Truths of Catholic Faith: It would be bad enough if Herod had a good intention and
felt he had to lie in order to achieve it. In this case both is goal (harming a Child) and
his method (lying) are wrong. No matter what the goal, lying is simply always wrong.
Lying consists in saying what is false with the intention of deceiving one’s neighbor: (CCC 2508). Mary witnessed the magi prostrating themselves and doing Jesus homage.
Not only was she the mother of a beautiful baby boy, she is indeed the Mother of God.
Knowing Mary, she would never make a fuss about the latter. But seeing what they did,
Mary must have sensed the awesome gift that God had bestowed upon her-and us.
Mary is truly “Mother of God” since she is the mother of the eternal Son of God made man, who is God himself. (CCC 509) Our Gospel reading today is read each of the
three years in our liturgical cycle on this feast of the Epiphany. Each Sunday at each
Mass, whether we’re hearing the Gospel the only time in the three year cycle or whether
it’s being repeated, we always recite the Our Father together during the Liturgy of the
Eucharist. The Lord’s Prayer and the Good news are intimately related. The Lord’s Prayer is the quintessential prayer of the Church. It is an integral part of the major hours of the Divine Office and of the sacraments of Christian initiation: Baptism,
Confirmation, and Eucharist. Integrated into the Eucharist it reveals the eschatological character of its petitions, hoping for the Lord, “until he comes” (1 Cor. 11:26). (CCC
2776)
Am I willing to prostrate myself and do Jesus homage?
For a Child: Why do we call Mary the Mother of God?
My role in the Community: A community depends in large part on truthfulness. Have
I accepted the illusion that there is such a thing as a little white lie: Do I conscientiously
avoid saying what is false with the intention of deceiving my neighbor?
We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage – Matthew 2:2.
The Gospel Truth. Kenneth Ogorek.
