Keith for the Christmas card greetings and gifts received from so many!

Monday, January 9 The Baptism of Jesus by John is a pivotal event in which the Spirit not only descends from the heavens but propels Jesus into his public ministry. Out Bap-tism does the same. We are anointed by the Spirit to serve others, to live our lives publicly as sons and daughters of the living God. May we reflect the pow-er of the spirit as did Jesus by “going about doing good”. Take a moment this week to look at the Icon of the Bap-tism of the Lord hanging in the baptistery of our Church. It is an antique Byzantine Icon of the Baptism of the Lord, from Russia. Let us pray to remain faithful to our call to discipleship and our own baptismal promis-es as we walk the journey of life, imitating Christ in all that we say and do along the way.

Gratitude List As we find ourselves wrapping up one year and beginning another, it seems appropriate to reflect on blessings and to give thanks. So we offer thanks: -- For all of you who bless us with the gift of your presence, Sunday after Sunday, and even during the week; -- To all our ministers who go the extra mile by showing up when scheduled, and arranging their holiday plans to serve at our Holyday Masses; -- To the Decorating Elves who beautify our church and edify us with their handiwork; -- To our vocalists and accompanists, who help us make such pretty music, week after week and especially at Christ-mas; -- To all who are so generous, to our weekly collection, to our building fund, to the special collections that keep pop-ping up, and to special needs like our Heifer project. Marriage Enrichment “Living Christ in Your Marriage”: Join Jim Schellman for a day of formation for married couples to deepen their mar-riage covenant in Jesus Christ. The full day of workshop will be held at the Imaculata Center; Saturday, February 4, 2017 from 9:00am-4:30pm. The cost of the retreat is $75 which will include your lunch and all supplies. Pre-registration is required. Deadline to register is January 20, 2017. Go to www.diolaf.org/marriage-enrichment or call 261-5653 to register. From the Pastor’s Desk

We find ourselves already at the conclusion of our Christmas season, with the Feast of the Epiphany this weekend, and the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord on Monday, Jan. 9. So we hark back to Christmas Eve, and the words of Pope Francis in his homily in St. Peter’s Basilica at Christmas Mass:

“It is a night of glory, that glory proclaimed by the angels in Bethlehem and also by us today all over the world. It is a night of joy, because from this day forth, and for all times, the infinite and eternal God is God with us: he is not far off, we need not search for him in the heavens or in mystical notions; he is close, he has been made man and will never distance himself from our humanity, which he has made his own. It is a night of light: that light, prophesied by Isaiah (cf. 9:1), which would illumine those who walk in darkness, has appeared and enveloped the shepherds of Bethlehem (cf. Lk 2:9). . . .

“With this sign the Gospel reveals a paradox: it speaks of the emperor, the governor, the mighty of those times, but God does not make himself present there; he does not appear in the grand hall of a royal palace, but in the poverty of a stable; not in pomp and show, but in the simplicity of life; not in power, but in a smallness which surpris-es. In order to discover him, we need to go there, where he is: we need to bow down, humble ourselves, make our-selves small. The Child who is born challenges us: he calls us to leave behind fleeting illusions and go to the essence, to renounce our insatiable claims, to abandon our endless dissatisfaction and sadness for something we will never have. It will help us to leave these things behind in order to rediscover in the simplicity of the God-child, peace, joy and the meaning of life. . . .

“Let us allow ourselves also to be challenged and convened tonight by Jesus. Let us go to him with trust, from that area in us we feel to be marginalized, from our own limitations. Let us touch the tenderness which saves. Let us draw close to God who draws close to us, let us pause to look upon the crib, and imagine the birth of Jesus: light, peace, utmost poverty, and rejection. Let us enter into the real Nativity with the shepherds, taking to Jesus all that we are, our alienation, our unhealed wounds. Then, in Jesus we will enjoy the flavour of the true spirit of Christmas: the beauty of being loved by God. With Mary and Joseph we pause before the manger, before Jesus who is born as bread for my life.

“Contemplating his humble and infinite love, let us say to him: thank you, thank you because you have done all this for me.”
