebrations is the preparationof the Tray of Togetherness which isoctagonal or circular in shape. Thistray comes with an assortment offoods like sugared fruits, coconut,winter melon, water chestnut, andlotus seeds. In addition, it may havecarrots and tangerines. The purposeis to wish for a sweet beginning inthe year ahead.

God but I hate perky.... that attitudeand happy demeanour that exudesenthusiasm, energy and joy nomatter how grave the situation.Psychologists explain that if webehave in a positive manner, thosearound us will return the behaviourin kind. Smiles foster smiles...concern begets concern... perky,unfortunately, ferments perky. Inmyself the endurance of perkyencourages murderous rage.

For individuals that choose toindulge in this orgy of enthusiasmand energy there seem to be someglitches in their programming.Judgement seems to temporarilysuspended when 'perky' infestationsoccur. This is most evident to mewhen I buy my morning cup ofcoffee. The prospect of dealing witha chattering, clear eyed, smiling,helpful, energetic, inquisitivecashier is depressing. It is only withthe help of a competent therapist thatI have learned to suppress myimpulse to kill on those occasions. Ifnormal judgement were present the

clerk would acknowledge the perilthey were in and leave every micronof 'perk' hidden away until I left.

Even on days when theantidepressants have been effective,'perkiness' arouses negative feelingswithin me. When perfect strangerssmile and interact with thisunnatural degree of enthusiasm Ibecome suspicious immediately. Mymind jumps to the question of 'whatdo they want?..what are they after?'.To much of this in a short period oftime will sometimes trigger myparanoia and it may be weeks beforeI can convince myself that no one is'out to get me'. In this sense 'perky' isa real threat to my mental andemotional health.

These harpies of happiness often setup situations that ,are at crosspurposes with their intentions.Imagine the response of mournerswhen one of these happy harbingersfinds something positive at thefuneral of a loved one. Commentssuch as 'What a wonderful day for a

funeral' often increase the chancesof a second funeral happening thesame day. Smiling, bouncing,squeaky energy can destroy theoriginal purpose of a meditationclass.

On rare occasions a positive resultdoes arise however. I can remembermy critically ill grandfather risingfrom what we thought was going tobe his deathbed in an effort to chokethe life out of one of my particularlyperky cousins.

Perfunctory perkiness is most oftenobserved in a work setting. Bossessometimes engage in such behaviourin order to have employees meettheir unreasonable demands. It isdifficult enough to refuse a workdemand of a regular boss butrefusing one with an excess ofenthusiasm and energy about aproject is almost impossible.Workers as well use the behaviour.How could any employer haranguean employee for messing up whenthey entered the task with all that

energy and enthusiasm?

To me it has become clear that'perky' has more drawbacks that it isworth. None the less the number ofindividuals succumbing to itsseductive, escapist power seem to beincreasing. It has been suggestedthat this behaviour should belegislated out of existence. Thosewho are repeat offenders might besubjected to continuouselectroshock therapy until theybecome as depressed as the 'normal'population. Failing to findgovernment support to rid ourselvesof this emotional blight it may benecessary to establish some supportgroups to help these perks recogniseand overcome their character defect.It might be the birth of a new groupsuch as Perkaholics Anonymous.

Whatever the final solution to thisproblem might be, it is essential thatmisguided behaviour be redirected.Failing some type of decisive actionthere is a real possibility thatviolence may erupt

The warm weather has promptedyou to get outside and get rid ofthat old washer, dryer and barbedwire fence in your back yard andsheds. You load it up and wonderwhere to take it. You thenremember that Rocky MountainIndustries in the West SundreIndustrial Park takes scrap metal.You attend Rocky MountainIndustries but don’t see anyonearound, so you leave your items onthe road outside the fence anddrive away.

For years residents of MountainView County and surroundingareas have been leaving items onthe roadway outside of theproperty owned by RockyMountain Industries. Whateveryone does not realize is thatthe roadway outside of RockyMountain Industries belongs toMountain View County and not toRocky Mountain Industries. Byleaving items on the roadway, youare in fact placing them on County

property, Not only is this practicehazardous to those who use theroadway but is also illegal andcould cost you a minimum $115fine under the EnvironmentalProtection and Enhancement Act.

Effective January 1, 2012, anyonecaught dumping items on the roadallowance will be fined aminimum $115 and could be heldresponsible for the cost of theclean-up. Warning signs andsurveillance are now in place.

and recheck the heart in anotherminute or two to make sure it stops. You need to be aware that your pet’seyes will remain open after death.You will not be able to close them,since the open position is the“relaxed position” of the eyelid muscles. At this time, your vet willlet you know that your pet is gone,and will likely give you some timealone with your pet to say yourgoodbyes.

What can go wrong?

What are some potentialcomplications with euthanasia? Itseems simple, but there are thingsthat can go wrong that we cannotforesee or prevent. Sometimes thecirculatory system of your animal isin collapse, and we cannot find avein to get the IV in. We then mayhave to try various sites before weget a good vein. If your pet isanxious, they may try to bite us orstruggle to get away. Sometimes amuzzle and/or additional restraint(by a veterinary assistant) arenecessary. With cats, sometimes theheart is just not where it is ‘supposedto be’. It is actually a fairly smallorgan in a cat, and it can be missed.The vet may need to take a bit oftime to find it, or they may evenhave to inject the solution into theliver, which will still do the job, butit takes a bit longer. Sometimes if ananimal is sedated, it can start tovomit. This is not a pleasant thingfor your pet to go through prior to itsdeath, but it can’t always bepredicted. Some pets will take somebreaths or gasps after they aredeceased. These are called “agonalbreaths”, and they are a reflex of thelungs, which are programmed tokeep working to get air into thebody. These gasps are not pretty, butthey are not preventable in everycase either. After death, all themuscles relax, including the bladderand bowels. This means that it is

very common for animals to releasetheir urine and feces after death, andit is something you should expect(especially if you are having a homeeuthanasia done and/or plan totransport the body of your pet aftereuthanasia – have some old towels atthe ready in these cases).

In the case of an animal being

found dead, what do you do?

This is a very sad situation, and youmay find yourself in a bit of shock.This is especially true if the pet wasnot old or sick. Take some time tobreathe and accept what hashappened. Keep in mind that if youwant to know what your pet diedfrom, you can call your veterinarianand a post-mortem (autopsy) can beperformed. If you want a postmortem done, the sooner you get thebody to the veterinarian the better, assamples must be collected as freshlyas possible for the best chance atmaking a diagnosis. The postmortem can be performed, samplescan be collected, the body can beclosed up, and your pet can becremated or returned to you forburial if you so choose. There arecosts involved with doing a postmortem, so be sure to ask about that.If you do not want/need a postmortem done, you must still dealwith the fact that you have a deadbody to dispose of.

Disposal Options for the Body

You can bury your deceased pet onyour own private propertydepending on what your localmunicipal bylaws allow (if you livein a village, town or city). Keep inmind that most municipalities doNOT allow this. I usually don’trecommend home burial unless youlive on a farm– it is impractical(even impossible once the ground isfrozen), and there are legal andsafety issues (“call before you dig”)

to take into consideration. Thegrave should be 4-6 feet deep, andaway from any water sources.

You can have the body cremated.Your veterinary clinic will arrangethis for you. The most economicaloption for cremation is called a“general cremation”. This is wherea licensed cremation facility takesthe bodies of a number of deceasedanimals and cremates them together.You do not get your pets ashes backwith a general cremation.

Another option is to have a “privatecremation” done. This is where thecrematorium is cleaned out, youranimal is cremated, and the ashesare collected and returned to you inan urn of your choosing. Once youget the ashes back, they can bescattered, buried or stored whereveryou wish. This option is moreexpensive for obvious reasons, butmany people pick this option sothey can ensure their pet is alwayswith them, or is put to rest in ameaningful place.

Emotional Support

The loss of a pet can be devastating,and can even cause seriousdepression in some people. If youknow someone that has recently losta pet, respect the bond they shared,and offer your sympathy andcondolences. It does not help to say“it was just a dog”, or “it wasn’t likea person died”. People can feel theloss of a beloved pet very deeply,and being insensitive to this canmake them feel very alone in theirgrief. Send a card or tell them abouta fond memory you have of theirpet. Do NOT get them areplacement pet. They need tomourn the loss of their companion,and need to go through that processbefore they can accept another

animal into their life.
