A Daily Prayer to St Joseph… and a Challenge
Pope Francis has proclaimed that 2021 is the Year of Saint Joseph. At the conclusion of his Proclamation Letter, he added this prayer, which he encourages all of us to pray together:
Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary. To you God entrusted his only Son; in you Mary placed her trust; with you Christ became man.
Blessed Joseph, to us too, show yourself a father and guide us in the path of life. Obtain for us grace, mercy, and courage, and defend us from every evil. Amen.

Today, we hear about a manifestation of Jesus’
power. He has formed the nuclei of the New Israel
and begins to utilize his Divine power to give
witness to His authority. As human beings, both
past and present, people are often weary and
dubious of any person who claims special status.
We tend to demand proof before accepting any
claim that one is above another. This was especially
true in the ancient world. So, it is not surprising,
that as Jesus began his ministry,
he would perform a physical
miracle that would accompany a
spiritual change. In fact, all of his
deeds would bring about a
spiritual conversion or realization
assuring all that he is from God.
In our first reading from the Book
of Deuteronomy, Moses, who is a
paradigmatic prophet, reveals the
characteristics of future prophets.
God tells Moses that future
prophets will be like him. They will
be kin and will speak God’s words.
Since the prophet’s authority
comes from God alone, their
message must be observed. Failure to comply will
result in them being answerable to God. God
continues to explain that if a prophet creates his
own prophecy, and it is not from God, God will
silence that prophet by death; therefore, the
people will be assured it is God’s message they
hear.
In Paul’s first Letter to the Corinthians, Christians
are becoming anxious for the return of Christ and
the fulfillment of His prophecy. The Apostle to the
Gentiles urges the converts not to be anxious about
the prophecy concerning Christ’s second Coming.
Paul enjoins the Corinthians to focus on God and
the Gospel, the Good News. This disciple of Christ
explains that this world is passing and the Kingdom
of God is beginning. Christians must not doubt due
to this transitional stage. Thus, the distractions of
the Roman world that include power, pride, wealth
and status need to be subdued in order that the
Kingdom of God can flourish. The transition from
this world into the next demands patience and
faith. God’s ways are not like man’s ways. The
timing is relative in the Heavenly realm.
The relationship between Jesus and the Kingdom is
emphasized in today’s Gospel by Mark. Jesus is
teaching in Capernaum’s synagogue and he
“astonishes” the people as he encounters an
unclean spirit. Jesus preaches
with authority and his knowledge
astounds the scribes who are
present. Then, Christ reveals his
extraordinary power when he
authoritatively orders the demon
out of the possessed man. When,
the demon threatens to reveal
who Jesus really is, the Lord
silences him, stunning all who are
around. This is the first of four
exorcisms in Mark’s account,
demonstrating that Jesus is not an
ordinary prophet. He is Divine and
speaks with authority.
The Liturgy of the Word, today,
calls upon us to refocus our attention on the
Kingdom of God. Like the early Christians, we are
still awaiting the return of the Lord as we hear and
heed the Gospel. Christ has left us tools, the
sacraments, to use as we prepare ourselves for our
journey with him to Calvary. Once again, we will
witness God’s love for us as we walk with the
Bridegroom, Christ. It is essential that we approach
the seasons of Ordinary Time and Lent with love
and contrition in order to fully experience the joys
and grace of the Paschal Feast. We must take the
time to instruct and discipline ourselves so that the
“noise” of world does not hinder our metanoia. As
Christ reveals His Divinity and His humanity through
the Word, we must allow our transformation into
God’s children to complete to its fruition.
